New state senator representing Putnam County takes office

State Sen. Chris Balkema, R-Channahon, the newly elected senator for Illinois’ 53rd District, was sworn in Wednesday as part of the 104th General Assembly. He succeeds Sen. Tom Bennett.
“I am honored to represent the 53rd District in the Illinois Senate and humbled by the trust placed in me to serve our communities,” Balkema said. “As I step into this role, I want to congratulate Sen. Bennett on his remarkable 10 years of service. His dedication to our district and to the people of Illinois has left a lasting legacy, and I wish him the best in this next chapter of his life.”
Balkema, who won the Republican nomination for the 53rd District Senate seat in March, ran unopposed in the fall general election. Since his elec-
tion, he said he has focused on meeting the 108 mayors in the district, which spans 13 counties, to better understand local needs and priorities.
Balkema was first elected to the Grundy County Board in 2010. He has served as chairman since 2016. In addition to his public service, Balkema has a 31-year career with Caterpillar, holding leadership roles. He is active in his church, previously served on the Grundy County Economic Development Council and held an advisory role on the Taylor University Business Advisory Council. Balkema holds a bachelor’s in business systems from Taylor University and a master’s in business administration from Bradley University. He and his wife of 26 years reside in Channahon and are parents to two sons in college.

Kimrey Darrell “Kim” Alleman passed away Friday, January 3, 2025 at Country Comfort Home in Henry, IL. He was 70 years old.
Kim was born January 15, 1954 in Spring Valley, IL, son of Darrell and Jeanne (Anderson) Alleman.

Larry E. Zielinski, 73 of Mark died January 5, 2025 in OSF St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Rockford.

Larry was born October 8, 1951 in LaSalle to Walter and Sarah (Haage) Zielinski. He
and Masters Degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He farmed his entire life and was a teacher at Henry High School before his employment with the Illinois Department of Human Services where he worked to help local families, eventually becoming the director.
Kim enjoyed numerous activities throughout his life. He was a member of Farm House Fraternity while on the University of Illinois campus and later became a member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. He was a member of the Putnam County Central Republican Committee serving in leadership positions including chairman. For many years, Kim was a member of the Magnolia Cemetery Board and served as treasurer.
Kim enjoyed athletics. During high school, he was a member of several Putnam County
married Rena Miller March 4, 2006.
Larry worked as a machinist and later as an engineer at Mennie Machine Company for 41 years.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife Rena of Mark, a daughter Julie Zielinski of Tampa, FL, a brother Robert “Raz” (Sue) Zielinski of Sulphur Springs, TX, a stepson Jeff (Stacy) Miller of Tonica and 2 step-grandchildren; Landen and Kaitlyn.

Survivors include his children Benjamin Alleman of Granville, IL and Roxanna (husband Aaron) Anderson of Gladstone, Michigan, brother Scott (wife Dianne) Alleman of Granville, IL, sisters Debbie (husband Dennis) Kimme of Mahomet, IL and Jan (husband J.R.) Chance of McClure, IL. Also surviving are his 5 grandchildren, Keegen Taylor, Liam Alleman,
Ezekiel, Ariah, and Elin Anderson and 2 great-grandchildren, Vivienne and Vermilia Taylor.
Kim was preceded in death by his parents Darrell and Jeanne Alleman.

Siebert, Kneebone enshrined into PC Hall of Fame

Two Panther standouts, Doug Siebert (1981) and Ashley Kneebone (2000), were enshrined into the Putnam County High School Sports Hall of Fame between the boys basketball games Friday night at RM Germano Gymnasium.
Siebert played four years of basketball and baseball. He was a three-year varsity letter winner in basketball and a four-year varsity letter winner in baseball.
Some of his basketball accolades include being named to the Hall Holiday All-Tournament Team during his junior and senior seasons and to the Tri-County All-Conference and TriCounty Conference All-Tournament teams his senior year. Siebert received All-State Honorable Mention following his senior season in which he led the team in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and rebounds.
In baseball, Siebert was a member of the Panthers’ 1978 state team. He was selected to the Tri-County All-Conference Team in both his junior and senior years, leading the team in batting.
In his senior year, he hit .394, collecting 43 hits with 11 doubles, 30 runs and 22 RBIs. He was an All-State selection and represented Putnam County on the North team. He had such a keen
eye at the plate, coach Ken Jenkins said Siebert struck out 19 times in more than 400 at-bats
Siebert went on to have a highly successful baseball career at IVCC. Kneebone was a three-sport stand-
out at PC, playing volleyball, basketball and softball. She was named PC’s Female Athlete of the Year in the 19992000 school year.
She was a two-year varsity letter winner in volleyball, leading the area in blocks in both her junior and senior years.
In basketball, she was a three-year varsity letter winner, named FirstTeam Tri-County All-Conference and First-Team NewsTribune All-Area in both her junior and senior years.
In her senior basketball season, Kneebone led the area in rebounds, steals and shooting percentage. She was second in the area in scoring.
On the diamond, she had 156 hits and 132 RBIs for the PC softball team with a .585 career batting average as a three-year varsity letter winner.
She was named First-Team TriCounty All-Conference and NewsTribune All-Area following both her junior and senior years.
She was named the NewsTribune Softball Player of the Year following her senior season in which she led the area in hits, runs, home runs, RBIs and fielding percentage while earning Second-Team All-State honors.

The Putnam County Pumas sixthgrade basketball team defeated Mendota Holy Cross 29-20 to capture the Oglesby Holy Family Tournament on Saturday, finishing undefeated.

Blake Baker captured a first-place gold medal and will advance to the state competition in March.
Matthew Schennum earned a third-place bronze medal.
“Both boys did an excellent job and had a lot of fun,” PC coach Wendy Lewis said.
Putnam County High School will hold its Special Olympics Cool School Polar Plunge on Friday, March 14 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the high school parking lot/west yard area.
Lewis said by plunging and/or donating, “You are supporting the Special Olympic Illinois athletes across the state, helping to provide them with life-changing programming. This includes year-round training and competition, as well as leadership, personal development, and health education opportunities.
“We need 30 people to sign up to plunge, so hopefully we reach that. Our goal is $3,000.”
