Putnam County’s performance will be presented with permission of Concord Theatricals.

License awarded for Peru’s OSF Saint Elizabeth hospital

OSF announces Department of Public Health approval

OSF HealthCare cleared an additional regulatory hurdle in its effort to reopen the Peru hospital, still targeted for Sunday, April 7.

On Wednesday, OSF posted on one of its Facebook pages, OSF HealthCare –Illinois Valley, that the network moved “another step closer to opening OSF Saint Elizabeth – Peru.”

“The Illinois Department of Public Health conducted a licensing survey at the Peru hospital on March 5, and we

received our license. Our phase one opening will include emergency services and limited inpatient beds, with additional programs and services to come in phase two. Stay tuned for updates as we start making a difference in Peru.”

Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski said Wednesday that he was pleased with the announcement.

“This is another giant step forward,” Kolowski said. “This just goes to show better days are ahead for the region.”

The April 7 opening date, which was announced Jan. 29, looks increasingly solid. That timeline was issued a year after the former Illinois Valley Community Hospital, then St. Margaret’s, closed in Peru.

“We are currently completing the

IDPH life/safety survey process,” said Dawn Trompeter, president of OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center. “There are no other regulatory hurdles we need to meet to open the ED and limited inpatient services on day one. Once we are open, [the] joint commission will complete a survey, as well, before we will expand to 12 inpatient beds and provide outpatient services.

“We do not foresee any obstacles at this point and feel confident we will open on April 7.”

Diagnostic imaging, a laboratory, a pharmacy, EKG and respiratory services will be available to patients in the emergency department and inpatient unit, OSF has said. There still are elements that will need to be finalized before the official opening.

The 2024 Illinois spring trout fishing season will open Saturday, April 6, at 58 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state, including a site in Bureau County and two in La Salle County.

The Hennepin Canal Parkway in Bureau County, along with the Illinois & Michigan Canal Lock 14 in La Salle and Lake Mendota in Mendota, will open their season that day.

An early opportunity at select trout sites – the spring catch-and-release fishing season – will open Saturday, March 23. No trout may be kept during the catch-and-release period, but anglers can keep trout after the opening of the regular season begins April 6. The daily harvest limit for each angler is five trout.

The Illinois Catchable Trout Program receives funding support by those who use the program through

the sale of inland trout stamps.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocks more than 80,000

rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the spring season. An addi -

tional 80,000 trout will be stocked for the fall trout season, which begins in October.

For the 2024 spring trout season, no trout may be taken from any stocked sites between March 15 and the season opening at 5 a.m. April 6. Anyone trying to harvest trout before the legal harvest season will be issued citations.

For information about all site regulations, anglers should contact individual sites that will be stocked with catchable-size trout. Not all sites are open for trout catch-and-release season, and not all sites open at 5 a.m. April 6.

The spring trout season offers opportunities for families to get outdoors and enjoy fishing. For youth fishing, resources are available at ifishillinois.org/Kids_Fishing/kidsfishing.html. All anglers, including those who intend to release fish caught before April 6, must have a fishing license and an inland trout stamp unless they are younger than 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces.

Fishing licenses and trout stamps can be bought by using a credit card online. For information on trout seasons and other Illinois fishing opportunities, visit ifishillinois.org.

‘Love of the game’ kept him at the mic

Longtime WLPO broadcaster Rick Sipovic retires after 4 decades calling local games

Growing up in Mendota, Rick Sipovic became interested in radio while listening to Art Kimball broadcast games and report on local sports in the mornings on WLPO.

“I was very intrigued by Art and his voice and everything else,” Sipovic said. “That’s the way my interest began.”

Later, when he was the public address announcer for La Salle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College football and basketball, he got to know WLPO sportscaster Lanny Slevin.

In 1979, when Slevin was looking for a new partner, he asked Sipovic.

And the rest, they say, is history.

Slevin and Sipovic called games together from 1979 to 2013, when Slevin retired. Sipovic continued on – switching from more of the color role when he was with Slevin to play-by-play duties – until this basketball season, when he decided to retire himself.

“Love of the game,” Sipovic said about what kept him on the air for more than 40 years. “I just enjoyed the fact I could tell people about what was going on.”

Sipovic called his last game Feb. 29, when the St. Bede girls basketball team played Altamont in the IHSA Class 1A third-place game in Normal.

“Rick is a professional, all-American broadcaster,” Slevin said. “He can handle any sport. He can do anything you ask him to do. … He’s one of a kind. He’s a natural jokester. He has a great personality. I wish him all the best in his retirement.

