“Futurama” - Season 12 (Hulu — July 29, Season Premiere)

Continuing with its Hulu reboot, this animated series follows Phillip J. Fry (Billy West), a New York City pizza delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000. In this unfamiliar New York City, Fry quickly befriends robot Bender (John DiMaggio) and falls in love with cyclops Leela (Katey Sagal). Finding work at the Planet Express Delivery Company, the trio work together with accountant Hermes Conrad (Phil LaMarr), assistant Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) and alien lobster Dr. John Zoidberg (West) and embark on adventures across the universe.

“Women in Blue (Las Azules)” (Apple TV+ — July 31, Series Premiere)

Set in 1970 and inspired by true events, this series tells the story of four women who defy the ultra-conservative norms of the time and join Mexico’s first female police force, only to discover that their squad is a publicity stunt to distract the media from a brutal serial killer. As the body count grows, Maria (Barbara Mori), Gabina (Amorita Rasgado), Angeles (Ximena Sarinana) and Valentina (Natalia Tellez) set up a secret investigation to achieve what no male officer has been able to do and bring the serial killer to justice.

U.S. women’s soccer looking to win first Olympic gold

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games are underway! As the U.S. women’s soccer team enters Paris, it brings with it high hopes of regaining its position as a top team on the world stage. Its first Group B match kicks off Thursday, July 25, against Zambia at the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice, France, with action airing live on NBC, Peacock and USA Network.

While in somewhat of a transitional period for U.S. women’s soccer, the team has had to

overcome a series of hurdles the past few years — including a heartbreaking loss to Sweden in the opening game of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, before falling to Canada in the semifinals, crushing any further Olympic dreams for the year. The momentum was carried over to an early exit during the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup — being eliminated by Sweden once again — marking the earliest exit for the U.S. women’s team in the tournament.

However, under new coach Emma Hayes, the team has entered a new era with a major focus on mending the gap between the new, talented young players such as Trinity Rodman and experienced veterans like Lindsey Horan, who have both been in top form leading up to Paris.

Summer on the Seine: Boat parade welcomes athletes to Paris 2024

The Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony is causing somewhat of a “Seine” in the news. OK, that was an admittedly ridiculous pun, but the crux of the statement remains true. Airing live from Paris, France, Friday, July 26, on NBC and Peacock, the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are the first iteration of the long-running athletic tradition to host its opening ceremony (and many events) outside of a stadium.

The reason for this decision is not for a lack of stadiums — Paris has several sporting venues, which, like Stade de France, could accommodate large-scale crowds. The organizers preferred to have the ceremony, rather romantically, lit by sunset.

Due to kick off the festivities at 7:30 p.m. CET (10:30 a.m. in Los Angeles, or 1:30 p.m. New York time, for more local reference), the Opening Ceremony sees the 10,500 athletes parade in by way of 94 boats on the Seine, leaving the Pont d’Austerlitz, in the east, and headed to Pont d’Iéna, six kilometers to the west. With one boat to carry all the athletes from each competing country, as well as 80 jumbo screens with speakers and free viewing areas for the public, there is little doubt that the colorful

procession will be the busiest and most beautiful start to any Olympics yet.

According to Olympics.com, “athletes on board the parade boats will get glimpses of some of the official Games venues, including Parc Urbain La Concorde, the Esplanade des Invalides, the Grand Palais, and lastly the Iéna bridge, where the parade will come to a stop before the ceremony’s finale at the Trocadéro.”

Along the parade route, 12 “artistic tableaux” are presented, drawing attention to the capital city’s famous monuments, architecture and history.

“We are delighted to have an opening ceremony that illustrates the meeting between sport and the city in the most beautiful way,” said Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee. “With the natural light of the setting sun, the event will be even more sublime, with a truly poetic dimension, inviting both athletes and the public to appreciate the natural beauty of the City of Light.”

While the list of Opening Ceremony performers is still a secret (as of writing), the Games’ official website does promise “a unique multi-sensory spectacle ... [that] take[s] sport out of the stadiums and open[s] up the Games.”

As for NBC’s coverage of the event, “Sunday Night Football” host Mike Tirico covers his fourth Olympic Opening Ceremony, this time alongside NFL Hall-ofFamer Peyton Manning (“Peyton’s Places”) and the first-ever “American Idol,” Kelly Clarkson. NBC morning favorites Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb will also host a special edition of “Today” from a bridge over the Seine.

Rapper/entrepreneur Snoop Dogg also has plans to report for NBC from various live evening events over the Games’ 16-day run.

After being diagnosed with a rapidly evolving form of dementia, contract killer John Knox (Michael Keaton) finds the chance to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged son (James Marsden) before it’s too late for them both. As his mind continues to slip away, Knox utilizes his assassin instincts to seek revenge against the foes attacking his family, cementing their bond once and for all. Directed by Keaton himself, 2023’s “Knox Goes Away” airs Saturday, July 27, on HBO, with an official trailer found at youtube.com/watch?v=bZ8SeYVnc9A

Reba McEntire OF HAPPY’S PLACE ON

Q: I’ve seen ads for Reba McEntire’s new show coming this fall. When was her first series originally on the air?

