Christopher Lobingier Chapter Remembered program presented SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
Chief Senachwine Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter members held their Oct. 6 meeting at the Henry Public Library. Following refreshments, Regent pro tem Diana Williamson called the meeting to order. Prospective member Paula Briggs from Sparland was welcomed by chapter members. Williamson thanked members who cleaned gravestones for the NSDAR Day of Service, recognizing the 133rd year of founding the National DAR on Oct. 11, 1890. From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, members will be attending the celebration of life for deceased member Wendy Welch at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse. After the usual items of business and reports by chairmen, the program, “Christopher Lobingier Chapter Remembered,” was presented by Chairman Nancy Gillfillan. Using a metal representation of a tree, Gillfillan gave a brief history of the accomplishments of the predecessor chapter in the area. Then after calling upon members to read the personal histories of the 12 Lobingier Charter/founding members, Gillfillan directed the placement of name tags on the metal tree. Participants received a booklet containing information on the earlier chapter and on the intrepid women who began a chapter in Henry that preserved the history of their Revolutionary War patriots and began 58 years of service in the community. Gillfillan encouraged attendance Sat-

Rotarians to share purple balloons for World Polio Day SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
One generation ago, a virus even more lethal than COVID-19 had crippled or taken the lives of more than 350,000 children each year – 1,000 children each day. That virus was known as polio, a fast-spreading disease that could kill or paralyze a child within just a few hours of contact. Rotarians took on the challenge of eradicating the world of this devastating disease. Partnering with world health organizations, volunteers embarked upon a mission to vaccinate every child in every country and remote region of the world, sometimes at great risk to themselves.
Today, there are less than 100 cases per year, concentrated in Afghanistan and Pakistan largely because of cultural and political barriers to immunization. The threat remains as the virus could again spread from that region, and as newborns must continue to be immunized throughout the world. Rotary and its partners remain vigilant to not allow a resurgence that would threaten all children of the world. Each October, Rotary International observes Oct. 24 as World Polio Day in recognition of the efforts made and still required, to finally end the threat of polio. As noted by world leaders everywhere, the world is “this close” to reaching that goal. During the week of Word Polio Day
observance, Putnam County Rotarians will share purple balloons and information at each of Putnam County’s six local libraries. Balloons will be available on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Granville and Standard libraries, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at McNabb Library, on Thursday Oct. 26, at Hennepin Library, and on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Condit Library in Putnam and at Magnolia Library. Stop in while supplies last. Why purple? As Rotarians immunize children in remote areas, volunteers paint the children’s pinkies purple to ensure all children are reached – coincidentally a welcome “badge of honor” to the children who have received the lifesaving vaccine. To help with this project or for information, email PutnamCountyRotary@ gmail.com.

Rotary Club donates dictionaries to 3rd graders SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
Putnam County third grade students were presented with personal dictionaries Oct. 3, compliments of the Putnam County Rotary Club. Rotarians were on hand to not only distribute the books, but also to challenge the students with word-find games and a guided tour of the other treasures to be found in their dictionaries. Students were eager to try their hand at sign language, and enjoyed finding and learning new words during the presentation. Rotarians also explained the bookplate on which each wrote his or her name, bearing the Rotary “4-way test,” which emphasizes the importance of being truthful, being fair to all concerned and being friendly, while always
acting in a manner that will be beneficial to all concerned … and if students did not know the meaning of the word “beneficial,” they now can look it up. PC Rotary, in partnership with the Putnam County Library, also will make dictionaries available to home-schooled students. Families may contact Rotarian Matt Miller at PC Library’s Hennepin headquarters at 815-339-2038. This marks the project’s 17th year of participation in the Dictionaries Project, a part of Rotary’s worldwide support of literacy and learning. Spanish-English dictionaries are made available as well, for bilingual students. Volunteers are needed for additional literacy projects, including “Rotary Readers” in the primary and elementary schools. To volunteer, email PutnamCountyRotary@ gmail.com.

Lundquist given Outstanding Master Gardener Award contact@shawmedia.com
Steve Lundquist was awarded the Outstanding Master Gardener Award at the State Master Gardener Convention on Sept. 8 in East Peoria. Lundquist joined the Master Gardener Program in 2020. Since that time, he has been instrumental in adding more school programming in the Seeds to Harvest Program, providing education and training, for both youth and adults throughout his four-county service area, and has been involved in building partnerships with outside organizations. He contributes to efforts aimed at obtaining new funding streams used in local programming and is a valuable volunteer and great team member. Lundquist has been a volunteer for the “Seeds to Harvest” program in Marshall and Putnam county schools and is chairman of the Midland Middle School Program, where he participated in all phases of program development. As superintendent of the Marshall-Putnam Fair Horticulture Department, his responsibilities include securing judges,
following requirements and supporting the department throughout the fair. He also judged the 4-H Horticulture Department for the Marshall-Putnam 4-H show. Lundquist developed a presentation on square foot gardening, built a mobile model garden and frequently presents Speakers Bureau workshops throughout the multi-county area at libraries and community garden groups, on a variety of topics including, but not limited to container gardening and vegetable gardening. Lundquist is addressing the need for interactive information booths at the county fair by working with other master gardeners. As a member of the Lake Wildwood Association Wildflower Trails committee, he is involved in planning and selecting sites for more than 1,000 wildflower plugs, working with the local fire department to schedule and conduct controlled burns as well as assembling a volunteer team to plant the plugs in the spring of 2024. Lundquist assists other master gardeners with maintaining garden beds at the county courthouse and fairground and participating in youth Nature Days and prairie planting at the Toluca Jumbo.