“He’s going to be greatly missed by the people in the Illinois Valley.”

Sipovic decided it was time to spend more time with his family.

“I’ll be 72 in May,” Sipovic said. “My wife and I will be married 48 years this year. Almost every year we’ve been married, I’ve been gone on every weekend doing games. We have five grandchildren. They’re all healthy and fun and great to be around. While I’m able to be healthy and fun to be around too, I want to spend more time with them. I have two older grandkids, one who plays football at St. Bede and one who

plays soccer at Plainfield North. I want to be able to go see them play.”

Sipovic said he didn’t really know what to do when he first got behind the microphone with Slevin 44 years ago.

“When I went to go do my first game, I had no clue what i was supposed to be doing,” Sipovic said. “I kind of knew how to keep stats, which was part of what I was doing. Lanny told me it’ll come to me, that I’d develop my own system of doing things, and I’ll have a system of getting him information, and as we go along I’d want to talk more.

“He said it’ll just happen on its own, and he was right.”

The duo was known for calling basketball, including many state tournaments, and football, but also did baseball, softball, volleyball and other events, including a tug of war with an appearance by legendary Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus.

“He does everything well,” Slevin said. “He was called upon to do a variety of things. Rick is very versatile.”

Sipovic said he learned from Slevin early on that pregame preparation was crucial.

“One thing I learned from Lanny was to overprepare and underuse, meaning prepare a lot more information than you’re likely to need during a game, because it’s OK if you don’t use it, but if you don’t have enough, you can sound pretty bad on air,” Sipovic said.

Sipovic always handled setting up the equipment, allowing Slevin to talk with coaches and gather information. During games, Sipovic kept statistics and made sure Slevin had the necessary numbers and info.

“Rick and I worked together so long that whenever I needed a number or how may yards this guy had, he could point it out,” Slevin said. “It made the broadcast go much smoother because we weren’t messing around trying to figure out who did this, who did that.”

Traveling all over the state calling more than 100 contests per school year for more than 30 years, Sipovic and Slevin developed a strong friendship that came through with a good on-air rapport.

“We had a lot of hours on the road,” Sipovic said. “We found out we had a lot

of things in common, and it just kind of rolled from there,” Sipovic said. “We became friends. Once you’re friends, you want to do things more with them, and it kind of grew.

“We liked having fun. I think more people knew we were there to have fun. To tell a story, obviously, but to have fun both with the game and each other, as well.”

When Slevin retired in 2013, Sipovic moved into the play-by-play role and carried on. He said he enjoyed doing color and play-by-play.

“Doing color is actually more fun than doing play-by-play,” Sipovic said. “Play-by-play you have to be on every play. You have to look for everything. You have to try to keep it smooth and keep it going. Whereas when you’re doing color, you can interject something whenever you see it and whenever you want. You don’t have to have that rhythm going all the time. It was more fun doing color, but probably more rewarding doing play-by-play.”

Lady Panthers roll over Plano

Maggie Richetta was 3 for 4 with a triple, five RBIs and two runs as the Putnam County softball team rolled to a 15-3 nonconference victory at Plano on Friday, March 15.

Gabby Doyle went 3 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs for PC (2-0), while Timmber Skinner went 1 for 2 with two runs and a pair of RBIs.

Paxton Stunkel tossed a complete game for the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

BASEBALL

Hall 7, Putnam County 1: Luke Bryant and Payton Dye drove in two runs each to help the Red Devils to a nonconference victory in Spring Valley on Friday, March 15.

Bryant was 2 for 3 with a double and a run, while Dye was 2 for 3 with a double.

Max Bryant was the winning pitcher for Hall (1-1) as he allowed one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Braden Curran and Luke Bryant combined for three scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit.

A.J. Furar was 1 for 2 with a run for PC (1-2).

• SIPOVIC

Continued from page 11

Sipovic estimates he broadcast close to 4,000 contests, and did so from some pretty interesting places.

He and Slevin broadcast from press boxes (inside and on top), sidelines, end zones, ladders, flatbed trucks, pickup trucks, scaffolding, bleachers, stages and the roof of a dorm among other places. They broadcast inside and through all sorts of weather, including rain, wind, snow and ice.

“We had some very unique places,” Sipovic said.

Sipovic said IVCC football was a phenomenon, and he has fond memories of covering those games. He also enjoyed calling Hall’s runner-up basketball teams, the three straight Bureau Valley third-place teams, La Salle-Peru and St. Bede teams and “all those great athletes” that came through the area.

