PUTNAM COUNTY LIBRARY SCHEDULE: JUNE 2024
Hennepin flips the switch on Little League lights
By DEREK BARICHELLO dbarichello@shawmedia.com
Lighting the Hennepin Little League field has been a project decades in the making.
More than 40 years ago, Quentin Buffington said he remembers being 12 years old, playing on the field and hearing about the need for lights.
“It was always too expensive,” Buffington said.
Wednesday night, Hennepin Little League played its first night game under the lights, thanks to contributions from a number of Putnam County area businesses. A ceremony was conducted before the game with Buffington as emcee, including Marquis Energy, which provided $10,000 for the project, and Hennepin Village President Kevin Coleman.
Buffington worked closely with John Rice of John Rice Electric to bring the project to fruition. The initial price tag was more than $200,000, but through donations of time, materials and equipment, the project was completed for $79,000.
“We weren’t going to be stopped,” Buffingon said of the determination to get the project done. “We kept telling everyone, ‘it’s for the kids.’ And they’d come through.”
Along with John Rice Electric, Marquis Energy, Par Electrical Contractors, Ameren, Judd Construction,
Revolve Lighting, Illinois Valley Surveying, Putnam County School Board, Hennepin Boat Store, Gatza Electric, S&S Underground, Putnam County Painting and Illinois Valley Excavating contributed to the project. Buffington said almost all the labor was donated, with many skilled workers offering to help at just the cost of the materials. The light poles had to meet specific requirements and Ameren was able to provide the majority of them.

St. Bede senior receives Granville American Legion scholarship
Dove plans to attend St. Ambrose University
SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
Granville American Legion Post 180 reviewed the applicants April 9 for the 2024 Veteran’s Scholarship.
Erin Dove, a senior from St. Bede Academy, was unanimously approved to receive the post’s annual award.
Although Dove lives in Princeton and commuted to St. Bede for her education, she is related to Terry Dove, a member of Granville Post 180, which made her eligible to apply for this scholarship. She also is related to Jeff Dove, an E-5 who served in the U.S. Navy in Scotland 1989-1992 and later in South Carolina.
In addition to her outstanding academic achievements, Dove participated in many of the school’s extracurricular activities including the yearbook staff, FFA, Student Council, Scholastic Bowl and the Prom Committee.
Her activities in the community included WIN (Women’s Inspired Network), the Vietnam Traveling Wall, Rotary Club’s Christmas Lights program and the American Legion Annual Breakfast. Her other activities included the reception of Honor
Flight at the Quad Cities where she spearheaded the welcome home thank you cards from veterans of this area. She also was involved in the 2022 WIN golf outing and as a Chapel Hill Community Event volunteer and collections for the food pantry.
Members of the post also were impressed with her essay on the meaning of patriotism to her. She stressed the importance of showing respect and devotion and honoring those who served on the front lines in defense of the nation.
“Patriotism is being proud to say that for generations my family has served in the armed forces,” she wrote. “It is a combination of loyalty and love and faithfully supporting your country.”
Dove plans to attend St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, majoring in nursing. A formal certificate of the scholarship was presented to Dove at the post’s May 14 meeting. Her family joined her at the meeting in the Granville American Legion building to witness the formal presentation of the certificate authorizing the scholarship. Upon receipt of Dove’s official enrollment at St. Ambrose University, a check in the amount of $1,000 will be forwarded to the university’s financial aid office. The money can be used by Dove for tuition and fees and other typical expenses.

The Putnam County Rotary Club will host Human Trafficking – A Real and Present Danger at 6:30 p.m. Thursday June 6, at LJ’s Garden Cafe, 114 N. Chicago St., Magnolia.
Right here in central Illinois, even here in the Illinois Valley, there are instances of human trafficking of domestic workers, profiteering shops, sex workers and others who are deceived into relationships driven by financial manipulation, forced dependency, physical threats and abuse. How do you recognize the danger?
host human trafficking awareness program
How can our youth avoid alluring offers that sound too good to be true, finding out only too late how untrue they are?
These are subjects of concern shared by many organizations including Rotary Clubs, here and worldwide. Putnam County Rotary will host Toni Lucas, a speaker who advocates for men, women and children who are victims of human trafficking. She will share insights into the massive and growing scope of human trafficking and what we can do to be more aware, and to prevent or report instances within our local communities.
Lucas has worn many hats over her past years and several careers, including more than 40 years as a legal secretary in the Illinois Valley, office management in England and presently as
pastor of the United Methodist Church in Albany, Illinois. Among her community work and activism, Lucas organized Rotary’s District Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force and is a member of the global, online Rotary Club to End Human Trafficking. Her passion for justice has led her to actively participate in her Church’s Anti-Racism Task Force, and in Civil Rights pilgrimages to many communities in southern states.
The stories of human trafficking shared by Lucas are true, not merely statistics out of a magazine. The event will be open to the public on a first-reserved basis. The dinner and program begin at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will cost $15 a person. To reserve a spot, text 815-8661975 or email to PutnamCountyRotary@gmail.com by June 4.

State parks are contenders for the nation’s best scenery
WANDER WOMAN
How many Illinois state parks have you visited?
If you live in La Salle, Bureau or Putnam counties, I would wager the answer is at least two or three. You can likely check a few of the local ones off the list. Starved Rock, Matthiessen, Buffalo Rock, Illini, Gebhard Woods …
But what about the rest of the parks in Illinois’ 55,499 square miles of land?
Until February, I didn’t know how many parks and nature areas existed in Illinois. I never thought to tally them until I saw a WGN report about two Chicago friends who have set a goal to visit every state park and state-operated natural area. All 132 of them.
Stephanie Swieca and Emma Magrady are documenting their effort on the Fresh Air Friendship blog. The pair launched the website in September 2021 after a girls trip to Utica, during which they explored

In their introductory blog post, they explain how Swieca spent her free time after their girls weekend compiling a spreadsheet of all state

parks and nature areas in Illinois. When she mused about visiting all of them, Magrady jumped on board with the idea.
In the time since, they’ve documented visits to more than 30 parks, including many of Starved Rock Country’s most notable. A July 2023
headline on their website declares, “Starved Rock State Park: The one you’ve been waiting for!”
For several years, my husband and I have been working toward a goal similar to Swieca’s and Magrady’s. We’re slowly but steadily visiting all 63 U.S. national parks.
Even though state parks aren’t officially part of our exploration goals, many of them rival their national counterparts. In recent years, we’ve sought stops at nearby state parks during journeys to national parks. Four of my top 10 favorite vacation hikes have been at state parks: Baxter State Park in Maine, Catskill State Park in New York, Judge C.R. Magney State Park in Minnesota and Goblin Valley State Park in Utah (with the nearby Little Wild Horse Canyon).
Those favorites stand in the company of hikes at national parks like Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Shenandoah and Acadia.
As impressive as the rest of the country is, I still enjoy returning to familiar hiking grounds. Maybe I’m biased as an Illinoisan born and raised, but among all of those grand

destinations across the country, I believe the state parks of Illinois – particularly those found in Starved Rock Country – can compete.
Coming home from hikes through Utah slot canyons or along Maine coastlines or up western mountains is never a disappointment when I know there are places like Matthiessen’s Lake Falls and Starved Rock’s Council Overhang and the marshy stretch of Illinois & Michigan Canal north of Dee Bennett Road.
Our region’s state parks are grand enough that they inspired the Fresh

Coleman said he lives near the field and couldn’t tell the lights were on when they were being tested because of the precision of their placement and modern lighting.
To celebrate the new lights, free pork chop sandwiches were provided at the concession stand from Hennepin Food Mart.
