Age is just a number for Goldschmidt

Only a few names resonate with consistency and grit, but at the age of 35, Paul Goldschmidt has some doubters questioning whether his best days are behind him. Currently, the St. Louis Cardinals hold a 25-35 won-lost record with a 1418 record on the road. Despite the less-than-ideal start to the season, the Cardinals are third in total home runs with 80 on the year — 10 of those coming from Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt was traded to the Cardinals back in 2019 after a successful stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks, helping kickstart his career. Since his arrival in St. Louis, he’s been a vital part of the team by adding more all-star and Silver Slugger awards to his resume. At this point in his career, Goldschmidt is well known for his power at the plate and defensive awareness, establishing himself as one of the most consistent offensive and defensive threats in Major League Baseball.

While the team struggles to establish a winning record, it doesn’t seem to have bothered the first baseman. Goldschmidt currently ranks 18th in batting average. His on-base percentage ranks ninth and he’s 19th in the league in slugging (.615 in his last 10 games).

Final assignment: ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ starts his last Prime Video mission

Jack Ryan has had several screen lives, via a variety of actors, and his latest one is about to begin its final round.

John Krasinski returns as the CIA analyst who typically finds himself in the thick of action as the fourth and final season of the Prime Video adventure-drama “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” premieres Friday, June 30. Arriving six months after Season 3 began –an unusually short span between seasons for a streaming series – the program will debut two of its six new episodes each Friday, and the concluding story tests Ryan in terms of enemies both foreign and domestic.

Now the acting deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Ryan is concerned with the behavior of his own operatives as he starts a probe of possible corruption. Before long, though, he discovers several black ops situations that might make America vulnerable to plots from overseas … with the union of a drug cartel and a terrorist group potentially spelling very bad things for the United States, and challenging Ryan’s strongly held beliefs in right, wrong and justice.

Krasinski also is among the executive producers of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,”

on which novelist Clancy is given the same credit posthumously. Other returning cast members include Wendell Pierce – a Tony Award nominee this year for “Death of a Salesman” – as Ryan’s former supervisor James Greer, and Abbie Cornish in a reprise of her Season 1 role as Ryan’s girlfriend (and, per the Clancy books, eventual wife) Dr. Cathy Mueller. The new season also features Michael Pena as Domingo Chavez, the protagonist of an intended spinoff series. As mentioned, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” is the latest iteration of a franchise that dates back to 1987 in print (“Patriot Games” was the first novel) and to 1990 on film. “The Hunt for Red October” was the initial Ryan movie, and though he certainly was a major character as played by Alec Baldwin, top billing went to the star who played the character Ryan was investigating: Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius.

The film was an enormous hit for its time, making more than $200 million worldwide, and one only can speculate whether the result would have been the same if the originally intended casting (Kevin Costner as Ryan, Klaus Maria Brandauer as Ramius) had stuck. The outcome virtually demanded a follow-up, and that arrived in 1992 with the screen version of “Patriot Games,” but with a significant change in the actor playing Ryan.

Stories differ as to why Baldwin didn’t return, mostly related to the timing of his commitment to a Broadway revival of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” but Harrison Ford got the part next … and not just for one film, but for two. Harrison Ford, who had built a reputation for brainy action tales, was enlisted to assume the part; that turned out to be a good move, since the picture grossed slightly under $180 million internationally in its original theatrical run.

Q: What attracted you to “How I Met Your Father”?

A: I’m extremely lucky to have gotten the opportunity to play Sophie. I am so attracted to parts that are extremely relatable, and this one happens to touch on just trying to find love in this world that we live in with all the options that there are, and how hard it is to meet someone face-toface. And the fact that she has this lovely friend circle that, kind of, comes together in a strange way, it was all just really attractive to me.

Q: What do you feel that you have in common with Sophie?

A: Even though I’m in a totally different place in my life, I just felt like I was drawn to Sophie. She doesn’t give up. She’s kind of struggling. The odds are kind of against her in her career, but she’s leaning on this little pack of weirdos that she finds one night. And they run off into the sunset together and have all of these experiences that young people have, just trying to find their footing. It was just a great script.

Q: What do you think about the show being careful to stay separate from the earlier “How I Met Your Mother” while also paying homage to it?

A: I think it’s important to know that we are our own show. The original show was so amazing, and (the cast members) were so tied into one another and just did such an amazing job, but this is its own show.

