Hovland looks to bring youthful spark at 2023 Ryder Cup

The 44th edition of the Ryder Cup returns as players tee off in Rome beginning Sept. 30 and finishing on Oct. 1, at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. USA Network and NBC will feature live coverage.

As the 2023 Ryder Cup gets underway, Team Europe aims to return to its winning ways after what was a dominant victory for Team U.S. in 2021 (19-9). While the Americans on paper look to have more talent, the Europeans have gone 7-3 in the past 10 Ryder Cups prior to the less-thanpar performance at Whistling Straits.

But Team Europe, now led by four-time Ryder Cup winner Luke Donald, is going into this tournament having put together a team with a good balance of youth, talent and experience. With the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rham, U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry and the world No. 4-ranked Viktor Hovland of Norway, who is participating in his second Ryder Cup tournament. Having burst onto the scene making his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, Hovland has been excellent all season, having earned three top-five finishes, including defending his title at the Hero World Challenge. His proven ability to perform in big moments and against the world’s top golfers is proven in his performances. The Norwegian has placed in the Top 20 at The Masters, U.S. Open and The Open, and was a runner-up at the PGA Championship.

Proving to be one of the best golfers all year, he’s earned his spot at the Ryder Cup, and Team Europe will surely look to absorb some of that momentum.

As the European side boasts elite talent, look for Team U.S. to come out with a strong game looking to defend its title for the first time and hoping to snap a decades-long losing streak.

New clues: ‘The Irrational’ takes an unexpected approach to investigating crime

Some investigators just have the knack when it comes to seeing the missing piece in confounding investigations.

In “The Irrational,” a brand-new crime procedural premiering Monday, Sept. 25, on NBC, Prof. Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin, “The Flash”) is pulled from the world of academia to lend his highly sought-after expertise to virtually unsolvable cases.

“The Irrational” is based on the popular book “Predictably Irrational” by author Dan Ariely, about the theories behind decision-making and rational thought. The series drops Mercer into active investigations in dire need of a fresh perspective. With law enforcement and investigators at a loss for tying suspects and motives to shocking crimes, the professor joins the team to lead them down his unique path of discovery.

In its series description, NBC notes that Mercer’s “insight and unconventional approach to understanding human behavior lead him and the team on a series of intense, unexpected journeys to solve illogical puzzles and perplexing mysteries.”

In the official trailer for the series, Mercer is seen very much at home at the front of a lecture hall, teaching one of his psychology intro courses before he meets a little bit of resistance when he encounters law en-

forcement. An investigator asks him if he’s the “science guy,” leading Mercer to quip, “That’s Bill Nye. I’m actually the behavioral sciences guy.” His sense of humor shows itself again when his theoretical approaches are gently questioned before he remarks, “Gravity was just a theory at one point.”

What are the methods behind Mercer’s breakthrough analysis of these high-profile, dead-end cases? Well, the trailer gives a glimpse into the theories he uses to shed light on where investigative trails have gone cold. Mercer shoots off a few choice $10 phrases like “predictable irrationality,” “paradoxical persuasion,” “attentional blindness” and “bereavement sex” as some of the things knocking around his head as he takes a new look at tough cases.

While Mercer is increasingly pulled away from his academic work as he successfully aids federal investigations, he does make sure to keep two of his best and brightest graduate students in the loop. Molly Kunz (“Chicago Fire”) stars as Phoebe, a protégé of Mercer’s who enthusiastically follows in her professor’s footsteps, both literally and figuratively. Arash DeMaxi (“Partner Track”) is Owen, another one of Mercer’s students who gets pulled into his new side gig.

Q: With all the changes to the CNN lineup lately, it’s good to see Pamela Brown get a new show of her own. I thought I read that she is related to someone famous. Is that true?

A: It is, and on two counts, given who her parents were. Her mother, Phyllis George –a former Miss America – is widely remembered as a trailblazer among national television sportscasters, and she gave birth to Pamela in 1983 while serving as one of the regulars on the CBS pregame show “The NFL Today.”

