Chiefs, Kelce look to continue dominance over New York Jets

The 2023 Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are heading to the Big Apple this weekend as they get set to take on the New York Jets, Sunday Oct. 1, at MetLife Stadium, with all the action airing live on ESPN.

The last time these two teams met, the Chiefs put on an absolute clinic, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the way by throwing for 416 passing yards and translating those into five touchdowns as they defeated the Jets 35-9.

Going into this season — and with Aaron Rodgers ruled out for the remainder of the year after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in his first game of the season — the Jets will undeniably have their work cut out for them on all fronts, particularly on the defensive end. Of the team’s 416 passing yards, 109 yards were completed by none other than tight end Travis Kelce.

With an incredible start to the year, Kelce also added one touchdown on eight catches, with the Jets having no answer, and continuing to prove why he is a handful for so many opposing teams. Overall, the Chiefs continue to lead the series against the New York Jets 20-19-1, and with the Chiefs largely the same squad from their previous match, look for Kelce and co. to follow a similar gameplan.

Beyond time and space: ‘Loki’ returns with uncontrollable powers

We’ve all done the time warp and explored the multiverse, but it’s high time to sort out the timeline. A brand-new season of “Loki” premieres Friday, Oct. 6, on Disney+. Tom Hiddleston (“The Essex Serpent”) returns as the God of Mischief, everyone’s favorite troublemaker, Loki, who has developed a mysterious problem this season.

Owen Wilson (“Haunted Mansion,” 2023) is back as Mobius M. Mobius, the Time Variance Authority agent tasked with helping Loki right his wrongs across the multiverse. The first season of “Loki” saw the Norse God meet his match in an alternate version of himself. Sophia Di Martino (“The Electrical Life of Louis Wain,” 2021) is Sylvie, a variant of Loki who interrupts the Sacred Timeline. After coming together to set things right across space and time, Loki returned to what he thought would be the TVA headquarters he left before his mission, but something still wasn’t right.

In the official trailer for the upcoming season, Mobius brings Loki to a repair shop of sorts, manned by TVA repair guy OB, portrayed by Ke Huy Quan (“American Born Chinese”). Before the pair have time to explain what’s brought them there, Loki

suddenly, uncontrollably disappears in a timeslip, leaving Mobius looking to OB for an answer. “It’s impossible to timeslip in the TVA,” is all he can say, though they just watched it happen.

“Loki” executive producer Kevin Wright told Entertainment Weekly in September that “[OB’s] job is basically every piece of tech, every computer, every thing that is running at the TVA. ... He either designed it or he fixes it and keeps it running.” Having recently picked up an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” Quan is well suited to help repair another multiverse.

While Quan’s character is the latest to join Loki’s crew as he chases chaos across the multiverse, several cast members return for the new season, including Gugu MbathaRaw (“Surface”) as Ravonna Renslayer, an ambitious judge in the TVA who oversees Loki’s case. Literally backing up Loki at one point in the season’s trailer alongside Mobius, Sylvie and OB is Wunmi Mosaku (“We Own This City”) as Hunter B-15. Eugene Cordero (“Star Trek: Lower Decks”) returns as Hunter K-5E, former TVA receptionist.

The upcoming seasons also star Neil Ellice (“Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn”) as Hunter D-90, Jonathan Majors (“Creed III,” 2023) as He Who Remains and Tara Strong (“Teen Titans Go!”) as the voice of Miss Minutes. Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”), Kate Dickie (“Annika”) and Liz Carr (“Silent Witness”) all join the cast this season in as-yetunnamed roles.

Rachel Boston OF “THE MORE LOVE GROWS” ON HALLMARK MOVIES & MYSTERIES

Q: I’ve enjoyed Rachel Boston in many of her cable movies. Where did she get her start?

A: Seen most recently in “The More Love Grows” on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, the actress has been starting to play mothers more frequently … which is appropriate, since she became a first-time mom herself early in 2022. Her first big credit was the 2002-05 NBC series “American Dreams,” inspired by the legendary music show “American Bandstand” and featuring Boston as Beth, who became the sister-in-law of “Bandstand” dancer Beth (Brittany Snow).

Boston went on to do guest shots on many series including “NCIS,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Las Vegas,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “ER” and “Castle.” She landed continuing roles on “In Plain Sight” and “Witches of East End,” and in 2014, she began what has become her long association with the Hallmark brand, which started with the movie “A Ring by Spring” (still repeated fairly often).

