Bumper crop of QBs Area potentially has 4 Division I quarterbacks this season
I
By JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com f Chris Katrenick’s recruiting map were marked with red dots representing the schools he visited, it would resemble a child’s freckled face. Nine of the 14 Big Ten Conference schools would get dots, as well as almost half the Mid-American Conference. Even a few Atlantic Coast Conference schools are sprinkled in for good measure. The Jacobs senior quarterback left no stone unturned and very few interested college football coaches unvisited. “As a quarterback, you have to look
at more than football and the flashy stuff,” Katrenick said. “Every guy, when they’re being recruited, wants to play right away.” Naturally, that is not going to happen with quarterbacks because, unlike other positions, only one plays at a time. That simple math, along with quarterback being arguably the most demanding position in all of sports, makes it tough to land scholarships and tougher to earn a starting job once a player is there. Katrenick is one of several local quarterbacks with NCAA Division I aspirations. So far, he is the only one of four highly regarded quarterbacks
who has committed, after accepting a scholarship offer from Bowling Green in April. Hampshire senior Jake Vincent is deep into the process, while the recruitments of Prairie Ridge’s Samson Evans and Huntley’s Eric Mooney, both juniors, are heating up. Katrenick had an advantage of starting as a sophomore and gained exposure in the offseason before his junior year. Katrenick also received sound advice from his high school coach Bill Mitz, quarterback coach Jeff Christensen from Throw It Deep Academy and Marian Central graduate Chris Streveler, who is now at his second D-I
school. “Chris said a dumbbell’s a dumbbell,” said Katrenick, who first met Streveler at a Marian youth football camp when Streveler was the Hurricanes quarterback. “Wherever you go, you have to put in the work, so the flashy stuff doesn’t really matter. His big thing was that I’d feel the right school when it came to me, that I’d know.” Katrenick, who is 6-foot-11/2 and 190 pounds, experienced that feeling at Bowling Green because of the players he met there.

Big-time talents
• QUARTERBACKS Continued from page 3 Quarterbacks must consider multiple factors during recruiting, starting with their own skills. Some fit better in pro style offenses, others prefer spreads, some like spreads that emphasize the quarterback as a dual threat. Quarterback recruits also might evaluate the team’s current quarterback situation, as they don’t want to get stuck behind a strong incumbent and spend their career as a backup. Streveler, who began his career at Minnesota before transferring to South Dakota this summer, said that was something he considered more this time. “Going to Minnesota, it wasn’t as big a factor because you see so many dudes go in as a fourth- or fifth-string guy and they end up starting a couple years later,” Streveler said. “Quarterback’s a crazy position like that. Guys are transferring all the time nowadays.” Streveler played sparingly at quarterback for Minnesota but is such a gifted athlete he tried other positions. Eventually, he earned his kinesiology degree in three years and graduated, meaning he could transfer anywhere and play right away. Streveler, the Northwest Herald Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012, is competing with last year’s starter Ryan Saeger for the Coyotes’ starting quarterback job in camp. Evans and Mooney do not yet have the size Streveler has at 6-2, 223, but they have similar speed, which affords them opportunities at other positions. Vincent, who threw for 2,665 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, is more of a throwing quarterback out of a spread offense. “It’s been up and down,” Vincent said. “Coaches love you some days. I want to have that at-home feeling when I get there. I want to be able to start as soon as possible and be a team leader.” Vincent attended six camps over the sumner at different level schools – D-I’s Illinois State, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois, D-III’s Carthage and Lake Forest, and NAIA Robert Morris. Mooney watched his brother Bret, Jacobs quarterback and the 2013 Northwest Herald Player of the Year, go through recruiting and leaned on him for tips with the process. Bret played two years at D-I Colgate and now is trying to win the starting job at D-II Ferris (Michigan) State. “Bret started going to camps hard his senior year, but a lot of schools had already offered (quarterbacks),” Mooney said. “So a lot of schools couldn’t make him an offer. They were like, ‘Where you been?’ That was a major thing I learned was go to camps early. Even though they might not offer

