Ramírez and Guardians look to keep momentum going

It’s been a less-than-stellar Major League Baseball season for the Cleveland Guardians, who had high hopes following an unexpected playoff run last year.

Kicking off the 2023 campaign with a 10-9 record in a mediocre AL Central division, the Guardians looked to build momentum in June when their offence began to heat up, with José Ramírez continuing to lead the charge in the second half of the season. Now, the Guardians look to close out their series against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Aug. 6, in a game streaming live on Peacock.

Since making his Guardians debut in 2013, José Ramírez is a cornerstone of the Guardians franchise. Ramírez has consistently put on display an elite on-field performance over the past 10 seasons and, with a career batting average of .279, he has consistently come through with clutch hits and more than 200 home runs. He has also stolen over 180 bases, making him a constant threat at any point in the game.

Proving he’s worth every penny, the Guardians recently signed Ramirez to a $141-million contract extension. He was the team’s lone representative in this year’s All-Star Game (teammate Emmanuel Clase opted out due to family obligations), and he has led the team in multiple offensive categories, including slugging percentage and home runs. Impressively, Ramírez has, as of this writing, managed to pick up a hit in 76.7% of 86 games played.

Those are solid stats, but the White Sox know how to slow him down. In their first three meetings, the White Sox walked away victorious, and Ramírez managed to pull off only one hit in those three meetings — something Ramírez will surely look to change in Sunday’s match.

After wrapping their weekend series against the White Sox, the Guardians will have to quickly shift their focus to a visit from the all-offensive Toronto Blue Jays. Look for Ramirez and the Guardians to come out swinging and get on the board early when the Jays take on the Guardians in a four-game series beginning Monday, Aug. 7, airing on ESPN.

Fandom made ‘Super’: CBS premieres new competition series honoring music fans

After decades of competitive reality shows committed to finding the most talented singers, dancers, performers and the like, CBS launches an unscripted series dedicated to the fans — well, to the “superfans,” to be exact. Honoring the most loyal of six celebrities’ fan bases, the network’s new competition series tests a group of contestants’ knowledge in exchange for a chance to meet their idols up close and personal. Originally scheduled to arrive in June, “Superfan” premieres Wednesday, Aug. 9, on CBS, the CBS app and Paramount+.

Created by executive producers Keltie Knight (“Footloose,” 2011) and Jodi Roth (“Inappropriate Jeff,” 2014), “Superfan” makes use of a classic game show model — think BBC’s “Mastermind,” if you’ve seen it — testing players on a smattering of facts about the musician they all share a love for. Each week, beginning with LL Cool J (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), one music star is welcomed to perform and look on as their biggest fans settle the No.1-fan question once and for all.

The series has a six-episode freshman season, and it is hosted by Canadian TV personality Knight and Canadian-American former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson (“The NFL Today”). It features one new musical celebrity per episode, and following LL Cool J’s inaugural episode, the weekly guests of honor include: Canadian country music legend Shania Twain (“That Don’t Impress Me Much,” 1997); Cuban-American pop sensation Gloria Estefan (“Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” 1987); Alabama-born country foursome Little Big Town (“Pontoon,” 2012); rapper and Miami native Pitbull (“I Know You Want Me,” 2009); and Tennesseean singer/ songwriter Kelsea Ballerini (“Miss Me More,” 2017).

As the artist’s fans compete across several rounds to figure out who will come out as the one and only “superfan,” they each get the opportunity to interact with their favorite artist, thus making their music fandom dreams come true just by taking part. By the end of each episode, the artist in the spotlight will crown their No. 1 fan and present to them a unique set of prizes. While discussing his excitement about co-hosting the new show, Burleson stated that “Superfan” “perfectly captures the energy of concert vibes and competition,” adding that “as a host, I get to meet music icons and watch everyday fans compete for a dream prize.”

As far as the at-home audience’s interaction with the fun goes, Burleson notes, “You will dance, laugh and even cry by the end of each episode, but more importantly, you’ll walk away a superfan yourself.”

And Burleson isn’t the only person delighted to be taking the game show genre to new heights; creators Knight and Roth also expressed their own love for the series in the CBS news release.

Q: With all of your other activities, including your weekday co-host role on “Good Morning America,” how much of a time commitment is hosting “The $100,000 Pyramid” for you?

A: It’s a lot of work. We shot this whole season in four or five days, and it was just as much fun as ever, but we’re doing six shows a day. The great thing is that the energy is always high, and the enthusiasm is there in each show.

