Hughes vs. McDavid: Devils, Oilers face off in ‘Prime Monday Night Hockey’ matchup
The 2024-25 NHL season continues with another “Prime Monday Night Hockey” matchup featuring the New Jersey Devils as they head to Edmonton, Monday, Nov. 4, to take on Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. The matchup airs exclusively on Prime Video.
The Devils enter the season with a renewed sense of optimism as new head coach Sheldon Keefe looks to continue building off the tremendous growth and development many of the young Devils players have been making over the past few seasons.
A key player to watch for the Devils this year will be superstar Jack Hughes, who, despite sustaining a shoulder injury last season, managed to put up 27 goals and 42 assists in 62 games before the team shut him down for the remainder of the year.
Heading into this season, Hughes’ speed, vision and elite puck handling continue to make him one of the most dynamic players in the NHL who is slowly turning into one of the NHL’s top offensive studs.
Meanwhile, the high-powered Oilers are coming off a season that saw Connor McDavid reach 132 points (32 goals, 100 assists) and Leon Draisaitl hit 106 points (41 goals, 65 assists) — the campaign also included a trip to the Stanley Cup final for Edmonton.
With both teams boasting high offensive game plans, the Devils will need to establish their presence early to keep up with the Oilers’ elite firepower.

Mexican film on an epic scale: GarciaRulfo, Huerta star in ‘Pedro Paramo’
Anyone who has ever visited Mexico (or watched a travel show set in the country) already knows that it is an ancient and dynamic land teeming with good food, colorful tapestries and a rich culture devoted to honoring the dead. While many non-Mexicans may have been introduced to its culture through American films such as “Coco” (2017) and “The Mask of Zorro” (1998) or the artsy biographical drama “Frida” (2002), Mexico has its own vibrant cinema history, which was celebrated by Netflix with a news release announcing “Pedro Paramo” this past August.
To be released just four days after Mexico’s Day of the Dead observances, “Pedro Paramo” sets the tone for the country’s next holiday: Revolution Day. At once a stunning visual feast and an epic tale of one man’s complicated family history, “Pedro Paramo” premieres Wednesday, Nov. 6, on Netflix.
Based on the 1955 novel of the same name by late Mexican author Juan Rulfo, “Pedro Paramo” follows the titular character’s son, Juan Preciado (Tenoch Huerta, “The Forever Purge,” 2021), as he promises his dying mother that he will return to Comala, the town where he was born, to find the father he never knew. Along the way, he discovers that the remote town is not the prosperous hub he had
been led to believe it was, but rather a ghost town in every sense of the word.
Driven on his quest by a desire to fill in the missing pieces of his family history, Juan encounters all manner of people — some living, others long dead — who help him to understand the nuances of the hope (and the lack thereof) attached to family values, complicated blood ties and personal goals.
Adapted from the source material by writer Mateo Gil (“Vanilla Sky,” 2001), “Pedro Paramo” is the first feature directed by four-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (“Brokeback Mountain,” 2005). The 133-minute, Spanish-language film made its official debut at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where it was described as “a mesmerizing story of desire, corruption and inheritance.”
Starring “The Lincoln Lawyer’s” Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in the film’s titular role, “Pedro Paramo” also stars Mayra Batalla (“Huesera: The Bone Woman,” 2022), Ilse Salas (“The Good Girls,” 2018), Hector Kotsifakis (“The Inmate”), Giovanna Zacarias (“On the Road,” 2012), Ari Brickman (“Crime Diaries: The Candidate”), Gabriela Nunez (“Prayers for the Stolen,” 2021), Dolores Heredia (“Vantage Point,” 2008) and Noé Hernandez (“La Reina del Sur”).
In the official TIFF description of Netflix’s newest film, Colombian-Canadian festival programmer Diana Cadavid writes that “in Comala, nothing is as it seems.
“Juan speaks with someone, only to be informed that person has died,” Cadavid’s TIFF synopsis continues. “Deserted streets are suddenly teeming with life. Figures dissolve into soil or are washed away in a deluge. The closer Juan gets to locating his father, the more the realm of the dead eclipses that of the living, while Pedro Paramo’s infamy as a merciless tyrant only burgeons. Will Juan’s spirit be absorbed into the phantasmagorical tapestry of this place where the voices of those who have passed forever echo in the wind?”

Kirsten Dunst
OF CIVIL WAR ON HBO
Q: I recently watched the movie “Civil War” on HBO, and I was impressed with Kirsten Dunst. I know she was a child actress. When did she begin acting?
A: Kirsten Dunst was six years old at the time she appeared in a “Saturday Night Live” sketch and filmed the Woody Allen-directed segment of the 1989 anthology “New York Stories,” her first movie, but she had been working in TV commercials since the age of three. She also was in the 1990 film “The Bonfire of the Vanities” as Tom Hanks’ daughter and was in a 1993 episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” but many people recall the first time they saw her as being in “Interview With the Vampire,” the 1994 movie of the Anne Rice novel that teamed Dunst with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
From there, work opportunities continued to flow for her. She played the younger version of March sister Amy in the 1994 version of the much-filmed Louisa May Alcott story “Little Women,” she had a considerable hit with the 1995 fantasy-adventure “Jumanji,” and she joined the NBC drama “ER” in its third season as a young prostitute protected by George Clooney’s Dr. Doug Ross. “Wag the Dog,” “Small Soldiers” and “Drop Dead Gorgeous” were among the movies that rounded out the 1990s for Dunst.
“The Virgin Suicides” (1999) and “Bring It On” (2000) continued to affirm her versatility, and her portrayal of Mary Jane Watson in the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man blockbusters during the 2000s put her fame on an even higher plane. After those, more adult roles became her norm, not only in movies — “Marie Antoinette” (2006), “Melancholia” (2011) “Bachelorette” (2012) etc. — but also on television, encompassing “Fargo,” in which she starred with her then-husband-to-be Jesse Plemons, and “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”