you, they have you on their board and you know they’re watching you.” Mooney, who played receiver and running back last season, moves to his natural position this fall where his speed will play a huge part. He hopes to prove himself as a dual-threat quarterback in a spread, read-option offense. When asked, Mooney calls himself a quarterback first. He realizes his speed could open doors at running back or receiver. Illinois likes him as a defensive back. Evans is different than the others because Prairie Ridge runs the triple-option, which is not as prevalent at D-I schools. He has an offer from Army, which runs option, but his offers from Central Michigan and Northern Illinois will be at running back or receiver. Evans worked out with quarterbacks at the camps he attended this summer, but he felt at a disadvantage. “I don’t have the knowledge of all the steps and everything when I go to camps,” he said. “It’s been a lot more difficult for me than [Katrenick or
Vincent].” Yet Evans possesses blazing speed and routinely is among the top 40-yard dash times wherever he goes. “Athleticism-wise, playing other positions could be more beneficial for me,” said Evans, the 2015 Northwest Herald Player of the Year. “It’s fun talking to the different coaches to see what they see me as and performing at different positions.” The road to finding a good offensive fit and playing time early in their career can be a bumpy one for quarterbacks. Streveler advised Katrenick not to get hung up on the level, but to look for coaches he likes and a chance to play. “Even if you go I-AA (FCS), if that’s your best opportunity to play, you’re going to college to play, not to sit and be a third-stringer,” Streveler said. “I told him don’t worry about it going to a big school, but go somewhere where you really like the coaches and you feel like you’re going to get a good opportunity to play.”
Height: 6-1 Weight: 190 Numbers: Mooney switches to quarterback after playing running back and receiver. He rushed for 980 yards and 17 touchdowns and caught 31 passes for four touchdowns. College: Undecided. Mooney attended several camps and has interest from Central Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Northern Illinois, among others. He has no offers yet and might be recruited for positions other than quarterback. JAKE VINCENT Hampshire, sr. Height: 6-2 Weight: 170 Numbers: Vincent threw for 2,665 yards and 31 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. He helped the Whip-Purs to the Class 6A playoffs and a 6-4 record. College: Undecided. Vincent is receiving the most D-I attention from Illinois State, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois.

ry County always has been a hotbed for linemen, and it has really spiked in recent years. “From camps that I’ve done, I talked to a number of Big Ten coaches,” Spoden said. “McHenry County is on the radar because of the (offensive) line. There’s going to be a ton of coaches flooding into this area in the next two to three years.” Bryan Bulaga is the highest-profile name on the list of recent successful linemen from the area. The 2007 Marian Central graduate went on to play at Iowa and win Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie after the 2010 season. More recently, Cary-Grove’s Trevor Ruhland graduated in 2015 and plays at Notre Dame. But the trend persisted even before them.

• O-LINEMEN
Crystal Lake South’s Trevor Keegan
Continued from page 5 Wormsley’s father, Jim Wormsley, remembers a number of competitive offensive linemen when he played at Dundee-Crown in the mid-1980s. Jim Wormsley, a lineman himself, graduated in 1987 and went on the play college football at Purdue. “Crystal Lake always had a few good kids, Cary had a number of kids,” Jim Wormsley said. “It’s always been a strong conference, and I think it’s continuing to be so.” The one thing college coaches are looking at more than anything these days is whether a lineman can pass block. In Spoden’s experience, the linemen often are ignored at recruiting camps until pass-blocking drills are underway. Jim Wormsley said the players now are much better athletes than they were when he played. The heavy focus on the pass game has made that necessary for linemen. “It’s more challenging, requires a little more work,” Jim Wormsley said. “You just can’t be a big kid. You have to be a big kid that can move and have good technique.” Spoden agreed, saying it’s not easy to tell a kid to be aggressive while moving

