Conforto seeks to recapture All-Star form with Giants

In the category of most intriguing offseason free agent signings, we present for your consideration Michael Conforto. Indeed, the slugging outfielder with the sweet lefty swing was supposed to be a perennial All Star by now. But injuries and inconsistent play short-circuited his career with the New York Mets, who opted to let the Washington State native test the market following a poor 2021 season.

So now, the nine-year veteran is starting over. He spent all of 2022 as an unsigned free agent, recovering

and rehabbing from shoulder surgery, then over the winter signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the San Francisco Giants with the idea that he would be their starting left fielder.

If he’s the player he was in his best years in New York, that will prove to be a bargain. He was an All Star in 2017, hit 34 homers in 2019 and was a middle-of-the-lineup force as recently as the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he batted .322 with nine homers, a .412 on-base percentage and an OPS of .927 in 54 games. But a nightmarish 2021 of .232, 14, .344, .729 and a subsequent shoulder injury followed and Conforto was left to salvage his flagging career elsewhere.

Early returns have it that his comeback is on track. In the first two-plus weeks of preseason play, Conforto reports his throwing shoulder feels normal and that he could be moved to his usual haunt of right field, a position that requires a stronger arm, if needed. His swing also appears to be rounding into shape with three homers in his first seven games.

He’ll get a chance to show his old team they made a mistake when he and the Giants close out a four-game home series against the Mets Sunday, April 23, on ESPN.

Carol Burnett marks a big birthday with NBC special

For anyone who’s ever thought Carol Burnett’s birthday should be a national event, now it is.

One way in which the much-beloved comedy icon will spend her special day Wednesday, April 26, is “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love,” NBC’s new all-star celebration of her. The show will be filled with tributes from many of her friends and peers, including Dame Julie Andrews and former “Carol Burnett Show” cohorts Vicki Lawrence and costumer Bob Mackie ... as well as Cher, Lily Tomlin, Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Carell, Amy Poehler, Aileen Quinn (“Annie”) and Bill Hader (to whom Burnett learned she is related on PBS’ “Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” recently).

Additional guests including Katy Perry, Bernadette Peters, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter and Jane Lynch perform musical segments during the show, each commemorating a significant part of Burnett’s career. Among those are Burnett’s portrayal of Miss

Hannigan in the 1982 film of “Annie,” and her trademark singing of “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together” (complete with ear-tug message to her grandmother) at the end of each episode of “The Carol Burnett Show.”

“It was quite a night,” six-time Primetime Emmy Award winner Burnett says of the March taping of the program. “I’m still kind of reeling from it. It’s not a roast or a birthday party, it’s really a variety show. A lot of my dear friends were there, and my ‘chum’ Julie Andrews was by my side the whole evening; she lives back East, and she flew out just for this. I was totally gobsmacked, I have to say!”

Burnett also has a Tony, a Grammy, a Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award among her many other accolades. Additionally, she has seven Golden Globe Awards, and that ceremony named an honor after her for contributions to television; appropriately, she was its first recipient.

The Burnett birthday event is, she reflects, “really a retrospective of everything I’ve ever done, practically, starting way back with my almost-first television appearance ... on ‘Omnibus.’ Then, (the special) covers ‘The Garry Moore Show’ when I was a regular on that, and movies that I’ve done, and TV appearances other than my own show. But, of course, ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ is in there, too.”

Expect the late Harvey Korman, Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner to be seen bountifully in “Carol Burnett Show” clips during the NBC special, but there will be no doubt who the evening’s central talent is. And just as it’s been for so many years, those physically near her – as well as those watching at home – will be so glad still to be in her orbit.

Q: How do you like depicting the work of forensic investigators on “CSI: Vegas”?

A: It’s amazing, like when we were doing the research for this, finding out how people can spend like three days in the bottom of a lab, just down in some DNA ... trying to figure out the stories of what happened to people’s loved ones. We’re on the amazing side of it, where we get to just sit and have like all the best of the best just at our beck and call (them) to be able to write a story about that.

