McIlroy seeks first win at Augusta National

At 33, Rory McIlroy has accomplished just about everything there is to accomplish in golf –multiple wins in majors, a FedEx Cup championship, money list title, World No. 1 ranking. But there is one glaring omission that is preventing from realizing another, a Masters title that would give him a career Grand Slam.

Indeed, the native of Northern Ireland has played well at Augusta National over the years, with a fourth place finish in 2015, ties for fifth in 2018 and 2020 and last year’s second place standing thanks to a sizzling final round. But no wins to show for it.

Entering Sunday 10 strokes back a year ago, McIlroy made birdies on six holes and an eagle on another in a round highlighted by a brilliant hole-out from a bunker on No. 18, to finish the day at eight-under 64. Unfortunately, it was not enough to overcome the deficit he had put himself in through the first three rounds and he wound up three strokes behind Scottie Scheffler, who bagged his first major.

As for this season, he’s happy with his performance overall and at Bay Hill in early March in particular, despite losing the lead in the final round and finishing second to Kurt Kitayama. He feels his driving and his overall play are getting to where he wants them to be just as the big tournament is coming into view.

He’ll be looking to don his first green jacket when he tees off in the golf year’s first major, the Masters, which airs Thursday through Sunday, April 6-9, on ESPN and CBS, from Augusta National in northwest Georgia.

CBS’ three ‘FBI’ shows join forces for a night

CBS’ “FBI” teams usually work different cases on Tuesday nights, but a rare crossover event is about to unite the three series.

On April 4, the Dick Wolf-produced crime dramas span continents – and, in two cases, switch time slots – to tell a new story. “FBI: International” leads the night as “FBI’s” Jubal and Nina (played by Jeremy Sisto and recurring guest star Shantel VanSanten) head for Italy to join Forrester (Luke Kleintank) and the “FBI: International” team to seek a missing, Rome-based U.S. businessman. The disappearance may be linked to a potential terror plot in New York, where “FBI’s” Maggie (Missy Peregrym) is prompted to summon Remy of “FBI: Most Wanted” (Dylan McDermott) for help, counting on his background in dealing with global gangs.

“It actually spans (the production of) four or five episodes over all the different

shows, because we can’t all be filming (the crossover story) at the same time,” Peregrym explains. “We’re just like, ‘How are we gonna pull this off?’ And then we do, and it’s like, ‘Yay!’ We’re also having to go international with it here, so it’s a lot.”

Noting that her own “FBI” series is “fast-paced anyway,” Peregrym acknowledges that each of the franchise’s shows has its own tone and style ... and she adds with a knowing laugh, “Ours is just chaos. We get a script two days before we start filming it, and we just hit the ground running. And we’re all excited when we complete it.”

In terms of the characters from the parent “FBI” drama and their involvement in the crossover, Peregrym reports that the shared story is particularly “Scola-heavy,” referencing the federal agent played by John Boyd. Regular “FBI” viewers will realize that he has more than a casual link to the “FBI: International” hour, since Nina is pregnant with Scola’s child.

Getting to work with regular cast members from the other “FBI” shows is “fun, definitely,” Peregrym attests: “We show up and make the best thing we can. Everyone comes with an idea of their character, and we just roll with it. We all have our processes and insert certain things into the script that might not necessarily be written. So, Dylan will do what he would do on his show on our show.”

Peregrym is grateful that the crossover comes near the end of the “FBI” season, rather than right after she returned from maternity leave last fall after the birth of her second child. “That would have been very hectic,” she confirms. “I still can’t believe I came back to work three months after having the baby, but she’s doing really well, and we’re kind of getting into the next phase of things.”

Q: What spoke to you about “The Company You Keep”?

A: Honestly, I’ve been calling this my dream role ever since the first read. There are a couple of different reasons that drew me to it. First, I love that you have two characters in Charlie and Emma who are very seemingly different at first glance. But you happen to meet them when they’re going through the exact same moment in both their lives. And it’s that moment when you meet somebody and they just get it, they get you, and you think, ‘Oh, it’s you. It’s gonna be you.’ And then it’s on.

And I love that you have this Asian American female protagonist and she’s navigating love and struggles in career and then she goes home to a mom that’s just a lot. And I just was really excited about playing a character like that that’s really fully fleshed out, especially on network TV.

Q: Did your chemistry with Milo come right away?

