Here comes Judge – and the Yankees – in ‘23
Aaron Judge had a season for the ages in 2022, his 62 home runs surpassing Roger Maris’ American League mark of 61 in 1961. And that was followed by a contract to match.
No, the New York Yankees weren’t about to let their superstar center fielder walk to the San Francisco Giants or anywhere else in free agency, so they secured him through his age 39 season with a nine-year, $360 million contract.
The 2022 AL MVP has been a stalwart since arriving full time at Yankee Stadium in 2017, hitting a then-rookie record of 52 homers to go with 114 RBIs, a .284 average, a .422 on-base percentage and an OPS of 1.049. Rookie of the Year honors would follow, to go along with his first Silver Slugger Award and All-Star appearance.
But that would pale in comparison to his 2022 campaign in which his 62 homers, league-leading 131 RBI, .311 average, .425 on-base percentage and 1.111 OPS would put him in the record books alongside Maris, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle as an all-time Yankee great.

Bob Odenkirk brings ‘Lucky Hank’ to ornery life in AMC/AMC+ dramedy
Hank Devereaux Jr. is a man who is stuck.
As played by Bob Odenkirk in the half-hour dramedy “Lucky Hank,” premiering Sunday, March 19, on AMC and AMC+, he’s the chairman of the English department at Railton College, a badly underfunded school in the Pennsylvania Rust Belt.
Like his employer, which he calls “mediocrity’s capital,” Hank is also struggling. He’s not really happy with academia nor his department and his position in it, and his do-nothing approach seems to scream “fire me.” But he has people who care about him, especially wife Lily (Mireille Enos, “The Killing”), who truly loves this curmudgeon and is entertained by his antics. But that doesn’t hold true for everyone.
We meet Hank as he’s delivering a spirit-crushing critique to a spoiled student, which gets the attention of school ad-
ministration. With his chairmanship and ultimately his job now in jeopardy, Hank appears outwardly happy about the prospect of being forced to move on. But is he?
The eight episode series was created by Paul Lieberstein (“The Office”) and Aaron Zelman (“Silicon Valley”) from the novel “Straight Man” by Richard Russo, and features a tour-de-force performance by Odenkirk, who found the character to be a complete and welcome departure from his “Better Call Saul” role of shady lawyer Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman.
“While he’s a curmudgeon,” the actor explains, “he is like a lot of curmudgeons kind of beloved for the way he’s a crab. Like his wife finds it funny, people find him funny. They don’t take it seriously and they get a laugh out of it and he knows they get a laugh out of it, so he knows he can kind of indulge this crabby side of himself and everyone will just go, ‘Oh, that’s Hank. That’s funny. Just laugh at it.’
“And he has a daughter, they fight like crazy but they love each other. And he has a wife, they’ve been together for like 25, 26 years and they love each other. So I loved playing a character who was funny, smart, good with language and had love around him and a life worth saving. So that really appealed to me an awful lot and for me made the character so fundamentally different from Jimmy McGill.”
But like Jimmy, Hank is a complicated guy with an estrangement in his life, in his case his much more successful father Hank Sr., a renowned film critic, which haunts him and is a relationship the series will explore.
“There’s an emptiness inside him that he’s very afraid of,” Odenkirk says, “afraid of feeling it, afraid of thinking about it but it’s very present. It drives him in a lot of ways.”

OF THE BLACKLIST ON NBC
Q: You attended the 200th episode celebration, correct?
A: Yes, and that was surreal. Talk about walking onto a set where everybody’s been working together for so long. I think it was my fourth episode ... . But yeah, it just really reinforced the idea that so many people are working in front and behind the cameras together to bring this to life. I mean, there were just so many people in the war room that day gathered around that 200th episode cake and (they) had (showrunner) John Eisendrath fly in and speak and to have James (Spader) say a few words that really cemented that feeling of being part of a family. Like people have gone through so much over the years while filming this show and yeah, it just makes me feel so special to come in for the final season.
Q: Did you get to meet the actress who played your character’s mother in Season 1, Parminder Nagra, yet?
A: I have not had the chance to meet her but when I was in primary school, that film “Bend It Like Beckham” came out and I just remember thinking, “If she can do it, I can do it.” (Laughs) And ever since then, I’ve been following her career and she’s one of the South Asian actresses I grew up watching who reminded me that there is a place for us on the screen. So it would be a dream come true to meet her. I really hope I do get to.

