County employment picture evolves By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Despite lower unemployment rates, McHenry County’s job outlook remains muted. Unemployment stood at 7.5 percent in October, down from 8.7 percent from the prior year. In September, the rate had fallen to 7 percent, the lowest since December 2008, when it was 7 percent. But those figures mask some of the challenges area businesses and workers could face in the coming years, according to a report by the McHenry County Workforce Network Board. Businesses throughout McHenry County are expected to hire more workers, but they may not have enough skilled laborers as older work-

ers retire and younger workers are retrained. McHenry County’s manufacturing sector, which accounts for 16.7 percent of all jobs in the county, will likely continue to shrink. Though other industries, such as health care, could see double-digit growth, many of those new jobs will pay less, according to the 2012 McHenry County Labor Report, released in the fall. There were 16,767 manufacturing jobs in the county in 2012 with average earnings per worker of $68,080. This key sector, which accounts for nearly a quarter of the county’s gross regional product, is projected to shrink 7 percent by 2015, shedding some 1,112 jobs. “What we’re seeing is more evolved

manufacturing,” said Pam Cumpata, president of the McHenry County Economic Development Corporation. “As manufacturing becomes more efficient, we may see a decline in the number of positions.” Conversely, health care and social assistance jobs will increase 10 percent by 2015, bringing 1,091 new jobs. But the average 2012 earnings per

worker in this segment was $51,840, about $16,000 less than in manufacturing, according to the report. Adjusted for inflation, the county’s per capita income dropped 8.6 percent between 2000 and 2010, the labor report found. The report predicted job growth in McHenry County would increase by 2.8 percent, going from 122,746 jobs in 2012 to 126,198 in 2015. That’s slower than the projected statewide job growth of 3.1 percent for the same time period and well below the national increase of 4.3 percent. Even so, the job growth is welcome, said Jeffery Poynter, director of the McHenry County Workforce Network Board.

“If we can stay above 2 percent, that will be good,” he said. Though unemployment persists, the numbers have leveled off more recently, said Julie Courtney, director of the McHenry County Workforce Network. “Is it rosy for everybody? Absolutely not. There’s still a lot of people out there in need,” she said. “But now there is a little glimmer of hope. Those people who are unemployed are getting back to work a little faster than in the last couple of years.” One problem is that some of the unemployed aren’t qualified for existing job opportunities. As older skilled workers prepare to retire, there’s a dearth of younger workers with the same skills to fill those jobs. The shortage is a major concern for local manufacturers. “This is getting to the point where it’s critical,” Courtney said. “As one manufacturer has said, if we don’t have the people to do this, these jobs and these businesses are going to go away. And if manufacturing is making up 16 percent of your [total employment], that’s going to have a huge impact on what the future of McHenry County looks like.” Fifty-four percent of workers in the county’s manufacturing sector are at least 45 years old. “All that industrial knowledge will be leaving the workforce,” Poynter said. “Who is going to replace them?” There’s a much smaller pool of prime age workers behind them, he said. The McHenry County Workforce Network, local manufacturers, and McHenry County College are working together to train younger workers to meet the demand. However, skilled workers may retire faster than new workers can be trained to replace them, in part because of the amount of training required for high-skill manufacturing, Poynter said. In addition to bolstering local training efforts, local officials are hoping McHenry County’s schools and other amenities will attract younger workers and their families to the area as the larger national economy improves, Poynter said. While some local companies are preparing to expand, others are treading water amid concerns about economic recovery and the looming fiscal

Sage Products, which was acquired by Chicago private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners in mid-December, is also gearing up for expansion in the future. “With Madison Dearborn Partners,

Sage will be looking to grow and expand our workforce here in Cary as well as our sales force domestically and internationally,” Sage Products President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Brown told the Northwest Herald in November. County Clerk’s ofﬁce keeps local democracy running

t times, it can feel like the election cycle never ends, but for McHenry County Clerk Katherine Schultz and her staff, it’s largely true.

Though elections occur only once or twice a year, wrapping up one and preparing for the next is an ongoing process.

