IT’S YOUR WRITE
Dear Editor, The OSF HealthCare Mission across the Illinois Valley is to serve with the greatest care and love. We are dedicated to ensuring individuals receive timely, appropriate services that meet the diverse needs of our communities. To that end, we’re shifting away from what are often thought of as traditional treatment methods like inpatient beds in every community and instead focusing on accessible lifesaving emergency care and robust inpatient services through key hubs. OSF is expanding emergency departments to five communities – Princeton, Mendota, Ottawa, Streator and Peru. As the health care landscape evolves, OSF HealthCare remains unwavering in its commitment to providing exceptional care. We’ve hired more than 450 area providers and staff – people who are known in the
community – to help us restore health care in the Illinois Valley and beyond. We have expanded our primary care and urgent care offerings in the area, including 24/7 virtual care as we embrace telehealth and digital solutions to provide easier access to care, reducing the need for extensive travel. Moving forward, OSF HealthCare is positioned to deliver precisely what the Illinois Valley needs. We understand health care isn’t one-size-fits-all – it’s about personalization and empathy, resonating with our community on an individual level. We’re preparing for a future where advancements in medicine and patient-centric care converge seamlessly. We deeply value everyone’s role in this journey. Your trust in us as your health care provider is invaluable, and we look forward to sharing these advancements with the community. Sincerely, August J. Querciagrossa

IVCC to close all but 2 parking lots for construction Lots to reopen Jan. 2 SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
An installation project will close all but two of Illinois Valley Community College’s parking lots before the college shuts down for winter break. They’re expected to reopen by Jan. 2 when the college reopens. The parking changes take effect Wednesday, Dec. 13, a week before the college closes Dec. 20. For the next week that the campus is open, staff and visitors will use Lot 7 east of the Community Technology Center or the Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking lot in front of the building. The circle drive also will be open for access to the entrance, but not for parking. Barricades will be erected at the closed lots and signs will direct drivers to Lot 7. The rerouting will affect theater-goers to the holiday production the weekend of Dec. 15-17 as well as daily visitors to counseling, admissions, financial aid, bookstore or other campus services. Parking for fans coming to the gym for the Eagles home basketball game Dec. 16 will be announced when it’s been determined. Fall semester classes are winding down this week, but campus services will operate through Dec. 19. The Main Campus and Ottawa Center will be closed for winter break from Dec. 20-Jan. 1. The lot closures are necessary for completion of a lighting and security upgrade project.

There still is time to sign up for the Online Master Gardener Course. The Bureau, La Salle, Marshall and Putnam County Unit extension office now has a limited number of scholarships available for this training. Contact Bettyann Harrison, master gardener/master naturalist coordinator, at 309-364-2356 or bettyann@illinois.edu for scholarship and program information. The Bureau, La Salle, Marshall and Putnam County Unit extension office now has a limited number of scholarships available for the Online Master Gardener Course. and can be taken from the comfort of home on a desktop, laptop or tablet. “Our online training is a great opportunity for folks who need more flexibility to participate,” State Master Gardener Specialist Candice Anderson said. “It is a self-paced program that can be completed at any time.” The training includes videos, a manual, reading materials and quizzes. The course can be completed in 14 weeks with four hours of weekly work.
A strong internet connection is highly recommended. After finishing training, participants have the option to put their newfound gardening knowledge to use by applying to become an Illinois Extension Master Gardener volunteer. To become a master gardener, you must fill out and submit an application by contacting your local county Extension office. After the local coordinator reviews the application, applicants will be asked for an interview. Acceptance of trainees will
be based on an established need for local Master Gardener volunteer activities. Note different counties have different periods for accepting applications and applying does not guarantee acceptance, as some units receive more applications than spaces available for training. Master Gardener volunteers participate in education programs in their communities. Those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups, or schools; answering calls or emails at garden help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens. This course is aimed at exposing participants to in-depth horticulture content through 13 modules including soils and fertilizers, plant diseases, entomology, pest management organic gardening and more. For information, visit extension.illinois.edu/mg/become-master-gardener. The course costs $300 and registration is open until Jan. 10. Local fees may apply. For more information, contact your local Illinois Extension Office at go.illinois.edu/ExtensionOffice.

