Aaron Rodgers makes Jets season debut on Monday Night Football

The NFL is back in action, as the new-look New York Jets kick off their season Monday, Sept. 11, at Metlife Stadium, facing the Buffalo Bills, last season’s AFC East winners and division foes. The game airs on ESPN and ABC, with kick-off at 8:15 p.m.

It was all New York Jets this off-season as the acquisition of likely Hall of Fame-bound quarterback, now former Green Bay Packer, Aaron Rodgers took the NFL headlines by storm. The 39-year-old enters his 19th season, joining a Jets team coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign, having missed the playoffs for a 12th straight year.

With Rodgers now manning the ship, he brings a new sense of optimism as the Jets officially enter an era of raised expectations and excitement the team hasn’t felt in years.

Speaking with reporters following the first official day of Jets training camp, Rodgers said he welcomes the added hype and pressure.

“We want everyone to jump on the wagon now,” Rodgers told reporters. “High expectations are a good thing.”

Set to face an elite Buffalo squad that has won the AFC East three years in a row, Rodgers and the Jets will have to be sharp right out of the gate. The Bills have gone 5-1 since 2020 in head-to-head clashes and are 68-57 overall (since 1960).

Last season the Jets came out victorious in Week 9 as they defeated the Bills 20-17 in the Big Apple. The Jets played an excellent defensive game sacking Bills quarterback Josh Allen eight times and forcing him to throw for two interceptions.

While still playing for Green Bay, Rodgers and the Packers were defeated in their Week 8 matchup against the Bills, but despite the loss, Rodgers put up significantly better numbers (63% completion rating, two touchdowns, and 91.4% passer rating).

Dixon days: Daryl dominates

‘Walking Dead’ series

Premiering Sunday, Sept. 10, on AMC and AMC+, “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” sees the return of Norman Reedus (“The Boondock Saints,” 1999) as onscreen anti-hero Daryl Dixon.

Created by David Zabel (“ER”), “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” is the fifth spinoff from the flagship series, hereafter referred to as TWD, and takes place after TWD’s 11 seasons of horror. And while viewers have already gathered their fair share of Daryl details since his first appearance in TWD’s Season 1 episode “Tell It to the Frogs,” audiences have never seen the troubled “walker”-fighting hero quite like this.

“Daryl Dixon” follows the titular character as he “washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why” (per AMC). According to the official synopsis, “[T]he series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home,” noting that as “he makes the journey ... the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.”

The title of this latest TWD spinoff was announced in October 2022, which is also when filming began in Paris. Despite AMC’s initial desire to produce a series that followed another TWD character, Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride, “The Mist,” 2007), the network eventually landed on “Daryl

Dixon” as a result of scheduling conflicts with McBride. That said, McBride is expected to reprise her role as Carol in at least one of the premiere season’s six episodes.

In fact, as mentioned by Vanity Fair writer Derek Lawrence in his November 2022 article titled “Norman Reedus Unpacks the Walking Dead Finale and His ‘F—-ing Great’ Spin-Off,” Daryl himself made a nod toward his own future series in the final episodes of the flagship series’ finale.

“It’s not like we’re never gonna see each other again,” Daryl tells Carol in an intimate scene toward the end of ‘Rest in Peace,’” Lawrence writes, noting Carol’s response: “I’m allowed to be a little sad. You’re my best friend.”

And while we have no idea what may be in store for Carol, fans can certainly expect more “Daryl Dixon” beyond the first six episodes. Just last month, AMC announced that the series had already been renewed for a second season.

Also joining the cast for Season 1 is French actress Clémence Poésy, known for her roles in films such as the Harry Potter franchise (beginning in 2005), “In Bruges” (2008) and “Tenet” (2020), among others.

Poésy plays Isabelle, a French woman with a dark Parisian past and a connection to a “progressive religious group.” She joins forces with Daryl on his journey.

Six teams of friends reunite in groups of four in order to relive their glory days, competing in a wild assortment of crazy physical and mental challenges in order to potentially win a life-changing $150 000 prize. The catch is – while fighting to win, they must all live together in the same lake house. Hosted by Josh Duhamel, Season 1 of this new game show, “Buddy Games,” premieres

Q: I see that Lea Thompson is returning in a new series. What was the last one she did?

A: As a series regular, that would have been “Switched at Birth,” on which she played one of the mothers whose daughters were … well, check the title of the show again. She also had recurring roles on “Scorpion” (as the Katharine McPhee character’s mom) and “The Goldbergs,” and she had a guest part last year on “Star Trek: Picard.”

It’s worth noting that Thompson also was a director on the latter two programs, and she’s been spending a lot of time in that job –which she shares with her husband, Howard Deutch (“Pretty in Pink”) – in recent times.

