Martin Odegaard and Gunners look to kick off London derby with a bang The 2023-24 Premier League season continues as the London derby kicks off at Stamford Bridge this weekend. Chelsea hosts Arsenal, Saturday, Oct. 21, with all Premier League action broadcast live on NBC. After a breakthrough season last year that saw the Gunners win their first 16 games — marking their best start to a campaign, including returning to the Champions League after a six-year absence — Arsenal has looked similarly strong to start the 2023-24 campaign. In fact, they’re already sitting with double digits in points and getting contributions from players collectively. With Arsenal fielding the second-youngest team last season, a significant boost to its squad has been in the midfield position, with newly appointed captain Martin Odegaard a large reason for its newfound success. Since his arrival to the squad from Real Madrid, the immediate impact the Norwegian has displayed can’t be understated. His vision in the midfield has sparked the offence at the right times, providing timely assists for Bukoyo Saka and Leonardo Trossard spreading out the offence and providing the Gunners with a more balanced attacking game. His ability to control the tempo and provide timely balls proves why Arsenal has him as part of its long-term plans, recently signing him to a five-year contract, making him the clubs highest paid player. While Arsenal have been trending upward, the same can’t be said about Chelsea. This season has been nothing short of disappointing as the Blue Devils currently sit in the lower half of the standings, following a season that saw record financial spending. Adding to an already difficult season, coach Mauricio Pochettino has had a difficult time fielding a full-starting 11 squad at any point this season, with injuries to several first-team players, including star captain Reece James. Hoping to continue what has been a great start to the campaign, look for Arsenal and Odegaard to make their mark early, aiming to add another strong and decisive victory into their win column. Tides of crime: Secrets and murder abound in Season 2 of ‘Annika’ It’s Scottish crime with a Scandinavian twist this autumn as Season 2 of the BBC series “Annika” premieres on PBS Masterpiece, Sunday, Oct. 15. An interesting clash of northern European cultures, the two worlds meet seamlessly due to the titular character’s Norwegian roots and the often-folkloric nature of the crimes she encounters at work. The series’ main character, DI Annika Strandhed, has been a hit with audiences across the pond since the original radio series premiered in early January 2017 on the U.K.’s BBC Radio 4. The radio series, titled “Annika Stranded,” wrapped Sept. 4, 2020, but for lovers of the series, the story continues on television, complete with Nicola Walker (“MI-5”) in the role of Annika — no doubt a familiar voice for fans who jumped over from the radio play. Both series follow Strandhed, a former Oslo-based “murder squad” police officer, as she relocates to a remote region of Scotland to head up the country’s first-ever Marine Homicide Unit. Given her dedication to the job and a lifelong love of fast-moving boats, Strandhed seems poised as the perfect fit to lead the new team. That said, her cohort DS Michael McAndrews (Jamie Sives, “Guilt”) has other opinions. McAndrews attended police college with Strandhed, but the two detectives selected career paths that took them in opposite directions, causing them to drift apart. While

McAndrews is clearly supportive of Strandhed and finds her to be a very intelligent leader, he still believes himself to have been a better candidate for her position as leader of the MHU. Nevertheless, the pair must find a way to work together — thankfully McAndrews’ duties as head diver keep him busy and away from Strandhed much of the time. Working alongside the two team leads are DC Blair Ferguson (Katie Leung, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” 2005), who provides data analysis and tech support for the team; DS Tyrone Clarke (Ukweli Roach, “Blindspot”), a former drug unit investigator who prefers to work alone; and DCI Diane Oban (Kate Dickie, “The Green Knight,” 2021), who oversees all police proceedings within the precinct and often has the final say on how the MHU operates. Joining the MHU this season is DC Harper Weston (played by Varada Sethu, “Jurassic World Dominion,” 2022), a motorcycle-riding trainee who, given her youth, may act as a second person to provide Strandhed a bit of insight regarding her daughter, Morgan (Sylvie Furneaux, “Red Rose”). This guiding role has previously only been played by Ferguson, who is of a similar age to Weston and only a few years older than Morgan herself. What we do know headed into Season 2 — and there is quite a bit, given that the season (or “series,” as it is referred to in the U.K.) has already premiered on its home channel of BBC One — is that the very first episode centers on a “brutal drowning” death that has been recorded on a mobile phone. When the cellphone is turned in to police and passed over the the MHU, Strandhed and her team jump into action to try to identify and catch the murderer responsible.