backward. And with all the focus on the Division I prospects, Spoden thinks the players with D-II offers shouldn’t be overlooked either. Johnsburg’s Moore has an offer from D-II Winona (Minnesota) State. Unlike some of his peers, he said he doesn’t
pay attention to what any other area linemen are up to. “People that are all worked up about what’s going on on Twitter,” Moore said,“it’s so ridiculous because you can have this offer and be this big or go to this camp, but at the end of the day all that matters is who is going to put who
on their back.” Moore plays both sides of the ball for Johnsburg, but said colleges are looking at him more for defense. Richmond-Burton’s Wagner, who committed to Arkansas in July, said he enjoys following other linemen on Twitter and seeing their successes. He met Prairie Ridge’s Jenkins at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl combine, and the two talked and gave each other tips. “I like to talk to these other guys,” Wagner said. “When they’re on the field, they’re your enemies, but off the field everyone is polite and sociable. In the end, we all have that common goal. It’s cool to be able to meet these guys and have different perspectives.” Jimmy Wormsley agreed, saying he likes to see when other linemen in the area receive college offers. He called it “a great way to motivate yourself.” His coach at Jacobs, Bill Mitz, is excited to see all of the area’s top talent line up once the season begins. “There’s been a lot written about some other linemen in our league,” Mitz said. “I know [Wormsley] is excited, and I am excited for him to line up against some people. All this talk beforehand is great, but I tell our guys to keep their mouths shut and talk with their shoulder pads.” After all the hours in the weight room, it’s time to do just that.

David Daigle, Cary-Grove, sr., S Daigle (5-foot-10, 167 pounds) was a Northwest Herald All-Area first-team selection after helping the Trojans to an 11-2 record and the Class 7A playoffs semifinals. He gives C-G good speed in its defensive backfield and picked off three passes and forced two fumbles. Wyatt Blake, Crystal Lake Central, jr., OT Blake (6-31/2, 308) will be starting on varsity for his third season and is one of the area’s best junior NCAA Division I prospects. The Tigers will look to Blake to lead their line as they move from a run-oriented offense to a spread look. He also might be utilized on defense. Blake has five D-I offers, most recently Missouri. Jared Hornbeck, Hampshire, sr., WR Hornbeck (6-0, 170) should be part of a dangerous combo with QB Jake Vincent for the pass-happy Whip-Purs, who had three receivers with more than 50 receptions. Hornbeck hauled in 51 balls for 1,034 yards and 13 touchdowns. Jeff Jenkins, Prairie Ridge, jr., OT-DE Jenkins (6-4, 240) was a star on offense and defense for the Wolves and will assume that role again. He is a two-year starter on offense and the leader on an offensive line paves the way for a high-powered option offense. Numerous D-I schools are interested in Jenkins, and he has an offer from Ball State. Chris Katrenick, Jacobs, sr., QB Katrenick (6-2, 205) committed to Bowling Green and returns for a third season as the Golden Eagles’ starter. He completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 1,807 yards and 17 touchdowns, with 13 interceptions. The Eagles were 7-3 and lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. Eric Mooney, Huntley, jr., QB Mooney (6-1, 190) was an All-Area first-teamer after showing his big-play abilities with 21 touchdowns in 132 touches from scrimmage. He rushed for 980 yards and caught passes for 656. Now he takes over at his natural position and will be a running/ passing threat that could cause real problems for defenses. Trevor Keegan, CL South, so., OL Keegan (6-6, 290) was the first freshman to play varsity for the Gators that coach Chuck Ahsmann could remember. He played guard last year and will move to tackle this year. Keegan received an offer from Northwestern this spring and likely will have more on the way. Jake Vincent, Hampshire, sr., QB Vincent (6-2, 170) completed 57.2 percent of his passes for 2,665 yards and 31 touchdowns for the Whip-Purs, who were a Class 6A playoff team last season. He has interest from schools on all levels, with Illinois State,