On election night, after votes are counted, all election supplies and equipment is locked away for a required sixty days, in case a recount is needed. But once those sixty days are up, Schultz and her staff begins preparing for the next election, starting with assembling 212 precinct kits.

Workers test all voting equipment, and order repairs and replacements as needed. “We reuse most of the signs and forms that are used in each precinct. This saves the County money, and we’re recycling all of these products,” Schultz said.

Voter registration is an ongoing process, as is keeping track of deadlines for candidate ﬁling and placing legal notices. Once the deadlines pass, Schultz and her staff begin to prepare the ballots. The process is much more complicated than it sounds.

“Ballots differ by precinct, because there are different candidates for local ofﬁces, and local referendums. Each requires a different ballot style and in a primary election, there can be as many as 800 different ballot styles,” she said. Missing a ballot style is one of her biggest on-the-job fears, Schultz said. Once ballots are printed, they’re checked three more times, by six different people. Then comes a two-week process known as “lock and load.” “Each of our 150 optical scan and 150 touch screen units are pretested with audited test decks of ballots. Once everything checks out, they are sealed and distributed to townships for distribution to the precincts,” Schultz said. Election judges must be trained for Election Day and early voting. “We have 10 early voting sites, which we staff with election judges, one of each from the two major political parties serve at all times. For the November 2012 election, we voted approximately 32,000 people at early voting sites or through the mail,” she said. On Election Day, it takes over

1,000 election judges to staff the polls. “Just getting these judges assigned and making sure they are going to serve is a huge undertaking. Two staff members work on this for approximately a month prior to the election,” Schultz said. No votes are counted until the polls close. All precincts return their equipment to local drop off sites, where vote counts are sent by modem to the Tabulation Room at the County Building. For the November, 2012 election, 66 percent of McHenry County registered voters cast a ballot. Schultz joined the County Clerk’s office as a staff member in 1959 and was elected McHenry County Clerk for the first time in 1990. In addition to overseeing elections, the office extends taxes, maintains vital records, records and registers all notaries, keeps records of all the bills paid by the county and takes minutes for the County Board. Of her many duties, Schultz enjoys elections the most. “I find the process fascinating and always feel a real sense of accomplishment. There’s also the fact that everyone has a right to vote, even though they may not use it,” she said.

It takes our entire ofﬁce. Tempers may get short now and then, but it’s great to see everyone pulling together,” she said.

New Campaign Gives Chamber a Boost

hen creating a vision to help grow the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Executive Director Shari Gray, decided to think small.

Intrigued by the advertising campaign of a local bank, she wondered if a communityfocused strategy might be a good fit for the chamber. “We’re a smaller chamber, compared to some of the others in surrounding communities. It has a very intimate feel and our members all know each other. I can probably name every member,” said Gray, who became executive director two years ago. The chamber’s small size presents several advantages. “Since we’re not bogged down by lots of different focuses, we can have a one on one connection to our members. And our members are very loyal to one another. We strongly believe in supporting local businesses,” she said. With 225 members that represent an array of industries, including technology, communications, graphic design, insurance and financial services, health care and not-for-profits, ranging in size from homebased businesses to large manufacturing

“I worked with the membership committee to come up with something that everyone could buy into. Jon Wenzel of Myriad Creative Services came up with an idea and it went from there,” she said. Instead of downplaying the chamber’s diversity, the new campaign highlights it, with a new tagline, “I Am the Woodstock Chamber.” Large posters of chamber members in their businesses, along with the tagline are displayed in the chamber ofﬁce and on its website. Each poster also included a quote from the business owner about how they’ve beneﬁtted from chamber membership. A new logo shows a silhouette of the Woodstock Square with the organization’s name in white block style letters across the bottom. Not only is the campaign a way to market the chamber, it’s a way for members to market themselves. An all-digital package, includes a website banner, a social media spotlight with a biography, and a Monday morning email

blast, along with a graphic for the business to use on their website. A second package includes all of the digital features, plus print components including a front page article in the chamber’s newsletter, and a 3’ x 4’ poster, showing the business owner with the words “I Am The Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and Industry” behind them. Quarter-page ads in local print publications can be added for an extra charge. “The campaign has brought lots of comments from businesses outside the community about what a great effort it is. We’ve tried to ﬁnd our own unique brand and I think we ﬁnally hit on it,” she said. Each month the chamber offers a number of social and networking opportunities for members. In February, the group will hold its annual dinner and recognize a Woodstock resident with the Harold Buschkopf Award for distinguished community service. “It’s for someone who’s gone above and beyond, going into the community and sharing their talents,” Gray said. A Vermont native, Gray and her husband came to the area sixteen years ago, because of a job transfer. During that time, she