A: Soon to return in the sitcom “Happy’s Place” on NBC, the country-music icon has had a place in series television for quite a while, and that started with the 2001 premiere of “Reba” on the then-WB Network. It lasted a total of six seasons (2001-07), the final one airing on The CW, which resulted from the merging of The WB and the former UPN network. Still seen weekdays in repeats on both Hallmark Channel and UPtv, the show also featured Melissa Peterman, who will reunite with McEntire as a co-star of “Happy’s Place.”

McEntire returned to series work in 2012 by starring in ABC’s “Malibu Country,” which had a somewhat similar premise to “Reba” since in both series, she played family women who became single after learning that their husbands had cheated on them. “Malibu Country” factored in McEntire’s other principal line of work, since her character got back to the music career she had given up. A notable co-star was Lily Tomlin as her mother.

Though it certainly wasn’t her show entirely, ABC’s “Big Sky” made room for McEntire in its final season (2022-23), which was subtitled “Deadly Trails” and gave her something different to do as a tour guide who was a pivotal part of investigators’ probe of a hiker’s death. Rex Linn, McEntire’s significant other, played her husband in the series during that season. He’s also slated to appear with her regularly in “Happy’s Place.”

Additionally, McEntire had a recurring role on CBS’ “Young Sheldon,” and she’s been a coach for the past two seasons of NBC’s “The Voice.” She’ll return to the latter role for the upcoming season.

Robert Downey Jr.

Q: I was wondering if you had heard if Robert Downey Jr. made “Sherlock Holmes 3” yet? If so, when was it released?

A: The long-awaited third installment of the successful Sherlock Holmes movies, with Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” 2008) as the titular sleuth, is still on hold. But it’s “alive in our hearts,” according to Downey’s wife and producing partner, Susan.

OF SHERLOCK HOLMES ON WARNER BROS.

“There’s no update, other than it’s still very much alive in our hearts,” she told ScreenRant.com earlier this year. “There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.”

People have been wondering about the film for over a decade now — since the second film in the series, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” was released in 2011 and earned a half-billion dollars at the box office.

But one reason people, including the Downeys, are talking about it again is the news that the films’ original director, Guy Ritchie (“Snatch,” 2000), is now working on a TV series called “Young Sherlock” that looks at the great detective as a boy.

That’s good news for folks who just want to see more of Ritchie’s take on Holmes. But people specifically interested in seeing Downey Jr. in the role might worry that this new series means the third film is dead — hence Susan’s assurance that it’s still “alive.”

While Susan focused on the story, another key requirement for making the film is finding space in Robert’s schedule. He’s one of the most in-demand stars of the moment, thanks largely to his success in the Sherlock Holmes and Aveng- ers movies. Indeed, “Sherlock Holmes 3” is just one of the 21 different movies he’s either possibly or definitely involved with right now, according to IMDb.com.

Q: I was sad to see “Bull” end. What’s the actress who played Marissa doing now?

A: Geneva Carr didn’t waste much time before booking an indie movie and a couple of high-profile guest spots after her six-season legal dramedy “Bull” ended in 2022. She appeared in the 2023 romantic comedy “Asian Persuasion,” about an underachiever who comes up with an overwrought scheme to avoid paying alimony to his more successful ex-wife.

And she bookended that with one-off guest spots on a couple of guest-hungry series: she did an episode of “Law & Order” in April 2023, and just a few months ago appeared on “Elsbeth,” the high-profile “Good Wife” spinoff.

Next up, Carr has another indie comedy in the works, called “Mooch,” about a golf course caddie who stumbles into a job as a private investigator. We can assume that hijinks will ensue.

But we only assume it, because the film is still in post-production. It’s taken a while because it was being made during the Hollywood strikes, thanks to a special arrangement the producers reached with the actors’ union. Shooting finished in January, and they’re now doing the finishing touches while they work out distribution.

While all that happens, Carr is doing what so many screen actors do while they’re between roles: theater. This spring she had a leading role in “Breaking the Story,” a darkly comedic drama about what journalists go through to bring us the news.

It was a return to the stage for Carr, who’s been there a fair bit, even earning a Tony

Compromised courtship: Love, religion and reality clash in all-new TLC series

With a first season promising drama, uncertainty, heartwarming conversations (and a little heartbreak to boot), there’s still time to get to know “Forbidden Love’s” inaugural couples before the chaos begins Sunday, July 21, on TLC.

This brand-new series follows four couples who are deeply in love as they face the common hurdle complicating their relationships: religion. “Hailing from different faiths,” TLC describes, “one partner from each couple is converting or has decided to relinquish their family-of-origin and culture entirely.

“Facing such intense traditional differences,” TLC asks, “can their relationships endure the trials of converting or will their love falter under the pressure?”

Raised a devout Catholic, Laurie, 36, decided to abandon her religion after the untimely death of her father. After meeting 32-year-old Eli, Laurie’s relationship with religion was tested, as Eli is a devout Orthodox Jew. After deciding to convert for her partner, Laurie now finds herself “giving up her clothes, changing her hair, taking classes, studying for tests and preparing to completely change her lifestyle,” according

to TLC, all the while questioning if the love of her life is worth losing her sense of self. Next, we meet Lindsey, 34, and Elmer, 23, a couple facing some hard realizations of their own, as Elmer has recently left his Amish community and still struggles to adjust to the “English” world. Lindsey, who held many preconceived notions about the Amish community, believed Elmer would be a wholesome, devoted and shy partner. In reality, however, Elmer’s wandering eye and the added pressures of a coming baby create endless tension, despite the couple’s levity and obvious chemistry.
