Alcaraz looks to defend title at US Open

Carlos Alcaraz is looking to defend his title at the 2023 U.S. Open in New York City’s Flushing Meadows, airing live on ESPN [US] / TSN [CA] from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Aug. 28 to Sept. 10.

It’s the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year, and with a total of 128 players in the men’s and women’s singles categories, the competition looks to be fierce. Reigning champion Alcaraz will look to make a repeat performance after beating Casper Ruud (World No. 5, at press time) at last year’s U.S. Open, becoming the youngest player ever to reach world No. 1. At just 20 years old, Alcaraz’s continued rise through the ranks in his short career has been nothing short of amazing. Coming out of Rafael Nadal’s tennis academy, the Spaniard has drawn many comparisons to his idol with his dedication, work ethic and confidence in his abilities. Coming off a Wimbledon victory against the legendary Novak Djokovic (current World No. 2), Alcaraz holds a 430-point lead in the men’s ATP rankings over Djokovic, whom he beat in a six-set match to win the second Grand Slam title of his career. It also continued his epic rivalry against Djokovic as he was able to stop the Serbian from increasing his men’s record total of 23 major titles and ending “The Joker’s” 34-match win streak at Wimbledon.

With Djokovic confirming his participation at this year’s U.S. Open, he remains firmly in the hunt for his 24th Grand Slam major, but that won’t come without a fight from the sport’s brightest young star, Carlos Alcaraz.

A series ‘Reborn’: ‘The Wheel of Time’ returns for Season 2

Within the realm of the fantastic, several novels, movies, video games and series exist to tickle the adventure bone. However, despite the plethora of content, few franchises have the hold that Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings do. One series that has recently re-entered the chat, however, is “The Wheel of Time,” which is about to begin its second season on Prime Video.

First written by Robert Jordan beginning in 1990, the 15-book series was expected to comprise just six novels. In 2009, the book series was taken over by fellow fantasy writing powerhouse Brandon Sanderson, following Jordan’s death two years earlier. As time progressed and more books emerged, fans of high fantasy craved a TV or film adaptation that would do the thenstill-growing book series justice. Finally, in 2018, following nearly two decades of rights disputes, low-budget pilots and controversy, it was announced that Amazon Studios would partner with Sony Pictures Television to make everyone’s otherworldly dreams come true.

Now, following further setbacks brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and more, “The Wheel of Time” Season 2 premieres Friday, Sept. 1, on Prime Video.

Already renewed for a third season ahead of the Season 2 premiere, WOT

fans can rest easy knowing that the series’ writers did not need to rush to fit several books’ worth of content into one (potentially) final set of episodes. Instead, audiences get another eight episodes in the second season, while looking forward to even more come Season 3 (likely to be released 2024-25).

When Season 1 began, viewers met Moiraine (Rosamund Pike, “Gone Girl,” 2014) as she began her quest to find the Dragon Reborn in the Two Rivers. As a member of the powerful Aes Sedai, an order of women with the ability to channel a form of elemental magic called the One Power, Moiraine has been called upon to find a kind of “chosen one,” the reincarnation of a channeller called the Dragon, who once destroyed the world. After gathering a small group — any of whom could possibly be the Dragon Reborn — Moiraine, her Warder, Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney, “Big Hero 6,” 2014), and the four new candidates — Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford, “Bulletproof”), Mat Cauthon (played by “Clique’s” Barney Harris in Season 1 and replaced by “The Witcher’s” Dónal Finn in Season 2), Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski, “High Flyers”) and Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden, “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” 2019) — begin their quest to defeat a primordial evil known as the Dark One.

For the sake of brevity and avoiding as many spoilers as possible, suffice it to say that the first season did not end on a high note for Moiraine and her tribe of villagers. Despite the unveiling of the Dragon Reborn, a battle between the reincarnation and a villain presumed to be the Dark One only appeared to awaken a more sinister energy. Needless to say, a war is on the horizon headed into this new instalment.

Tensions rise as vampire roommates Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natalie Demetriou) and Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) find life among the living in Staten Island to be more taxing than usual in this season finale, and together turn to Colin (Mark Proksch) for help. Q: I know it didn’t last, but I loved the drama series “The Philanthropist.” What has its star been doing since then?

