Putnam County Library District to host Starved Rock Massacre, ‘fact or fiction’ program
Presentation will examine earliest accounts
The Putnam County Library District will host “The Starved Rock Massacre of 1769, Fact or Fiction” at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Standard branch, 128 First St.
Were the Illinois Native Americans destroyed by their enemies, the Potawatomi and Ottawa at Starved Rock in 1769? Or is the famous Legend of Starved Rock a fanciful fiction that flowed from the pens of creative 19th century writers? This presentation examines the earliest, most popular, and most influential accounts of the incident and compares these accounts with period documents and archaeological investigations to determine whether the massacre was an actual historic event.
The Putnam County Library District will be closed Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30. It will reopen Monday, April 1.

IVCC to host welding registration sessions this spring
New students must register at a session
contact@shawmedia.com
Illinois Valley Community College’s Welding Department is hosting three welding registration sessions this spring on March 5, April 16 and May 14.
All sessions start at 5 p.m. at the Main Campus.
Session 1 is March 5 in CTC 123 to register for spring courses that start March 18.
Session 2 is April 16 in CTC 123 to register for summer or fall courses.
Session 3 is May 14, in CTC 123 to register for summer or fall.
All new welding students must register for the program through a welding information session.
Sign up for a session by contacting the Workforce Development Division Office at 815-224-0233 or emailing kim_ herout@ivcc.edu. Anyone unable to make these dates should contact Herout.
Information sessions will be held just down the hall from the Admissions Department, so prospective students can register and enroll all at once.
No previous welding experience is necessary, and instructors work to find the best fit for students at whatever stage they enter the program, said Program Coordinator Theresa Molln.
IVCC’s welding program is ideal for beginners who’ve never welded, for those with some welding background, and for industry employees who want to expand skills at their current employer, Molln said.
Students receive individualized instruction in small classes and use
state-of-the-art welding equipment and a large lab and fabrication area.
A flexible schedule makes it convenient to students with all types of commitments to attend, from swing shift workers to high school students. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings Monday through Thursday. Instructors are backed by experience across varied industries.
Some local industries set flexible work schedules so employees can attend classes, or partner with IVCC to train their workers.
Welding draws people looking for good-paying jobs, farmers and others who use the skill in repair work – even artists who want to build showcases for their work. Others just enjoy the skill and its many uses, Molln said.
Graduates are welcomed into a workforce at industries such as Vactor Manufacturing in Streator, HCC in Mendota, Sabic in Ottawa, Marquis Energy in Hennepin and Carus in La Salle, Molln said.
Two students who graduated from the program last fall went straight to work in industry or with a pipefitters union, while a third is training for a career as an underwater welder. IVCC’s district is a prime labor market for welders because its industries range from vehicle manufacturing and fabricated metal product manufacturing to machine shops, agriculture, construction and mining.
Activities happen outside the classroom too, like a spring welding competition for high school and college students, a week-long SPARK Jr. Welding Academy summer session for youths, and a campus welding club that lets students work independently on projects.
For information on the program, contact Molln at 815-224-0630 or by email theresa_molln@ivcc.edu or visit https://www.ivcc.edu/programsbyareaofstudy/welding/index.php.