She also has guided episodes of “Will Trent” (on which Deutch is an executive producer and occasional director), “Resident Alien” and “Young Sheldon” among other shows. Earlier, Thompson directed four “Switched at Birth” stories as well as two of the “Jane Doe” mystery movies in which she starred. Thompson’s other major series credit as a star is the 1990s sitcom “Caroline in the City,” which ran almost as long as “Switched at Birth,” ending just short of 100 episodes. She’ll have another shot at longevity on weekly TV when she returns in “The Spencer Sisters,” a Canadian import premiering Oct. 4 on The CW. She and Stacey Farber play a mystery-writer mother and police-officer daughter (despite the “Sisters” in the title) who decide to open a private-detective agency. Thompson isn’t credited with directing any of that show yet, but that’s likely to change if it continues for additional seasons.

Q: What has Jeffrey Donovan been doing since “Burn Notice”?

A: He’s been coming full circle, in a way. The popularity of USA Network’s dramedy “Burn Notice,” which ran from 2007 to 2013, caught many by surprise and turned star Jeffrey Donovan into a leading man.

Rather than pursue hunky-hero stardom, though, he soon switched to supporting

roles in weightier projects. That included playing morally complex characters who flirted with outright villainy in major films such as “Sicario” (2015) and “Wrath of Man” (2021).

But he recently turned back toward straightforward heroism, and leading-man status, on “Law & Order.” He joined the revival of NBC’s flagship cop drama in 2021, playing Det. Frank Cosgrove, the

latest in a long line of detectives who anchor the “Order” aspect of the show. (For anyone who, somehow, has never seen an episode of “Law & Order,” the episodes are generally divided into two halves, one following cops and one following lawyers.) Donovan wrapped his second season in the role earlier this year, and we have every reason to believe he’ll be back next season — the show’s 23rd.

Q: Are the people who did “Homeland” going to make another series?

A: Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon, college buddies at Princeton who moved to Hollywood together to pursue writing careers, have already launched their first post-”Homeland” series. But their efforts to make more haven’t been as successful.

Gansa and Gordon created the Showtime spy drama “Homeland” in 2011, based on an earlier Israeli series, and they were very handson through its eight-season run. But once it ended in 2020, they were free to pursue other projects.

The first was a documentary film called “The Longest War,” about America’s military engagement in Afghanistan.

It took nearly three years to get their next project off the ground: Fox’s anthology crime drama “Accused.”

That was the first actual product to come out of their deal with Sony Pictures Television. I say “actual product” because, otherwise, all the deal has gotten them has been a string of rejected ideas.

They made big news earlier this year when they announced they would team up to create a TV adaptation of the cult sci-fi film “Gattaca” (1997). It was going to air on Showtime, but just a few weeks ago the cable channel pulled out of the project.

That was a repetition of the late-2020 plan to adapt the hit novel “Dinner at the Center of the Earth,” another spy thriller set partly in the Middle East. That, too, was going to put Gansa and Gordon back on Showtime, until Showtime changed its mind.

“Still Up” - Season 1 (Apple TV+ — Sept. 22, Series Premiere)

Bonded by insomnia, best friends Lisa (Antonia Thomas) and Danny (Craig Roberts) stay connected to each other late into the night and find their way through a world of wonderfully weird surprises as their relationship deepens in this almost-romantic comedy. Also starring in the ensemble cast are Blake Harrison, Lois Chimimba, Luke Fetherston and Rich Fulcher.

“The Continental: From the World of John Wick” (Peacock — Sept. 22, Miniseries Premiere)

Set in mid-1970s New York, this three-part, “John Wick” (2014) prequel centers on Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) and how he became the owner of the Continental Hotel, a neutral territory and home away from home for international assassins and members of the criminal underworld. Mel Gibson, Mishel Prada, Ayomide Adegun, Nhung Kate, Katie McGrath, Peter Greene, Jessica Allain and Adam Shapiro also star.

When actors Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool,” 2016) announced their intentions to buy the Wrexham football club — a Welsh professional association club located in Wrexham, North East Wales, operating as the third-oldest club in the world — in 2020, the North American duo was met with many curious glances from football fans across the U.K. and soccer fans back home.

At the time, Wrexham AFC was operating in the National League (the fifth tier of English football, ranked below the Premier League and all three tiers of the English football system), previously described as a mismanaged team barrelling towards the brink of collapse. McElhenney and Reynolds, however, saw nothing but opportunity. With no prior experience, the duo packed their bags and, joined by a crew of cameras, made off to help the team succeed.

A description from FX shares: “‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, U.K., as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling football club.

“From Hollywood to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ will track Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some serious hope and change to a community that could use it.”
