Laura Vaessen of Al Cioni Ford participates in dealer conference

Laura Vaessen of Al Cioni Ford in Granville, participated in a four-day dealer executive conference in Dearborn, Michigan. The conference is sponsored by Ford Motor Company.

Ford executive managers were involved with dealers throughout the seminar and highlighted programs that Ford provides to support dealership actions.

Dealers visited a variety of facilities to discover the history and legacy of the Ford Motor Company.

“Attending this seminar gave me a great feeling about being part of the Ford Motor Company family,” Vaessen said. “It helped me better understand how closely the company and the dealers are connected in doing a good job for the people who drive the products we sell and service.”

Vaessen has spent the past several years learning the many facets of the family business.

provide the legion with a transcript to verify academic achievement, GPA score and a copy of the extracurricular activity list of the individual applying for this scholarship.

The application form also requires the applicant to complete a personal essay on the topic: “What patriotism means to me.” This year’s scholarship deadline is April 6.

Post 180 members review the applications in April and determine which applicant has the highest overall qualifications.

In May, the applicant who will receive the scholarship is announced and a check is sent directly to the college’s financial aid office. The monetary amount is drawn down from the student’s college account to cover the tuition and fees of the applicant.

The applicant must provide documentation from the institution at

which he or she is actually enrolled for the coming semester before funds are released. An official list of the courses being pursued for the following semester by the college is sufficient documentation. Dropping out of the certified classes without sufficient cause, such as medical necessity or other hardship, would require the student to refund the award to the post.

The scholarship applications are available from the Guidance Counselor at Putnam County High School or from the post’s Americanism Officer, Ron Bluemer.

Applications, with the required essay and academic documents, should be sent to Ron Bluemer-Americanism Office at 134 Cleveland Circle Granville, IL 61326 or Doug Ossola-Adjutant at 315 W. Main, Granville, IL 61326. For any questions, call Bluemer at 815-339-1082.

Ottawa cheese vendor to continue tradition

Chuck’s Cheese founder Chuck Geiger recently retired, but his cheese spreads still can be found in grocery store coolers.

Gina and Allen Stoudt recently purchased the business, not wanting to see an Ottawa favorite cease production because of Geiger’s retirement.

Outside the Illinois Valley, the cheese spreads are available in the Quad Cities, Peoria and Bloomington, and Gina Stoudt said she plans to further expand availability.

Locally, Chuck’s Cheese can be purchased at Handy Foods and Spaces, Ottawa; D&S Foods, Marseilles; Seneca Food Mart, Seneca; HyVee, Peru; and the Norway Store, Sheridan.

Geiger also worked with groups to sell his cheese for fundraising, and Stoudt plans to continue and grow that as well. She also plans to establish a website with online sales.

The same flavors will be available:

original, garlic jalapeño, horseradish, garden vegetable and Swiss almond.

According to a 1999 The Daily Times article, Geiger’s one-man business, which was located at 1881 1/2 W. Norris Drive, then shipped cheese to 22 outlets in a 50-mile radius. Geiger, who began making cheese in the late 1980s in addition to his full-time job as a CSX engineer, told the The Daily Times he used a blend of various cheeses, added flavoring and spices, mixed it up and packaged it. The article noted Geiger was awarded several ribbons from the Illinois State Fair.

Geiger bought the original recipe from the late Harold Pellegrini, of Marseilles, who used to sell the spread to Geiger when he was one of the owners of the shuttered Butcher Block in downtown Ottawa.

Geiger’s longtime companion, Marlene Stillwell, said he loved the business and was happy to see it continue locally.

Illinois Valley Community College to host Syrian art exhibit

‘Stamps of Hope’ on display from March 27 to April 14

Shaw Local News Network

Illinois Valley Community College will be hosting an art exhibit by Syrian Refugee Artisan titled “Stamps of Hope” from March 27 to April 14 in room CTC 124. The exhibit will be open to the public each day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a self-guided tour.

At noon and 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 27, Rihab Sawah will present in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre on the war, the artists and their art. Sparkling grape juice and light hors d’oeuvres will be served in the evening.

Sawah, assistant professor at Lincoln Land Community College, has been bridging the artwork to the U.S. from Jordan. She said the paintings and drawings capture the hopes and dreams of those displaced by the Syrian war that began in 2011.

Some of the artists used pieces of canvas cut from tent fabric for their work, while others used materials such as newspapers and cardboard. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights and International Relief and Development Organization noticed the art and began to provide professional art materials.

The exhibit and presentation are free and open to the public. All art is for sale, with prices ranging from $25 to $250. All proceeds go directly to the artists.