The small retailers have had challenges, but the majority have survived. There have been highs and lows, but we’re moving in the right direction, and a lot of people have stepped up to help us get there,” she said.

torical low, and home sales are rising, driven by a combination of low prices and interest rates, we see tremendous opportunity in this area,” Slack said. Home State Bank’s residential mortgage division began approximately ten years ago, but has grown to be one of the leading lenders in the area, generating $160 to $170 million in residential mortgages annually. The past year has brought steady increases in residential refinance, home construction loans and mortgages. “We work with government loan programs and third parties to get our customers the lowest rate possible,” Slack said. Though the fourth strategy is not new, it is the foundation not only for a successful bank, but also for a successful community. From the beginning, Home State Bank’s goal has been to create a better quality of life for their neighbors, and to work together to build a better community. Financial Services Entrepreneur Committed to Educating Clients

s an entrepreneur who has experienced her own life challenges, Paula DorionGray, CFP and President of Dorion-Gray Retirement Planning in Crystal Lake, finds her greatest reward guiding clients through their life’s challenges. “Whether it’s divorce, retirement or the death of a spouse, we guide people through life’s critical events. Helping a client understand how their finances work, and how to plan to maintain their lifestyle in retirement is one of the most rewarding things I do,” she said. Dorion-Gray’s financial services career spans three decades, yet she came into the field as a young mom entering the workforce to help her family. “I started as a receptionist at a financial planning firm, and I knew next to nothing about the industry. I thought it had to do with budgeting,” she said. But she quickly discovered a skill for grasping financial concepts. “I really enjoyed helping people sift through the complexity of their situation and make sense of it.” This was especially valuable when it came to working with women, and as a former stay-at-home mom, Dorion-Gray could identify with them. “A woman might come in after losing her husband of 35 or 40 years. He’s always managed the finances, but now she has to understand all of it.” Not only were the women coping with financial upheaval, but also the fear and grief that accompanies a major life change. Dorion-Gray recognized the importance of these emotions, and how learning to manage their own finances could alleviate a woman’s feeling of helplessness. “There are a lot of emotions that come with these events, and we deal with them, as we talk about a realistic approach to

finances,” she said. Men who have recently retired experience similar emotional upheaval. “It comes from no longer being identified with your career,” she said. In 1999, Gray faced a crossroads, when she decided to go the independent route. “I was executive vice president of a brokerage firm, but had been thinking about going out on my own for about three years. To be really successful, I knew I needed to choose between management or independence and I saw I could have more control over my future and my time by going independent,” she said. It was a scary decision. Shortly thereafter she was offered the chance to purchase an established financial services firm. “That added a lot more concern, but it was also a tremendous opportunity. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t taken that risk,” she said. After signing the papers on a Friday, Dorion-Gray didn’t sleep for two days, but when Monday morning arrived, she was ready. “I put my head down and said ‘okay, now you have to make it work.’ So I did,” Dorion-Gray said. In the years since, her risk has turned to reward, as she’s steered clients through three major economic downturns. The firm has grown to five advisors, including Dorion-Gray, along with a fivemember support team, and three additional professionals including her husband who works on strategic plans for both marketing the company and as part of the company’s overall management team and investment committee. In 2013, she plans to bring on one to two additional advisors. “We’ve seen so much growth in the past few years and the need for our comprehensive planning based

approach grows even greater every day,” she said. But she still loves helping women take charge of their finances. While younger couples often take a shared approach, it’s not uncommon for women, especially those 55 and older, to feel insecure about their financial knowledge. “You take on roles in marriage and for that generation, it typically meant the husband was the major breadwinner and handled the finances,” she said. She sponsors a women-only question and answer session each month, at Panera in Crystal Lake, on Tuesday morning between 9:30 and 10:30 (dates and times are available on their web-site). “In a mixed group, women often don’t ask questions because they feel self-conscious, or they think they should already know something. But there are no dumb questions and we shouldn’t shy away from knowing what money is all about.”

