Inter Miami and Messi host state rival Orlando City

The 2024 Major League Soccer season continues, as fan-favorite player Lionel Messi and Inter Miami get set for match No. 3 against Orlando City FC on Saturday, March 2, at DRV PNK Stadium in Miami, airing live on Fox and Apple TV+. And don’t miss the rest of the weekend’s MLS action, as Toronto FC takes on New England at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Sunday, March 3, also airing live on Apple TV+.

It’s only Messi’s second season with Inter Miami, and expectations are high; after the 36-year-old Argentinian native signed on with Miami mid-season last year, the club brought home its first League Cup title. With the addition of Messi’s former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets, coach Gerardo Martino has a solid lineup at his disposal to build off the team’s tremendous end to the 2023 campaign. However, Martino is keeping things in perspective, regardless of the hype.

“I know we have an excellent team that will compete well, but we have to be aware of what this generates in our rivals,” Martino said, speaking to USA Today. “When the Wizards play Milwaukee, they play even better because they are playing against a team that has a lot of big names. We have to prepare for that. We have to move away from talking about the names and the past and focus on what we can achieve now.”

As Inter Miami looks to keep its streak going through 2024, Toronto FC is looking to significantly improve on all fronts after concluding the 2023 campaign with a 4-10-20 record and a league-worst 59 goals against.

Heading into its second regular-season match against an elite squad in New England, coach John Herdman looks to lean on the leadership of players like Jonathan Osorio and Lorenzo Insigne as Toronto aims to put the past behind it.

“The leadership group are key to that,” Herdman said. “Whether it was my time with the women’s team, my time with the men’s team, the strength of that leadership will determine how far we’re able to pioneer as a group.”

A ‘Good’ return: Carrie Preston is back as lawyer ‘Elsbeth’

Two shows on which she was featured are over now, but you can’t keep Elsbeth Tascioni down.

The quirky, high-spirited lawyer portrayed by Carrie Preston — who won a Primetime Emmy for the role as a guest star in “The Good Wife,” then reprised it in the spinoff “The Good Fight” — now has a show of her own as the character. Premiering Thursday, Feb. 29, on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime, “Elsbeth” transfers Tascioni from Chicago to New York, where she has a secret agenda as she works with the city’s police department in a special investigative job. Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”) plays the stern police chief, Capt. C.W. Wagner, while Carra Patterson (“Straight Outta Compton,” 2015) is Kaya Blanke, the officer partnered with Elsbeth.

“I could not be more thrilled,” the friendly Preston says of giving Elsbeth her own showcase now. “It’s been such a wonderful and interesting journey with this character. I started to play her 14 years ago, at the end of the first season of ‘The Good Wife,’ and you do these guest spots and don’t ever think they’re going to repeat. You hope you do it well and then you move on to your next job, but I knew there was something special about that character even back then.

“I felt so lucky and privileged that they would entrust me with it, because she was so unique,” Preston continues. “She seemed to resonate with audiences, and then a [TV] season went by and I was like, ‘Well, OK.

I guess that’s that.’ Then they brought me back for more, and the audiences again seemed to respond to her and her unconventional way of doing things. And as the seasons [of ‘The Good Wife’] went by, I would hear, ‘Why don’t you do a spinoff that centres around her?’ [Executive producers] Robert and Michelle King and I would touch base about that, but it wasn’t the right time.”

Instead, “The Good Fight” happened as the first spinoff, with Christine Baranski’s (“Mamma Mia!,” 2008) Diane Lockhart character front and center. “They would bring me back periodically [on that drama],” Preston notes, “and I even got to direct on that. Then at the end of ‘The Good Fight,’ we started talking a little more in earnest [about what has become ‘Elsbeth’], and COVID-19 happened.”

After the resulting delay, the Kings remain among the executive producers of “Elsbeth,” which starts each story by showing the perpetrator committing the given week’s crime. Elsbeth then matches wits with the felon — in the series premiere, a homicidal stage director played by guest star Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”) — with her homespun manner cloaking her keen method of interrogation. If that sounds like the approach of a certain other television series and character, that’s not a coincidence.

Preston says that at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Kings “found that they were going back and watching reruns of ‘Columbo,’ and they just kept getting drawn to the structure of that show. Coincidentally, out of nowhere, a reporter wrote a piece about how she also was watching ‘Columbo’ … and at the end of it, she wrote, ‘We don’t need a reboot of “Columbo.” Just give Elsbeth Tascioni her own show.’ [The Kings] already had the idea of Elsbeth doing something like that, then they called me and said, ‘Let’s come up with a pitch.’”

Q: Jeremy Allen White has been on quite an awards track lately for “The Bear.” What are some of the other things he has done?

A: Indeed, the actor has been reaping some big rewards for his starring role in the FX-produced Hulu series about life and work at a Chicago sandwich shop. Last month alone, White earned a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award (his second) and a Critics’ Choice Award (his second) for his work in the show — among the many other honors it has received, including being named Best (or Outstanding) Comedy Series at all three of those ceremonies in January.

Brooklyn, N.Y., native White has been acting professionally since 2006, when he appeared in the movie “Beautiful Ohio” and the short-lived NBC series “Conviction.” He also did guest roles in “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” but his best-known part before “The Bear” likely was that of Phillip “Lip” Gallagher in Showtime’s “Shameless,” maintaining that role throughout the show’s 11-season run. Additionally, he appeared opposite Julia Roberts in the Prime Video series “Homecoming.”

