Jannik Sinner in search of his second career Grand Slam at Roland Garros

The tennis world returns to familiar grounds at Roland Garros in Paris, when the 2024 French Open gets underway Sunday, May 26. The opening rounds air live on NBC.

Ready to serve fans another world-class performance, Italy’s Jannik Sinner has his eyes set on competing for his second career major. In the midst of a season to remember, the 22-year-old is holding a career-high ranking of world No. 2, while also becoming the highest-ranked Italian tennis player to ever hit the courts.

Proving beyond a doubt that he has what it takes to compete with the best of the best, Sinner has already won three titles in 2024 — including his first Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open, his second ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells title and the Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands — entering the month of May with an impressive 28-2 record.

With expectations seemingly growing with each victory, Sinner discussed in an interview with Vogue magazine about dealing with the pressures of moving up in the tennis rankings.

“The pressure, you have to take it in a positive way,” Sinner said. “You have to be kind with the pressure. You have to make friendship. If you hate this pressure, it’s the wrong spot for you, no? The really good and positive thing about tennis is you have this momentum. The momentum can be positive, happy. And can be negative when you lose. But you live in a momentum. In my mind, everything goes quite fast.”

Monster at large: Real fears come to life in ‘Eric’

Some know him as Sherlock Holmes, others know him as Doctor Stephen Strange, and based on the title of his next project, a fair few might assume that Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game,” 2014) now also stars as “Eric” — but it is far more complicated than that.

In “Eric,” Netflix’s new limited series, premiering Thursday, May 30, on the streamer, two-time Oscar nominee Cumberbatch stars as Vincent Anderson, a wellknown puppeteer on the fictional children’s TV show “Good Day Sunshine.” Also a devoted father, Vincent uses one of his son’s creations — a monster named Eric — as his inspiration in a tireless crusade for justice.

As described by Netflix on its press website Tudum, “Eric” is a fantastical story rooted in very real terror. When Vincent’s nineyear-old son, Edgar (new talent Ivan Howe), goes missing while on his way to school one day, the puppeteer’s entire life is thrown into disrepair. Distressed and blaming himself for the tragic disappearance, Vincent finds hope in a drawing Edgar had once created of a large blue monster named Eric, who supposedly lives under Edgar’s bed. So lost in his grief and helplessness, it isn’t long before Vincent comes up with a plan: “If he can get Eric on TV, then Edgar will come home” (per Netflix).

And so begins Vincent’s obsessive tether to Eric.

“As Vincent’s progressively destructive behavior alienates his family, his work colleagues and the detectives trying to help him,” reads an article on Tudum, “it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.”

Highlighting a terrifying time in New York City’s history, “Eric” is set when the AIDS epidemic was reaching its peak, crime was still on the rise following a string of serial killers in the city during the 1970s and the disappearance of six-year-old Etan Patz helped spawn the “Stranger Danger” movement many still reference today.

Although it has not explicitly been stated that the events in “Eric” are based on Patz’s real-life case, there certainly are similarities. Patz, a six-year-old New Yorker, disappeared on the way to his SoHo neighborhood bus stop in 1979, never to be seen or heard from again. Despite this hardly being the first child abduction in the city, Patz’s vanishing worked as a catalyst for change, prompting discussions around citywide safety and ushering in new laws aimed at protecting the city’s youth from dangerous offenders.

As Patz was one of the first missing children to appear on a milk carton, his case saw national attention and remained in the public eye until its resolution nearly four decades later when, in 2017, former convenience store clerk Pedro Hernandez was convicted of murdering the child. Patz and other young victims like him are remembered each May 25 (the date Patz went missing) since 1983, when then-President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the day National Missing Children’s Day.

“Eric,” meanwhile, gives viewers an inside look at the trauma, grief and layers of hardship caused by such a tragic event.

It’s been one wild ride for Cordell Walker (Jared Padalecki), but with more leads to follow and his investigation finally narrowing in, Walker is closer to having answers than ever before. As the past becomes clearer, the future begins to unfog for everyone, from August (Kale Culley) and Stella (Violet Brinson) to matriarch Abeline Walker (Molly Hagan). Q: With “Young Sheldon” over, what will Iain Armitage do next?