For me, it’s hard to imagine (that at this) very second, there are people in the basements and the bowels of buildings doing this very thing that this show is talking about. (They) were in there last night, maybe got to work at 5:00 and maybe are on their second body or on their second tray of DNA. It really takes a lot just to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes like that.

Q: Are you enjoying playing the leader of the show’s CSI bureau?

A: I’m the youngest of three daughters, so it feels like vengeance on my sisters that I get to tell people what to do. My sisters always were the boss of me, so that’s nice.

It’s a fit. Women are very capable beings, you know. It’s just nice to be in the shoes of being able to step into that capability and, in so doing, set the example for other women and other people who want to step into that capability.

The new special “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” airs Wednesday on NBC.

Q: What do you like about the publicist you play in “Hearts in the Game”?

A: She’s a little outside of my normal comfort zone, and it was so fun. This movie definitely has beautiful emotional beats, and I love the stories that Hallmark is telling now, but this is such a different character for me. She’s feisty and confident and outspoken, and it was a challenge to play someone who feels she’s always great at what she does.

“Movie: A Tourist’s Guide to Love”

After a surprise break-up, a travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook, “She’s All at”) takes an undercover assignment to check out the tourism industry in Vietnam and winds up falling for her expat tour guide (Scott Ly, “Animal Kingdom”) in this romantic comedy from director Steven K. A: It’s funny. My mom loves baseball, so I grew up with it kind of in the background, but I’ve never been a massive fan myself. I certainly enjoy it, since it is part of my history. I think Marco Grazzini does a wonderful job of playing a major-league pitcher. The producers sent us to training camp, and we took batting practice! Q: Obviously the chefs and restaurateurs on “Restaurants at the End of the World” had to have an oversized sense of adventure. What about their diners? What commonalities did you see among them?

A: Very open-minded. And I will say the majority of my diners that come to my restaurants or to the events that I do where I cook for them, I’d say they’re fairly open-minded. Like you know, there’s a set menu or maybe they don’t even know what the menu is but this is on like the Nth degree. They’re going for the adventure and hopefully the food matches that sense of adventure as well. And it’s just this mutual unspoken understanding between the people running the restaurant and the people coming to the restaurant that are just like, “You know what? We’re going to explore this all together and we’re just going to see how it all unfolds.” And that to me is your dream diner, your dream guest.

Q: What do you hope viewers will come away with?

A: I mean, there’s so much. You know, it’s obviously a food-driven-ish show but I think there’s a lesson and exercise in just human resilience and opportunity and seeing how someone else decides to make these decisions and go forth with some of the decisions that they’re making.

At the end of the day, we get a glimpse into someone else’s life, which I find completely fascinating, food or otherwise. And so for me, I think, I hope that there’s something in here for everybody. Whether you like food or whether you know food or not, at the end of the way we all have to cook or we all have to cook in some respect, we all have to eat, and to be able to learn something about those two things that are necessities to us as humans through other people in other parts of the world I think is pretty spectacular.

Fenway Park, the Statue of Liberty, the American cowboy – these are all symbols of Americana and the American way of life. And now a series upcoming on PBS explores their history, the good and the bad.

“Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories With David Rubenstein,” premiering Wednesday, April 26 (check local listings), delves into the pasts of these iconic symbols – which include not only the above but also the Hollywood sign, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Gadsden (aka “Don’t Tread on Me”) Flag, the American Bald Eagle and Georgia’s Stone Mountain – to uncover little-known stories and examine how the meaning behind them has changed over time.

So in the eight episodes, viewers will learn that the Golden Gate Bridge was the target of more than 4,000 lawsuits before its construction, the initial idea behind the Statue of Liberty had nothing to do with immigration and the original American cowboy didn’t carry guns or fight native inhabitants.