New IVCC dental hygiene program to accept applications
SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
Illinois Valley Community College’s new dental hygiene program is accepting applications this spring for its first class that begins this fall.
IVCC already offers dental assisting, and the addition of dental hygiene will boost the Illinois Valley’s dental health services in several ways. It will mean local students can finish both certificate and degree programs here and qualify for better-paying jobs, supply the region’s dental practices with additional trained professionals and enable the college to expand free and low-cost dental care.
“Employment of dental hygienists is projected to grow in the next 10 years faster than the average of all occupations,” Dean of Health Professions Heather Seghi said in a news release. “Our area is in desperate need of both dental assistants and dental hygienists. Since our program prepares both, it should fulfill the need in our area well.”
Dental assistants assist the dentist in preventive, restorative and surgical procedures, complete labwork, perform instrument sterilization, electronic dental record -
keeping, digital radiography and can perform office administrator duties. Dental hygienists have wider responsibilities, including patient assessment, treatment and prevention of oral diseases, and community oral health program planning. They work in a wide variety of settings, including general dentistry or periodontal offices, public health clinics, pediatric offices and hospital clinic settings, among others.
Applicants preparing to enroll in IVCC’s Dental Hygiene program must have completed an accredited Dental Assisting program from IVCC or at another college.
“I would anticipate that most, if not all, students that apply will have been graduates of our program at one time or another,” Seghi said.
IVCC’s program offers a career laddering option, one of two community colleges in the state to do so. After completing a Dental Assisting Certificate, students can work in the field while earning an Associate in Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene. The dental assisting program can be completed in three semesters and the dental hygiene curriculum can be completed in an additional four semesters.
Adding dental hygiene means the
college’s free and low-cost dental clinic, now scheduled every spring, can be open over three semesters to provide more people with affordable dental care, Seghi said.
“That will help improve the overall oral health of our community while giving our students an amazing opportunity to hone their skills before joining the workforce in either dental assisting or dental hygiene.”
The program will mean staffing changes but no facility changes, at least for now. Seghi said the program
will seek a supervising dentist and registered dental hygienist who have earned at least a bachelor’s degree to join the team of instructors welcoming the incoming fall class. They’ll join two full-time and five part-time dental faculty. Both clinical segments will operate from the 2-yearold Dental Health Center in the Gym building.
An announcement this month that IVCC’s program was granted Initial Accreditation status by the Commission on Dental Accreditation set the launch in motion this spring, Seghi said. The announcement capped three years of development by dental program faculty and advisers.
“One of our amazing adjunct faculty members, Katie Henkel, started this process for us before she moved into elementary education and our current program coordinator Lyndsey Beetz finished it. We are very fortunate to have the support of our faculty, administrators, community member and dentists as we would not have gotten this far without them!” Seghi said.
Applications will be accepted through May 1. For information on the program and its requirements, visit www.ivcc.edu/dentalhygiene. To apply, visit www.ivcc.edu/apply

1999: Venus and Serena Williams become the first sisters to win WTA Tour events on the same day Venus won the IGA SuperThrift Tennis Classic in Oklahoma City after Serena took her first WTA title at the Gaz de France Open. 1971: Jack Nicklaus wins the PGA Championship by beating Billy Casper by three strokes.
St. Bede overcomes 14-point deficit for sectional title
Bruins win first sectional plaque in 24 years
By KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com
GARDNER – Throughout the season, St. Bede coach Stephanie Mickley has been preaching to her players they were capable of having a special season.
Senior Ali Bosnich didn’t always believe.
She does now.
The No. 2-seeded Bruins fell behind by 14 points against No. 1 Serena, a team playing for its third consecutive sectional title, but stormed all the way back to win 50-48 on a putback by Bosnich with 11.1 seconds left in the Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Sectional championship Thursday.
“Our coach has believed in us and told us we’re going to accomplish so
much and we were like, ‘We’ll believe it when we see it.’ And we’re believing it,” Bosnich said.
With the comeback victory, the Bruins captured their first sectional title since 1999-00 and matched the program record for wins with 28, which also came 24 years ago.
“This game was everything. I expected it to be,” Mickley said. “I didn’t expect to be down by 14 points, but they battled back just like they always do. The coaches were instrumental in helping change things up to throw different looks to try to keep them off balance. The girls ultimately pulled through on their own. They did a great job and it means everything to me because I’m so happy for them.”
St. Bede (28-7) advances to play Ida Crown Academy (20-3) in the Harvest Christian Supersectional at 7 p.m. Monday in Elgin.
The Aces advanced with a 61-56 vic-
tory over Willows Academy in the Collins Sectional final.
“I’m just happy the season is continuing,” Bosnich said. “I wasn’t ready for it to end yet.”
The Bruins’ season appeared to be in jeopardy in the first half Thursday.
The Huskers used a press to pester St. Bede into turnovers, which the Huskers turned into points on the other end.
Serena led 18-14 after one quarter after back-to-back 3-pointers by senior guard Gwen O’Connell in the final minute.
Junior Jenna Setchell knocked down a 3 to start the second quarter for Serena, which sparked a 12-2 run that extended the lead to 30-16.
However, the Bruins managed an 8-1 run to close the half – highlighted by three buckets by Ashlyn Ehm – to close the gap to 31-24 at the break.
“We got momentum,” said Bosnich,
who admitted she was feeling “a little defeated” down by 14. “Once we gain momentum, there’s no stopping us.”
The Bruins pulled to within 31-27 early in the third on a three-point play by Ehm, but the Huskers responded with back-to-back 3s by O’Connell to go back up 10.
However, the Bruins made a defensive switch and held O’Connell without a shot the rest of the way.
“We had to go man (after O’Connell’s 3s),” Mickley said. “We switched to different zones and they just found ways to hit, so we were forced to come out at them and really just locked down. We just had to play hard and control the boards.”
The Bruins also took care of the ball better, committing one turnover in the third quarter and four in the second half.