tcollins@shawmedia.com Mary Jo Credi was startled when families of five began asking for help – big families used to be a rarity at the Illinois Valley Food Pantry – but even that did not prepare her for the newest totals. The Illinois Valley Food Pantry in La Salle recently tallied its fiscal year data and recorded 55% more first-time clients than last year. Those are people who’ve never sought food assistance before. New clients are a reliable barometer for tough times and a 55% jump suggests times are hard indeed. “It’s getting scary,” said Credi, executive director of the food pantry. “It’s inflation: The high cost of living across the board. You have your utilities, food, gas, auto repairs. Throw in an emergency and the little they had for that month is gone.” It isn’t just first-timers that have risen. Clients receiving unemployment

Continued from page 9 is shaping up to be especially challenging. It isn’t just the Illinois Valley Food Pantry. Other food pantry directors reported their new clients are surging, as well. “Our numbers are increasing every day,” said Bertie Beckman, president of Streatorland Community Food Pantry in Streator. “I’d say it’s up by 40% in the past few months and there are a lot of first-timers.” “We are noticing an increase in people seeking food,” said Mike Paulsen, director of food acquisition for the Western Bureau County Food Pantry. “We have had a 33% increase in new clients.” Jan Martin, executive director of the Hall Township Food Pantry, said the

The Day You Have Been Dreaming Of
• Outdoor Wedding Pergola • Receptions & Showers • Seating Up to 350 • Across From Beautiful Lake Mendota
Brides- and grooms-to-be select people who are near and dear to their hearts to be special parts of their momentous days. So the chance to participate in a friend’s or family member’s wedding is a great honor. A wedding party plays a key role in both the ceremony and reception. Participants do everything from helping couples make decisions to addressing invitations to providing emotional support. As so much is asked of the wedding party — particularly the maid/ matron of honor and bridesmaids — it’s customary to bestow gifts on those people who devoted so much time and effort to the wedding. BEARS 3 AND OUT Bears quarterback Justin Fields walks to the locker room during the second half against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in Chicago.
Justin Fields’ hand injury looms in backdrop of 19-13 loss to Minnesota Vikings, as Bears fall into last place in NFC North.
Three moments that mattered
1
JF1 down: Fields was taken down from behind trying to escape pressure with 10:43 left in the third quarter. Fields was in obvious discomfort and went to the injury tent before leaving for the locker room. Bagent was promptly strip-sacked by Vikings safety Josh Metellus. The fumble was recovered by linebacker Jordan Hicks for a 46-yard touchdown and a 19-6 lead. Fields later was downgraded to out.
2
Thanks for coming: With the Bears driving and 1:31 left in the game, Bagent opted to try to get DJ Moore on a one-on-one on a deep pass toward the left sideline. Bagent was intercepted by cornerback Byron Murphy to kill the momentum and essentially ice the Vikings’ 19-13 win.

3
Gotta capitalize: Fields and the offense were in business after linebacker T.J. Edwards and the defense forced a Kirk Cousins fumble with 2:48 left in the first half, but the Bears were unable to make use of the favorable field position inside the Vikings’ 30-yard line. Three plays into the possession, Fields was intercepted by Hicks. Instead, the Vikings promptly marched down the field for a touchdown with 12 seconds left to take the 12-6 lead.
Three things that worked
1
Bagent for six: After a disastrous start, Bagent generated a nine-play drive that ended in his first career rushing touchdown to make it 19-13 Vikings with 7:46 left. Moore’s two receptions for a combined 42 yards were critical to the drive’s success, and got the Bears within a possession.
2
Moore like it: After a quiet first half, Moore came alive over the final two quarters to finish with five receptions for 51 yards. The stats aren’t eye-popping, but he did take plenty of physical hits and gave his backup QB a chance in a suboptimal situation.
3
Decent showing: The Bears ultimately lost, but the Vikings didn’t exactly Tyson Bagent have an offensive clinic, either. The rushing game had a combined 46 rushing yards, tight end T.J. Hockenson was their most productive receiver with six catches, and the offense only had 220 total yards with 19 points. The front seven sacked Cousins twice and the Vikings were 2 of 13 on third down. It’s fair to wonder if Fields stayed healthy, what could’ve come.
Three things that didn’t
1
First half offense: The Bears should’ve had more than six points at the break. In the opening minute of the second quarter, a promising drive with first-and-goal stalled at the Vikings’ 4-yard line after a Fields sack. Santos converted the field goal. Then, after coaxing a turnover with 1:47 before the half, Fields’ interception halted progress. The offense needed to convert those chances into touchdowns; not to mention, convert third downs. They were 3 of 8 at halftime.
2
No momentum: With 7:03 left in the second quarter, Cousins was sacked and fumbled on a pass attempt by Jaquan Brisker and it appeared to be initially recovered by the Bears in-bounds. After discussion, the refs ruled Cairo Santos they did not field it in-bounds, taking away what would’ve been a short field. The Bears did force an ensuing punt, and later cashed in on a Cairo Santos field goal to tie the game at six, but that could’ve been a huge momentum swing in the Bears’ favor with the game for the taking.
3
Critical spot: Facing fourth-and-3 on the Vikings’ 45-yard line with 4:21 left in the third quarter, coach Matt Eberflus opted to keep his offense out on the field. With Fields out for the game and a 13-point deficit, the aggressiveness fit the situation. The execution, an incomplete Bagent pass on a contested route to Tyler Scott on the boundary, just wasn’t there in a spot they needed to keep the drive alive for points.
What’s next? The Las Vegas Raiders visit the Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday. Kickoff is at Noon.
