deGrom looks to put health woes behind him in Texas

When your team hasn’t seen the postseason berth in six years and has a pitching staff consistently among the game’s worst, the need for change is obvious. And so it is that Jacob deGrom became a Texas Ranger.

Signing a five-year, $185 million contract over the winter, the two-time Cy Young winner represents a significant upgrade and a significant gamble on the part of the Rangers. Yes, when the righthander is healthy, he’s arguably the best pitcher in the game, as his career ERA of 2.55 would indicate. And his arrival, along with those of righty Nathan Eovaldi and lefty Andrew Heaney, served notice to the rest of the league that the Rangers are officially in win now mode.

But in recent years, the 34-year-old Floridian has looked increasingly fragile. He missed the second half of 2021 with inflammation in his pitching elbow. Then last season, a stress reaction in his right shoulder kept him out all year until August. And when he returned, the Mets, his former team, kept him on a strict pitch limit, which they removed when they needed him for a playoff run. And at that point he looked very ordinary, pitching to a 1-3 record with a 4.50 ERA in five starts.

Little wonder, then, why the Mets balked at giving him more than a three-year deal. The Rangers, conversely, were all too eager to give him the long-term deal he desired.

Now presumably healthy again, he leads a revamped Texas rotation with newcomers Eovaldi and Heaney and returnees Jon Gray and Martin Perez, one that the Rangers faithful hope will help make the team a force in the American League West.

The Rangers can be seen in action against the Oakland A’s Saturday, May 13, on FS1.

TV+ profiles Michael J. Fox in ‘STILL’

Michael J. Fox’s life has entailed a lot, and as his many fans long have been aware, not all of it has been for the cameras.

The five-time Primetime Emmy Award winner was at the height of his popularity as an actor when he received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 1991, and both his private and public aspects get considerable attention in “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” which Apple TV+ debuts Friday, May 12. Directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) – whose wife, Elisabeth Shue, worked with Fox in the “Back to the Future” franchise – the film factors dramatic re-creations into Fox-narrated recollections of his experiences.

Though Fox admits he had early difficulty emotionally in dealing with his health assessment, he ultimately channeled the situation into the nonprofit Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. It has financed more than $1 billion in projects, including a recent breakthrough involving a

spinal fluid test. Fox also has traced his life and times in several memoirs: “Lucky Man,” “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist” and “No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality.”

Last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave Fox the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an acknowledgment of his significance as a member of the entertainment community. After he moved to Los Angeles from his native Canada, it wasn’t long before he was cast as politically minded Alex P. Keaton in the sitcom “Family Ties”; during its seven-season run, he also scored such movie successes as the three “Back to the Future” films, “Teen Wolf” and “The Secret of My Success,” plus image departures in “Bright Lights, Big City” (co-starring Fox’s wife, Tracy Pollan) and “Casualties of War.”

After making such early-1990s comedy films as “Doc Hollywood” and “For Love or Money,” Fox returned to weekly sitcom work in “Spin City.” Midway through that show’s run, he went public with his Parkinson’s news, and Charlie Sheen succeeded him in the series. However, Fox earned later acclaim for recurring guest roles on “Boston Legal,” “Rescue Me” and “The Good Wife.”

In 2012, Fox made a bid for series work again with “The Michael J. Fox Show,” which incorporated aspects of his real life as he played a TV newsman. It lasted less than one season, but afterward, Fox reunited with earlier movie co-star and longtime friend Kiefer Sutherland in a guest arc on the latter’s show “Designated Survivor.”

Though Fox maintains that he has retired from acting, he notes that could change under the right circumstances. For now, he’s back in the limelight by telling his own story in “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” and it’s a singular tale that’s worth relating – and hearing – firsthand.

Cedric the Entertainer OF

THE NEIGHBORHOOD ON CBS

Q: What do you think got “The Neighborhood” to its recent 100th episode, which you directed?

A: The cast is just really dynamic. That’s been really one of the key things, I believe, to the longevity and the success of the show that we’ve had. And, of course, our writing staff and just the whole family environment here.

We feel very blessed to be able to be doing a show on a big, major network at this time. I’m really proud of that (100th-episode) milestone, as well as getting the great news that we’ll be back for a sixth season.

Q: What was your own neighborhood like when you were young?

A: I grew up in St. Louis, definitely the kind of neighborhood where you knew everybody up and down the block, the different families. You knew the houses not to go to. All of these things were a part of being a great neighborhood.

Now, of course, it’s very different. One, I’m extremely rich. I have to live behind 13 gates, I believe, right now. There’s several security guards to even get to my own bedroom. (In the pandemic era,) everybody had to get outside. We were walking, and that was the first time in recent years that I had an opportunity to kind of find out about people who lived near me, and see their faces and know who they were.

