Mavs hope Irving is the final piece to a championship team

The Brooklyn Nets’ recent teardown of the remainder of their “Big Three” was one of the most disheartening things for a basketball fan to see in recent memory. But you’ll have to excuse the Dallas Mavericks’ faithful if they don’t share that sentiment.

For in getting eight-time All Star point guard Kyrie Irving in a trade deadline deal, the Mavs may have vaulted themselves to the forefront of the playoff conversation in the Western Conference.

In his first four games since joining Dallas on Feb. 6, Irving has been a monster, averaging 28 points per game on 53.3 percent shooting, with seven assists and 1.3 steals. And from three-point range, he’s been blistering, with a 43 percent success rate.

His most impressive performance came against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 13, when down by 26 he led a furious charge with 26 fourth quarter points only to fall short on the final possession in a 124-121 loss at home.

Though his time in Brooklyn was a mix of at-times brilliant play, controversy and overall weirdness, the Mavericks hope the 30-year-old Australian can put all that behind him and focus on winning. They’re betting he can form a formidable tandem with their homegrown superstar Luka Doncic and lead the team up the West standings and into a top postseason seeding in the season’s final weeks.

Irving and the Mavs can be seen in action Monday, March 13, when they play host to the conference and division rival Memphis Grizzlies in a game airing on ESPN.

Everything all at once, Oscar-wise: ABC televises 95th movie awards

The movie business has changed a lot in recent years, but the Oscars remain a constant of it.

Though more films have returned to theatrical-only releases than in earlier phases of the COVID-19 situation, the future of some theaters is in jeopardy ... and a significant number of them have closed. Still, there are enough releases and places to see them for the Academy Awards to have an impact on how they perform economically.

Jimmy Kimmel has his third stint as host of the ceremony as ABC broadcasts the 95th edition Sunday, March 12, from Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.

One never can be sure, but it seems unlikely that a year later, a repeat of what immediately became one of history’s most famous slaps will be delivered on the Oscar stage (unless someone does something along those lines to reference that moment in jest). Kimmel is sure to have other subjects for pointed barbs, such as the absence of female nominees in the category of best director – a fact that critics were quick to point out after the nominations announcement in January.

As for those who are nominees, the fantasy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads the contenders with 11 Oscar bids. The latest screen version of the war drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the

seriocomic “The Banshees of Inisherin” follow with nine each, and the Presley biography “Elvis” has eight. Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans” registers with seven nominations, and the box-office blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” has six. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Tar” have five each.

Q: Where is the appeal for you in serving as host of “Farmer Wants a Wife”?

A: When you get into these stories, it is compelling ... and for me, it’s always with my beginner’s eyes, and with the heart of an artist in terms of being super-playful and seeing things through a specific lens. I get a lot of joy out of this show.

Q: How comfortably has production of the series fit into your schedule overall?

A: You know, the universe chuckles at me often. I’ve been working on a movie project in Atlanta, and the majority what we shot for “Farmer Wants a Wife” overlapped on the weekends between the five-day-a-week, 14-hour workdays (on the movie). It has worked out wonderfully well, though, and I’m super-grateful when it does come this way, because it does allow me to expand in other areas.

Q: Does your son, Magnus, travel with you when you have so much professional activity?

A: He does come with me. For example, last fall was super-busy, so he would go in and out of school and come to meet me. I feel like (the name Magnus) is very versatile. It has a dark romanticism to it. He could be a strongman of a ballet dancer. He could go anywhere with that name.

Q: A good amount of your music in recent years has involved cover versions of songs popularized by other artists. What do you like about doing those?

A: I’m a singer-songwriter and I love writing, but the truth is that while I am most known for country, I love writing and performing across the board no matter the genre. I really enjoy it.

Q: How has been it taking this iconic character on and making it your own?

A: Just as you said, making it my own has been the real luxury of this part because it’s by no means a remake. You know, that’s what they were clear about from the beginning, from the get-go, that it was a reimagining. And the writers themselves were very open to me building this character with them and they set about building onto (it) in a way that’s interesting. You know, ladling him with kind of conflict and inner turmoil and a lot wrong in his life, it makes for kind of a more layered and gritty character.