Mikey Day
Q: Is Mikey Day going to be doing more “Is It Cake”?
A: Netflix hasn’t announced yet whether Mikey Day’s (“Saturday Night Live”) reality cooking show, “Is It Cake?,” will get a fourth season.
It’s a little hard to even speculate. Viewership of the show’s third season was definitely down — Netflix reported that the second season got roughly 21 million views in the six months after its release, whereas the third season only got nine million.
But nine million views could still be enough to earn a fourth round. It seems pretty inexpensive to make, with just one set, one full-time cast member (Day) and relatively modest prizes — the Season 3 winner took home $65,000. As a comparison, a single episode of Netflix’s historical drama “Bridgerton” costs $7 million to make.
Perhaps the biggest question is how much longevity there is in the show’s premise: each episode, a group of amateur bakers make

cakes that look like everyday objects — suitcases, bowling pins, anything but cakes — and try to fool a panel of celebrity judges. Does Netflix think there’s another season’s worth of reality drama in there? There’s a theoretically infinite number of items that can be turned into cakes. If it does come back, it seems likely that Day will come with it. His situation hasn’t changed much — all along, he’s been doing this show off the side of his desk, so to speak, while continuing to be a featured player in “Saturday Night Live.”

Q: What’s Hugh Laurie’s next project? I was sad to see “Avenue 5” go so soon.
A: Hugh Laurie (“House”) is working on two different projects at the moment, but there are question marks hanging over both.
It was announced in February 2023 that he would appear in the third season of Apple TV+’s spy drama “Tehran,” but nothing’s been heard of that since, even though the second season was released all the way back in the summer of 2022.
Filming was almost certainly delayed by the Hollywood strikes (though producers reportedly signed an “interim agreement” with the actors union to film while the strike was going on), but that doesn’t totally explain the absence of news since.
Meanwhile, it was announced that an even older series, BBC and AMC’s “The Night Manager,” is finally getting a second season. Laurie was the villain in the first season in 2016, who [eight-year-old spoiler alert] was apprehended at the end.
When the BBC announced the list of returning actors, he wasn’t included. But it did say he’d be involved as an executive producer. So as things stand, we won’t see him on screen, but the situation has the potential for at least a surprise cameo.
Another thing that offers hope of a reprise: the BBC announced that his character’s son in “The Night Manager,” played by Noah Jupe (“A Quiet Place,” 2018), will be returning for the second season. So, Laurie’s character will, at least be part of the conversation.

BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT
Catch a glimpse of “the great beyond” during the Season 1 finale of the fascinating series “Live From the Other Side with Tyler Henry,” airing Tuesday, Nov. 5, on Netflix.
Moderated by Amanda Kloots (“The Talk”), this weekly series offers live interviews with famed clairvoyant Tyler Henry. By connecting patrons to their deceased family, friends and loved ones as a medium, Henry found widespread fame as he traveled across the country in the TLC series “Hollywood Medium With Tyler Henry” and soon gained worldwide notoriety, earning his first series with Netflix: “Life After Death with Tyler Henry.”
Only 28 years old, Henry has worked with clients such as the Kardashian family, Megan Fox (“Transformers,” 2007) and the late Alan Thicke (“Growing Pains”), earning himself a client waitlist that is quickly growing towards its millionth name as he claims the title of the “most sought-after medium in the world” (per Netflix).
The clairvoyant is now tackling his next project, offering his unique skills to celebrity clients during live, hour-long conversations. According to the streamer, “‘Live from the Other Side with Tyler Henry’ [invites] celebrity guests for emotional readings that might help them find hope, healing and long-awaited answers from their loved ones who’ve died.” Henry has no idea who his guest might be prior to the cameras rolling, meaning that each and every encounter is a surprise — one he can’t prepare for ahead of time, ensuring that Henry has no preconceived notions before meeting his next client.
“I liken my job to that of a mailman,”
Henry told Tudum. “In the sense that I don’t write the letters, I just deliver the message. My priority is to ensure that I’m doing the message justice. I’m not responsible for what I get, but I do feel responsible for how I deliver it. I try to be tactful, diplomatic and thoughtful of the person’s feelings, but it’s very much an interpretive process.”
Featuring mind-boggling and heart-wrenching conversations with the likes of Chrishell Stause (“Selling Sunset”), makeup artist Chris Appleton, Nina Parker (“Friday Night Vibes”), Billy Porter (“Pose”), comedian Nikki Glaser (“FBoy Island”) and media personality Harry Jowsey (“Perfect Match”), Season 1 of “Live From the Other Side with Tyler Henry” concludes Tuesday, Nov. 5, on Netflix.