We have a great crew and great celebrities, so if everyone comes in with the right attitude, it flies by. You suddenly look up and say, “Oh! We’re done for the day?” Granted, that’s at 8 or 9 at night, but you just don’t realize it because everybody’s having a good time.

Q: “The $100,000 Pyramid” typically is a summer show for ABC, but has there been any discussion with you of it airing during the regular television season?

A: We still have some episodes from last year that have not aired, on top of the ones we’ve done this year, so we do have enough that we could put the show on then.

Q: Hosts of other game shows have been contestants on “The $100,000 Pyramid.” Do you have a desire to be a contestant on some other games?

A: Ooooohhhh … well, no. With something like “The Chase,” that would be over before you knew it. That would run me down in a heartbeat, but I love game shows. They’ve asked me to go on “Celebrity Family Feud” a few times, and we’ve never made that happen. I think I’m too scared, unbelievably. Those people will come on my show, but I’m too scared to go on theirs.

Q: What did Bob Barker do before “The Price Is Right”?

A: The magic Bob Barker brought to “The Price Is Right” was in how he interacted with the contestants. And it was his gift with audiences that got him into the TV business in the first place.

He actually studied as an economist but soon moved to a job in radio. His job at KTTS in Springfield, Mo., gave him his first taste of crowd work.

“All the hosts were taking unrehearsed contestants out of the studio audience and creating spontaneous entertainment with them,” he told Emmys.com (after being inducted into the Emmys Hall of Fame). “I had never been in a school play and I had never been in front of an audience before, but I found that I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife had heard the show and when I got home she said, ‘That’s what you should do. You do that better than you’ve done anything else.’”

That’s the sort of advice you shouldn’t ignore, and he didn’t. He soon moved with his wife to Los Angeles to do his own radio show, “The Bob Barker Show.” And when TV producer Ralph Edwards heard Barker on his car radio, he knew he’d found what he was looking for: someone to host the new, daytime version of the hit game show “Truth or Consequences.” Barker hosted that for 18 years. During the final two of those years, he moonlighted with another hosting gig, on “The Price Is Right.” And the rest is daytime TV history. I mean that literally, by the way — across his 35-year run, Barker made history on “The Price Is Right,” setting precedents (shortly after he joined, it was expanded to become the first hour-long game show in TV history) and breaking records (in 2002, he broke Johnny Carson’s record for continuous performances on the same network television show).

Q: What’s Dylan McDermott doing now? I last saw him on “American Horror Story,” but I figured he’d have a new show by now.

A: Far from not having a show on TV in the past few years, at one point Dylan McDermott had two.

The ruggedly handsome leading man, still best known for his role on the long-running legal drama “The Practice” (1997 to 2004), was starring on two separate procedural cop dramas last year: “FBI: Most Wanted” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”

To be fair, there are reasons why you might not have known that.

He actually played a bad guy on “Organized Crime” — a crime boss being pursued by the show’s good guys — and he left midway through the show’s second season.

He immediately signed on to do “FBI: Most Wanted” after that, joining it midway through its third season.

He says he was grateful for the opportunity “FBI” gave him to be a “good guy” again.

“I played a lot of good characters in my career, but recently, the last 10 years, I think they’ve been more questionable — certainly from ‘American Horror Story’ to ‘Organized Crime’ and some movies in there. So it was time to go back to the good,” he told E! News.

TV titans: ‘The Challenge: USA’ returns with star-studded second season

Tie your shoes and gather at the starting line as Season 2 of “The Challenge: USA” kicks off with a high-octane, twopart premiere, beginning Thursday, Aug. 10, on CBS, and concluding Sunday, Aug. 13.

“The Challenge” pits reality superstars from the CBS-verse against each other, asking them to compete in (what CBS calls) “the most unpredictable and demanding game of their lives.” CBS’s description further shares: “With an ever-changing game, players will be in a constant state of paranoia, unable to trust anyone but themselves,” as teams compete in numerous games, challenges and missions in order to win prizes and advantages in the game. As the competition heats up, some players will be able to keep up while others will learn “The Challenge” is simply too challenging to complete.

This season features titan players and winners from CBS franchises such as “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “The Amazing Race,” along with (for the first time) some past contestants from MTV’s own “The Challenge,” all competing for the winning title and a spot on the upcoming