Cary-Grove The Trojans last season had their FVC Valley title hopes dashed by Huntley, but FB-LB Tyler Pennington is back to lead C-G, along with several other key players on defense and offense. C-G reached the Class 7A playoffs semifinals and looks like a team capable of another deep postseason run. Huntley The Red Raiders finished 10-1 last season and were disappointed at their second-round Class 8A playoff loss to Oswego, 17-14. Former defensive coordinator Matt Zimolzak takes over as head coach, and Huntley has enough key performers to contend. The Raiders won their only FVC Valley championship last season. Some strong teams might miss playoffs Northwest Herald sports reporter Joe Stevenson knows the area’s football scene and has for years. On weekdays, sports editor Jon Styf pretends he does, too. They discuss the upcoming football season here:
Styf: It’s coming, Joe. And there’s going to be no easing into the season. In Week 1, Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge meet up, while Huntley plays Jacobs, and then Huntley will face Prairie Ridge in Week 2. By then, we will know a lot more about what this year will have to offer. Football is good here now, very good, led by those four teams. But there’s a ton of players and teams out there I’m looking forward to seeing, starting with the McHenry and Crystal Lake South game in Week 1, our first look at new Warriors coach Nat Zunkel’s team and our first look at South freshman right tackle Dominic Collado. I know, they’ve got plenty of other, much more established players such as QB Luke Nolan, too. But I get excited to see players with huge potential who are merely rumors until kickoff Friday. So, who wins the big Week 1 tilts? Stevenson: Prairie Ridge at C-G was a great opener last season, and it was Samson Evans’ first start at quarterback. C-G won, 21-14, but we saw what

the Wolves did offensively the rest of that season. I’m picking Prairie Ridge in this one, because Evans and that offense are going to be so good. That said, C-G’s defense is always good and has several of its top players back. This game also features the area’s two best players, Evans and C-G fullback-linebacker Tyler Pennington. Huntley quarterback Eric Mooney is going to be all kinds of fun to watch, and I’m picking the Red Raiders in that game. I will take South in the other big FVC matchup, although it’s going to be fun to see what McHenry does with Zunkel, who is 67-23 in eight seasons as a head coach. Styf: Whoa, you bit and actually picked the games. Nice. Now, with how the math works, we figure that
five FVC teams can make the playoffs this year, right? So if Huntley, C-G and Prairie Ridge are in and Jacobs is likely in, who gets the other spot? Crystal Lake South, Hampshire or Crystal Lake Central? Stevenson: I’m not sure on that one. I see those games after that are going to be really fun. Even Dundee-Crown, the one FVC team we haven’t mentioned, has a lot of key players back. I really think the FVC has been one of the strongest football conferences in the state for a few years, and it might be as loaded, and balanced, as ever. There could be a couple of pretty good, and worthy, teams left out at 4-5. Styf: I’m torn between Central and Hampshire for that final spot but will take the Tigers. And now we’ll head
to the Kishwaukee River Conference, which debuts this year. To me, Johnsburg and Richmond-Burton are the best two, while Woodstock North and Marengo are the most likely to make the playoffs along with them. Agreed? Stevenson: Yes. I really like Johnsburg, which has six three-year starters and probably the best player in the league in running back Alex Peete. (No slight intended to R-B big man Dalton Wagner). Plus, the Skyhawks have a returning quarterback in Riley Buchanon and have won playoff openers the past two seasons. Maybe the Skyhawks can avoid Chicago Phillips in the playoffs. Styf: Finally, I’ll ask you about Marian Central and Alden-Hebron. The Hurricanes play in a tough conference, obviously, and we don’t really know where they fit. The Giants have 19 players and have a ton of turnover. Can either make the playoffs or more? Stevenson: I think it’s going to be pretty tough for both of them because of players who graduated. The East Suburban Catholic Conference is probably one of the top three in the state, which makes it tougher on Marian. A-H lost some really nice players last season, although coach John Lalor usually puts a competitive team out there.

