MLB’s first two-way allstar is still making waves

It’s that time of year again, as the Seattle Mariners prepare to host the 2023 MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday, July 11.

Excitement is building for this year’s Midsummer Classic, which continues the long-standing tradition (since 1933) of showcasing baseball’s finest talent and celebrating the game fans love. While fans voted to send their favorites to the game, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels was busy generating headlines with his impressive offensive play.

Ohtani, who moved from Japan to the big leagues in 2018, appears to be on pace to match his 2021 MVP season when the pitcher/designated hitter became the first all-star in MLB history to be chosen as a two-way player.

With free agency looming, Ohtani is arguably playing the best baseball of his career. In a four-game stint against the Texas Rangers earlier this season, the former AL rookie of the year hit four home runs in the series, and in the final game, he struck out three Rangers.

Last year, Ohtani became the first player to finish among MLB’s top 15 in both home runs and pitching strikeouts since the pitching mound was relocated in 1893. If Ohtani manages to eclipse his 2021 MVP season, it will be hard to deny another MVP run at the plate.

If not for the talents of Aaron Judge hitting 62 home runs in the 2022 season, Ohtani would potentially be chasing his third straight AL MVP award right now. He remains one of MLB’s toughest pitchers (with an AL-low batting average against of .178 as of June 20) and was the first player in the AL to hit 20 homers (as of June 20 he had 24).

Off to a historic start, look for Ohtani to continue to put on a show for the fans, as the 2023 MLB season reaches the (symbolic) halfway mark with this year’s MLB All-Star Game, set for Tuesday, July 11. Fans can catch all the action live on Fox and Fox Deportes.

Play on: Game time continues on ABC as two favorites return

Let the games begin … again.

ABC has gone very heavy on primetime contests in recent summers, many of them updates of shows that were popular in earlier incarnations. Already, such series as “Press Your Luck,” “The Chase,” “Generation Gap” and “Claim to Fame” have made their returns for these warm-weather months.

That parade of participants and prizes continues as “Celebrity Family Feud” and “The $100,000 Pyramid” begin new rounds on ABC Sunday, July 9. Host Steve Harvey starts his tenth season of pitting teams of stars and their relatives or work colleagues against each other on “Celebrity Family Feud,” while Michael Strahan presides over Season 7 of the latest “Pyramid” incarnation, in which personalities and their teammates use words and phrases to guess categories (or vice versa) to get to the winner’s circle and a shot or two at big money.

Early Season 10 players on “Celebrity Family Feud” include Gayle King (“CBS Mornings”), Sophia Bush Hughes (“One Tree Hill”) and cast members of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.” Season 9 saw contests between the casts of “Abbott Elementary” and “Hacks,” stars of “Bel-Air” and the revival of “Saved by the Bell,” Kristin Chenoweth (“Schmigadoon!”) and Kathy Najimy (“Ho-

cus Pocus,” 1993), and Kal Penn (“Designated Survivor”) and Erika Christensen (before she returned to ABC full-time as a star of the series “Will Trent”). Music’s Boyz II Men and the hosts of CBS’ daytime show “The Talk” also got chances for “Feud”-ing last season.

“Celebrity Family Feud” was tried earlier, with “Today’s” Al Roker guiding it during a brief NBC run in the summer of 2008. ABC actually was the home network of the original “Family Feud” when Richard Dawson hosted it from 1976 to 1985, with several others filling that role since its current syndication run began in 1999. Harvey became the host in 2010, and its rise in ratings not only have kept him there since, it paved the way for another run at the “Celebrity” spinoff.

Though Harvey has done other programs including the talk show “Steve” and ABC’s current “Judge Steve Harvey” – plus his sitcom “The Steve Harvey Show,” he has enjoyed particular success with “Celebrity Family Feud” and its syndicated weekday parent “Family Feud,” of which he became the host in 2010. He expresses gratitude for his television career overall, which took him out of the realm of stand-up comedy and has brought him a wide and steady audience.

“It turned out to be the best thing that happened to me,” Harvey reflects. “If I had tried to continue as a stand-up, there’s no way I could maintain the TV career because of the political correctness that has killed comedy. Every joke you tell now, it hurts somebody’s feelings.

What people don’t understand about comedians is that the joke has got to be about something. It has to be about somebody. We can’t write jokes about puppies all the time. Some of these jokes are going to have to be about people.”

Q: How did you feel about the way that the firefighters you supervise dealt with having cameras around them constantly during the filming of “LA Fire & Rescue”?