Brown’s father, John Y. Brown Jr., was the governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983 … and he also was a pro-basketball-team owner and an owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken who bought the latter company from Colonel Harland Sanders.

Brown now has a weekday-afternoon program on CNN, “The Bulletin With Pamela Brown,” the latest step in her career with the cable news network where she began working in 2013. Before that, she had been an anchor-reporter at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C.

During her CNN tenure, Brown also has been a senior Washington correspondent and senior White House correspondent, plus a “CNN Newsroom” weekend anchor and a fill-in anchor on “The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer” and “Erin Burnett OutFront”; she has been Emmy-nominated on a number of occasions. Brown recently earned a Master of Studies in Law degree from George Washington University, and she and her husband have a son and a daughter.

Q: Did Robert Downey Jr. do a third “Sherlock Holmes”? Or will he? At the end of the second movie, it said “The End?” (with a question mark).

A: Is there already a third film with Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” 2008) playing the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes? No. Will there be? Probably.

That’s the best answer available right now.

I say probably because a lot of work has

been put into it already, and because the previous two were basically cash machines for Warner Bros. studios — the sequel, 2011’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” earned more than half a million dollars at the box office.

It was originally supposed to come out in 2020, but it’s been cursed — by script rewrites, by director changes, and later by the pandemic. But everyone involved insists it’s

still going to happen.

The latest assurance came in April of this year, from Susan Downey, one of the previous films’ producers (and also Robert’s wife), who told UnWrapped podcast that it’s “in the hopper.”

“We’re going to do it when it’s right with the right people. But it is a priority for the company and a priority for Robert.”

Q: I feel like I know Alvin Olinsky on “Chicago P.D.” from something as a youth. What did the actor do before?

A: Elias Koteas, formerly of “Chicago P.D.,” wasn’t exactly “a youth” when he got his big break, but you might have been a youth when you saw it. Opinions differ on what his star-making role actually was, but most have narrowed it down to one of two big-screen hits. In both cases, he was playing a street-wise tough in a teen-skewing film.

In 1987, he played a skinhead named Duncan in “Some Kind of Wonderful,” a high school dramedy penned by the great John Hughes (“The Breakfast Club,” 1985). Then three years later, he played the sports-themed vigilante Casey Jones in 1990’s live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie.

He was 26 when he did “Some Kind of Wonderful,” which is a little old to be a high schooler, but so were most of his co-stars. That was kind of Hughes’ calling card — casting adults as teens meant the actors were a little more able to do the dramatic and comedic heavy-lifting his movies required.

In between those two big roles, the Montreal-born Koteas won a Genie (the name of Canada’s movie awards at the time) for his starring role in “Malarek.” Again he was playing a street-wise kid, but this time in an adult-oriented film — the true story of Victor Malarek’s transformation from troubled teen to respected journalist.

Koteas returned for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” in 1993, but that more or less marked the end of his teen-movie career. He put a proper cap on it three years later when he starred in the very adult, multi-award-winning “Crash” (1996), about people who have a sexual fetish for car accidents (not to be confused with 2004’s “Crash,” about racism in America).

Piles of critically acclaimed roles followed, including his five-year run as part of the “One Chicago” TV universe, mostly on “Chicago P.D.,” from 2013 to 2018, playing Det. Alvin Olinsky of the CPD Intelligence Unit.

Bye-bye Blake: ‘The Voice’ returns minus one country superstar

NBC’s “The Voice” returns for its 24th season, premiering Monday, Sept. 25. One familiar face, however, won’t be returning with the rest, as long-running “Voice” coach Blake Shelton (“Body Language,” 2021) announced he won’t be returning to the series for the first time in its 12-year history.

According to NBC, the star has left the show in order to spend more time with family on his Oklahoma ranch, with Shelton having previously been quoted as saying: “I’ve been wrestling with this for a while, and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from The Voice after Season 23.”

“This show has changed my life in every way for the better,” he continued, “and it will always feel like home to me. It’s been a hell of a ride over these 12 years of chair turns, and I want to thank everyone at ‘The Voice’ from NBC, every producer, the writers, musicians, crew and catering people; you are the best.