Oladipo has the size and speed to attract a lot of attention, whether it’s from blockers or from college coaches. He received more than 20 scholarship offers from NCAA Division I schools and narrowed his choices to six this summer, expecting to announce his commitment Thursday. … Mooney, a junior, will be next as colleges see how he runs the Raiders’ offense.
Scouting report • Zimolzak formerly was the Red Raiders defensive coordinator and last year’s unit was one of his best, allowing 14 points a game and giving up 20 points in a game only twice. Zimolzak takes over for John Hart, who left to take the head coaching position at Brownsburg High School near Indianapolis. • QB Eric Mooney (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) will be one of the area’s most dangerous offensive threats, both as a runner and passer. He was the Raiders’ best big-play threat last season as a running back and receiver. RB Mike Ahmer (5-8, 165) also is fast and will line up as the lone running back most of the time. • WR Alec Coss (6-0, 165) caught 38 passes for eight touchdowns and gives the Raiders speed on the outside. Evans is receiving the most interest, although Ferbet committed to Army (which does not give athletic scholarships but will hold a roster spot). Scouting report • The Wolves were an offensive machine with their triple option last season, averaging 49 points a game, and they should be difficult to stop again. QB Samson Evans (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) was the first sophomore to win the Northwest Herald Player of the Year and returns to run the option. • Also returning for the offense are OT Jeff Jenkins (6-3, 245) and TE Austen Ferbet (6-3, 230), along with RBs Zach Gulbransen (5-9, 165) and Cole Brown (5-9, 175). FB Manny Ebirim (5-9, 225) played some while Nathan Griffin was hurt and will be tough to stop inside the tackles. (Players mentioned in thid section’s Five to Watch are not included here.) Joe Moore, Johnsburg, sr., OL/DE Moore (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) will be the centerpiece for the Skyhawks on both the offensive and defensive lines. He can squat 500 pounds and has been called the team’s vocal leader by his teammates. He also will have opportunities as the long snapper. Jarren Jackson, Marengo, sr., RB/FS Only two returning players in the area ran for more yards than Jackson (5-10, 180) last season. Johnsburg’s Alex Peete (2,054 rushing yards) and Prairie Ridge’s Samson Evans (1,966) top the list. Jackson ran for 1,451. If he takes as many handoffs as he did last year (250), he is capable of matching or bettering his performance. Jesse Hill-Male, Richmond-Burton, sr., RB Hill-Male (6-0, 185) worked his way into the starting running back position last season before he tore an ACL in October. The Rockets’ top two running backs from last season – Joe Dittmar and Joe Wolfram – have graduated, leaving plenty of opportunity for Hill-Male. “He can do a little bit of everything,” R-B coach Pat Elder said. “He understands what we’re trying to do for him in our offense.” Hunter Freres, Harvard, sr., FB/SS Freres (6-0, 175) returns as the Hornets’ best weapon on offense. He rushed for 344 yards on 83 carries and scored five touchdowns last year. He also caught 24 passes for 299 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, he has a nose for the ball and tackles well in open space. Nico LoDolce, Johnsburg, jr., WR LoDolce (5-9, 155) can be hard to catch once he has the ball in his hands. With Skyhawks quarterback Riley Buchanan also returning, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the duo connect many times this season. LoDolce caught 44 passes in 2015, totaling 534 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Jacob Sumner, Woodstock, sr., RB/DB Nobody produced more offense for Woodstock than Sumner (5-11, 170). The running back led the Blue Streaks with 388 rushing yards, 279 receiving yards and seven combined touchdowns. “His potential is pretty high,” coach Tommy Thompson said. “It’s up to him what he wants out of it.” Eric Mackey, Marengo, sr., QB Mackey (6-2, 190) takes over the reins of what was one of the most productive passing attacks in the area last year. The Indians’ top quarterback will have to find new targets. If he can do that, Marengo’s offensive system will allow him to put up some gaudy numbers. Casey Dycus, Woodstock North, sr., RB/OLB Coach Jeff Schroeder thinks Thunder fans might be scratching their heads when they see Dycus (5-11, 185) run this season, ask-