“The fun thing was when you’d get to the state tournament and had a local team there,” Sipovic said. “That added a real lot.”

Fittingly, Sipovic’s career ended at a state tournament. His final week also included calling L-P boys basketball in the Pontiac Sectional.

Sipovic said he heard well wishes from plenty of listeners leading up to his final game.

“Most of the people who I hear from I know or I recognize,” Sipovic said. “Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes it’s just people who have listened over the years, and they want to come over and say thanks and congratulations and we’re going to miss you. I guess I never realized really how much people are listening anymore.

“It’s pretty neat we’re able to connect like that here at the very end.”

PUTNAM COUNTY BASEBALL PREVIEW

Coach: Chris Newsome

Last year’s record: 19-14 (10-4 Tri-County)

Top returners: Drew Carlson, jr., IF/OF/P; Jonathon Stunkel, so., IF/OF/P; Cole Vipond, sr., OF

Key newcomers: Miles Main, jr., C/P; Jaden Stoddard, jr., IF/P; Ayden Lawless, jr., P/OF; Daric Wiesbrock, jr., OF/P; Cameron Spradling, jr., OF/P; A.J. Furar, jr., IF/P; Traxton Mattingly, so., IF/C/P; Kade Zimmerlein, fr., IF/P

Worth noting: The Panthers lost the majority of their key contributors from last season, returning only five players who accounted for 14% of the team’s at-bats and only 1 2/3 innings pitched last spring. “For the vast majority, this will be the first opportunity to play varsity baseball, and while we have plenty of room for improvement, I like the willingness and eagerness of our players to absorb as much baseball knowledge and coaching that we can give them,” Newsome said. “This mindset should pay off with better baseball being played the further we go into the season. I truly expect this year’s team to continue to get better the more they play. There is ample room for growth in all aspects of the

PUTNAM COUNTY SOFTBALL PREVIEW

Coach: Adrianna Zeman

Last year’s record: 15-8, 7-7 Tri-County

Top returners: Gabby Doyle, sr.; Kylee Moore, sr.; Salina Breckenridge, sr.; Maggie Richetta, sr.

Worth noting: The Lady Panthers return seven starters and nine players overall for Zeman’s second season. “We have a lot of experience on this team,” Zeman said. “We learned and grew a lot together as a group last year and being able to return nine girls has been huge for our program to continue moving forward and building from day one. I expect this team to put together some great softball games, fight, and improve every game. Many of them have played together a long time and understand their roles on this team and I think they will do a great job at teaching the newcomers what they have learned throughout the years together. Our goal this year is to execute when the pressure is on and hold ourselves accountable and be able to learn

game, but with the right mindset and willingness to work in order to get better, we should be playing our best baseball when it matters the most.” ... Newsome said Stunkel, Carlson, Mattingly, Zimmerlein, Spradling, Wiesbrock and Main have looked good offensively in practice. The Panthers hope to play good defense behind an inexperienced pitching staff. “We will need to play solid defensively because of the wild card that is our pitching staff,” Newsome said. “We have the pieces to play well defensively, but we simply need to gain more experience. I feel like we should see a noticeable improvement on defense after a handful of games because we will have some game film that we can break down with our guys.” While the pitchers are inexperienced, Newsome has seen potential in the group that includes 10 players who could take the mound. “I like what I’ve seen so far from our pitching staff,” Newsome said. “We should be a group that pounds the zone, induces soft contact and lets the defense work behind them.” ... Senior Rikki Trinidad is out for baseball for the first time.

and come back better the next at bat, inning or contest. They are a gritty bunch and thrive on building momentum off of each other.” ... Doyle (.356), Moore (.344) and Breckenridge (.344) were three of the team’s top five hitters last spring, while Richetta (3 HR, 32 RBIs) is expected to provide pop in the middle of the lineup. “We have a good mix of strength, speed and aggressiveness throughout the lineup that will help us manufacture runs,” Zeman said. Senior Paxton Stunkel takes over as the No. 1 pitcher after getting some innings last season. “Paxton is a competitor and has a great catcher alongside her to complete the battery,” Zeman said. “Once she gets in her groove, I think it’s going to be fun to watch her compete this year.” ... Rounding the roster are senior Sarah Johnson, junior Valeria Villagomez and sophomores Ella Irwiin and Ella Pyszka and freshman Timmber Skinner and Alexis Margis.