Simon Cowell OF AMERICA’S GOT TALENT ON NBC Q: Was Simon Cowell one of the original judges on “America’s Got Talent”?
A: No, but he still played a major part in the NBC series from the start, since he created it. (He also has been an executive producer of the show from the beginning.) Piers Morgan, Brandy Norwood and David Hasselhoff made up the judging panel for the first season in 2006, with Regis Philbin as the host. At the time, Cowell was intending to make a similar contest for British television, but some complications ultimately held that up and he turned his attention to making a U.S. version. The result was a summer hit for NBC, and it also jump-started the originally planned British edition, which premiered in 2007 and also continues. From there, the concept expanded even more, with versions still being done in Canada, Cambodia, France, India and Spain (among other locations). A judge on the British version from the start, Cowell became an on-air “America’s Got Talent” presence beginning with the 11th season – this year has marked its 18th round – but he wasn’t present for the live episodes during Season 15, due to a back injury. Substitute judges were enlisted initially, but the number of judges then was reduced from four to three in Cowell’s absence, with Howie Mandel (who has been with the show since Season 5), Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara holding forth with those duties. Actually, Klum also missed some of Season 15 due to illness, with Vergara’s fellow “Modern Family” alum Eric Stonestreet filling in for her.

And she had a supporting role on the Australian surfer-themed drama “Barons,” which was cancelled by CW this summer after just four episodes. She can get these sorts of roles now thanks to the fame she built in her ‘80s heyday when she was appearing in stylish, cool and talked-about projects such as “Say Anything” (1989) and “River’s Edge” (1986). That plus (let’s be honest) a pretty distinctive name, a famous pedigree (she’s the daughter of ‘60s folk-pop star Donovan) and a series of relationships with edgy rock stars that got her into the tabloids, meant that in the late ‘80s, Ione Skye was a pretty big deal.
As is almost always the case, that kind of fame doesn’t last. And while she lost some of her buzz, she didn’t lose her impeccable taste in roles. She appeared — now as a supporting star — in some of the coolest movies of the ‘90s, such as the high-concept anthology movie “Four Rooms” (1995), the small indie picture “But I’m a Cheerleader” that only later was adopted as a gay-cinema classic, and the zeitgeist-grabbing “Wayne’s World” (1992). That has continued into the present day. Her roles in “Beef” and, a few years ago, on “Arrested Development,” mean she’s still a fixture in buzzy projects.

Q: What has the actor who played Linda on “Blue Bloods” been doing since she was written off the show?
A: Amy Carlson (“Blue Bloods,” “Third Watch”) has been pounding the pavement again — virtually, at least. After [six-year-old spoiler alert] her “Blue Bloods” character was killed off in 2017, Carlson is back to chasing supporting roles, indie films and shorts, much like she did earlier in her career. Most notably, she did a two-episode arc as Jackie Ward on “FBI: Most Wanted” (another police procedural) in the 2020-21 season, and two episodes of the sci-fi drama “The Society” in 2019. But the process of finding roles has changed a bit since the days before she was a prime-time fixture. She posted a refreshingly frank message on Instagram, saying she’s discovered that actors now are required to record their own audition tapes at home, whereas earlier (particularly pre-pandemic), they had casting directors helping them to record their audition performances. “Early in my career, casting directors guided me, taught me and helped me do my best work. I miss casting directors.” Fans are still reeling from her “Blue Bloods” departure — judging by the comments she received on that post and everything else she’s put on social media — so it seems like just a matter of time before Carlson finds another full-time gig.

From director Raoul Peck (“I Am Not Your Negro,” 2016), the 2023 documentary “Silver Dollar Road” premieres Friday, Oct. 20, on Prime Video. Having premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year in September, this documentary draws upon reporting done by Lizzie Presser for the nonprofit organization ProPublica, following one Black family’s battle to save the land they’ve owned for generations. Reels family members have inhabited their waterfront property for over 100 years, but as the property-hungry land developers began to endlessly harass them, the once-picturesque homestead became a symbol for the ever-growing wealth and racial discrepancies across the county. “More than a century ago, a generation removed from slavery, the Reels family acquired a 65-acre plot of coastal land in North Carolina,” a recent article by Vanity Fair shares. “They built it up over generations into a haven for Black Americans in the South, a welcoming and safe community rich with outdoor resources and social activities. ...
