Another iconic English Premier League matchup takes to the pitch as football giant Liverpool gets set to host their rival, Manchester United. Kicking off Sunday, Dec. 17, at Anfield Stadium in Anfield, Liverpool, England, in what promises to be another historic showdown, full match coverage airs live on ESPN. In a season that’s been full of highs and lows, Liverpool currently commands a stronghold in the top half of the Premier League standings, while Manchester United continues to make its push to solidify a spot in the top 10.

Historically, fixtures between these two clubs have always been full of drama, intensity and highlight-reel moments, with Liverpool coming out on top in a decisive 7-0 victory the last time they clashed.

For the Red Devils, one individual who has been catching the spotlight is none other than 26-yearold Marcus Rashford.

While the English native may be struggling in the first half of this season with only one goal in 11 appearances (as of press time), the chance of him remaining in less than stellar form for the remainder of the year would certainly be out of character — something Manchester United will be hoping can be the difference-maker against Liverpool.

Lidia’s life: Celebrity chef Bastianich reflects on career with ‘Culinary Jubilee’ Despite its ties to culture, religious practices, family economics, environmental concerns or political statements, food has a distinct way of bringing people together and encouraging conversation. Few people know this better than chef, author, restaurateur and TV personality Lidia Bastianich, whose catchphrase, “Tutti a tavola a mangiare” — or “Everyone to the table to eat,” in English — has united people for the past 25 years.

Best known for her countless shows and specials on public television during the past three decades, PBS releases an up-close-andpersonal look into the life and work of the celebrated chef; “25 Years with Lidia: A Culinary Jubilee” premieres Monday, Dec. 18.

In honor of this quarter-century milestone in her career, Bastianich welcomed the opportunity to speak with me about her childhood, her career, her own personal relationship to food and culture, and the moments that have meant the most to her throughout her journey thus far.

Caught in what was no doubt a rare moment at her home in Long Island, N.Y., Bastianich joins our video call clad in a vibrant pink sweater and scarf that provide a cheerful contrast to the white bookcases and potted palm behind her. Easy to see why North American audiences have been captivated by her for 25 years, Bastianich begins sharing memories of where her close kinship with food began.

“My grandmother used to make a soup [I loved],” Bastianich reminisces. “It’s called yota, and it’s unique to the region that I

come from, [Pula, Istria], which is right on the border in [what] now is Croatia. ... It’s a bean and pasta soup, but instead of the pasta, she would put in sauerkraut, and I loved it.”

While this may be one of her most formative childhood food experiences, the association between food and family was just beginning for young Bastianich. Now 76 years old, the celebrity chef is quick to note that cooking, for her, “goes beyond just nourishing the body.”

“It’s [about] nurturing the person, the soul and the sentiments that come with it,” Bastianich says. “Food is a communicator ... no matter what culture, if you sit down, and you eat each other’s food, somehow doors open. You are accepting that person — through that food — for what they are.”

And there is no denying that this Italian food ambassador knows about people. As PBS’s “25 Years with Lidia” shows through interviews with friends, family and colleagues of hers from throughout the years, Bastianich is an excellent communicator herself and values meaningful, deeply human connections above all else. To support this, the hour-long documentary features moments with fellow chef/restaurateurs Jacques Pepin (“Jacques Pépin Heart & Soul”), Mary Sue Milliken (“Too Hot Tamales”), Elizabeth Falkner (“The Next Iron Chef”) and Geoffrey Zakarian (“The Kitchen”). Perhaps the most surprising appearance in “25 Years with Lidia,” though, is that of celebrated actor and fellow Astorian Christopher Walken (“Pulp Fiction,” 1994).

“I came [to the United States] at 12 years old, as an immigrant, and we lived in Astoria, Queens. ... Right across the street was Walkens’ Bakery,” explains Bastianich as she elaborates on the sense of community among immigrants to New York City at the time.

OF RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER ON CBS/FREEFORM Q: When actors like Burl Ives and Fred Astaire narrated such holiday specials as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” were their characters supposed to look like them?

