Formula One returns down under for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix

Round 3 of the 2024 Formula One season gets underway as drivers make their way down under for one of the fastest courses on the calendar. The Australian Grand Prix kicks off Friday, March 22, and runs through Sunday, March 24, at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, with practices, qualifiers and race day all broadcast live on ESPN [US]/TSN [CA].

With a new season comes new challenges, and for the Visa Cash App RB Formula One team, formerly known as Red Bull Racing’s sister team, AlphaTauri, expectations are certainly higher. RB Formula One made great steps forward in the off-season, including upgrades to the newly branded VCARB 01 front and rear suspension and a gearbox from Red Bull, with the hopes of making some significant progress on the grid.

Following the release of driver Nyck de Vries last summer, RB Formula One was able to provide 34-year-old Daniel Ricciardo the opportunity to make his return to F1, proving to be a solid choice with Ricciardo going on to earn the team’s best finish last year — a seventh at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Masterpiece romance: Lasting love takes to the screen in ‘Alice & Jack’

Show PBS some love this St. Patrick’s Day when “Alice & Jack” makes its premiere on Masterpiece. Starring Irish actor and screenwriter Domhnall Gleeson (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” 2011) and English actress Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie,” 2022), the six-episode drama series premieres Sunday, March 17, on the network.

While “Alice & Jack” premieres to North American audiences midway through the month of March, it first premiered on England’s Channel 4 this past Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) — a timely release due to the ongoing romantic theme of the series.

The six-episode series, which was created by “Mad About You” and “Mad Men” producer Victor Levin, spans 15 years and “explores the seminal question of whether the bonds between us are stronger than the forces that would tear us apart” (per PBS).

When Jack (Gleeson), a calm, reserved scientist, meets a young, tightly wound financier named Alice (Riseborough), the pair instantly hit it off despite their many differences in both lifestyle and personality. They spend just one night together before returning to their separate lives, but over the course of a decade and a half, Jack and Alice meet repeatedly — often by chance — and begin to question what it is about the other person that keeps them both coming back.

Described by Fremantle, the show’s dis-

tribution company, as a “love story for the ages,” “Alice & Jack” is arguably a more realistic representation of romance in the modern world than the traditional meet-cute romantic comedy. With so many possibilities to interfere with love, trust and friendship these days, the nature of our relationships have changed drastically, and TV fans need look no further than these star-crossed lovers for confirmation.

Following the series’ September 2023 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, PBS Masterpiece executive Suzanne Simpson described “Alice & Jack” as “exceptionally beautiful and profound” and added that Masterpiece is “proud to add” it to their lineup. And while it is easy to praise the show for its will-they-won’t-they quality that has every hopeless romantic on the edge of their seat, critics, such as Marya E. Gates of RogerEbert.com, are just as quick to point out that “Alice & Jack” is far from a fairytale romance.

“As each character does unthinkable things, Levin’s script slowly reveals emotional layers that color why they might make such decisions, asking viewers to examine the thornier sides of life,” writes Gates, later adding that the miniseries is “more honest about human behavior than most romances allow.”

All this said, the heavy subject matter and at times brutal honesty do not weigh the series down, a feat that is largely due to moments of comic relief on the part of the supporting cast. Chief among these providers of levity is Aisling Bea, who plays Jack’s laterin-life partner, Lynn. Bea, now best known for her work in the Irish comedy “This Way Up” and the low-key sci-fi dramedy “Living With Yourself,” is gaining popularity stateside for her quick wit and cheerful banter — a welcome addition to the uncertainty brought to the screen by Alice and Jack.

Q: I enjoyed Hilary Swank’s newspaper drama “Alaska Daily.” Why did it have such a short run?

A: The main answer is the one that applies to so many shows that don’t last long … ratings. ABC expectedly wasn’t shy about promoting that it had a double Oscar winner as the star of one of its shows, and the high hopes for it were evident from its getting a slot on Thursday, a night anchored by one of the network’s biggest and most enduring hits, “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Though there was some response from critics and viewers alike to the theme of the plight of Indigenous women in Alaska, that didn’t translate into a wider audience, with a significant dip in the numbers after the show’s premiere. It likely didn’t help that the series had an extended hiatus that saw it go off the air in November 2022 and not return until March 2023, which had to have impacted any momentum it might have been building.

The back half of the lone season of “Alaska Daily” proved interesting for another reason. At the point she filmed those episodes, Swank was pregnant with twins, though her journalist character Eileen Fitzgerald wasn’t expecting. Therefore, the actress was filmed creatively, using angles that concealed her condition — with head-and-shoulders shots, scenes of her captured from a distance, or views of her wearing bulky clothing.