t’s an old local-boymakes-good story, and in the case of Tim Struthers, it’s true. BEST Under 40

Meet The Area’s Brightest Young Professionals

he 15 people selected as the “Best Under 40” for 2012 represent a small fraction of the talent pool in McHenry County. Forty-five people were nominated for the eighth annual “Best Under 40” edition of the Northwest Herald’s Business Journal. Several nominees from 2011 also were considered. A panel of three former winners picked the finalists. This year’s winners — eight women and seven men — include doctors, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and government officials. These leaders are, in their own words, “decorous,” “dependable,” “focused” and “driven.” It’s a diverse group. Most are over 35, but there are some notable exceptions. James Richter II, 36, is the assistant director of economic development for the city of Crystal Lake. Richter, along with the City Council and other city staff members, has helped new and existing businesses occupy more than 500,000 square feet of commercial space in Crystal Lake in the past year.

Carolina Schottland, 35, is an attorney with the Botto Gilbert Schottland Lancaster firm in Woodstock. She has been involved with the McHenry County Bar Association and the McHenry County Community Foundation, among other organizations. She helps guide future lawyers through job shadow programs and by serving on scholarship committees.

Connie Perez, 39, is the designer and proprietor of Aesthetics in Crystal Lake, where she helps customers discover their unique style, offering affordable clothes, accessories, and home decor. She recently started an internship program for college students hoping to enter the industry. Perez also co-founded a youth talent show at the Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake.

CAROLYN GRIEVES KEVIN CHARLES Kevin Charles, 39, is a construction engineer for the McHenry County Division of Transportation and a combat engineer officer in the Illinois National Guard, where he holds the rank of captain. In 2011, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his work in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on his fourth combat tour of Afghanistan, where he oversaw $240 million in construction projects.

Joanna Colletti, 35, is a civil engineer with the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission. She is also a member of the Fox River Grove Village Board. She has been involved with the Cary-Grove Jaycees for many years and in 2011 she served as state president of the Illinois Jaycees. She is married to Anthony Colletti, a 2009 Best Under 40 winner. Thomas A. Vaclavek Jr., 38, is a family law attorney with the firm Mohr & Vaclavek in Algonquin, where he recently became a partner. He serves on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County, the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, and the McHenry County Housing Authority. He also provides pro bono services to the poor with Prairie State Legal Services.

Amber Martin Johnson, 39, is an accountant and president of Martin Johnson Tax and Financial Services in Crystal Lake. She helps raise money for pediatric cancer research by organizing St. Baldrick’s Day events and is active in the Crystal Lake Kiwanis Club. She was born and raised in Crystal Lake and is a strong believer in the “pay it forward” concept.

Carolyn Grieves, 39, an engineer with Baxter & Woodman in Crystal Lake, focuses on municipal water systems and environmental systems. She helped create the Illinois Water Agency Response Network, a mutual aid system designed to help water utilities cope in the wake of emergencies and disasters. Jamie Rein, 34, is an attorney with the Aleen R. Tiffany law firm in Crystal Lake. After seven years as an assistant state’s attorney in the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, Rein recently entered private practice representing construction contractors and subcontractors and served as president of the McHenry County Bar Association where she helped create a mentoring program for law school graduates.

Chris Christensen, 37, is the area vice president for Neis Insurance in Crystal Lake. Christensen helped the agency to another year of double-digit growth in 2012. He serves on the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce board.

Emily Smith, 29, helped direct one of the area’s largest community service projects as McHenry County College’s coordinator of service learning and volunteerism. Some 1,088 students took part in the college’s Promise scholarship program, performing 30,000 hours of community service under her and others’ guidance. She also started the My Sister’s Dress event, which raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County by selling affordable dresses and accessories to local students for prom.

