OSF to open clinics in mid-January Start date for Peru hospital still unknown By TOM COLLINS

tcollins@shawmedia.com The OSF HealthCare clinic in Spring Valley? It will open Jan. 11. The Oglesby clinic? Jan. 16 is the big day. The Peru hospital? That’s a work in progress. On Tuesday, two executives with OSF HealthCare appeared at a breakfast hosted by the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce to field questions from the business community. The big one, of course, is when newly acquired facilities will be opened to patients. A.J. Querciagrossa, chief executive officer for OSF’s western region, said the scheduled opening dates for the Spring Valley and Oglesby clinics. While everyone wants to know when the former Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru will be reopened, there simply is no date yet. “But it’s not going to be a year from now,” Querciagrossa said. OSF is working through a series of regulatory hurdles needed to reopen the hospital. OSF completed the acquisition of Peru and other properties on Nov. 17, but there still is work to be done. Next up is a comprehensive survey and update of the Peru facility’s network and IT infrastructure. Once that is completed, the Illinois Department of Public Health has to sign off and grant OSF a license to open. “There is a lot of work to be done over the next three months,” Querciagrossa said. State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, said the agencies in Springfield understand the urgency. Yednock said the governor’s office and IDPH are among the offices that “will make this a priority once OSF is ready to go through the inspection processes.” OSF has plenty of work to do after addressing regulatory issues. Determining the need for bed space and coordinating with EMS companies are among the myriad issues yet to be sorted. Even when opened, the Peru hospital will have “very limited capacity.” Why? They won’t immediately be able to bill and collect payment for services provided. “With very few exceptions will not be paid – at all,” said Dawn Trompeter, president for OSF St. Elizabeth and St. Paul medical centers. Despite the phased-in opening spelled out Tuesday, Querciagrossa said there is no truth to rumors that the Peru hospital will be another Streator, which is to say an ambulatory care center.

A.J. Querciagrossa, Western Region CEO for OSF HealthCare, announced the reopening of St. Margaret’s clinic in Spring Valley and the Oglesby clinic during the OSF Community Breakfast Regional Update on Tuesday at Senica’s Oak Ridge in La Salle. State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, asks questions Tuesday during the OSF Community Breakfast Regional Update at Senica’s Oak Ridge in La Salle.

There is a lot of work to be done over the next three months.” A.J. Querciagrossa, chief executive officer for OSF’s western region

“Is this is a real hospital?” Querciagrossa said. “Yes, it’s a full-service hospital, not a dumbed-down version.” Even when opened, however, OSF anticipates grappling with the widespread problems in rural health care that have resulted in the shutdown of 195 rural hospitals since 2005. Trompeter said digital outreach and telemedicine will be expanded, as 80% of services are provided on an outpatient basis.

OSF’s long-term plan includes outreach to schools to encourage kids to pursue many diverse careers within healthcare. Additionally, OSF has no plans to acquire the Spring Valley hospital. Surgical services will be available in Peru, but the timeline is to be determined.

Will OSF have a home medical supply storefront?

It’s “not on the horizon.” OSF will have an obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Peru. (The labor and delivery unit remains in Ottawa, at least for now)

Will patients be able to avoid traveling to Peoria?

For some services, such as heart surgery, patients must go to Peoria.

Morgan Phillips to run for 105th District state rep seat Lostant native previously worked as state Rep. Lance Yednock’s campaign manager SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

Morgan Phillips of Lostant will seek the Democratic nomination for Illinois state representative in the 105th District after submitting her petitions Monday to the Illinois State Board of Elections in Springfield. “I am running for office because I think young people must be more involved in politics,” Phillips said in a news release. “I want to be a voice for the future in Springfield to help assure that even 60 years into the future, we

have access to the same or better resources as previous generations.” Phillips grew up in rural Lostant. She attended Lostant Grade School, Putnam Morgan Phillips County High School and graduated from the Illinois Math and Science Academy. She continued her education at Illinois Valley Community College and earned her bachelor’s degree at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After graduating in 2022, she returned to the Illinois valley area where she was the campaign manager

for state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa. She is employed as a muralist and has contributed to public artworks on display in several local communities. Like Phillips, most residents of the 105th District live in small towns or unincorporated areas. “I understand this area well because I grew up here, especially our schools,” Phillips said. “Right now, I don’t think Illinois funds its schools fairly. We rely on property taxes, so if you live in a rural area, you won’t have as much money as a school in a wealthy suburb unless everyone pays higher taxes. If I am elected, I want to push to change that.” If Phillips remains unopposed in the March 19 primary, she will face

the winner of the Republican primary on Nov. 5, 2024. “I look forward to meeting more voters as I continue to go door-to-door and learn more about my community,” Phillips said. “Ideally, my participation in this election will encourage more young people like me to do the same. If the idea of running for state representative seems like too much as a first step, local elections like county board, school board or library board are just as important and I hope to inspire that.” The 105th District is represented by Dennis Tipsword, R-Metamora. It covers all of Putnam County and portions of Livingston, La Salle, Bureau, McLean, Woodford, Tazwell, Marshall and Peoria counties.

