With a high temperature of 90 degrees, several children cooled off and took part in some friendly competition Saturday during the Granville Days water fights.
Trophies were awarded to the top three finishers in four age groups. The contest took place at Hopkins Park.
Rylie Konczak finished first in the 5- and 6-year-old division, followed by Emmett Gibson and Kaden Wiley.
Kadon Quick took the crown in the 7- and 8-year-old division, finishing ahead of Brayden Cox and Anna Bell.
In the 9- and 10-year-old division, TJ Kramarsic finished first, Gunner Perino second and Bryce Burris third.
In the 11- and 12-year-old division, Emily Konczak finished first and Zoee Weeks was the runner up.
The event was organized by the Granville Fire Department with assistance from its Putnam County neighbors and other volunteers.
Granville, Hennepin and Standard fire departments are looking for volunteer firefighters. For information, message the Granville Fire Department on Facebook or call 815-339-2600.

Cops 4 Cancer event raises more than $104K

Cops 4 Cancer announced Wednesday that its two-day Summer Event in Cedar Point generated more than $104,000, and that amount continues to grow as more donations come in.
Cops 4 Cancer helps families in their fight against cancer by providing financial assistance in a variety of ways.
The nonprofit organization highlighted a number of community groups that brought together the event. Grill masters led by Jason Quinn and United Rentals Peru provided more than 500 burgers, 480 brats and 500 hot dogs, Cops 4 Cancer said. Mareta Ravioli of Leonore prepared more than 320 pounds of pasta, Pizzas by Marchelloni-Peru delivered 20 pizzas throughout the day, and Four Star Family Restaurant fried up 500 pieces of chicken. Olive Garden and Walmart Distribution Center also contributed. Johannes Bus Service – Peru ran a continuous loop for more than seven hours. Physical therapist to speak at retired teachers meeting

Tim Collins, physical therapist for OSF Central Illinois Region, will speak to the Marshall-Putnam Retired Teachers at their 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, meeting at the First United Presbyterian Church, 611 Wirt St., Henry.
Collins adjusts his presentation to meet the needs of his audience but focuses on the need for good nutrition and exercise.
A native of Toluca, Tim Collins, 48, received his doctor of physical therapy degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport in 2005. He formerly worked at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley and Athletico Physical Therapeutic clinic in Lacon.
He and his wife, the former Rachel Snow, live in Lacon with two of their five children. The oldest is a nurse in Denver and the next two are serving in the military.
The public is invited to join the MPRTA for tips on living a healthy life.

Mobile science center makes stop in Granville

The Illinois Natural History Survey Traveling Science Center made its way Tuesday to Hopkins Park in Granville. The 320-square-foot mobile classroom features informative, engaging exhibits on biodiversity and natural resources.
Visitors learned about the types of habitats and species diversity of their
region, as well as ways to protect against threats to that diversity.
Since 2006, the center has visited more than 150 communities and 200 public events while providing structured school programs for up to 30,000 students each year.
Sponsors were North Central Bank, Granville National Bank, Boggio’s Orchard & Produce and Financial Plus Credit Union.