The Christmas season has yielded a particular amount of work for Boston, who has worked again for Hallmark in “Ice Sculpture Christmas,” “Christmas in Angel Falls,” “Check Inn to Christmas,” “The Christmas Carousel” and “A Christmas Cookie Catastrophe.” “Stop the Wedding,” “The Last Bridesmaid” and “Dating the Delaneys” have been among Boston’s other Hallmark projects; she also has made films for Lifetime occasionally.

Additionally, Boston has had a recurring role on “SEAL Team” that enabled her to keep working while she was in later stages of her pregnancy, since her character on the series – Hannah Oliver – also was expecting, with high-school friend and Bravo Team member Sonny Quinn (A.J. Buckley) the father of her child.

Q: Is Mariska Hargitay doing anything besides “Law & Order: SVU”? Some actors take other roles in the off-season.

A: Det. Olivia Benson keeps Mariska Hargitay busy enough as it is.

Hargitay has played Benson on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” since all the way back in 1999, but she also plays her on the various spinoffs, related shows and even a few comedy shows that bring her in for a gag.

She’s appeared on three of the “Law & Order” spinoffs — most recently doing 13 episodes of “Organized Crime,” which features Benson’s old partner, Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). She’s also done two of the “One Chicago” shows, “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Fire,” thereby merging the two televised universes created by mega-producer Dick Wolf.

Her character is, of course, deadly serious, but Hargitay has been able to have fun with it a few times. She appeared in character on the short-lived Pop TV comedy series “Nightcap” in 2017, and then in 2019 on the more venerable “Saturday Night Live.”

It’s possible Hargitay feels like she already showed her range before joining “SVU.” She appeared in dozens of TV shows and a few movies before landing the role.

For example, she did a lengthy arc on the prime-time soap “Falcon Crest” in 1988, starred in the short-lived sitcom “Can’t Hurry Love” in 1995, and did an arc on the smashhit med show “ER” in 1997.

The big-screen roles were less prestigious, though she broke into the scene in a big way in 1984, with a role in the cult-classic gross-out film “Ghoulies” (1984).

Q: Why haven’t I seen Michael Fassbender in anything lately?

A: Because you haven’t been keeping up on your American Samoa soccer history, apparently. And also because he’s been taking a bit of a break.

Michael Fassbender’s (“Steve Jobs,” 2015) only on-screen role in the past four years has been in the independently produced sports comedy “Next Goal Wins,” about the American Samoan soccer team.

But in his defense, that came after a lengthy run of mega-budget movies, which included being part of three huge franchises. He was young Magneto in the X-Men universe starting with “First Class” (2011), he became part of the Alien franchise via its prequel, 2012’s “Prometheus,” and he starred in 2016’s “Assassin’s Creed,” based on the smash-hit video game.

After all that, it seems he wanted to take a breather. But now, having caught his breath, he’s about to be very high-profile again.

In just a few weeks, Netflix will release “The Killer,” an assassin drama directed by action auteur David Fincher (“Se7en,” 1995), with Fassbender as the titular assassin.

And he’s also reportedly going to appear in the next film by rom-com queen Nancy Meyers (“Something’s Gotta Give,” 2003), currently in pre-production with no release date projected.

These are on top of at least eight other projects he’s at least rumored to be working on.

Caught on tape: ‘AFV’ nears 900 episodes with premiere of 34th season

With countless hosts, more than 850 episodes and decades of history on broadcast television, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” returns with new episodes when Season 34 premieres Sunday, Oct. 1, on ABC.

As we prepare for the return of funny animal videos and pranks gone wrong, Season 1 of this series — the network’s longest-running prime-time entertainment show — often feels like it aired in the not-so-distant past. “AFV,” however, is now legally old enough to drive, to vote, to rent a car — and no matter how it changes and grows, it tickles our funny bones just the same way.

What started as a television special in 1989 (itself based on the Japanese variety show “Fun TV with Kato-chan and Kenchan”) quickly became a regular weekly series, as Bob Saget (“Full House”) took the lead as host and welcomed American viewers to the quirky world of “AFV.” Since its inception, the show’s format has stayed mostly the same, shining a spotlight on everyday people as viewers, fans and pranksters alike submit hilarious home videos involving everything from outrageous phys-

ical comedy and wildly intelligent toddlers to “trick shots” gone wrong and marriage proposal mishaps.

The submitted clips are played in front of a live studio audience who then vote on the funniest videos of the week. Each episode, the first palace winner is awarded a cash prize and offered the opportunity to return for the series’ next competition round, where they vie for a much larger prize — now, a purse set at $100,000. This continues until the end of the season, when previous winners compete for even more cash and an exclusive, all-inclusive vacation package.
