Mackay aiming for another golden performance in Aspen It’s time to hit the slopes for another highly anticipated, extreme action packed winter X Games, returning to Buttermilk in Aspen, Colorado Jan. 26-28, with all the action broadcast live on ESPN. Events can also be streamed live on XGames.com, YouTube (youtube.com/@XGames) and Twitch (twitch.tv/xgames), with coverage also airing on ABC. As fans eagerly await the 2024 Aspen X Games to kick off, one notable name has been making their way up the ranks — rising star Brendan Mackay. The Canadian freestyle skier has been making headlines in 2023 with his incredible performances in half-pipe skiing, and making a name for himself on the international stage along the way. Since his Olympic debut in 2022, Mackay’s confidence carried over into 2023 with his best performance coming during the World Freestyle Skiing Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia. He put up a score of 97.25, putting down his first 1620 in competition and earning himself a gold medal, proving he has what it takes to compete against anyone. One top of his stellar performance at the World Freestyle Skiing Championships, Mackay continued his dominance securing gold at the FIS Freestyle, Snowboard and Freeski Championships with his gravy-defying moves, elevating him to the top of the sport. With the 2024 X Games right around the corner, Mackay will have another opportunity to further solidify his place in the sport as one of the best ever. His consistent performances, work ethic and sheer determination has him well positioned to make his mark early in the competition as the Calgary native will surely look to walk away with more hardware.

Keeping up with the Smiths: Glover, Erskine front new series ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ There’s no need to relive the same old entertainment this Groundhog Day, because Prime has a brand new offering (without any time loops involved). “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” an action comedy series based on the plot of the original 1941 film, brings a new twist to the classic tale of espionage and high-stakes hijinks. All eight episodes of the series’ debut season release Friday, Feb. 2, on Prime Video. While the titular, married Smiths are likely to conjure the image of former real-life couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, both of whom starred in the 2005 film of the same name, the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” concept is, in fact, a much older production, one directed by famed filmmaker and so-called “Master of Suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock. The director — then not yet known for his 1960 masterpiece “Psycho” nor his other many memorable films, which include “The Birds” (1963), “Rear Window” (1954) and “Vertigo” (1958) — became very well known for his gripping thriller style, but he also had a penchant for comedy, as was evident in several of his films, such as 1938’s “The Lady Vanishes” and, yes, the 1941 spy comedy “Mr. & Mr. Smith,” led by Carole Lombard (“My Man Godfrey,” 1936) and Robert Montgomery (“Lady in the Lake,” 1946). Since Hitchcock’s premiere of the now-classic tale, several other takes on the cat-and-mouse spy game have been born. This newest series iteration of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” stars the multi-talented rapper, writer, actor and producer Donald Glover (“At-

lanta”) as a suave new spy who must assume the identity of “John Smith,” a standard, unassuming, run-of-the-mill husband to his wife, “Jane,” also a new hire by the same spy agency, played by three-time Emmy nominee Maya Erskine (“PEN15”). First announced in February 2021, the eight-episode series was originally designed to include “Fleabag’s” Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the titular missus. But, due to some conflicts on the creative side, Waller-Bridge stepped away from the series, and Prime’s new series was born with Erskine as co-pilot. Glover, meanwhile, who signed an exclusive deal with Amazon in 2021, takes his usual stance with respect to the series and has become involved both on camera and behind it. In addition to starring as the mysterious John Smith, Glover also co-created the series with “Atlanta” and “Fargo” writer Francesca Sloane. Alongside Glover and Erskine, Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,” 2006), John Turturro (“Barton Fink,” 1991) and Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”) are listed among the show’s big names as well. Dontae Hawkins (“Wu-Tang: An American Saga”), Alex Huynh (“The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” 2022) and Tamara Torres (“Orange Is the New Black”) are also credited among the cast, while Ron Perlman (“Hellboy,” 2004), Alexander Skarsgard (“Succession”), Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Úrsula Corberó (“Money Heist”), Eiza González (“Baby Driver,” 2017) and Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Coven”) are all credited as guest stars or cameos. The series is described by “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (2005) writer Simon Kinberg as “’Married... with Children’ with guns,” but the official Prime Video synopsis provides a much clearer picture of what writers have planned for the series, including budding romance, prime real estate and plenty of situational comedy.

Scott Patterson OF SULLIVAN’S CROSSING ON CW/CTV Q: Did Scott Patterson do any other series between “Gilmore Girls” and “Sullivan’s Crossing”?