Coach: Dan DeBoeuf (second season, 8-3 overall) 2015 record: 8-3 overall, 5-2 Big Northern Conference East Division Fast fact: RB Alex Peete has rushed for 3,542 career yards. If he surpasses 5,000 by the end of this season, that would place him in the top 15 of the IHSA’s all-time list.
Top recruits Joe Moore, sr., OL/DL Moore received an offer to play at Division II Winona (Minnesota) State. Peete and Moore have been playing football together since first grade.
Scouting report • Johnsburg posted its second consecutive winning season last year in what was coach Dan DeBoeuf’s first season in charge. That’s after a stretch from 2011 to 2014 when the Skyhawks went 1-26. • The area’s leading rusher last year, Alex Peete, returns for his senior season. He rushed for 1,488 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore and followed it with 2,054 yards and 29 touchdowns last year, giving him some lofty numbers to aim for in his senior season. “He gives us all the credit in the interviews, he doesn’t give himself enough credit,” lineman Joe Moore said of Peete. “This is a guy who hasn’t always been the biggest. QB Riley Buchanan returns for his senior season after throwing for 1,505 yards a year ago. Two of his top targets return as well – junior WR
Nico LoDolce and senior WR Bryce Jordan. LoDolce caught 44 passes for 534 yards and four touchdowns. Jordan caught 31 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Peete was also a receiving option from the backfield, catching 20 passes last season. • Moore will be a presence on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Sky-

Scouting report • The Rockets have a lot to replace up front. Elder said the offensive and defensive lines will be built around Dalton Wagner. The 6-foot-9, 312-pound senior committed to play at Arkansas this summer. Wagner will play offensive tackle at the college level but is expected to be the centerpiece on both sides of the line for the Rockets this year. “We have a lot to replace up front,” Elder said. “We do have some good experience coming back at the skill positions offensively and defensively. Our progress up front will be the key to our season.” • Of those skill position players, QB Brady Gibson completed 17 of 39 passes last season for 388 yards and five touchdowns. Joe Wolfram, who combined for 1,820 yards a year ago. RB Jake Kaufman, who rushed for 300 yards on 35 carries last year, is not playing football this season. • Wagner isn’t the only 6-9 player lining up for the Rockets this season. • In almost 100 years of Marengo football, the 2015 season was only the third time the Indians reached 10 wins. The season included Marengo’s first appearance in an IHSA state semifinal since 1997 and a loss to eventual Class 4A state champion Chicago Phillips. Lynch doesn’t know whether last year’s success motivated his players, but he said last year is not on anyone’s mind anymore. “It’s one of those things where it doesn’t matter what [last year’s team] did,” Lynch said. “It’s a whole new year. Each and every man has got to get better.” • Much of last season’s offensive production has graduated. Quarterback Zach Knobloch has moved on after leading the area with 2,994 passing yards and 33 touchdowns. His top two

