Grant part of 177 awards through its Emergency Response Equipment Program SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
Compeer Financial’s Fund for Rural America, the Farm Credit cooperative’s giving program, has granted 177 awards through its Emergency Response Equipment Program, including 15 collaboration grants for shared equipment across multiple departments. Putnam County EMS received a $3,984 grant for radios. These grants are designed to alleviate the financial burden of essential equipment for community emergency response departments serving rural America. The Emergency Response Equipment Collaboration Grant, now in its second year, underscores the importance of teamwork among volunteer fire, rescue and ambulance
departments when responding to emergencies. “We understand that rural departments often pool resources and critical life-saving equipment,” said Karen Schieler, senior corporate giving specialist with Compeer Financial. “The spirit of collaboration is strong among emergency departments within Compeer’s territory, and we aspire to make a positive impact on more lives. First responders selflessly give their all when people are in distress, and these tools and resources will prove invaluable in crucial situations.” In addition to these grants, Compeer Financial completed a cooperative-wide service project in partnership with Operation Gratitude as a thank you to first responders. Team members created more than 4,200 notes of thanks and paracord lanyards to show appreciation for those who serve their communities as first responders. The 2023 Emergency Response Equipment Collaboration Grants offer up to $10,000 and will directly impact 33 collaborating departments, involving 816 department members.

Quilts of Valor extends thanks to 5 local veterans DEREK BARICHELLO
dbarichello@shawmedia.com A McNabb and three Ottawa veterans acknowledged feeling warmth beyond the quilts they were gifted Wednesday. The Illinois Valley Quilts of Valor honored veterans Reed Wilson, of McNabb; Ralph Maubach, of Ottawa; Nelson Nussbaum, of Ottawa; and Boyd Palmer, of Ottawa with handmade quilts during a ceremony at Eureka Savings Bank in La Salle in front of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation’s board of directors. The Illinois Valley Quilts of Valor also gifted a quilt to Deb Dahl, wife of late veteran and state Sen. Gary Dahl, of Granville, for his service and support of the organization. Betty Johnson, of the Illinois Valley Quilts of Valor, said the national organization was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, who had a dream where a soldier who was distressed was comforted by a quilt. From there, she set up efforts to enlist volunteers to create quilts. The effort grew nationally and to date more than 362,000 quilts have been given to veterans. Johnson said each quilt takes about 100 hours to make. She said during the Vietnam era soldiers were not always welcomed home and after introducing each quilt recipient Wednesday and covering their shoulders in the quilt, she made it a point to conclude the presentation by saying “welcome home.”

Terry Johnson and Betty Baznik present a Quilt of Valor awarded to Deb Dahl in honor of her late husband, state Sen. Gary Dahl. “There have been great changes in society since then in the respect veterans receive,” Wilson said after receiving his quilt. “For example, Putnam County students used to take the day off of school and now half of the day is spent with the veterans and honoring them. I think things have changed a lot.” Wilson served in the Army from 1970-1999 (including activated Army National Guard/reservists). He was ROTC from 1970-1974, U.S. Army Reserves from 1975-1981 and Illinois Army Reserves 1982-1999. His rank at discharge was O-3. From 1966 to 1968, Nussbaum served in the Navy. He was stationed in DaNang, Vietnam with detachment north of PhiBi Dong Hue Hue.
He operated heavy equipment overseas, including bulldozers, scraper pans and trucks. He received medals for expert rifleman, good conduct and Vietnam Tour of Duty. “I’m very appreciative,” Nussbaum said of the receiving the quilt. “It’s wonderful to be recognized.” Maubach served in the Army from 1963-1967. He was stationed in Chulai Vietnam from 1963-1965 and Camp Schwab in Okinawa in 1965. His rank at discharge was E-5. “Thank you,” Maubach said succinctly to Johnson and Betty Baznik who handed out the quilts. Palmer served in the Army from 1957-1959 (including Army National Guard/reservists). He was stationed in Ft. Monmouth in New York, White
Boyd Palmer of Ottawa is given a Quilt of Valor by Terry Johnson (left) and Betty Baznik on Nov. 8. Sand Proving Ground in Texas and Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. His rank at discharge was E-4. “It’s sort of overwhelming,” Palmer said after receiving his quilt. “It is nice for them to give this award to all of us. for what we were doing, which was protecting the United States.” From 1958 to 1961, Dahl served in the Army, with a discharge rank of SP5 E-5. He was stationed in Germany as a helicopter and field maintenance mechanic. He received the Good Conduct Medal and his commitment was extended because of the Berlin Wall was under construction.