So the building of this kind of iconic literary figure from our point of view, from my television point of view has been, as I said, a real luxury to be able to build that character with them in a way that’s very interesting and engaging.

Q: How much does the fedora help?

A: Bizarrely or not, it helps me a lot. That’s the kind of external influence that helps me a lot. You know, Emma Potter, the costume designer in Season 1 who created the character with me – or should I say very kindly allowed the two of us to create together – we really built that character literally from the boots up.

And there was a real specificity to the first season in that Mason was buying clothes off corpses. So the kind of free range of that was a lot of fun. And just as a kind of aid, having the fedora as a kind of an extra prop, really, always comes in incredibly handy.

Q: There’s an attitude that comes with the fedora.

A: Yeah, and you can’t help but kind of feel in that period when you’re in those clothes, certainly surrounded by 300 or 400 extras who are also similarly dressed. So it always lends itself.

Q: Have you done any of the fan conventions – including the Comic-Cons –for the “Teen Wolf” series and movie?

A: Yes. I’ve been lucky enough to go to both the larger San Diego and New York Comic-Cons while the show was on the air, and we always love all of the friends and fans of the show that show up for that. And yes, we have a very strong fandom around the world. We’ve been everywhere from Australia to Italy to Rome to France to all across the world, even Warsaw. There’s a Comic-Con in Warsaw that I was able to go to. And you name a continent and “Teen Wolf” is on it.

Q: How were you received in Poland?

A: It was amazing. That was one of my favorite trips, actually, just culturally, spiritually to be there. To be at the first Warsaw Comic-Con was pretty special, and it was very well attended and we’re all so very lucky that we’re able to go to these larger Cons and then we can kind of blend fandoms and be able to be with some of the “Game of Thrones” characters, and so that was a lot of fun.

Q: And the fans at these Cons are very well educated and very knowledgeable.

A: Yes, and I feel like when you create a mythical world, when you create a place like Beacon Hills or when you’re talking about shows like “The Walking Dead,” you have to really honor the spirit of what you create because the fans will know. They’ll figure it out. They’ll be the ones that’ll be like, “Hey, you can’t do that because X, Y, Z.” And I feel like our writers and our creators have a lot of attention to detail to make sure that we keep consistent within our mystique.

“Succession” (HBO — season premiere, March 26)

With the sale of Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) inching closer, the prospect of the sale rears angst and division among the Roys as they picture their lives once the deal is done. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs a future with diminished cultural and political weight. Not surprisingly, battle lines have been drawn with Logan (Brian Cox), Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), Greg (Nicholas Braun) on one side and the four Roy siblings on the other in the Season 4 premiere.

In her return to The Metropolitan Opera after five years, Renee Fleming counted “The Hours” as her ticket back.

Having championed the project, the much-honored icon starred with fellow soprano (and Broadway staple) Kelli O’Hara and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in a specially commissioned rendering by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts of the Michael Cunningham novel – inspired by Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway” – that also inspired an Oscar-winning 2002 movie. Staged in New York last November and December, the production will be televised on PBS’ “Great Performances at the Met” Friday, March 17 (check local listings).

“I was excited and surprised when Peter Gelb, who runs The Met, didn’t hesitate and said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it,’ “ recalls the pleasant Fleming, who recently won her fifth Grammy Award for the classical album “Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene” (a collaboration with pianist and conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin that includes a Puts composition). “It had been so long since I had seen the movie of ‘The Hours’ when it came out, it wasn’t on my mind. We were looking at lists of ideas, and the minute I saw the title, I knew it was perfect. It has so many relevant stories, it’s full of modern, interesting topics.”

editor Clarissa, who stages a party for her AIDS-afflicted best friend in the late 1990s. (Meryl Streep played Clarissa in the movie version.) DiDonato portrays author Woolf in the 1920s, and O’Hara sings the part of guilt-ridden 1940s family woman Laura.

“It’s a story of women throughout time as supporters,” Fleming confirms. “All of the singers in the piece were really fantastic and beautifully cast. The notion of legacy is the notion that there’s something that you leave behind, since our voices are relatively shortlived. The interesting thing is that each voice is unique, so once it stops singing, you never hear that sound again, so it’s wonderful to have this document of all of us at this particular stage of our careers.”
