Scheffler wants it all at Tour Championship

The culminating event of the PGA Tour is upon us, as the 2023 PGA Tour Championship tees off Aug. 23 to 27 at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Preliminary rounds air live on the Golf Channel, while CBS offers live coverage of the final rounds Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27.

Born June 21, 1996, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Scheffler spent most of his young life in Dallas. Before turning pro, Scheffler won the individual state title three years in a row and further sharpened his skills at the University of Texas, where he earned multiple all-American honors and helped his team win a national championship.

Bursting onto the professional golf scene in 2018, the American hasn’t missed a beat, climbing the ranks and proving to the golf world that he’s here to stay. One of Scheffler’s standout moments came during the 2020 PGA Championship when he made history by shooting the lowest score ever recorded in a major by a rookie.

This season, Scheffler is at it again, sitting at the top of the standings in both the world rankings and money leaderboard, earning over $18 million. He has had seven consecutive top-five finishes — the longest streak since Tiger Woods — and his 2.81 strokes gained tee-to-green this season is one of the best single-season paces for any player in the PGA since tracking began two years ago. Adding to an already impressive season, Scheffler is making a bogey or worse just 10.1% of the time, keeping him on pace for the lowest rate since — once again — Tiger Woods in 2000 (9.8).

Going into the final big tour event of the year, Scheffler has his work cut out for him, as the course is a competitive one. Sitting in the top five all season, Rory McIlroy is searching for his first PGA Championship victory since 2014 — a drought that McIlroy will look to put a stop to as players hit the green at East Lake Golf Club.

Powerful forces: ‘Ahsoka’ must save the universe in new Star Wars spinoff series

A fan-favorite former Jedi Knight finally gets her live-action, starring moment in the new Disney+ limited series, “Star Wars: Ahsoka,” debuting Wednesday, Aug. 23, on the streamer. Starring Rosario Dawson (“Dopesick”) in the title role, the eight-episode series follows Ahsoka Tano as she takes on the not-so-small task of protecting the galaxy from imminent threats.

Former Jedi Padawan-turned-Rebel Alliance member Ahsoka is one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe among fans of the franchise’s animated films and TV series. Before Dawson’s live-action portrayal of Ahsoka in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” the character first appeared in the 2008 animated feature and subsequent TV series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” as a teenage apprentice of Anakin Skywalker.

The new series is set just after the events of the animated series “Rebels” and in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian.” Hayden Christensen (“Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones,” 2002) reprises his role as Anakin yet again in “Ahsoka,” after

appearing in 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker,” and bringing the character back to life in the spinoff series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” — presumably as a Force ghost, as he is long dead in this timeline.

So, who will the baddies in “Ahsoka” be without Darth Vader to represent the dark side? Returning to portray Grand Admiral Thrawn is “The Witcher” star Lars Mikkelsen, who lent his voice to the chilling Imperial officer in “Rebels.”

Icy in demeanor and appearance — Thrawn is Chiss and his skin glows blue — he is only the tip of the villain iceberg in “Ahsoka.” Portraying even more adversaries challenging the Jedi and the universe at large are Ivanna Sakhno (“High Fidelity”) as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto (“The Last Tour,” 2016) as Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth and the late Ray Stevenson (“Das Boot”) as Baylan Skoll.

“Ahsoka” also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo (“Day Shift,” 2022) as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“Kate,” 2021) as Hera Syndulla, Eman Esfandi (“The Inspection,” 2022) as Ezra Bridger and David Tennant (“Doctor Who”) as the voice of droid Huyang, reprising his role from the Clone Wars series.

Portraying a character that is as cherished as Ahsoka, and held in such high regard by one of film and TV’s most active and vocal fan bases, is a daunting task. Dawson was up for the challenge, however, crediting stunt co-ordinator Ming Qiu (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) with getting her into shape when it came to wielding a lightsaber like a Jedi, as she shared on the Dagobah Dispatch podcast in May: “When [Qiu] said, ‘This one did not make my eyes hurt,’ that was the first compliment that I got, and I think I cried.”

Q: What is it in Alyssa Farah Griffin’s background that qualifies her to be a co-host of “The View”?

A: For a program that relies heavily on political conversation, Griffin is in the right place, having held several positions in the Republican administration between 2017 and 2020. She was the press secretary to the vice president, then special assistant to the president, and then deputy assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs and press secretary to the United States Department of Defense.

After that, Griffin went into the business of being an analyst on television, working online for The Hill’s program and also appearing regularly on CNN – which she still does, while fulfilling her regular weekday job on ABC’s “The View.” She had been a guest on the latter show’s panel during 2021 and 2022, then was made a permanent co-host with the start of the series’ 26th season in the fall of 2022 (along with Ana Navarro, who’d had a similar arrangement).