Last year, the Panthers went 22-10 overall and 8-4 in the Tri-County Conference while winning the conference tournament and playing in a regional championship game. “This is a group with a lot of experience at the varsity level, so I think our girls know what to expect out of a full varsity season, and this group was kind of battle tested last year,” PC coach Jared Sale said. “We’re hoping that that will give us the opportunity to hit the ground running. “Coming off a 22-win season last year and bringing back many of our contributors from that team, we fully expect to produce another 20-plus win season. We also feel like we should be able to compete for conference and regional titles this year. It’s early, though, and there’s still a lot to figure out, so we just have to trust the process and continue to move in the right direction.” Sale said he expects the usual suspects – Seneca and Marquette – will be contenders in the Tri-County along with newcomer St. Bede. “I think the addition of St. Bede is going to make the top of the conference a lot stronger,” Sale said. “They started to play really well down the stretch last year, so I could definitely see them toward the top of the conference. I think anytime Lilly Craig is on the floor, Marquette has a shot as well. Seneca has proven to be a program that competes at a high level year in and year out, so even though they’ve had a lot of changes since last year, I think it’s hard to not have them in the conversation.” The Putnam County offense once again will center around Hatton, a two-time first-team NewsTribune All-Area pick who averaged 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game last season. “I fully expect Ava to be our leading scorer again this year,” Sale said. “The offense will run through her,

Putnam County’s Ava Hatton drives during a game against Roanok-Benson last season. Hatton averaged 15.5 points per game last season and enters her senior year with 1,001 career points. and she’ll have the opportunity to make the appropriate reads of the defense to create for herself and for others.” The senior enters the year with 1,001 points and sits 557 points behind the school record held by Tracy Palm. “It’s not something that is out of reach by any means, but she’ll have to produce her highest points-pergame total of her career this season to get there,” Sale said about the career scoring record. Senior guard Gabby Doyle (3.6 ppg, 3.3 apg), who was third-team all-conference last year, and senior
forward Maggie Richetta (3.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg) also will contribute offensively along with juniors Eme Bouxsien and Maggie Spratt. “We expect all seven of our seniors to contribute more than they did last year,” Sale said. “We hope to see Maggie [Richetta’s] and Gabby’s scoring tick up a little bit and hopefully get some added offense from juniors Eme Bouxsien and Maggie Spratt.” Sale expects the Panthers to once again be stingy on defense after leading the area in points allowed last winter, giving up 33.1 points per game.
“We lost Mikenna Boyd, who brought a lot of toughness to that side of the floor, and Gracie Ciucci was our vocal leader on the defensive end of the floor, so there are some voids to fill, but we feel pretty confident that the group we have understands those voids, and we’ve been making sure they’re getting filled,” Sale said. “In the past, we’ve done a great job of limiting teams to one shot per possession, and I think we have the pieces to control the defensive glass again this year, and that’s a big part of keeping teams contained offensively.”
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Tigresses are defending champions By KEVIN HIERONYMUS
khieronymus@bcrnews.com The Princeton Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament tipped off Monday, bringing nine area girls teams to Prouty Gym for a week of season-opening hoops. Putnam County plays out of the
White Pool alongs with Mendota, Putnam County and Midland. The host Tigresses, the defending champions, are joined by Stark County and Streator in the Blue Pool. Bureau Valley, making its last appearance in the tournament, will be joined by Erie-Prophetstown and Henry in the Gray Pool. The Lady Panthers opened Tuesday against Mendota. In the final round of pool play Wednesday, PC will play Midland at
5 p.m., Bureau Valley will play Erie-Prophetstown at 6:30 p.m. and Streator will play Stark County at 8 p.m. The teams will be re-pooled into Gold, Silver and Bronze brackets on Thursday for the rest of the tournament, which runs through Saturday. “It’s a great tournament. I always think it has been,” Princeton coach Tiffany Gonigam said. “If any one has come to that final day over the years, they have seen some great games. It doesn’t
matter if they’re playing for seventh and eighth place or first and second place, there have been some fantastic games. We have a balanced field and by the time you get to those championship rounds, it’s just a lot of fun.” There will be a F/S tournament co-hosted by Bureau Valley and Putnam County on Monday through Thursday with the finals held at Princeton on Saturday, Nov. 18. Participating teams include E-P, Mendota, Midland, Streator and the Ottawa freshmen.