White also has stayed quite active in movies, earning good reviews most recently for the wrestling drama “The Iron Claw.” Among his other films are “Fingernails,” “Fremont,” “The Birthday Cake,” “The Rental,” “After Everything,” “Rob the Mob,” “Bad Turn Worse,” “Movie 43,” “The Time Being,” “Twelve,” “After School” and “The Speed of Life.” Also, White is becoming known as a spokesperson for a popular brand of men’s underwear, a job he began just this year.

Q: I thought the guy who played Leo Usher in “The Fall of the House of Usher” series was excellent. What’s he doing now?

A: Great news: he’s moved on to something pretty similar, albeit a bit lighter.

Rahul Kohli just appeared in another twisty thriller built around the intrigues of a rich family: Hulu’s “Death and Other Details.”

This one has a lighter tone — more cozy mystery, less gothic horror. Kohli plays Sunil, the owner of

the luxury cruise ship the show is set on (again, in contrast with the crumbling mansions and claustrophobic condo apartments of 2023’s “Usher”).

The tonal shift must have been a joy for Kohli, who’s become a member of neo-noir master Mike Flanagan’s acting troupe.

Flanagan created “The Fall of the House of Usher” as part of a long-term deal with Netflix that also gave us a couple of other dark-and-bloody miniseries, including “Midnight Mass” in 2021 and

“The Haunting of Bly Manor” in 2020.

Kohli featured in “Midnight Mass” as Sheriff Hassan and in “Bly Manor” as the household chef (and also love interest), Owen Sharma.

That relationship will continue with the feature film “The Life of Chuck,” which is reportedly now in post-production. Flanagan produced, wrote and directed the film, which will feature Kohli in a currently unidentified role. It’s also not known when, or where, it’ll be released.

Issa Q: When is Daniel Craig going to do the next “Knives Out” movie?

A: Work is already being done on the third film, which still just has the working title “Knives Out 3.” However, Daniel Craig (“Skyfall,” 2012) won’t get involved until later this year.

Director and writer Rian Johnson (“Looper,” 2012) said after the writers’ strike ended in October that he was “diving in full force” on writing the script. “I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head,” he told TheWrap.com. “It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.”

And then, of course, it’s a matter of filming the damn thing. But there’s good news there: Deadline.com reported that shooting is planned to start later this year.

That is, of course, where Craig comes in. He stars in the whodunit mystery series as politely wily private detective Benoit Blanc.

It’s worth noting here that three years passed between the first film, “Knives Out” (2019), and the sequel, “Glass Onion” (2022), so the third one isn’t technically “late” until 2026. And given the lavish sets and sprawling casts that Johnson favors for these movies, it’s not unrealistic to think that we won’t see it until then.

It’s been a season to remember thanks to the ongoing drama between Kyle Richards, Sutton Stracke, Garcelle Beauvais and the rest of the ladies. The first part of this reunion episode offers a few mea culpas, but expect more shade to be thrown.

Island’

brings tropical twist to beloved game

You have never seen “Deal or No Deal” like this before. Making its way to screens with new twists, turns and tropical delights, the all-new “Deal or No Deal Island” premieres Monday, Feb. 26, on NBC.

From executive producer (and former “DOND” host) Howie Mandel (“America’s Got Talent”), this latest iteration of the game is hosted by Joe Manganiello (“True Blood”), who will lead players — and us viewers back home — through this inaugural season of “Survivor”-like gameplay, featuring 13 highly unsuspecting contestants, endless negotiations and more money than you can count.

“Full Swing” - Season 2 (Netflix — March 6, Season Premiere)

Following a diverse group of professional golfers, both returning favorites and new faces, this immersive docuseries goes on and off the course across a relentless season of competition on the PGA TOUR, including all four of golf’s Major championships — the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open Championship and The Open Championship.

“‘Deal or No Deal Island’ is set to bring back all we loved about the beloved OG series: high-stakes competition, millions of dollars in prize money, and, of course, the elusive Banker,” NBC explains. “But this time, it’s upping the stakes by bringing contestants to a mysterious tropical locale where they’ll compete against each other in a series of intense challenges.”

Iconic “DOND” features will be back, including the Banker and the iconic briefcases, which will be hidden around the island. Between them, the cases will hold over $200 million of prize money (in cash), that the contestants will be able to split amongst each other.

NBC’s news release says, “In each episode, players vie to get their hands on the highest-value briefcase for a chance to gain immunity and choose a fellow player to enter The Temple, where they must play a high-stakes game of Deal or No Deal. The devious Banker is always watching and will raise the stakes with tests of strategy and greed. At the end of the season, the last player standing will

face the Banker to potentially win the biggest prize in ‘Deal or No Deal’ history.”

An Entertainment Weekly exclusive shared the 13 contestants who will be taking part in the inaugural season, one of whom is “Survivor” star “Boston” Rob Mariano (“Survivor: Marquesas,” “Survivor: Redemption Island,” which he won, and more).

Another familiar face is Claudia Jordan, who was featured in two seasons of “The Celebrity Apprentice,” and in “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” What fans may not know, however, is that Jordan also appeared as a briefcase model in “Deal or No Deal,” from 2005 to 2009.

As for Boston Rob, he recently promised EW that he “[wants] to figure out a way to control the game,” and judging by his resume, he just may be able to do it.

The all-new series, “Deal or No Deal Island,” premieres Monday, Feb. 26, on NBC.