A: You’re right that it wasn’t a hit, and so “The Philanthropist” was really just a blip in star James Purefoy’s long and successful career.

It was, however, a great showcase for his combination of grit and refinement — a combination he displayed again as a villainous cult leader in the Fox drama “The Following” from 2013 to 2015. More recently, he did lengthy arcs on TV dramas “Pennyworth” and “Malpractice” and appeared in the historical PBS miniseries “Marie Antoinette.”

But he’s not just a TV guy. Lately, he’s launched his own, unlikely film franchise: the “Fisherman’s Friends” movies.

It started as an independently made British comedy, “Fisherman’s Friends.” It was a runaway hit, based on a true story of a group of fishermen from the British region of Cornwall who sang sea shanties to pass the time but suddenly launched to fame after getting a global record deal.

The success of the first led soon to a sequel, “Fisherman’s Friends: One and All,” released last year. Purefoy stars in the films as one of the singers, and signed on as a producer of the sequel.

The series’ success must have been welcome for Purefoy, whose big-screen career was a bit tarnished by a pair of all-time flops. In the same year he did “The Philanthropist” (2009), he had the title role in the big-budget adventure film “Solomon Kane,” which didn’t even earn back half of its $45-million budget. He followed that up with a leading role in 2012’s “John Carter,” one of the most notorious bombs of all time.

Q: Has Vanna White done anything other than “Wheel of Fortune”?

A: TV icon Vanna White, who reveals the letters on and otherwise co-hosts the long-running game show “Wheel of Fortune,” found her calling early in her career, but it wasn’t her first try.

She was a model and actress first, and was a contestant in the Miss Georgia 1978 pageant. She soon moved from Georgia to Los Angeles to try her luck on screen.

“The Great Seduction” (Aug. 30, Movie Premiere)

Based on the Canadian film “La Grande Séduction,” this new Spanish take follows the inhabitants of the small island of Santa María del Mar, whose livelihoods took a hit during industrialization. With a new chance at prosperity within reach, things look like they are about to take a turn for the better, and all they have left to do is find a doctor to move there.

She didn’t have a lot of it at first. She had roles in a few films and TV series, including the 1981 slasher film “Graduation Day” and the slightly more reputable 1981 thriller “Looker.”

And then there’s the odd case of “Gypsy Angels,” a film she shot in 1980 (thus making it, technically, her first role) but which ran into myriad production problems. It wasn’t released until 1990, by which point she was a major TV star. The fact that she played

a stripper in the movie contrasted a little with the wholesome image she had built on “Wheel.”

She started building that image in 1982 when she won an open casting call (beating more than 200 other would-be letter-turners) to get the coveted “Wheel of Fortune” gig. Almost all of her screen work since has been “Wheel”-related, at least. She has, for example, played herself on numerous shows and in a couple of films.

Q: Kara Killmer is such a big part of “Chicago Fire,” but I don’t remember her from anything before that. What did she do previously?

A: The actress who became paramedic Sylvie Brett in the NBC drama’s third season had a Hulu series before that, a reality show called “If I Can Dream,” in which the Baylor University graduate was one of five aspiring performers who shared a Los Angeles residence. Cameras followed them, “Big Brother”-style, but they knew that whatever they did and whatever was seen was in service of building fame and careers for themselves. Whether or not it came directly out of that, Killmer had a guest role on the then-ABC Family’s (now Freeform) “Jane by Design” and landed a pilot for NBC titled “Tin Man,” but it wasn’t picked up to series there. Still, the network liked her enough to approve her for “Chicago Fire” as a replacement for Lauren German, whose Leslie Shay character died in the line of duty.

Killmer’s Brett has been through a lot on the show, including romantic misadventures that eventually led her to pair up with Captain Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer, who has been making recurring guest appearances lately). Though their romance seemed to crumble under long-distance circumstances that took Casey to Oregon, to tend to a couple of young friends, he proposed to Brett in the 11th-season finale … something likely to have interesting results in Season 12, which won’t begin until midseason at the earliest, given the work stoppage related to the actors’ and writers’ strikes.

Killmer is married to Andrew Cheney, who was her co-star in “Beyond the Mask,” a 2015 drama that’s the sole theatrical feature Killmer has made to date.
