Going into the 2023 French Open, it’s clear that 21-year-old Iga Swiatek has taken the tennis world by storm, rewriting history and quickly establishing herself as a fan favorite.

Born May 31, 2001, in Warsaw, Poland, Swiatek’s first taste of Grand Slam success came in October 2020 when she won the prestigious French Open title. It wasn’t just the victory that was impressive — it was how she did it, and whom she did it against.

Entering the tournament, Swiatek was ranked No. 54. Using her aggressive style and fearless approach, she defeated world No. 19 Marketa Vondrousova in the opening round, and followed it up in the fourth round by defeating world No. 2 Simona Halep, who was on a 17-match winning streak and was favored to win the tournament. Reaching the final, Swiatek defeated No. 6 Sofia Kenin, becoming the first Polish player, male or female, to win a Grand Slam singles title, and the lowest-ranked singles champion in French Open history.

Coming off a successful 2021 campaign that saw her enter the top 15 for the first time (she finished the season seeded at No. 4), she reached the semifinals at both the 2022 Adelaide International and 2022 Australian Open before winning the next six tournaments in a row. She finished the season with a won-lost record of 67-9, making it the most wins in a single season since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2013.

In 2023, she continues to impress with her outstanding performances on the court. Having established herself as one of the top-ranked female players (and the clay-court queen), she won the WTA Qatar Open 500 in February, successfully defending her title against American Jessica Pegula in the final in straight sets.

With her latest title victory in Stuttgart coming on the heels of No. 2 Arnya Sabalenka, Swiatek continues to build a legacy that would take a lifetime for most. Beyond the 2023 French Open, now entering its final week (NBC and The Tennis Channel offer live coverage), the future looks bright for this young tennis star.

Space based: Celebrities compete in simulated Mars mission

Ever since Amazon magnate Jeff Bezos’ trip into space last year, there has been plenty of speculation about the rise of space tourism and which celebrities would be among the first to achieve liftoff. Well, for those wondering what it might look like to take things a step further and host a star-studded reality show in space, Fox has got you covered. The new series, “Stars on Mars,” premieres Monday, June 5.

Equal parts Bravo and Star Trek, “Stars on Mars” is hosted by Capt. Kirk himself, William Shatner (“Star Trek: The Original Series”). While not actually filmed in outer space (give that a few more years yet), the unscripted series follows a group of celebrities who must spend an entire summer on a simulated, Mars-like planet together. Constantly assigned tasks by mission control (Shatner, of course), each famous person will need to compete in a series of challenges with the aim of “colonizing” their out-ofthis-world surroundings.

There is a good mix of skills among the 12-person crew, including actors, athletes, public figures and philanthropists. Actors Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”), Tallulah Willis (“The Whole Ten Yards,” 2004) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad,” 2007), for example, will be joined by reality TV stars Porsha Williams Guobadia (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”) and Tom Schwartz (“Vanderpump Rules”), as well as singer/songwriter Tinashe (known for “2 On,” featuring ScHoolboy Q). Meanwhile, rounding out the more athletic side are Tour de France multi-champion Lance Armstrong, UFC champion Ronda Rousey, former Seattle Seahawk Marshawn Lynch, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman and Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon. Comedian Natasha Leggero (“Another Period”) joins from a category of her very own.

In a news release, Fox executives laid out their hopes for the celebs on their “Martian” mission: “During their stay, they will be faced with authentic conditions that simulate life on Mars, and they must use their brains and brawn — or maybe just their stellar social skills — to outlast the competition and claim the title of ‘brightest star in the galaxy.’”

This “analog mission,” as NASA typically refers to these types of simulations, is filmed in the South Australian town of Coober Pedy, a red-sanded desert town nearly 850 kilometres north of Adelaide that is famous for its opals. And while each celebronaut voted “off the planet” during the competition does still need to return to the United States, there remains the small consolation that the flight home isn’t quite as long as that from actual Mars.

Q: With “Ghosts” such a hit now, what are your thoughts about having so much of your series work based in the supernatural?

A: I’m starting to wonder if I’m ever going to get a “regular” job, not playing somebody at least half dead, again. I guess I found my niche. I’m really excited to be in a genre kind of theme, as much as it’s hopefully grounded and is this (premise) that we can all relate to as humans.

One of the things I get most excited about — and I was so fortunate with “iZombie” to have this – is to see people dressing up, getting lost in another world. I think some of the fans in this kind of theme are the most dedicated, creative, imaginable people out there. I feel really lucky that this world would take me back again.

