Piastri still searching for the first Formula One victory of his career

The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix returns for another weekend of high-speed action at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, with practice and qualifiers airing Saturday, June 8, and race day action airing live Sunday, June 9, on ESPN.

With the 2024 Formula One season in full throttle, Oscar Piastri is looking for his first victory of the year, continuing to build off of an impressive rookie campaign with McLaren in 2023.

For McLaren — and, arguably, every team in competition — Red Bull remains the greatest barrier to victory in F1 racing. But McLaren drivers Piastri and Lando Norris have had stellar performances to begin the 2024 season. Norris, who has consistently remained in the top tier since entering F1, secured his first win of the season at the Miami Grand Prix and has earned multiple podium finishes to boot.

For his teammate Piastri, keeping the momentum going after a promising rookie year has also contributed significantly to the team’s overall success, with three fourth-place finishes (as of press time) bringing in some much-needed points.

Going into this year’s Canadian Grand Prix, Piastri holds a top-10 position in the standings while trailing his teammate Norris, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and F1 2023 world champion Max Verstappen, who continues his dominance in 2024.

‘The Boys’ are back: Brand new season of anti-superhero series begins

Humanity is being goaded into tearing itself apart in a brand new season of “The Boys.” The first three episodes of the ultra-violent, anti-superhero series premiere on Prime Video Thursday, June 13. New episodes drop weekly on Thursdays.

Last season, “The Boys” thoroughly explored how and why superheroes (or “supes” as they’re called in the series) serving as military weapons is a recipe for disaster, before hinting at the political storylines that dominate this upcoming season.

Victoria Neuman, portrayed by Claudia Doumit (“Timeless”), was revealed to be a secret supe who has been using her powers to eliminate obstacles in her way as a congresswoman. This season, Victoria tries to step into the Oval Office while doing the bidding of an unrestricted, power-hungry supe.

Antony Starr (“American Gothic”) is Homelander, who has become an unstoppable force after learning last season that he can maintain a loyal following no matter what awful things he does in plain view of everyone. Together, Homelander and

Victoria stoke division and erode America’s democracy for their own gains.

Returning this season are Karl Urban (“Thor: Ragnarok,” 2017) as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid (“Oppenheimer,” 2023) as Hughie Campbell, Erin Moriarty (“Jessica Jones”) as Annie January/Starlight, Jessie T. Usher (“Smile,” 2022) as Reggie Franklin/ATrain, Laz Alonso (“L.A.’s Finest”) as Marvin T. New additions to the cast are Susan Heyward (“Hello Tomorrow!”) as Sister Sage, Valorie Curry (“The Lost Symbol”) as Firecracker and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Walking Dead”) in an as-yet-unnamed role. Morgan is no newcomer to the antihero scene, he starred as the Comedian in 2009’s “Watchmen” big screen adaptation.

In an official trailer for the new season, Morgan’s character embraces Butcher and joins him for a drink with the two of them looking like old friends. Terminally ill after using too much of an experimental drug that temporarily boosted powers in the final showdown last season, Butcher is also on the outs with the rest of The Boys who have had it with his manipulations. The only way to keep Homelander and Victoria from destroying humanity is to get the band back together and take them on.

“The Boys” is an adaptation of the popular comic book series of the same name by Gareth Ennis and Darick Robertson, published from 2006-2012. Ennis’ earlier work “Preacher” was also recently adapted into a four-season TV series on AMC, airing its final episode in 2019.

Q: I enjoyed seeing Josh Brolin host “Saturday Night Live” recently. Has he ever had a TV series of his own?

A: That March appearance – which was meant to promote his presence in the movie “Dune: Part Two” – actually was the third time that James Brolin’s fellow-actor son hosted the NBC late-night staple. Having the popular Ariana Grande as the episode’s musical guest surely was a boost in terms of viewership.

Though Brolin’s work principally has been in feature films, he was a television-series regular in several instances early in his career. Not long after he made his movie debut in the enduringly popular “The Goonies” in 1985, he co-starred in the short-lived NBC drama “Private Eye” (1987-88). He then had a longer run as the young Wild Bill Hickok in the ABC Western “The Young Riders,” which lasted three seasons (1989-92) and currently can be found in the On Demand lineup for the MGM+ cable channel.

Brolin’s next series was “Winnetka Road,” a 1994 interpersonal NBC drama that lasted only five episodes (a sixth was produced but never aired). He would return yet again to NBC briefly in 2003 in the title role of “Mister Sterling,” a drama about a U.S. senator that was created by Lawrence O’Donnell, the MSNBC personality who then used his personal experience from working for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Lately, Brolin – who also narrated the 2012 documentary series “Mankind: The Story of All of Us” – has starred in “Outer Range,” a combination of science-fiction and Western that currently is in its second season on Prime Video. Imogen Poots and Lili Taylor are among his fellow cast regulars.