A: Yes. He was a star of “Aliens in America,” a 2007-08 CW sitcom about a foreign student trying to assimilate into a Wisconsin community. Patterson played the patriarch of the youth’s host family, and he also had a recurring part spanning several episodes in The CW’s 2008-13 “90210” update. And technically, though, one could consider the Netflix-originated 2016 “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” sequel — in which the actor reprised his role as Luke — a series, since it consisted of four episodes. Patterson also was in NBC’s 2010-11 drama series “The Event,” about aliens who came to Earth as World War II was ending. He had a 2011 guest shot on CBS’ “CSI: Miami,” and he made several cable movies including the Lifetime projects “Love at the Christmas Table” (2012) and “Kidnapped: The Hannah Anderson Story” (2015). Based on novels by Robyn Carr, “Sullivan’s Crossing” ended its first season on The CW in December, and much earlier than that (last May) on its originating Canadian network CTV … but it will be back for Season 2 on both outlets (with the dates for that to be specified once production of the episodes is completed in Nova Scotia). The renewal is a good thing, because the show’s first-year cliffhanger made it seem that central character Maggie Sullivan (played by Morgan Kohan) was leaving her father (Patterson) and the title campground behind to return to Boston for good.

Q: Ryan Reynolds did such a great job with the singing and dancing in “Spirited.” Has he ever been on stage? Will he be in any more musicals coming up?

While doing press to promote the film in late 2022, he spent a lot of time talking down his musical skills.

A: Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool,” 2016) had next to no experience with musical numbers prior to “Spirited,” the 2022 musical version of the classic story of Ebeneezer Scrooge. And though he’d probably be pleased to hear you thought he did well, he seems less convinced and is unlikely to become a song-and-dance man any time soon.

All of his previous musical performances, he said, were done for laughs — see, for example, his rendition of Wham’s “Careless Whisper” over the credits of his 2016 action-comedy “Deadpool” or shrilly singing the R&B classic “It Takes Two” in his 2009 romcom “The Proposal.”

Carl Tart OF GRAND CREW ON NBC Q: What can you tell me about the guy who played Sherm on “Grand Crew”? What’s he doing now? (Sadly, I know it’s been canceled.)

A: I’m glad I’m not the one to break the news to you. Two-season NBC sitcom “Grand Crew” did indeed air its last episode in April 2023 — sad news for fans, but it left its cast members free to pursue new projects. That includes improv comedian Carl Tart, who played Sherm Jones. It was the biggest on-screen role for Tart, whose resume has tended more toward writing (as a writer on “Mad TV” in the mid-2010s, for example). feet since “Grand Crew” ended.

But he’s definitely landed on his

“In the Know” is an animated comedy about “public radio’s third most popular interview program.” It is co-written by and co-starring animation legend Mike Judge, the guy who gave us “Beavis and Butt-Head” and “King of the Hill.” Tart’s role is a sound engineer named Carl (which is at least convenient for line reading). Even as he was booking all this exciting new work, Tart got wistful about the cancelation of “Grand Crew.”

As citizens migrate from city centers to suburbia and from suburbia to rural life, love has taken root, driving down the dusty backroads of the American countryside in search of the perfect match. Hosted by superstar entertainer and Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles (“Harriet,” 2019), this series follows four farmers as they harvest a little happiness and search for a ranch-ready partner. Based on a British format developed by the minds behind “American Idol,” Fremantle, and on a U.S.-based adaptation of the series that previously aired on The CW, in 2008, “Farmer Wants a Wife” joins these country-loving singles as they are presented with women from the big city — one of whom they will ideally choose to be their future spouse. With a fresh crop of singles to boot, this season’s “country boys” range in age from 23 to 42, hailing from four different states: Mitchell Kolinsky, 27, a first-generation farmer who purchased land to pursue his dreams in Mount Juliet, Tennessee; Brandon Rogers, 29, a second-generation potato and barley farmer, and the most remote single this season, living in Center, Colorado; Ty Ferrell, 42, a single father and cattle roper from Sikeston, Missouri; and Nathan Smothers, 23, the season’s youngest bachelor, a fourth-generation citrus and cattle farmer living in Bartow, Florida.

Like with the series’ first season, the men will each take five women back home to their rural abodes, where the ladies will get a rundown on the realities of farm life alongside a crash course in country romance, with each woman given the opportunity to see if a farmer’s life is truly right for them. Last season saw ups and downs for the farmers, with some finding love and others leaving just as single as they showed up. Hunter (31) and Meghan (23), for one, found their happily ever after, with the couple generating sparks from Day 1, resulting in a long-lasting relationship.