“Patience was our main message at halftime,” Bosnich said. “We were rushing, so once we just started to slow down and take our time and do our thing, that’s what changed the game.”
The Huskers were forced to take off the press because of foul trouble. Seniors Paisley Twait and Makayla McNally each had four fouls midway through the third.
“We were pushing the ball (in the first half). I think the press got them tired a little bit,” Serena coach Jim Jobst said. “Then we had to take it off because we got in foul trouble and then we kind of stopped pushing.
“They went to that three big lineup to start the second half and that was a tough matchup for us. They got an easy putback right at the beginning.”
The Putnam County eighth grade volleyball team was celebrated Feb. 12 for defeating Midland to finish as undefeated champions in the Tri-County Conference. Team members are (front row, from left) Diana Ely, Eden Carlson, Tinlee Sistek, Jaycee Dickey, Naty Villagomez, Megan Wiley and Illiana Luke; and (back row) Mya Barajas, Kennedy Holocker, Avery Grasser, Myah Richardson, Finley Rue, Sam Marciniak and Britney Trinidad. The Putnam County seventh grade volleyball team wrapped up an undefeated Tri-County Conference championship by defeating Midland on Feb. 12. Team members are (front row, from left) Makenna Wrobleski, Lillian Bouxsein, Jaylynn Dickey, Bailee Vice and Joselyn Lopez; and (back row) Millie Harris, Anna Poignant, Hannah Heiberger, Layton (Tula) Rue, McKlay Gensini, Kinsey Pierski, Kami Nauman and Coach Shannon Jenkins.

Bosnich eventually came up with it and scored with 11.1 seconds left.
“It was in slow motion for me,” Bosnich said. “I think it hit off Ashlyn’s foot. I picked it up off the ground, put a dribble down, saw hands and ended up on the floor but the basket was good.”
Serena pushed the ball across midcourt and called timeout with 5.6 seconds left, but the Huskers were forced into a bad pass and turned it over.
With less than a second left, the Bruins inbounded the ball and were soon mobbed by a large student section just after the final buzzer.
All of our supporters came out. Basically our whole school. It just feels so good. I’m so excited to be with this team and I don’t want it to be over. I’m super proud of my team.”
The Bruins cut their deficit to 41-38 by the end of the third quarter and took their first lead since late in the first quarter on a Bosnich bucket that made it 45-44 with 3:23 left.
Ashlyn Ehm, St. Bede junior
Twait, who scored 31 points in the sectional semifinal, responded with two baskets in the paint for the Huskers for a 48-45 lead before senior guard Ella Hermes buried a 3 with 1:40 left to tie it.
Out of a timeout with 56.8 seconds left, the Bruins ran the clock down before Ehm put up a shot that missed.
“Oh, my gosh, it feels so great,” Ehm said. “All of our supporters came out. Basically our whole school. It just feels so good.
“I’m so excited to be with this team and I don’t want it to be over. I’m super proud of my team.”
Ehm scored a game-high 22 points for St. Bede, while Bosnich finished with 15 points and now sits six away from 1,000.
O’Connell scored 14 to lead the Huskers (27-6), while Twait and McNally had 11 each.
The loss ends the stellar careers of Serena’s four seniors – Twait, McNally, O’Connell and Dani Britt –who helped the Huskers to 99 wins, two sectional titles and a fourth-place finish at state in their four years.
“They’ve meant a ton to our program,” Jobst said. “They had 99 wins in four years and one was the 14-game COVID season. They took fourth at state. They have everything to be proud of. They’ve done amazing things.”