Coach: Jeff Schroeder (eighth season, 25-41) 2015 record: 4-5 overall, 2-4 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division Fast fact: Last year was the second season in a row the Thunder lost their final two games of the season to finish with a 4-5 record and miss the playoffs.
Top recruits Schroeder said no Woodstock North players are being actively recruited. Dycus attended a number of camps over the summer and hopes to garner some interest this season. Schroeder said he wouldn’t be surprised if Dycus heard from Division II and NAIA schools by the end of the year. “It will be interesting to see what kind of attention he draws after this season, because I think he’s shown the ability to be as good as anybody,” Schroeder said. “I knew he’d be good, but he’s exceeding expectations.”
Scouting report • It’s good to have options. Collin Mergl opened the 2015 season as the Woodstock North starting quarterback before he went down with an injury. QB Matt Zinnen took over in Mergl’s absence. Schroeder said Mergl and Zinnen are two of the team’s best athletes, so he wants them on the field together. Mergl made the move to running back, and Zinnen will remain the starting quarterback. • North will continue running its triple-option offense. It will do so without its top two leading rushers from last season – Randall Kline and Travis Busch. They have graduated, leaving an opportunity for newcomers to step up. Joining Mergl in the backfield is RB Casey Dycus (5-foot-10, 185 pounds). Mergl is a bigger option at 6-4, 190. • North returns four key offensive linemen.

Scouting report • The Woodstock coaching staff under Thompson has been in place for more than a year now, and the players know what to expect from their coaches. A move to the Kishwaukee River Conference, with schools closer to Woodstock’s enrollment, could prove beneficial in the long run. “Everybody involved is excited,” Thompson said. “There’s excitement in playing some new teams that we haven’t seen in a long time. I think it’s a great thing.” • Jacob Sumner returns after rushing for 388 yards and four touchdowns on 75 attempts in 2015. He also caught 19 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Junior RBs Sean Doyle

and Jonathan Simpson also could see playing time out of the backfield. Thompson said the
Streaks will use Sumner all over the field. “He’s a playmaker,” Thompson said. “He has good football sense, good instincts.” • Senior QB Nathan Hogue will start under center. Hogue took over starting duties for graduated QB Zach Cullum at the end of last year. Thompson called Hogue “very mobile.” Thompson also has seen the leadership intangibles coaches want in a quarterback. • Senior TE Blake Brainard will be a top target for Hogue. Brainard is 6-foot-4, 195 pounds and can cause matchup problems. WRs Ryan Jandernoa and Ernesto Arellano should be in the mix. • Defensively, last year’s leading tackler, Jake Rowan, returns. The linebacker “has an instinct for the ball and reads defenses well,” Thompson said. Brainard will line up at defensive end. Sumner, Hogue and Jandernoa could be in the rotation at defensive back. The Streaks want to be more versatile on defense. When facing triple-option offenses such as Woodstock North’s, they might switch things up entirely from how they look against other teams. “We want to try to stop teams using whatever defense is going to be effective,” Thompson said. “We have a lot of hybrid players, guys who
are aggressive, and we’re going to use them.”
Top recruits Sumner (5-11, 170) attended a number of summer camps and has received interest from NAIA schools in the area. “He’s developed a rapport with a few schools around the area,” Thompson said. “He can definitely play at the next level. 28 Quick hits Coach: Brian Melvin (first season) 2015 record: 1-8 overall, 1-6 Big Northern Conference East Division Fast fact: Melvin is the third Burlington Central coach in the past three seasons.
Scouting report • With coaches moving in and out over the past three years, the Rockets have not had a consistent leader. Melvin hopes to provide just that. He was afraid it would be hard for his players to buy into their third new staff, but that hasn’t been the case. Chuck Abate will serve as offensive coordinator and Robbie Stover returns to his alma mater as the defensive coordinator.
• Burlington Central is the largest school in the new Kishwaukee River Conference. • Senior RB Jimmy Fay (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) will start in the backfield. RB Erik Hansen is a bigger option at 6-2, 215. Senior RB Dionte Smith also could take his share of handoffs. The Rockets have an experienced offensive line led by seniors Joey Garbacz, Jacob Janavich and Ryan Hupe. • Senior QB Cameron Kaldenberger will start this season. His top targets likely will be 6-2, 190-pound Colin Anderson and 6-0, 160-pound Logan Dietz. “Cameron is going to be fine. He’s got all the tools you would want for a high school quarterback,” Melvin said. “We are expecting him to do different things and he does them well. It’s nice to have a kid that can throw the football ,and he’s got a great arm.” • The defensive line will be a strength of the
team, led by linemen Bret Lopez (5-10, 270) and Vince O’Neal (5-10, 220). Junior LBs Nate Figursky and Sam Esterly don’t have much varsity experience but will be thrown into the fire. In addition to running back, Fay is such a versatile athlete he could end up playing a number of positions on defense. He will even serve as the kicker. Melvin said Fay has made 55-yard field goals in practice. “Jimmy is just that athlete that you hope you get to coach,” Melvin said. “I had that honor a handful of times, and it’s great that my first head coaching job I get another one. He’s going to do everything for us.”