Griffin came by her interest in public affairs naturally, being the daughter of Joseph Farah, who was an editor at both the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Sacramento Union. She wrote (as did her mother) for the website WorldNetDaily, which her father founded.

Elsewhere, Griffin was the captain of her high-school girls’ soccer team, and she has a black belt in karate. She married Justin Griffin in 2021, and some members of her family boycotted her wedding – including her father and stepmother – because of their political differences with her.

Q: What has Dwight K. Schrute done since “The Office” ended?

A: Rainn Wilson’s career is a classic example of Hollywood struggling to make use of an actor’s inexplicable charm.

Wilson, as you say, is best known as “The Office’s” most annoying assistant to the regional manager, Dwight Schrute, a character who was designed to be hard to like. Yet audiences loved him anyway. When that now-classic sitcom ended its run on NBC in 2013, Wilson, his agents and a whole army of TV and film producers set about trying to recapture that Schrute magic. But so far, none of the many roles he’s taken has had

The boldest attempt was putting him in the lead role in a procedural cop drama — 2015’s “Backstrom.” Like on “The Office,” he played a hard-to-like character (a hard-living, ill-tempered elite detective), but unlike “The Office,” audiences found it a little too hard. Fox canceled “Backstrom” after a single season.

There was a similar attempt, before “The Office” ended, to make Wilson into a movie star. He played an inept, would-be superhero in 2010’s “Super,” which, despite its superstar director/writer (James Gunn, who would soon direct the first “Guardians of the Galaxy”

movie in 2014), was a massive flop.

After these big swings, Wilson has mostly settled into a supporting-star career, in shows such as AMC’s “Dark Winds” and major films like 2022’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”

But NBC is still a little extra invested in Wilson. Earlier this year, it launched a new docuseries on its streaming platform, Peacock, that puts Wilson in the lead again. “Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss” sends him around the world to explore both the happiest and unhappiest places on Earth.

Q: Does Melissa Fumero have a new project lined up after “Blockbuster”?

A: Melissa Fumero has been a fast mover in the past. She leaped into the starring role on “Blockbuster,” a sitcom about the world’s last Blockbuster Video location, a year after her star-making role in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” came to an end in 2021. That said, “Blockbuster” was only canceled last December (after one underwhelming season), so it would be unrealistic for her to have a new full-time gig by now.

But she nonetheless has done quick work finding a number of part-time ones. Most notably (and most excitingly for “Nine-Nine” fans), she’s voiced a character on all eight episodes of “Digman,” a new animated comedy created by and starring her former “Nine-Nine” co-star Andy Samberg.

She also voiced the character Sophie in another animated comedy, “Velma,” a prequel series of the enduringly popular “Scooby-Doo.”

Those two would add up to a full-time job for many, but the hard-working Fumero clearly wasn’t satisfied. She’s also taken up directing, helming two episodes of the streaming series “Primo” and an episode of the NBC sitcom “Grand Crew.”

Riverdale WCIU 8 p.m.

It’s the end of an era in more ways than one in this series finale. Archie (KJ Apa) and the gang have been transported to the 1950s, where it all began for the beloved characters. But will his dream of a music career leave us with a happy ending?

It’s called “Busisure.” Andre (Marcus Scribner) and Annika (Justine Skye) mix business with pleasure when he negotiates a contract on her behalf in this season finale. Aaron’s (Trevor Jackson) relationship goes to the next level.

Trouble in paradise: Kody faces a reckoning in Sister Wives Season 18

Fans will finally be allowed a glimpse into the multi-relationship breakdown between polygamist Kody Brown and his wives (past and present), as “Sister Wives” returns for Season 18, premiering Sunday, Aug. 20, on TLC.

Having started in 2010, this thoroughly binged reality series follows the life of Kody Brown, 54, a husband and father, who (according to TLC) “fell in love, then fell in love again and then again,” soon finding himself partnered with four women: Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn – Robyn, who joined the family in the series’ first season (and, after his divorce from Meri, is now Kody’s only legal wife).

Since then, however, a lot has changed for the busy patriarch. Season 17 marked a historic turn in Kody’s life, as Christine announced she would be leaving Kody and their joint family in November 2021. The story unfolded further, as both Janelle and Meri announced their separation from Kody in Decem-

ber 2022, during the tell-all that aired following the Season 17 finale, “Sister Wives: One on One.” The last fans heard, Kody was down three wives, with only Robyn at his side.

The special episode, hosted by Sukanya Krishnan, also brought light to an ongoing feud between Kody and Christine, as Kody went on record to allege that his ex-wife was a “game player” who often caused drama throughout the family by starting confrontations. Krishnan later brought out Christine, who categorically denied Kody’s accusations, stating they were “absolutely ridiculous.”