HEALTH MATTERS
Hidden sources of caffeine Caffeine is a stimulant that untold millions, if not billions, of people across the globe insist they cannot go without. Whether it’s in a morning cup of coffee or a midday energy drink, caffeine serves as a vital kickstart for individuals whose energy levels could use a boost. Caffeine is often painted in a negative light, but such characterizations are misleading. The Mayo Clinic notes that up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. Coffee drinkers know that certain cups of coffee are stronger than others, but the U.S. National Library of Medicine indicates that a typical eight-ounce cup of coffee contains between 95 and 200 mg of caffeine, while a 12-ounce soda typically includes between 35 and 45 mg of caffeine. Coffee and soda are widely recognized sources of caffeine, making it a lot easier for individuals who consume these popular beverages to track and control their caffeine consumption. In addition to coffee and soda, various other foods and beverages contain
caffeine, some of which may surprise consumers. Manufacturers are not required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to cite caffeine content on nutrition labels, a controversial subject that various health advocates argue fails to protect consumers. Without new rules that mandate manufacturers to cite caffeine content on nutrition labels, consumers are on their own to determine how much caffeine they’re consuming each day. Recognition of these hidden sources of caffeine can help individuals avoid overconsumption of this powerful stimulant. • Decaffeinated coffee/tea: The terms “decaffeinated” and “caffeine-free” are not interchangeable. That’s because the process of decaffeination leaves trace amounts of caffeine, meaning decaffeinated coffees and teas contain a small amount of the stimulant. • Chocolate: Consumers may or may not be surprised to learn that cocoa beans naturally contain caffeine. As a result, products that contain chocolate, which is made from cocoa beans, also contain caffeine. Dark chocolate
generally contains more caffeine than light chocolate, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture reporting that a one-ounce serving of dark chocolate typically contains 12 mg of caffeine. However, various candies and other products that contain chocolate, including light varieties, are fortified with extra caffeine. • Headache treatments: Certain products that treat headaches contain caffeine. The manufacturers of two of the more popular pain relief products, Advil® and Tylenol®, assure consumers that their products do not contain caffeine. However, individuals who take Excedrin® to treat headaches should know that three Excedrin® products — Excedrin® Extra Strength, Excedrin® Migraine and Excedrin® Tension Headache — contain caffeine. • Breath mints: Certain breath mints contain caffeine. For example, Viter Energy mints, which some consumers see as an alternative to coffee, contain caffeine. Viter notes that its Energy Mints contain 40 mg of caffeine per mint, or roughly the same amount as a 12-ounce can of soda.
Decaf devotees may be surprised to learn that decaffeinated coffee contains small amounts of caffeine. Health care professionals feel that caffeine is generally safe for healthy individuals when consumed in moderation. But it behooves individuals to recognize hidden sources of caffeine that could potentially compromise their health if consumed to excess or along with other caffeinated products. TF223806

Blood vs. plasma Donating blood is a selfless act. Each year, blood donors collectively save the lives of millions of people across the globe. The American Red Cross reports that blood levels continue to be low, and hospital need often outpaces the rate at which many blood donation organizations can replenish their supplies, That reality results in emergency shortages. When people think about blood donations, they frequently envision whole blood donations. But it is possible to only donate plasma as well. And donors typically can donate plasma with greater frequency than they can donate blood. Whole blood donations include all four blood components: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. By contrast, plasma donation involves collecting only the plasma component of blood and returning the other three components to the donor, says Plasma Hero. The American Red Cross indicates plasma helps maintain blood pressure and volume; supplies critical proteins for blood clotting and immunity; carries electrolytes to muscles; and helps to maintain a proper pH balance in the body to support cell function. Plasma is around 90 per-

cent water and is utilized in therapies to replace missing, deficient or malfunctioning proteins in people with life-threatening diseases, including primary immunodeficiency and hemophilia. It also can be given to trauma and burn victims. It is an essential component, and a donation of plasma only takes a few minutes longer than donating whole blood.