Q: What’s Danny McBride doing now?

I feel like I haven’t seen him much since “Eastbound & Down” ended.

A: You just haven’t been looking in the right places — and you haven’t been watching “The Righteous Gemstones.”

HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones” stars McBride as part of a family of world-famous televangelists. It’s been taking up a lot of his time since it debuted in 2019 — he also serves as a writer, executive producer and occasional director.

Those who know McBride for his motor-mouthed, larger-than-life com-

edy persona might be surprised to know he also has a pretty busy sideline as a horror movie writer, alongside his old film school buddy David Gordon Green (“Halloween,” 2018). Together, they wrote the scripts for last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer” and Green’s modern trilogy of Halloween movies (in 2018, 2021 and 2022).

All this means McBride may have seemed a little less unavoidable lately — certainly less than when he exploded onto the comedy scene in the late ‘00s.

For a while, it seemed like every slightly juvenile, male-centric comedy film featured

McBride in some way — including hits such as “Tropic Thunder” and “Pineapple Express” (both 2008) and “This Is the End” (2013). His distinctive, gravelly voice also showed up in numerous, more family-friendly animated hits, including “Despicable Me” (2010) and “Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011).

But for many, he will always be Kenny Powers of HBO’s “Eastbound & Down,” a washed-up baseball player who returns to his hometown to teach gym class. He also co-wrote and produced this one, which ran for four beloved seasons from 2009 to 2013.

Q: It just came to my attention that “Jersey Shore” is still on. How is it possible that a reality show has been going for this long with the same people?

A: To be fair to the show and its cast, they’ve evolved quite a bit.

For starters, they’re no longer just going to a house in coastal New Jersey to party (and also squabble) for a few weeks every year. And they also aren’t doing it alone.

The pioneering MTV reality show has featured the same core cast since it launched in 2009 — Mike Sorrentino, Nicole Polizzi, Paul DelVecchio, Sammi Giancola, Vinny Guadagnino, Jenni Farley, Ronnie Magro, Angelina Pivarnick and Deena Cortese. But now many of them are married and have kids, and they often bring their families along to be on the show.

It’s still party-based, but they now travel to different destinations together each season — the show’s been rebranded “Jersey Shore: Family Vacation” to reflect both this traveling aspect and the fact that things will only get so wild with kids around.

We also get a (slightly) better sense of the stars’ lives outside the show now, and often the locations are dictated by these elements. For example, in the most recent season (Season 7 under the “Family Vacation” brand) the gang goes to Nashville, partly so that Polizzi (better known as Snooki) can expand her retail brand there.

So the broader answer to your question of how it’s still going is this: MTV has narrowed down the show’s true appeal. All anyone wants is to watch this group of overdramatic urbanites spend time together, regardless of where or why. That

could run forever.

‘Love Island’ returns: ‘Kens’ and ‘Barbies’ head to all-new villa

for Season 6

Beloved “Vanderpump Rules” regular Ariana Madix shines as she takes on a new role, leading as the brand-new host of “Love Island USA,” kicking off its sixth season this Tuesday, June 11, with episodes streaming exclusively on Peacock.

Madix — who joins comedian Iain Stirling, the franchise’s iconic narrator — is no stranger to reality television, even making a “Love Island USA” cameo last season, but the “Vanderpump” regular is now ready to visit the islands of Fiji long-term, as she hosts this season’s eager singles.

Ahead of the season’s debut, Peacock shared a brief description of what’s to come — including the introduction of a brand-new “vibrant” villa and an unforgettable Hideaway. They say: “Islanders will face more drama than ever before with jaw-dropping revelations, brand-new couples challenges and even a few surprise guests.

“Along the way” Peacock continues, “viewers will be able to vote for their favorite couples via the Love Island USA app to determine which islanders remain in the villa and who goes home heartbroken and empty-handed.”

In a brief teaser trailer shared for Season 6, Madix is seen leaving the bright lights of “La La Land” and traveling to the island, with the teaser giving multiple nods to last summer’s film sensation, “Barbie” (2023). Upon arrival, Madix — dressed head to toe in hot pink — looks at the camera, winks, and asks, “Who’s ready to couple up?”

The fun and fanciful theme has left some to wonder if the villa will be overrun by Kens and turned full “Mojo Dojo Casa House” or if this season’s Barbies will run the game.