Q: With all the acclaim “Abbott Elementary” received for its first season, how has it been to do a Season 2 that lives up to that?
A: The first season was much easier to do, because we got to film and edit and write the majority of the season before it even went to air. I guess what we learned from last year was to trust what we did. We did a very good job.
We really got to be in this bubble and create this wonderful first season of television, and I think the lesson we learned was to do the exact same thing again. It is harder for our cast. Tim Shaw (“Street Genius”) is your host for this British documentary series that explores how people can use science to succeed in life, focusing on such scenarios as whether it’s better to use a foot or a crowbar to smash through a locked door in an emergency or whether women are more attracted to men who dance versus read.

Q: You’ve also had the challenge of making more episodes for Season 2 than you did for Season 1. As writer, producer and performer, how have you found that?
A: I want to make sure that we have things for people to tune into and be excited about each week. That’s just hard to do with 22 (episodes). With 13, I knew I could put something in there that would make people show up. In this ever-changing but binge-worthy climate, this is not something people would be able to binge immediately, so I want to make sure they will be back with us every week that
we are on the air.
Show-running has become harder. I really have downgraded to just creative (processes) and nothing else, because it is all I can do. My co-producers, Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern, were already incredible. They stepped it up with support with everything else that comes with show-running. And our directors have been amazing with the process and really supporting me.
Q: How were you as a school student yourself?
A: I was a good kid. I did go where my mom taught for the majority of the time. I was very good because I had to be, but I loved learning and was a good student.

A: Well, just delightful. I mean, Damian is such a gentleman and very smart and I felt an incredible sense of sympathy for Damian before we started, obviously because of the recent passing of his wife, Helen (McCrory, “Peaky Blinders”), who I had worked with 20 years prior when we did “The Count of Monte Cristo.” And I adored Helen. She really was a delightful, wonderful, incredible sort of striking woman and I got on very well with her. And we had a good old laugh when we were filming that film, and she always stuck in my head as this fantastically smart woman. And I never saw her again. But over the years, I saw that those two had gotten together and that they were married, and so I just knew that.
And then of course, I’d heard that she was unwell and then I heard she passed away and then I knew I was working with Damien and just went “Ohhh!” He didn’t want and need sympathy from me but I couldn’t help but feel like I just wanted to give him a big hug as soon as I met him. Do you know what I mean? So on some level, that was certainly for me quite a bonding, very personal sort of connection.
Q: Your rendition of “Are You Lonesome Tonight” in the premiere was quite impressive.
A: (Laughs) Oh yes, well thank you. I love making music, and in fact just before ... I was literally putting a synthesizer back together that I pulled apart. So I was out in the studio trying to screw that thing back together again.
Q: Are you a piano player?
A: I’m not a piano player. I mean, I write songs on piano and I write songs on guitar and I tell people I use those instruments but I don’t really play them. So I’m much more a singer than an instrumentalist but I’ve mucked around with instruments my whole life, and I love recording and I love engineering and I love arranging. But I have friends who are real players who put me to shame.

A baseball great contemplates his legacy in Prime Video’s ‘Reggie’
To baseball fans of a certain age, Reggie Jackson was perhaps the premier slugger of his generation, a Hall-of-Fame clutch hitter with five World Series titles, an MVP award and numerous other laurels to his credit. But at 74, he’s also a man in search of his legacy, which is detailed in a documentary coming to Prime Video.
In “Reggie,” which begins streaming Friday, March 24, we meet Jackson at his home in Monterey, Calif., where he’s considering his legacy as a trailblazing Black athlete fighting for dignity, respect and a place at the table.
During his life and career – which spanned 1967-87 with the Oakland A’s, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and California Angels – Jackson witnessed a dramatic shift in race relations in this country, from the beginning of his playing days in Birmingham, Ala., at the height of the civil rights movement; to Oakland and the rise of the Black Panthers; and to New York as baseball’s highest player in the poverty-stricken Bronx.
The film features interviews with a very candid and at times raw Jackson as well as with former A’s teammates Joe Rudi, Vida
Reggie Jackson
Blue and Rollie Fingers. He also sits down with fellow legends Julius Erving, Hank Aaron, Derek Jeter and others to discuss their own experiences, how far Black athletes have really come and the leagues they want to leave behind for future generations.
The film is directed by Alex Stapleton (“Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea”), who came at this not as a baseball fan but as somewhat of an outsider, which she thinks gave Jackson a level of comfort that enabled him to be open.