We clicked pretty fast. We were like, “Huh, we have a show. We did it. We look like we are best friends. We like each other.” It kind of all fell into place, and we just hope that that magic comes across when other people watch it, because we are like, “We think we did a good job.”

Q: What’s Joel McHale doing now? I haven’t seen him in anything since “Community.”

A: The short answer is that he’s been having fun while he looks for his next “Community.” And there’s a chance he’s found it.

Joel McHale is still best known as the superficially charming, fast-talking Jeff Winger on the cult-favourite 2010s sitcom “Community.”

He has a healthy sideline as a comedy talk-show host, thanks largely to his lengthy run as host of E!’s “The Soup” from 2004 to 2015. But that gig ended in 2015, the same year as “Community.”

So far none of his lead or hosting roles have lasted. For example, he had a sitcom in 2016-17 called “The Great Indoors” and a talk show called “The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale” in 2018, but both were cancelled after a season.

But he’s broken the one-season curse with two new shows at the same time: his new sitcom, “Animal Control,” which was recently renewed for a second season on Fox, and the baking-competition show he hosts, “Crime Scene Kitchen,” which debuted its second season

earlier this month.

Getting a renewal for “Animal Control” is kind of a big deal. Fox largely chose to step away from scripted shows its upcoming 2023-24 season, which had to build in the midst of the writers’ strike. Renewing “Animal Control” is a big commitment to staying in the Joel McHale business.

The love that people still have for “Community” has also continued paying off for McHale. For example, when all production was shut down during the pandemic, he and fellow “Community” alum Ken Jeong did a podcast together, virtually, where they just chatted and answered fan questions about the show. And he appeared on an episode of Jeong’s own sitcom, “Dr. Ken,” in 2016.

Since the show ended in 2011, he’s struggled to find anything nearly as big — which is already known to be a tall task. Stars from Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns,” 2006) to Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel,” 2013) to Christopher Reeve (1978’s “Superman”) have struggled to build careers post-Superman.

Welling’s biggest role since has been a full-season arc on Fox’s “Lucifer” in 2017-18.

He also starred in the short-lived international action series “Professionals,” opposite Brendan Fraser (“The Mummy,” 1999), who was going through his own career downturn at the time.

However, Welling might not actually be done with the Superman role after all. He reprised it once already, in a 2019 episode of “Batwoman,” one of the other CW shows in the DC Comics universe.

Now he and “Smallville” co-star Michael Rosenbaum (who played his archenemy, Lex Luthor) are reportedly going around Hollywood pitching an animated “Smallville” reboot. The hook is that they would reprise their roles as voice actors, and Welling told a fan expo last year that most of the other actors are interested in reprising their roles as well.

Flower power: Charity Lawson returns to find

love

in ‘The Bachelorette’

After a devastating and emotional letdown during the Season 27 “hometown” episode of “The Bachelor,” Charity Lawson left (the season’s Bachelor) Zach Shallcross and returned home single, worried she may never find her match. But “Bachelor Nation” has spoken, and now the roses are in Lawson’s hand, as she returns to impress as the star single in the landmark 20th season of “The Bachelorette,” premiering Monday, June 26, on ABC.

Lawson – now 27 and who works as a child and family therapist from Columbus, Georgia – won over the nation with “confidence, compassion for helping others and [a] magnetic smile,” according to ABC. She solidified her “genuine desire to find love by taking risks and supporting those around her,” generating a fan base that propelled the travel-loving therapist into the spotlight.

“I’ve waited forever to find the love of my life. ... It blows my mind that I could meet my person and be engaged and literally have my happily ever after,” Lawson said in a recent interview with People magazine. While it’s not guaranteed, the chances are higher than ever for Lawson to succeed in finding her fairytale dreams come true, as 25 of the

country’s finest young men have lined up to vie for one of Lawson’s roses.

Hailing from every possible profession — from firefighter to wrestler, underwater welder to yacht captain — these hopeful bachelors will need more than an exciting career to win Lawson’s heart. According to ABC, Lawson is looking for “a life partner who loves dogs, thrifting and a good tailgate, but, above all else, someone who is honest, empathetic and values her for who she is.” With parents that have been married for 47 years, these potential matches have a lot to live up to, as “Lawson has been instilled with the confidence of knowing what she deserves and is eager to find a lasting love matching their example” (ABC).
