Matthiessen State Park annex may begin in 2025

The director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources hopes construction on the Matthiessen State Park annex will begin next year.

During a Zoom conference on park safety Monday, hosted annually by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie said she hopes to soon see development of some of the Matthiessen land acquired from Buzzi Unicem.

“I don’t know when shovels will be in the ground,” Finnie said, “but I’m hopeful for 2025.”

As previously reported, IDNR has mapped out the 2,629 acres into eight zones. One will be annexed to the far western end of Starved Rock State Park featuring a scenic overlook of the Illinois River. To the south are parcels to be annexed to Matthiessen, one of which will include a 200-site campground, park office and a BMX riding area.

New areas to attract visitors would be welcome because Starved Rock is bracing for a big summer. Site Superintendent Alvin Harper reported during the Zoom conference park attendance has ticked up thanks to a mild finish to winter.

“With this nice spring, we’ve had extremely busy month in April,” Harper said, reporting a recent weekend that drew 40,000 visitors – a volume comparable to Independence Day.

Harper said park staff have added large trash receptacles and portable toilets in place ahead of Memorial Day weekend, at which point attendance is likely to surge.

Traffic has not been a problem. Save for some pavement repairs coming in May at the interchange of Route 178 and Interstate 80, there are no major road repairs planned in and around Utica. The traffic circle installed at Route 178 and U.S. 6 is getting rave reviews from Utica first

responders.

“The traffic has been fantastic and the roundabout has been working very well,” Utica Fire Chief Ben Brown said.

With big crowds come safety issues, however, and here the news was mixed.

On the plus side, the influx of families has meant more on-trail, minor-injury accidents as opposed to catastrophic falls more from the cliffs.

On the downside, IDNR Conservation Police Sgt. Phil Wire reported an increased number of missing person and/or suicide calls.

Starved Rock is in the process of updating signage mounted near the cliff edges. The signs direct the despondent to where they can seek help. Wire also said Conservation Police are looking into acquiring license-plate reading cameras to facilitate the search for missing and at-risk persons.

“It will be a good tool in the future,” Wire said.

Suicides are a concern at state parks and not just at Starved Rock.

“Suicides in general are up and we

do, unfortunately, see suicides at parks across the state,” Finnie said.

Keeping the parks safe means more off-road work for Conservation Police. Eighteen officers have trained in all-terrain vehicle operations.

Conservation Police could use some reinforcements, though. Finnie said

the state is trying to keep Conservation Police salaries and benefits in line with what the state police are offering in an era when recruitment remains challenging.

“We just need three times as many (Conservation officers),” Rezin said.

“We’re working on it,” Finnie said.

IVCC’s Cathy Lenkaitis awarded nurse educator fellowship

Lenkaitis was 1 of 76 awarded statewide

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

The Illinois Board of Higher Education awarded 76 nurse educator fellowships totaling $760,000 for fiscal 2024, including one to Illinois Valley Community College’s Cathy Lenkaitis.

The awarded fellowships will help retain well-qualified nursing faculty at institutions of higher education that award degrees that lead to a registered nurse licensure, the IBHE said in a news release Thursday.

Retaining qualified nursing faculty will help ensure that nursing students are prepared to enter the workforce and fill a shortage in a critical area of the health care workforce. The number of grants awarded almost doubled from the previous fiscal year because of an increase in funds in Gov. JB Pritzker’s fiscal 2024 budget supported by the General Assembly.

Fellowships were awarded to nurse educators with a strong commitment to use fellowship funds to enhance their professional practice in their specialty area and who remain in higher education. Each fellowship is $10,000, and the funds are salary supplements that may be used for expenses related to professional development and continuing education to

This year’s fellows are focusing their fellowship funds on nursing simulation training and instructional development; diversity, equity and inclusion training; the development of new curriculum, teaching methods and research; earning professional certifications and advanced degrees; and attending professional conferences for nurse educators.

BASEBALL: ST. BEDE 14, PUTNAM COUNTY 0 (5 INN.)

St. Bede jumps on Putnam County early

Bruins score 6 runs in 1st inning, 8 in 4th of Tri-County win

PERU – The St. Bede baseball team jumped on Putnam County in the first inning and added another big inning in the fourth.

Meanwhile, pitcher Gino Ferrari and the Bruins’ defense held the Panthers in check as St. Bede cruised to a 14-0, five-inning victory in a TriCounty Conference game Tuesday.

“I thought we attacked the zone pretty well, Gino threw a good game, and defensively we played well except for the first play of the game,” St. Bede coach Bill Booker said. “We played a pretty complete game. We had better plate approaches. We hit the ball with a little bit of authority today. Good things will happen when you do that.

“I’m happy for the kids, but we have a long way to go to get ready for the regional that’s coming up very soon.”

After Ferrari allowed a double and a walk to start the game, he ended the inning with a caught stealing, popout and lineout to send the Bruins to the plate.

St. Bede’s offensively immediately started to make things happen.

A hard line drive by leadoff batter Ryan Slingsby was missed at third base, and he took second on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single to right field by Gus Burr.

No. 3 hitter Nathan Husser then launched the ball over the center field fence for a two run home run – his second in the past four games and his third on the season, which is tied for the area lead.

“I’ve spent my time in the weight room, and I’ve spent time eating,” Husser said. “I’ve done that part of it. Now all it is is seeing the ball onto the barrel and letting my body do the work.”

After an out, Luke Tunnell got the Bruins (16-11, 7-5 TCC) going again with a single.

Following back-to-back walks, Carson Riva hit the ball to right field to bring in two runs. Riva was thrown

out running to second, but that allowed Aidan Mullane to score the sixth run of the inning.

“We hit the ball real well,” Husser said. “One through nine we were able to battle and put the barrel on the ball, and if you put the barrel on the ball, good things will happen.

“We came out with energy, and we were seeing the ball onto the barrel. When you bat through the order in the first, you know you’re doing something right.”

Ferrari was perfect in the second and third innings before a walk and an error put two runners on to start the fourth.

However, Ferrari retired the final six batters of the game, including his fourth strikeout to end the game.

“I thought he mixed his pitches pretty well,” Booker said. “One inning we had to get on him about attacking the zone a little bit better, but after that he was pretty efficient. He threw four innings and had 65 pitches or something like that, so we were happy with his efficiency.”

The Bruins ended the game by batting around again in the fourth inning.

Husser ripped an RBI double, while

Burr, Ferrari and Mullane had RBI singles, and Tunnell hit a sacrifice fly.

Johnathan Stunkel had the only hit, and Miles Main took the loss on the mound for the Panthers (6-14, 5-7), who committed three errors.

“I give them credit. They were putting the ball in play. The leadoff hit a ball right at us, and we don’t catch it. I think that E5 kind of set the table,” PC coach Chris Newsome said. “Their kid threw

well. Nothing overpowering but enough mix to miss some barrels. Other than Johnathan’s hard-hit ball to lead off the game, I don’t know if we had another one.

“Knowing it could be a potential matchup in the postseason, it was pretty disappointing to come out to lay an egg like that. But the beauty of baseball is we get another shot at it. We get to turn the page. Hopefully we can come out and show our true colors on Thursday.”