A: The young actor – who turns 16 in July, and has posted on social media that he’ll be getting his pilot’s license – didn’t have definite professional plans at the time this was written, though having had a weekly series commitment for the past seven years (minus last year’s actors’ strike), we suspect that something of a more regular school schedule might be in his immediate future. Of course, there was tutoring on the set of his just-ended CBS series, but it’s not the same goingto-class situation that most youngsters experience.

Armitage has built such an identity with viewers as the youthful incarnation of brainy Sheldon Cooper, also of “The Big Bang Theory” fame, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of role he tackles next and how soon.

When identification with one character is that strong, the given performer sometimes waits a while before trying something else, so the audience has a chance to recalibrate and accept the actor as someone else.

Still, Armitage came into “Young Sheldon” already having notable acting experience. He had such television credits as HBO’s “Big Little Lies” (as the Shailene Woodley character’s son) and NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Additionally, Armitage worked on such films as “Scoob!” (as the voice of the young Shaggy, of the “Scooby-Doo” franchise) and “PAW Patrol: The Movie,” as well as “The Glass Castle” and “Our Souls at Night.” Armitage – who speaks Russian fluently, possibly opening him up to roles of that nationality – is the grandson of Richard Armitage, who served as a deputy secretary of state in the administration of President George W. Bush.

From filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, this follow-up docuseries, looking at the crimes of New York City real estate heir Robert Durst, comes to a close. It features new interviews, new materials and more calls from Durst following his conviction of murder.

Q: I’ve seen Dule Hill around, but what has James Roday done since “Psych”? I thought we’d see more of him.

A: James Roday Rodriguez has been around if you knew where to look. Mostly, you should have been looking in the ensemble cast of ABC’s “A Million Little Things.” Rodriguez switched to indie films for a few years after the end of “Psych” in 2014, such as “Baby, Baby, Baby” (2015) and “Pushing Dead” (2016). On the side, he also tried his hand at directing, helming episodes of shows including “Battle Creek,” “Rosewood” and others. He combined the two pursuits with “Gravy,” the 2015 horror-comedy film he directed, wrote and appeared in (along with his old “Psych” partner, Dulé Hill).

In 2018 he made his return to full-time series TV with “A Million Little Things,” ABC’s life-affirming dramedy that follows a group of friends who resolve to live better lives after one of their close-knit group dies unexpectedly. It ended in 2023 after its fifth season.

And, Rodriguez has already found his next project: he’s returning to feature-length indies with a role in “American Dog,” currently in pre-production with no release date announced. He’s also been rumored to be involved in a couple of others.

Of course, the big hope for many is that he’s not done with “Psych.” The show ended in 2014, but it was revived three times over in made-for-TV movies, first on USA Network and later on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock. But, there’s no word on a fourth so far.

It takes talent: Crews calls the shots in Season 19 of ‘AGT’

Any age. Any talent. Any dream. Crowned “America’s most popular talent competition,” the jaw-dropping series “America’s Got Talent” returns for its 19th season, premiering Tuesday, May 28, on NBC.

Fans will be excited to see that the “Core Four” — Howie Mandel (“Deal or No Deal”), Simon Cowell (“The X Factor UK”), Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”) and Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”) — are all returning to preside over this season’s contestants, and that the ever-cheerful Terry Crews (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) has returned to take his place as host at the show’s helm, steering the talent-heavy ship forward.

There’s plenty of talent aboard, too, as new singers, dancers, acrobats, impressionists, magicians and otherwise talented Americans take to the “AGT” stage, all performing in front of a live audience for their shot at performing in the live episodes later on and earning an opportunity to reach the $1 million prize at the end of it all.

Before they can win, however — and before they can even start the competition — all hopeful competitors must take part in

the audition rounds, which will air between May and mid-August.

While speaking with People magazine, Cowell made note of one exciting change to this year’s audition round, stating that he, Klum, Vergara and Mandel (the judges) have each been given two Golden Buzzers in the upcoming season. The Golden Buzzers, for those who don’t remember, act as an “opposite veto” of sorts, sending an act right to the live shows — without requiring a majority vote from the panel — when pushed. In previous seasons, each judge only received one.

Adding another fun twist to this season, however, will be one additional Golden Buzzer, this time placed in the hands of host Terry Crews, who will experience voting power like never before.