A: I was very proud of all of them. It’s not an easy thing to do, to invite somebody into your home like that and agree to be filmed every moment of every day. And not only in our “home,” but also on our emergency responses and medical calls. They’re filming every step we’re taking, so we’ve got to be on our game 100 percent of the time. Otherwise, you’re going to look silly. That level of pressure, on top of an already pressure-filled situation, can be stressful … and everybody handled it professionally.

Q: Are you glad to have other California firehouses besides the one you were with at the time (Palmdale) showcased by the series?

A: Absolutely. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is unique in its ability to offer so many different experiences to firefighters. It’s one of the only departments where you can fight a wildfire, work on a boat, work on a helicopter, work in a high-rise — it’s got everything to offer to a fireman, and not many departments are able to do that. The producers of the series were able to capture a lot of the differences and uniqueness.

Q: Though you worked in the world of finance previously, you come from a family of firefighters, since that also has been the profession of your twin brother and your father (both named Steve). Does that give you special pride in doing your job?

A: It’s an honor to be able to serve, and we’re just trying to make everybody proud.

Q: I thought the woman who played the female cash-truck driver in “Wrath of Man” did a great job, especially since she had the only female action role. What has she done since then?

A: Guy Ritchie movies aren’t generally equal-opportunity affairs. They’re usually about men beating up and then robbing other men, who then often rob them back. Women don’t often get involved. But you’re also right that Niahm Algar made a solid case for changing that in 2021’s “Wrath of Man,” Ritchie’s first team-up with his old muse, Jason Statham (“Fast X,” 2023), since they did “Revolver” together in 2005.

OF THE WONDER ON NETFLIX

Algar played, as you say, just one of the team of armoured-truck drivers in the movie, but her character got more development than most of the others, and she got some good action scenes in as well.

She’s appeared in quite a number of things since and, together, they show off quite a range.

Most impressively, she launched her very own medical drama series this year in the U.K. “Malpractice” has only aired one season so far, but another is reportedly in the works. Sadly, this one hasn’t found a North American distributor yet, but we can hope.

She also appeared in another U.K. series, “Suspect,” last year, but it, too, isn’t available over here.

You can, however, catch her in the suspenseful 19th-century costume drama “The Wonder, which came out last year, set in her native Ireland and available on Netflix. And you can see her in the Max (it was HBO Max at the time) sci-fi series “Raised by Wolves,” in which she was already starring when she appeared in “Wrath of Man,” but which released a second season afterward.

Now Algar has two more TV series in the works, and it looks like they’ll be easy to find. She’ll be in the Disney+ crime comedy “Culprits,” slated for later this year, and another period drama, “Mary & George,” on AMC+.

Just a few weeks ago, he started filming “Not Without Hope,” about a group of friends trying to survive after being stranded at sea in the Gulf of Mexico. He is, of course, also producing this one. That means that, though it just started filming, he’s already been working on it for a while.

Indeed, he’s probably been tinkering with it since his last movie, “Copshop,” was released in 2021.

That one was a typical Carnahan bullet-laden action spectacle. So unless the stranded friends in “Not Without Hope” all held on to firearms when their fishing boat capsized, this one will be a bit of a departure for him.

That’s not to say Carnahan’s incapable of doing anything else. Indeed, this new film sounds a bit like his 2011 hit “The Grey,” about plane crash survivors in Alaska who are being stalked by a pack of wolves.

But it looks like you’ll have to be patient if you want to see the end result. As it just started filming in May, “Not Without Hope” doesn’t have a release date yet.

City meets country: ‘RHONYC’ alums take on small-town living

“What does anyone know about Benton?” According to “Real Housewives of New York City” alums Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan, not a lot. To them, small-town Benton, Illinois, is a million miles away from the luxurious lives they live on the East Coast. But not for long: these Manhattan-based millionaires are about to get their hands dirty — and learn a whole lot about Benton in the process — when the all-new series “Luann and Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake” premieres, Sunday, July 9, on Bravo.

Together, this “Real Housewives of New York City” duo trade in big-city living for small-town American charm as they venture out to Benton in an effort to share their expertise in revitalizing the nearly 7,000-person town.

The city, once a bustling epicenter in its own right, was devastated by the pandemic, losing residents, businesses and a whole lot of hope along the way. Using their vast string of connections — while also creating some new friendships, alliances and teammates along the way — the duo “use their ingenuity to help

improve the surroundings and rally the town’s spirits,” as Bravo explains. In the process, de Lesseps and Morgan learn plenty about their host town, getting down to the nitty-gritty about everything from debilitatingly hot summer temperatures to Benton’s famous “testicle festival” — a spectacle, to say the least.