Q: When did you first get the sense that comedy could be a career for you?

A: You know, for me, it was in junior high school, you know ... that eighth- or ninthgrade era of your life, when you are kind of transitioning from being your mother’s kid to this guy that’s going to have your own identity and your friend group. You are getting a little more independence.

And then you start asking yourself about a bunch of questions – if I were in this prison and I didn’t have my legs, how could I feel safe?

What would I do? How would I try to keep myself occupied if suddenly I can’t use one half of my body? Oh, my brain might kick in a little bit more and I might start really contemplating things in a much deeper way and I’d kind of stay away from people because I feel really vulnerable. And so I think lots of people think those things and feel those things and I think that’s what makes shows like “From” or “Lost,” any of those things, kind of exciting. You can kind of put yourself in this situation.

Q: Do you have to decompress from the character after filming for the season ends?

A: I’d love to say that I can fully decompress at the end of the season, but I sort of get a plane ride home and then my kids are there. And so a whole new sort of stress kicks in (laughs) so there’s no real decompression. They’re like, “You’ve been gone for months. Get in here. Let’s get to work.” So I get a little decompression and then I get home and I do my real job.

Q: There is a scene with Sam and Joel a hardware store in the second episode that sounded very improvised. Was it?

A: There’s room for improv. That’s actually the very first scene that we shot coming back to Season 2, so we kind of stuck to the script at first and then at the end fooled around a little bit. But the joy of writing the second season is that you kind of have a better handle on how people speak but then we have freedom to move around within that.

Q: How is it doing those types of scenes with the actor who plays Joel, Jeff Hiller?

A: Well, Jeff is an angel (laughs). He’s like a real-life, in-the-flesh angel so it’s always a pleasure. But honestly, we hadn’t shot in a year. I hadn’t really worked since we wrapped the first season. So we were sitting and I was like, “Well, I’m just gonna talk to Jeff like I would talk to Jeff and hopefully the magic will come back.” But I think it did. It felt very easy. I just think we sort of fit together like a hand in a glove and it’s like a nice, comfortable ride in the countryside.

Q: How has the show been received by the real residents of Manhattan, Kan.?

A: They’ve really embraced it. It’s so cool. You know, I was home last spring and they did a Bridget Everett Day and so I got to see a lot of old and new faces down in City Park and at Varsity Donuts, which we feature in the show, and see local businesspeople and students and some of the queer community and talk to people and see how the show’s affected them. And it was really special and I’m so happy that people can see themselves in the show.

hosts MTV Movie & TV Awards

Drew Barrymore is planted firmly in both worlds the event encompasses, so she’s a solid choice to host the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

“Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery” (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries — TV movie premiere, May 21)

A skeleton is discovered amid the rubble of a building, revealing that one of Lake Eden’s citizens was not who he claimed to be. Much to the shagrin of her fiancé, Det. Mike Kingston (Cameron Mathison), Hannah (Alison Sweeney) begins to investigate on her own. As she pieces together the events that led to the murder, she even calls on her mother Delores (Barbara Niven), as she works to bring the killer to justice in this 2023 mystery.

“Happy Valley” (BBC America — season premiere, May 22)

Catherine (Sarah Lancashire) discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, sparking a chain of events that unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) in the Season 3 premiere. Meanwhile, her grandson, Ryan (Rhys Connah), is now 16 and still living with Catherine, but he has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father.

The ceremony will be shown on the cable channel Sunday, May 7, as it originates from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Viewers now used to the amusing yet sincere persona seen in weekday syndication on “The Drew Barrymore Show” can expect more of it as she introduces various personalities to present honors ranging from the traditional (best movie, best song, etc.) to the more MTV-oriented ... the latter including best fight and best kiss. Barrymore herself is in the running for best host, for her own show.

A member of a family acting dynasty, Barrymore also has her own history as a movie star, dating back to her performance at a very young age in “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” She parlayed her fame from that film into others as she grew up, with a number of them becoming classics in their own rights, such as “The Wedding Singer,” “Ever After” and “Never Been Kissed.” References to her own big-screen resume would seem likely during her MTV stint.

Here’s a look at the nominees in several categories in the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Best movie: “Avatar: The Way of Water”; “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”; “Elvis”; “Nope”; “Scream VI”; “Smile”; “Top Gun: Maverick”

Best show: “Stranger Things”; “The Last of Us”; “The White Lotus”; “Wednesday”; “Wolf Pack”; “Yellowstone”; “Yellowjackets”

Best performance in a movie: Austin Butler, “Elvis”; Tom Cruise, “Top Gun: Maverick”; Michael B. Jordan, “Creed III”; Keke Palmer, “Nope”; Florence Pugh, “Don’t Worry Darling”