A: I’m really grateful because he’s such a generous scene partner and also a fantastic producer. And we had the luxury of doing some rehearsals with our director for the pilot Ben Younger and an acting coach that he personally loves working with, Kim Gillingham. So I think having that creative space to collaborate and create trust together before we ever stepped on set when you’re being pulled in a million directions and the hours are crazy, it was just really nice.

Q: Filming on Season 2 of “Yellowjackets” is complete, but Season 3 has been ordered. Will you have much downtime before that begins production?

A: I was trying, but it didn’t really work! I don’t know if I’m allowed to say what it is yet, but I took a job, so I’m going back to work. My dream when I started acting was that I wouldn’t have to have another job, and that I could make a living at it. I never needed to be rich or famous. I just wanted to do work that was interesting to me, and that has happened. Honestly, everything else feels like the cherry on top.

Q: Frequently shown on cable, “Up in the Air” is one of the most popular of your many movies. What are your memories of making it?

A: It was just a dream from beginning to end. That whole thing was so fun and exciting and creative, and George (Clooney) is just the nicest person you could ever work. It was just great.

Q: You’re also known for the great kindness you show others on social media. Is that easy for you to maintain?

A: Sometimes, people will write something mean to me ... and it

happened a lot after “The Last of Us” (the recent HBO series on which Lynskey guest-starred). People had all kinds of feelings about it, but life is hard for everybody. Everyone is a human being who’s struggling, and people act out in all kinds of different ways. I don’t think some of them really think about the fact that they’re addressing these messages to a human being. For me, there’s no point in engaging every person. I’d rather engage (those who are) positive. That’s the best way to go about your day.

A: It was good. It was great. Me and Shalom got on really well. She’s also a very talented actor and really funny, so we would just kind of have a giggle in between scenes to be honest. We’d just do it and then when we had a bit of time off in between scenes, we’d be there like messing around and sort of trying to make each other laugh. So it was a really positive and fun set despite the darkness of the series.

Q: That seems to be a common observation among actors on shows with heavy themes, that there is more levity off screen as a way of coping with the dark material on it.

A: Definitely, I think that you can’t really like sit in that darkness for too long (laughs) because it can get pretty bleak. So I think you do find ways to break the tension of it and be able to come out of it a bit.

Q: How was it working in the period garb?

A: Oh, very, very warm. We shot in the middle of summer in the U.K. It was a really hot summer and to be fair, we shot from kind of winter through summer, through to midsummer, towards the end of summer so it was warm a lot of the time. There’s a lot of layers. You know, waist coat, jacket, overcoat, necktie, leather boots, trousers up to your stomach. I mean, it’s amazing, you get to walk around looking like someone from the 1800s, which is really fun. But there were times where there was one day that we filmed towards the end of the shoot, I think in the last week, and it was so hot.

Adventurers take on the brutal elements of the 50th State in USA’s ‘Race to Survive Alaska’

Alaska is not only the largest by area of the 50 states but also is home to some of the most diverse climates and environments on the planet. And many of them are on display in an adventure competition series coming to USA Network.

In “Race to Survive Alaska,” which premieres Monday, April 3, eight teams of two trek along 100 miles of Alaskan coastline through inhospitable terrain, from swamps and suffocating rainforest to mountain ranges and glaciers, to claim a spot in the finale where they’ll have a chance to win a $500,000 grand prize.

During this time, they’ll have to live on provisions and what food they can forage and catch, be on the lookout for threatening wildlife such as bears and fight off constant physical and mental exhaustion, which can result in infighting between teammates.

And the competitors here are a mix of elite athletes and survival experts, which executive producer Brian Lovett (“Deadliest Catch”) says made for an interesting complement of skills.

“Part of what this race does is it’s a great equalizer ...,” he explains. “You could haul ass through the race but then once you get

to survival camp, you don’t know what to do. So somebody who comes in who might be slower, once they get to survival camp, they know where to find food, they know what leaves and everything to eat or where to forage or to hunt ... which would then give them an edge because they’re resting and replenishing better than some of the faster teams. ... So we’ll see who would gain an edge in this race.”

Following each of the teams in this series, which was filmed last summer in the state’s southeast, were a camera person and a guide/medic, which not only helped the production team keep track of the locations of all the racers but also advise them on what to do in an inevitable bear encounter.