Nicholas Malooley, 36, is a chiropractor and runs Malooley Sport & Family Chiropractic in Cary. Malooley entered the field after a chiropractor helped him find relief from chronic pain as a teenager. He supports many local youth sports teams and his practice’s patient base has tripled in the last year.

Patrick McEneaney, 33, is a podiatric surgeon at the CaryGrove Foot and Ankle Center who recently earned board certification from the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. McEneaney is the varsity wrestling coach at Cary-Grove High School. He also offers free health lectures and regularly visits elderly patients at local senior homes.

Rafael Castaneda, 20, is a student studying social justice at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He has served as a mentor to other students and won several community service awards for his volunteer work at the Family Health Partnership Clinic in Woodstock. The clinic provides health care for the uninsured and the under-insured.

SARAH J. PONITZ Sarah J. Ponitz, 38, is the executive director of Faith in Action, a nonprofit agency that provides services to seniors to help them maintain independence. In 2012, McHenry County Magazine chose seven McHenry County women to receive the first Women of Distinction Awards for making it their passion to better their communities. The women have made a difference in McHenry County and are representative role models as leaders in their fields and communities. The featured women were nominated by a member of the community and selected by a special committee from a pool of nearly 45 nominees.

Kay Rial Bates has been involved with the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce since 1993. Today, as president/CEO of the chamber, her leadership has helped the chamber reach an all-time membership high of 700 participating businesses. She helped develop WINGS – the Women’s Interactive Networking Group – and constantly develops new and improves existing programs to meet member needs.

Nancy Fike was the administrator of the McHenry County Historical Society for 31 years. During her tenure, she helped lead the restoration of several historical buildings. She created a one-room schoolhouse program in which thousands of students have been able to share a 1900-era classroom experience as well as creating other new programs, such as Cider Fest, and Historic Halloween Hauntings – programs that have been duplicated in nearly every nearby city and town.

Diana Kenney has been recognized as building the Crystal Lake Downtown Main Street program into a Premier Main Street – a national designation which requires many distinctive achievements. She has become a top leader and recognized innovator throughout the state for the programs Downtown Crystal Lake now hosts, including the Johnny Appleseed Festival, Slidewalk Days and the Santa House. She also founded and serves as president of the Crystal Lake Historical Society.

As an International Red Cross worker, Suzanne Hoban helped refugees in a Malaysian village receive medical care. She opened the Family Health Partnership Clinic in 1996 with the expectation of serving 500 to 1,000 migrant and seasonal farm workers along with the uninsured and underinsured each year. Today, the clinic serves 750 patients a month. The clinic receives no state or federal funding; volunteers and part-time employees help run the facility, while Hoban writes grants and brings in a large portion of the clinic’s revenue each year.

In 1986, Lorraine Kopczynski began working at the Pioneer Center for Human Services as a caseworker. Fast forward 19 years, and Kopzynski became the organization’s president and CEO. Since taking on that role in 2005, the McHenry resident not only has helped the Pioneer Center survive the economic downturn, but she has helped the center expand, overseeing a $1.2 million renovation of its Dayton Street facilities and adding more than 1,600 clients.

Jail Brakers, an organization founded to help support families who have a loved one incarcerated, was Cheryl Niemo’s brainchild. Jail Brakers provides workshops, dinners, community service projects and educational opportunities for those affected by the stigma of having a family member in jail. Often, families in such situations feel fear, shame and isolation. Jail Brakers offers group support for these families and their children. The organization also works to stop the cycle that is prevalent for families of an incarcerated individual.

As founder of American Community Bank and Trust in 2000, Charie Zanck has proven herself as a leader and innovator in the fast-moving banking industry. With four local branches and nearly 70 employees, the bank has become one of the fastest growing privately owned banks in the country. She has served on the board of directors for more than half a dozen organizations and has been an advocate for several nonprofits, SHe was instrumental in raising more than $1 million for Centegra Health System through its annual Mad Hatters luncheon.