A: Most definitely, though the format also allowed creative liberties to be taken in the seasonal classics made by producers Arthur Rankin Jr, and Jules Bass. When you look at the character Sam the Snowman in “Rudolph” (being shown on CBS and Freeform this season) and you compare that to the actual image of Oscar-winning talent Ives, there’s little question that the character was modeled physically on that actor. That also owes to Ives’ performances of such songs as “A Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Silver and Gold” on the soundtrack, where the image certainly relates to the musical success Ives already had had by the time the special first aired in 1964.

Similarly, the mailman who tells the story in the 1970 show “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” (an annual ABC attraction lately) is meant to resemble iconic actor-singer-dancer Astaire, right down to his wiry physical build. Though Mickey Rooney voiced Santa in that program, Father Christmas has such a traditional look, the resulting image was sort of a hybrid of that and Rooney’s own appearance.

Other examples of veteran talents whose likenesses were used for their animated counterparts in Rankin/Bass shows included Jimmy Durante in “Frosty the Snowman,” Shirley Booth in “The Year Without a Santa Claus,” Angela Lansbury in “The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow,” Ethel Merman in “Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July” and Danny Kaye in the Easter-themed “Here Comes Peter Cottontail.”

Q: Is “SEAL Team” officially over? What’s David Boreanaz doing now?

A: Actually it’s not officially over yet, but it will be soon. After a few false scares, it seems that “SEAL Team” is actually canceled this time, ending with Season 7 next year.

That season went into production this month, and so the thing that star David Boreanaz (previously of “Bones” fame) is doing now is more “SEAL Team.”

Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) is on a dangerous quest. Outrunning monsters and outwitting gods, he must journey across America to return Zeus’ (Lance Reddick) master bolt and stop an all-out war. With the help of his quest mates Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri), Percy’s journey will lead him closer to the answers he seeks. Based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan.

I really feel for you and your fellow fans of “SEAL Team” — CBS has put you through so much. First, CBS said it wasn’t going to renew “SEAL Team” after Season 4. Then it said it would keep it going, but exclusively on their streaming service, Paramount+. Then it said it would air Season 5 on CBS after all, but only the first four episodes. But now, with the strikes interrupting the production of new content, CBS has decided to broadcast the whole fifth season. (There was even talk of

a feature-length movie at one point, but that idea has since been dropped.)

All this is to say that, as you suggest, the question of whether “SEAL Team” is “over” is more complicated than it sounds.

Indeed, if CBS decides to air the sixth and seventh seasons after they debut on Paramount+, this canceled show could produce “new” episodes (new to some viewers, at least) for years to come.

A: Xochitl Gomez (she pronounces it SO-chee, for anyone who wants to know) debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” playing America Chavez. And Marvel seems to have big plans for her.

So, to answer your second question first, one of her next projects is “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the big Marvel teamup movie planned for 2027 (Marvel has plans stretching out to the 2030s).

At least, it’s supposed to be.

That was the plan back in the pre-strike days of last spring.

But the delays resulting from the combined writers and actors strikes that followed have thrown all of Marvel’s carefully laid plans out of whack.

The town’s residents belong to one of three groups: the Hicks, the Skids and the Hockey Players. Constantly feuding over seemingly trivial matters that often end up getting sorted out with fists, the residents — including Wayne (Jared Keeso), Daryl (Nathan Dales), Dan (K. Trevor Wilson) and Katy (Michelle Mylett) — sort through all of life’s many problems.

“Lego Masters” heads to the Hollywood hills for the holidays, when the two-night special event “Lego Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular” airs Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 18 and 19, on Fox. Hosted by “Lego Masters” frontman Will Arnett (the voice of Batman in “The Lego Movie,” 2014) and judged by returning “brickmasters,” senior design manager at Lego, Amy Corbett, and Lego set designer Jamie Berard, this holiday special promises to “shake it up like a snow globe, with unpredictable twists and surprises as special guests [...] compete in jaw-dropping, holiday-themed challenges for charities of their choice,” according to Fox. The challenges, of course, all consist of larger-than-life Lego builds, closely following the format of the original show.