The ongoing traveling exhibit is sponsored by the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education. Call Amanda Cook Fesperman at 815-224-0203 for more information or to buy art.

From Putnam County Rotary: Join us for Rotary Ag Night March 30

To the Editor:

Hello Putnam County Record readers

I want to talk agriculture! The definition of agriculture is ”the science or practice of cultivating soil, producing crops and raising livestock and in varying degrees, the reparation and marketing of the resulting products.” But I think when you look around our farming communities, it is so much more. Growing up in Standard I used to ride my bike to my friends Priscilla, Nola and Judy, who all lived “out in the country.” As I pedaled, I would watch the fields being tilled, planted and harvested by the hard working farmers, who worked everyday to provide for their families and contribute to the agricultural heritage of Putnam County. Those men, the Hollys, Naumans, Edgerleys, Bernardis, Mudges, Toedters,

WRITE TO US

Bruches, Hopkins, Gehms and Clausens all waved as I rode my bike past their fields. How hard they worked, day after day; it seemed as if they were always in those fields in their big tractors doing what their ancestors had done before.

Once the consolidation came, I met more “farm kids”: Boyle, Carr, Holmbeck, Wilson, Alleman, Glenn, Griffith, Jessen, Boggio, Biagi, Knapp, Brizgis, Brown, Pletsch, Haws, Schorn and Chambers, to name a few.

What a great childhood I had growing up in our small rural county. The strong agricultural heritage of Putnam County is something we can all be proud of. I hope you have visited the Historical Society Ag Museum that honors that heritage. The Moews sign shines bright every night on the building housing donated equipment and artifacts.

Submitted letters must include the writer’s name, city of residence and telephone number.

MAIL LETTERS TO : It’s Your Write, 426 Second Street

As I have said before, Putnam County Rotary was started by farmers and businessmen who wanted to give back to their communities. Every Thursday night those busy men took time off to go to Rotary meetings to make our county a better place. I am proud to be a Rotary member and I am excited to say that after a three-year hiatus due to COVID we are once again hosting Rotary Ag Night.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at PCHS, we will be celebrating the rich agricultural heritage we can be so proud of by bringing back this fun event. I am happy to announce that Marquis Energy will be presenting the program on not just what they do but their future plans for the facility.

I am hoping to see attendees who are not just farmers, whose families are our farming history, but businessmen from our local banks, County

Board members, mayors and council members and anyone else who is interested in attending.

FOOD

Chorizo enlivens wintry Spanish white bean stew

In Spain’s rugged Asturias region, winter winds coming off the Atlantic demand rib-sticking meals that make the most of preserved foods.

That often means fabada asturiana, a homey mix of cured meats, dried beans and alliums slowly simmered with various cuts of smoked pork. It could spend half a day on the stove, but in this recipe from our book “Tuesday Nights Mediterranean,” which features weeknight-friendly meals from the region, we make a quick-and-easy version that comes together in 30 minutes.

We pared back on the meats, using

only chorizo and ham, both of which lend deep flavor to the broth. The dish gets its name from fabas, the large beans traditionally used, but we found that canned white beans worked well. We especially liked the relatively large size and creamy texture of cannellinis, but great northern and navy beans are fine, too.

A pinch of saffron adds a Spanish flavor and fragrance, while giving the stew an alluring golden hue.

Be sure to not overcook the chorizo and ham after adding them to the sautéed onion mixture. If the pieces begin to sear or brown, they’ll be chewy in the finished dish. Cook only until the chorizo begins to release some of its fat.

Spanish Chorizo, Ham and White Bean Stew 30minutes,4servings

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

6 medium garlic cloves, chopped

1 teaspoon saffron threads

Kosher salt and ground black pepper

8 ounces Spanish chorizo, casings removed, halved and thinly sliced

8 ounces ham steak, cut into ½-inch cubes

1½ quarts low-sodium chicken broth

Three 15½-ounce cans white beans, rinsed and drained

3 bay leaves

4 scallions, thinly sliced

Warmed crusty bread, to serve

In a large pot over medium, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the onion, garlic, saffron, ¼ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is slightly softened, 5 to 8 minutes.

Add the chorizo and ham, then cook, stirring, just until the chorizo begins to release its fat, about 1 minute. Stir in the broth, beans and bay. Bring to a simmer over medium-high, then reduce to medium and cook, stirring occasionally and adjusting the heat as needed to maintain a simmer, 10 to 15 minutes.

Remove and discard the bay, then stir in the scallions. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Serve with bread.