Q: Were you a fan of the genre before you became so involved in it yourself?

A: I grew up in New Zealand, doing bit parts on all the shows that came out (there). We call ourselves the “Sword and Sandals Country”; we have “Hercules,” “Xena,” “The Lord of the Rings.” I think I always grew up with an appreciation that as an actor, you get this chance to go into this other world, whatever that might mean.

As much as I have been able to hopefully play some grounded versions, and some more heightened or stylized things, I kind of feel the best part of the job is being able to get in and dress up and become something that isn’t just you every day … the escapism that comes in a show like this, and the humor. I just feel like something that I want to (watch) at the end of the day is something that makes me laugh and something that kind of is a great escape from whatever the day may have been. The genre stuff has always been fun, but it’s really at its peak right now.

Q: Is Michael Vartan still acting? I’ve kind of lost track of him since “Alias.”

A: His central role as Michael Vaughn on “Alias” certainly led us to believe that Michael Vartan would continue to be a fixture on our TV screens after the ABC spy smash ended in 2006, and he was — just not on shows that were watched.

Actually, that’s slightly unfair. Few of his more recent shows were true flops, they

just suffered from being compared to “Alias,” the sort of landmark show people talked about around the mythical water cooler.

His biggest post-”Alias” role was as part of the ensemble in the TNT medical drama “Hawthorne” alongside Jada Pinkett Smith (“Collateral,” 2004). That show ran for three seasons (2009 to 2011), but never really attained hit status. A few years later,

he was a main support in the E! drama “The Arrangement” (2017 to 2018). His biggest role, however, was probably as a guest — he did a six-episode arc on the second season of the A&E hit “Bates Motel” in 2014.

Between these endeavors, he also dabbled with film, most notably as the love interest in the 2011 action flick “Colombiana.”

Q: I just started rewatching “Schitt’s Creek,” and noticed the name Sarah Levy in the credits. I know that Eugene and Dan Levy are father and son in real life as well as on the show, but who’s Sarah? Is she related?

A: The cute parallel of real father and son Eugene and Dan Levy recreating that relationship as Johnny and David Rose on “Schitt’s Creek” overshadowed this fun fact: Sarah Levy, Eugene’s daughter, is on the show as well, but she’s not playing a relative. Sarah plays diner proprietor Twyla Sands on all six seasons of the surprise-hit sitcom, even though there is a daughter/sister character on the show that would have made more sense as a real-life parallel. And she admits that this was confusing for viewers at first.

“When the show first came out, everyone assumed I was the sister,” Sarah told Hello Magazine. “I love that that wasn’t the case, because it has fully removed me from the hubbub of Daniel and Dad being father and son onscreen. I loved that people didn’t know that I was related in any way, because I was able to do my own thing.”

She also joked in the interview that Annie Murphy, who played the daughter on the show (and who went on to star in the sitcom “Kevin Can F**k Himself”), actually “looks more like a Levy than I do, hands down. She’s got the eyebrows for it.”

Seaside spectacle: HGTV’s ‘Battle on the Beach’ returns

Beach bums be gone, for this summer the sand is set for battle. Season 3 of the competitive renovation show “Battle on the Beach” premieres Sunday, June 4, on HGTV – and this time, the renovators are taking on the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama.

As per previous seasons, three skilled teams of up-and-coming home renovators take on the massive responsibility of updating three beachfront properties top to bottom, gaining help along the way from returning design-experts-slash-hosts Ty Pennington (“Rock the Block”), Alison Victoria (“Windy City Rehab”) and Taniya Nayak (“Build it Forward”), as they tackle big jobs with only a tight, $90,000 budget.

Unlike prior seasons, however, there will be one major difference in Season 3’s competition: the homes will no longer be identical. While all three of the Gulf Shore properties feature two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one is 200 square feet larger than its companions. To decide who gets which unique location, the teams must compete head-to-head in a kickoff challenge that determines their fate in the competition. From there, weekly renovation challenges will take place across the three seaside homes, leading

to a non-stop marathon of reno-jobs, paint swatches and sandy shoes.

This season, the “battle” begins in the kitchen, with dining room makeovers following suit. Following episodes will feature living room, bedroom, bathroom and outdoor makeovers, ending in a complete-home overhaul. At the end of six weeks, judges Bryan and Sarah Baeumler (“Renovation Island”) will join with a team of local real estate experts to determine which home is the most valuable post-renovation. Whichever beachside property proves to have the most successful transformation wins the “Battle on the Beach” and a $50,000 cash prize.
