Summit combines STEM, agriscience, healthy living and emotional well-being SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

Nineteen teenage leaders from across Illinois were chosen to represent Illinois 4-H, including Marshall-Putnam County youth Kiryn Schaer, at the Ignite by 4-H Summit scheduled from March 13 to 17 in Washington, D.C. Teens will experience four days of inspiring and engaging panels, respected speakers, workshop sessions, entertainment and connections. The event previously took place as four different summits, but this will be the inaugural year as a super summit, combining STEM, agriscience, healthy living and emotional well-being interest tracks. Schaer will represent the delegation through the agriculture track. Youth will be able to form connections with fellow state delegates as well as new national connections. “I am looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends while also learning more about agriculture and STEM and how it affects us daily,” Schaer said. “I applied for the Ignite 4-H conference because I knew it would be a great opportunity to meet

Putnam County Rotary announced the availability of several scholarship opportunities for Putnam County High School seniors. Putnam County Rotary announced the availability of several scholarship opportunities for Putnam County High School seniors. Scholarship honors the memory of a member and past president who “fought the odds,” and persevered to become a successful businessman while also tirelessly serving our community. This award is given to a student who demonstrates those same qualities of determination and personal drive demonstrated by the scholarship’s namesake. Priority is given to qualified students anticipating expenses for college or vocational education. Added consideration is given to students having participated in Inter-

act or other avenues of community service. Rotary’s Vocational Service Award recognizes the year’s most successful and educationally rewarding employer-employee co-op program participant. Both the student and the employer are recognized. The club’s Dan Ramirez Memorial Scholarship Award honors the memory of fellow member and consummate volunteer Dan Ramirez, who died in a single-car accident on in 2022. The new scholarship favors seniors intending to advance their education in the field of internet technology, who have participated in community service, either as members of PCHS Interact or otherwise. Previous recipients also may apply for continuing support. Putnam County Rotary also assists in advertising scholarships available through Tri-County Opportunities Council, on the board of which the club is represented by two of its members. Areawide, the agency offers 12 scholarships of up to $1,250 each to income-eligible students, with consideration given to those pursuing high-demand careers, and to racial or

ethnic minorities. Previous recipients may apply for continuing support. Applications are available through the office of PCHS Guidance Counselor Tyler Ellena. Application deadlines are set by that office. In addition to these scholarships, Rotary International also offers scholarships for advanced college studies for college graduates pursuing advanced degrees in literacy, women and child health, disease prevention, water and sanitation, vocational independence and local or world peace and conflict resolution. Rotary is an international service organization that brings together community leaders and volunteers who exchange ideas and take action, making a difference both locally and globally. Rotary projects include youth leadership development, global peace initiatives and humanitarian relief. Thank you also to everyone who remembered Joe with cards, messages, phone calls, monetary donations, flowers, Masses, and prayers. A special thank you to all the local fire departments and emergency services who attended and made Joe’s services so special with the honor guard, bell ringing, and touching eulogy. To the Standard Fire Department, Granville Police Department, and Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, the escort and tribute to Joe on the day of the funeral as we took him on his last ride through Standard and past the fire station will never be forgotten. Thank you. Thank you also to Bob and Darlene Cofoid at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel for all they did to make Joe’s services so special and to Father Scott Potthoff and Father Paul Meismer for the beautiful Church service. Thanks also to Eric and Bri Verruchi and the staff at Jack’s for the wonderful dinner provided after the services. Words cannot express how grateful we are for all the support provided to us by so many. God bless you all.