Wilma Lorene (Baker) Nielsen-Schroeder, 100, of Peru, passed away Monday, July 29, 2024 at Manor Court of Peru.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 5, 2024 at Emmaus Lutheran Church, McNabb with Rev. Robert Kinas, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Hennepin. Visitation will be held 9:30-10:50 AM Monday at the church.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home, Lostant.
Wilma was born February 29, 1924 in Rutland to Delbert and Ruth (Arndt) Baker. She married Runnard A. Nielsen. She later married Willard Schroeder and then Kirby Chapman. Wilma left school in the ninth grade to help care for her ailing mother. She went on to be a caregiver her entire life and was also able to obtain her GED. She also worked in food service and retired as the head cook at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. She served as Hope Township Supervisor. Her greatest joy was being a farm wife, mother and grandmother.
Wilma was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church, McNabb, a lifetime member of Magnolia American Legion Auxiliary, and she volunteered at the Illinois Veterans Home,
LaSalle for 20 years. Wilma loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Carribean. Survivors include four children, Judith (John) Soulsby of Ottawa, Jim (Terry) Nielsen of Warren, Joyce (Mark) Wright of Georgetown, and Jerry (Jill) Nielsen of Magnolia; 12 grandchildren, Joe (Connie) Soulsby, Jack (Stacey) Soulsby, Ruthanne (Todd Boe) Chapman, Rosemary (Phil) Walker, Cara (Craig) Dobernecker, Todd Nielsen, Kristina (Andrew) Baumann, Kevin (Samantha) Wright, Katie (Miles) Chiotti, Alan (Emily) Nielsen, Rebecca (Kyle) Hanks, and Kyle Wright; 17 great-grandchildren, Jacey, Monica, Mitchell, Drew, Kelsey, Emily, Madilyn, Adelina, Aleia, Arabella, Elianna, Iner, Runnard, Engeline, Elsie, Charlotte, and Otto; three great-great grandchildren, Vincent, Vittoria, and Denver;
one sister, Hetta Grasser of Peru; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three husbands; her parents; seven brothers, Calvin, Edwin, Delbert Jr., Melvin, Richard, Dale, and Kenneth; and two sisters, Myna and Esther. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Illinois Veterans Home, LaSalle. Jerry L. Mooberry of Lacon passed away Tuesday morning, July 9, 2024 at home surrounded by family after a long hard fight with cancer. Born November 15, 1939 in Henry, Illinois to Lowell & Elizabeth (Davis) Mooberry, he married Marianne (Mary) Ellena in Ottawa on May 8, 1974.
Jerry’s passion was farming, taking over when his dad passed and continuing until this spring with help from his kids. Having family around was an important part of Jerry’s life. He resided in town and often stated that if he lived on the farm, he wouldn’t have anywhere to go.
He also worked construction, and later was a grain inspector for Peoria Grain Inspection & then Kankakee Grain Inspection.

PUTNAM – Wendy J. Flynn, age 66, died Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Liberty Village in Princeton.
Wendy was born on January 25, 1958 in Elmhurst the daughter of George and Josephine (Nicoletti) Bowdish. She married Timothy Flynn on June 11, 1993 in Villa Park. Wendy was past President of the Villa Park Lions Club. She was employed as a loan officer with the Villa Park Bank for 26 years. For the past 14 years Wendy was the
sons, Todd (Jan) of Lowpoint, Corey of Lacon, two daughters, Mandy (Lance White) Mooberry of rural Washburn, Lori (Wes) Fitzjarrald of Arcadia, Florida; grandchildren MacKenzie (Jake) Durst of Lacon, Gabe & Leah Mooberry of Lacon, Sierra Lishman (Jerod Sarver) of Effingham, Kohl Dunshee of Sparland, Eli Lishman (Larissa Spellious) of Lacon, Gavin White (Payton Staser) of Washburn, Lisa (Tim) Cunningham of Andros Town, Bahamas; great grandchildren Eleanor Durst, Kade & Porter Sarver, Riley Lishman, Kacy (Stephen) Prather, 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, Scott (Nancy) Mooberry of Lacon, Ron (Holly) Mooberry of Henry; four sisters Elizabeth Allen, Mary (Gary) Beall, Linda Mooberry & Janet Mooberry, all of Lacon; and many nieces & nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter-in-law, Brandi Lishman-Mooberry.
Services were Sunday, July 14, 2024. Private burial service will be at a later date.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 10, 2024 from noon to ? at the Henry American Legion. Arrangements were completed by the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Wendy’s Warriors.

The Pistol Shrimp scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to take the lead and then put up a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth to pull away to an 11-5 victory over the visiting Thrillville Thrillbillies in the Prospect League’s Western Conference Championship Game at Peru’s Schweickert Stadium on Saturday,
The victory sends Illinois Valley – now 37-21 on the season – onto this week’s Prospect League Champion -
ship Series, a best-of-3 format against REX Baseball. The series opened Monday in Terre Haute, Indiana, returning to Peru for Games 2 and 3.
It is the first Prospect League Championship Series appearance for the Shrimp, who formed in 2019.
Pistol Shrimp leadoff man Ryan Niedzweidz started a big night Saturday with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. He adding another homer and finishing with three runs scored and four batted in.
Fellow middle infielder Kyle Gibson provided two hits and an RBI, as did Nick Weaver. Lucas Smith was 4 for 5, while Tyler Dorsch and Will Ashley each drove home two runs for Illinois Valley.
Joseph Martin (2 IP, 2 ER, 2 K) earned the pitching win in relief of starter Evan Clark (2 IP, 3 ER, 4 K). Andrew Ressler (5 IP, 0 R, 4 K) earned the long save, allowing only one hit.