The Putnam County seventh grade girls basketball team continues to make history with every step it takes. The Pumas won the first seventh grade sectional championship in school history to earn their first state tournament appearance. PC beat Peoria St. Vincent de Paul, 30-24, on Wednesday, Nov. 29, to capture the Peoria Sectional championship. St. Vincent de Paul had a 29-6 record. Aranda said he is looking to improve as a coach while helping his wrestlers in his first season. “One goal I have for myself is to become a better coach to better help my athletes,” he said. “I’m only 23 years old and this is only my second year coaching and first as head coach, so I still have so much to learn. My expectation I have for the team is to give 110% effort in the wrestling room. My main goal for this year is for all the new wrestlers to really learn and enjoy the sport.” Princeton boys Coach: Steve Amy Top returners: Carlos Benavidez, sr., 144; Ace Christiansen, jr., 138; Casey Etheridge, so., 157/165; Kaydin Gibson, jr., 126; Cade Odell, jr., 285; Augustus Swanson, so., 106 Top newcomer: Arthur Burden, jr., 190 Worth noting: The Tigers opened the season with high prospects and optimism, ranked 15th in Class 1A with a lineup of five ranked wrestlers by Illinois Mat Men. Swanson (42-10) is ranked No. 2, Odell (30-10) is No. 4, Benavidez (31-14) is No. 9 and Christiansen (38-12) is No. 10 while Etheridge (31-15) has received all-state honorable mention. Swanson and Christiansen are returning state qualifiers. Also returning are seniors Preston Arkels (150/157) and Justin DePauw (150), juniors Mike Kirth (jr., 144) and Ian Morris (215) and sophomores Eli Berlin (190), Mike Kurth (144), Gage Nutter (132), Grayson Rockey (175) and Rhett Pearson (215). The Tigers welcome junior newcomers Burden (190), who won his first match, and Anthony Lewis

(144) and freshmen Abe Longeville (144) and Landon Kendall (175). “This should be a very exciting year for us. We return all but two from last year’s lineup that graduated. So we have a lot of talent and experience coming back,” Amy said. “It may take a little while for us to get going as many of these guys are coming off of a great football season. We have five guys currently ranked at their weight classes so we are looking for really big things out of them to lead the team in the right direction. They have been working really hard so far and it has been great.” St. Bede boys Coach: Sam Allen Top returners: Garrett Connelly, jr., 175; Jordan Coventry, jr., 144; Evan Englehaupt, sr., 144; Grady Gillan, jr., 190; Jack Maschmann, jr., 165; Logan Pineda, jr., 150; Hunter Savage, sr., 132 Top newcomers: Casey Shearer, sr., 126; Marco Rizzi, jr., 138; Yigit Arslan, sr., 215; Weston Heersink, so., 190 Worth noting: The Bruins lost a pair of sectional qualifiers in Ryan and Jake Migliorini – Ryan to graduation and Jake to basketball – but return an experienced roster. Connelley was 23-20 and a sectional qualifier last season, while Savage was 21-23 and Pineda was 24-11. Allen said Connelly, Savage and Pineda are all capable of advancing to state, while Coventry and Englehaupt could be postseason advancers as well. “Our team is packed with experienced juniors and seniors,” Allen said. “This will help us a lot in dual team competition. We are missing a few key weight classes due to injured athletes and athletes choosing not tom come out this season. So, my goals shifted a little. At this point, we are going to wrestle tough each and every match and focus on individuals developing and enhancing skills as much as possible up to the regional tournament.” ... Bella Boggio is the only female wrestler for St. Bede. Princeton girls Coach: Steve Amy Top returners: Heather Heider, sr.; Izzy Gibson, so.; Josie Leone, sr. Top newcomers: Kaitlynn Hartmann, jr.; Rylee Backes, fr.; Abby Harris, fr.; Jadeyn Klingenburg, fr. Worth noting: The Tigresses continue to build their program with three returning girls, who wrestled well at sectionals last year, and the addition of junior Kaitlynn Hartmann and freshmen Rylee Backes, Abby Harris and Jadeyn Klingenburg. Hartmann’s sister, Shaylnn, and Harris’ brother, Matthew, previously wrestled for PHS. This will be the first year the girls will have their own IHSA regional. “We have seven girls currently out so it is a very exciting time for the program,” Amy said. – Kevin Hieronymus and Kevin Chlum