What ultimately was the series finale set up “Alaska Daily” to continue if ABC opted for that, but it wasn’t to be. The last episode aired at the end of March 2023, and the cancellation notice came when the next season’s lineup was announced that May.

Q: I can’t believe “FBI: International” [spoilers deleted — see below if you’re caught up on the latest season].

A: The thing “FBI: International” did, which was removed from the question to avoid spoiling a major Season 3 event, is write off Agent Jamie Kellett.

As action shows like this go, it was a pretty gentle sendoff: Kellett said she was transferring to the D.C. office to “go back home” and deal with the grief from her sister’s death.

The fact that she didn’t die leaves it open for Kellett to return, either in cameos or on a fulltime basis.

In the meantime, Heida Reed (“One Day,” 2011), who played Kellett since “FBI: International’s” 2021 debut, has not announced her next move.

The day after her final episode aired, she posted a simple goodbye on Instagram.

“Thank you so much to the fans for letting Jamie into your hearts.

Agent Kellett out!”

We don’t even know if Reed will keep plying her trade in English-language television — her previous gig was in her native Iceland (and Icelandic), starring in a show called “Stella Blomkvist.”

I say “English-language” because, though “FBI: International” was an American show, it was actually filmed in Hungary, where the show was set. And her other most recent gig was the British series “Poldark.”

So even if she continues to work in English, it’s not clear if the result will be easily seen in North America.

So, bad news overall for fans of Agent Kellett. But as I said, the door remains open for her return. And in the meantime, the show goes on: that was just the first episode, so there’s plenty more of Season 3 to come.

Q: I haven’t seen the actor who played Phil on “Modern Family” since the show ended. Where did he go?

A: After “Modern Family” ended in 2020, Ty Burrell immediately went into the sound booth. That is to say that his next project was a voice gig, as the dad in the NBC animated sitcom “Duncanville” (hence why you haven’t “seen” him).

That show ended in 2022, though, and Burrell hasn’t been seen or heard since. That could change soon, though. He’s reportedly working on another sitcom, called “Forgive and Forget,” that’s been optioned by ABC.

There are a lot of “mights” here, though. It was only announced (on Deadline.com) that ABC might buy the show — there was no actual filming being done. And that announcement happened a year ago, so it might be dead in the water at this point. And if it is still being made, Burrell only might appear on the show — when the announcement was made, Burrell was listed as an executive producer.

But the premise — about an adult man whose aging father is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, forcing them to move in together again — seems right up Burrell’s street. Both “Modern Family” and “Duncanville” played in the same field, wringing heartwarming laughs out of often uncomfortable family dynamics.

Morbius FX 7 p.m.

Sometimes, the cure is worse than the disease. When Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) attempts to heal his rare blood disorder and save others suffering the same fate, his initial success is quickly overshadowed by a supernatural form of vampirism.

Married at First Sight LIFE 7 p.m.

They’ve been looking for love their entire lives. So, after failing miserably, they’re ready to let science take the reins and pick them the perfect partner. But even with the technology at hand, there’s still a lack of trust in the algorithm.

Love Story TCM 7 p.m.

Considered one of the most romantic films by the American Film Institute, follow the love story of Oliver (Ryan O’Neal) and Jenny (Ali MacGraw). Despite their opposed upbringings, they fall in love. However, things take a tragic turn when Jenny falls ill.

Kodak moments: Cameras turn to photographers from around the globe

Created and directed by Academy Award and Emmy-winning filmmakers E.Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin — the minds behind the 2018 documentary, “Free Solo” — the docuseries, “Photographer,” premieres as part of the duo’s “first look” deal with National Geographic, airing its first episode Monday, March 18, on the network, before streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.

According to a description released by Disney, each hour-long episode in the series follows the life of a different iconic photographer, journeying from the artist’s childhood and early career to their present-day life and ongoing projects.

“From the front lines of war to the covers of fashion magazines and the depths of the oceans,” Disney explains, “audiences will be taken on a journey alongside these renowned photographers who have spent a lifetime in the endless pursuit of perfecting their craft to learn their incredible stories.”

The news release also promises that, “through verité footage of their current mission interwoven with backstory, archival materials and interviews, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of each photogra-

pher’s process, how they found themselves behind the camera, and discover how they see and experience the world.”

First greenlit for a single pilot episode, the series first focused on National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year — couple Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier — who are often quoted to be “passionate about exploration, the oceans and each other.”

This pilot episode, which will now air as the series premiere, joins the pioneering duo as they begin an ambitious, four-year expedition aboard the SeaLegacy One, taking the vessel on its maiden voyage out to the sparkling waters surrounding the Bahamas.
