4-H SPIN Club plants seedlings at Henry Methodist Church

Program cultivates children’s gardening knowledge and skills

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

Members of the Learn Grow Share SPIN Club recently planted seedlings they nurtured from seed at Henry Methodist Church. This hands-on experience marks the midpoint of their hard work and learning over the past months.

Learn Grown Share SPIN is a special interest club for Marshall-Putnam 4-H Club members. Under the guidance of 4-H leaders and master gardeners, children delve into various aspects of gardening. The club members have learned about the importance of healthy soil and the benefits of composting. Members also explored the world of worms and their role in enriching the soil, ensuring a thriving garden ecosystem.

Starting seeds is both an art and a science, which the young gardeners embraced with enthusiasm. They mastered the techniques of seed starting and learned the principles of square-foot gardening, which focuses on effectively spacing plants to

maximize their growth and yield in limited spaces.

“This experience has been incredibly rewarding for our club members,” Bethany Salisbury, the 4-H Learn Grow Share SPIN Club leader, said in a news release.

“They have not only learned essential gardening skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for nature and the food we eat.”

The 4-H Learn Grow Share SPIN Club is committed to empowering youths through hands-on learning experiences. By growing their own seedlings and understanding the science behind gardening, members can develop skills and passion for sustainable living and healthy eating.

This program is funded through a grant from the University of Illinois Extension, with soil donations from Saratoga Homestead and Home Depot. The garden site, provided by Henry Methodist Church, has become a hub of learning and community collaboration.

The fresh produce grown by 4-H Club members not only will be featured in their 4-H show exhibits but also shared with the community through local blessing boxes to reach people in need.

For information about the 4-H Learn Grow Share SPIN Club and its programs, call the Marshall-Putnam Extension office at 309-634-2356.

35 students honored at IVCC Adult Education Recognition event

Thirty-five students were recognized for their accomplishments during Illinois Valley Community College’s 43rd annual Adult Education Recognition Event on May 22.

As she presided over her first Adult Education recognition, IVCC President Tracy Morris recognized participants’ dedication and courage, acknowledging the effort it takes to walk into an unfamiliar place to take the steps necessary toward change.

“Today is the celebration of all you have sacrificed and your hard work and courage. As you go out to make a difference in the world, all of us here at IVCC are so proud of the dedication, commitment and work that you have put in to reach your dreams. We thank you for choosing IVCC to be a part of your journey,” Morris said.

Graduates Ahlora Sbarbaro and Maren Barreras of Mark outlined their journeys to reach this moment of triumph.

After the deaths of her father and sister when she was a teen, Sbarbaro said she “let grief consume me. While I was trying to navigate through my grief, I allowed it to rip away everything I had ever worked for and dreamed of for myself. I ended up dropping out the last semester of my senior year in high school.”

Sbarbaro was determined to pass the General Educational Development test to show her young daughter that “anything she sets her mind and heart to she can achieve.” She also thanked her mother for her ever-

At the end of the program, Morris led a moment of silence remembering one of the group’s classmates, Anna Michelle Martin, 19, of Streator, who died in the fall. Morris also commended Adult Education instructors and staff for supporting and encouraging classmates after Martin’s death.

Names of the 23 Illinois high school diploma graduates were read by Ryan Myers, assistant superintendent of the La Salle, Marshall, Putnam County Regional Office of Education. Citizenship instructor Sandra Woest read the names of the two naturalized citizens, 11 Bridge to Careers completers and three ICAPS completers in attendance.

Graduates and completers are:

GED: Maren Vasquez-Barreras, Alyssa Bugiyne, Andrew Butler, Benjamin Cannone, Jasmine Davis, Deidra Dennis, Mckenzi Donaway, Gabriella Godinez, Sylvia Godinez, Olivia Harlan, Dennis Hogan, Jacob Hurt, Caile Mathas, Elaine McCubbin, Jay Mendez, Autumn Miller, Evelyn Orozco, Austin Orr, Isaiah Pelc, Laura Rix, Tammy Sarabia, Ahlora Barbaro and Tracy Welling

lasting love and support and her GED instructor Kathy Drapa for believing in her.

Barreras was recognized for participating in the Bridge to Careers class and the Integrated Career and Academic Preparation System program and for earning her high school diploma.

“If it was not for all the extraordinary instructors and staff, I would’ve never been as motivated as I am today. When I started at IVCC, I never thought my dreams could soon become my reality. After completing my adult education, as well as my CNA certificate, my dreams have never felt so close,” Barreras said.

ICAPS completers: Maren Vazquez-Barreras, Alyssa Bugiyne and Laura Rix

Bridge completers: Maren Vasquez-Barreras, Rocio Cabello, Benjamin Cordova, Yeimy Forero, Patricia Guzman, Lin Lin, Yessenia Melesio, Carmela Aguilera, Mili Patel, Milena Ribeiro and Tracy Welling

COLLEGIATE SUMMER BASEBALL: PISTOL SHRIMP

TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY

1961: The newly formed American Basketball League adopts the 3-point field goal.

2005: Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal beats unseeded Mariano Puerta of Argentina in four sets to win the French Open men’s singles title. Nadal becomes the youngest men’s Grand Slam champion since 1990.

NEWSTRIBUNE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Pistol Shrimp hope for ‘special summer’

Last summer, the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp struggled early in the season, going 3-7 in their first 10 games.

Manager John Jakiemiec hopes to change that this season.

“What shot us in the foot the last couple years is we stumbled out of the gate and had some slow starts, so we’ve basically been chasing where we’ve just kind of been competing for the second half division win,” Jakiemiec said. “We’re going to talk [when everyone reports], and that’ll be one of the things we talk about is we need to get off to a better start this year.”

The Shrimp, who finished 11-15 in the first half and 27-31 overall last season, hope the return of double digit players helps the team start better.

Illinois Valley’s home opener is at 7:05 p.m. Thursday against the Normal CornBelters.

“We have 10 or 11 guys coming back from last year, which is a huge advantage from my perspective in terms of player expectations and passing on the culture of how we do things,” Jakiemiec said. “In the early part of the year I’ll be leaning on those guys.”

Hall graduate Chance Resetich, an infielder, and Ottawa alumnus Jared Herzog, a pitcher, are among the players returning to the Shrimp.

Also returning are pitchers Finn O’Meara, David Andolina, Daniel Strohm and Evan Clark, outfielders Joseph Stagowski and Tyler Dorsch and infielders Jake Ferguson and Jack Johnston.

Outfielder Louis Perona, who graduated from Illinois Wesleyan and will be a graduate transfer at Cincinnati next year, will join the team for the second half.

“It’s one of those rosters where on paper we’re going to score enough runs, but we have a lot of pitchers who haven’t necessarily gotten a lot of work this spring for their collegiate teams, and this is a really important summer for them to get their work in because they’ll be counted on next year,” Jakiemiec said. “I would say if our pitching comes around, we’ll be just fine.”

Returners Stagowski and Dorsch are expected to be key offensive contributors.

Stagowski hit .333 last summer with six doubles, 13 RBIs and nine runs in 16 games, while Dorsch hit .262 with six doubles, one triple, a home run, 24 runs and 17 RBIs in 44 games.

“Joe Stagowski had a stellar year for Rockford,” Jakiemiec said. “He not only hit for power but for average also. He’s one of those guys who I think really improved. He had a good year for us last summer and, statistically, it looks like he took another step up. We’re really excited to have Joe back.

“Tyler Dorsch had a great summer for us last year. He hit at the top of the lineup for Concordia and had another great year.”

Several newcomers are expected to have good offensive numbers as well.

Ryan Niedzwiedz hit No. 3 for Southern Illinois-Edswardville, Pambos Nicoloudes was an every day player for Illinois-Chicago as a freshman, Kyle Gibson was the No. 2 hitter for Millikin and Makana Olaso, who will play at Hawaii next year, is a catcher who led California junior colleges in home runs this spring.

“He’s a big guy at 6-3, 235 with incredible power numbers,” Jakiemiec said about Olasko. “I think he’s going to be a guy who will be in the heart of our lineup.”

Returners Andolina and Clark will be counted on the mound.

Andolina was 2-1 with a 4.69 ERA last summer with 61 strikeouts in 552/3 innings, while Clark, who just transferred to Illinois from Southern California, was 1-0 with a 3.95 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 132/3 innings.

Josh Katz is expected to be a big contributor once he joins the Shrimp following Pennsylvania’s postseason run. Katz and the Quakers open NCAA regional play Friday against Virginia.

“Penn just won the Ivy League, so we’re excited for Josh going to a regional,” Jakiemiec said. “He was one of the main pitchers for Penn, so we know he’s going to be a front-end guy for us.”

Jakiemiec also expects Central Florida freshman Kyle Rossy to be a pitcher the Shrimp can rely on.

With a strong offense and potential for the pitching staff, Jakiemiec said he hopes the Pistol Shrimp can return to the playoffs after missing out last summer.

ALEX RODRIGUEZ

Putnam County, sophomore, track and field

Putnam County sophomore Alex Rodriguez did not initially join track and field by his choice, but has found he enjoys the sport and has a talent for it.

Rodriguez won the discus (43.97 meters) and shot put (14.36) at the Class 1A Deer Creek-Mackinaw Sectional to qualify for the state meet in both events.

At state, he finished 13th in the discus (43.14) and 23rd in the shot put (13.64).

“Alex has shown his dedication since freshman year,” Putnam County coach Chuck McConnell said. “He loves the sport. He’s definitely an elite athlete and has a great work ethic. I’m very proud of his accomplishments.”

For his performance, Rodriguez was voted the NewsTribune Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Sullivan’s, Grasser’s Plumbing & Heating and Central Bank. Rodriguez answered some questions from NewsTribune sports editor Kevin Chlum.

When did you start doing track and field and how did you get into it?

I started throwing in seventh grade. My parents forced me into track to at least try it. That’s when I found out that I had a gift for throwing and I liked it.

What do you like about track and field?

I enjoy watching all the different events. It’s all so great how everyone is talented in their events and the techniques are just so inspiring.

What makes you a good thrower?

I practice my technique and lift almost every day of the week to try to be the best I can be.

What are your thoughts on your performance at sectional?

I felt I did pretty good. A foot PR (personal record) in shot put along with a decent discus throw to qualify. I definitely did the best I can and plan to come back better and stronger for next season.

What is your favorite sports memory?

For me, it was winning the sectional and advancing mainly because it was my first big achievement in my sports career and I still have many years left to improve.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Italy. The architecture is unique. The culture seems good and the food looks amazing.

With what food could you win an eating contest?

Pizza. I feel I would easily have an advantage if there ever was a pizza-eating contest.

What is a movie or TV show you never get tired of watching?

I can watch “Happy Gilmore” over and over again without ever getting sick of it.

If you could get advice from any athlete, who would it be and why?

Joe Kovacs (Olympic medalist). He is one of the best shot put throwers ever. I would ask advice from him because most throwers are tall, but he is 6 feet tall just like me.

What are your plans for the summer?

This summer I plan to compete with Project Sprint in Lowpoint-Washburn to further improve on my distances for next season and also attend some college camps.