There’s also that ‘Jeez, we’re losing Nate, he was a three-year starter, Josh was a three-year starter.’ I think there’s always that, but they’re high school kids, they want their opportunity, too.” • Numbers are always a question for the Giants, and Lalor said that, as of the first week of school, they were at 19 players. “I wish we were up above 20 anyway, but we’re not. To me, he’s looking like an all-conference, player of the year type and all-state right now.” • Austin Stauss, an all-conference honorable mention defensive back last year, is back to 100 percent after dealing with a shoulder injury in 2015. Stauss will begin the season as starting quarterback, but Lalor said, as the season goes on, he could see Brad Judson working his way into that spot. “I would actually prefer to get Austin back out at slot receiver,” Lalor said. “Brad throws a real nice ball. He just needs a little more reps, a little bit more experience at it.” • The Giants’ backfield to start the season likely will be Mason Mindham at tailback (“He’s been running pretty hard and he’s gotten a lot faster,” Lalor said) and Justin Strang at fullback (“He’s just a sophomore but he’s pretty stocky, strong kid,” Lalor said.). • “We’ve got a lot of unknowns this year in the NAC conference, two new teams and a lot new coaches,” Lalor said. “It’s kind of a wild card to begin with.” Marquette and Chicago Hope the “cream of the crop” in the conference, Lalor said, but he wants the Giants to be in the running for third place behind them. Lalor said the Giants’ goal is to be 3-0 heading into Weeks 4 and 5 when they face those two back-to-back. He also said they want to aim for seven wins so they could possibly host a playoff game rather
than going on the road against a top seed. • “The other big focus is just coming together as a team,” Lalor said. “We’ve got a lot of guys in new spots, so just growing as a team, maturing as a team, and coming together at the right time, I think that’s our main focus. We’re kind of more worried about us right now than we are everybody else to be honest with you.”
Top recruit Glenn recently picked up an offer from Valparaiso, Lalor said. Glenn also is interested in Wisconsin-Platteville and Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Lalor said Northern Illinois had shown a bit of interest, as well. “He kind of wants to do engineering, so he’s very interested in Platteville, and now this offer from Valpo, those are probably his top two right now. Yeah, it’s kind of neat, for a kid from us to get a D-I offer is a big deal.”

where we fit in conference play, and that will then be the catapult for our postseason.”
Top recruits The relatively young Hurricanes don’t have a standout recruit heading into the year. “As far as the seniors, we’re going to have a lot of Division II, Division III guys in there,” Maloney said. “Jake Bahl, I could see him coming on as the season goes, but I don’t know where he is on the recruiting radar for schools.” Maloney said he sees guys in the sophomore and junior classes who could turn into high-end recruits, especially on the offensive line. Junior tight end Sam Limbaugh was one name Maloney singled out, saying he could draw interest if he increases his production in the passing game to go along with his good blocking.
Scouting report • The Hurricanes are junior heavy after graduating a number of key pieces, including area top-10 players at quarterback, tailback and receiver. “We’ve got some guys that have been waiting their turn, and now I’m just excited to see how they grasp their opportunity and how they seize the day, if you will, when it’s now their turn,” Maloney said. • Gavin Scott won the starting quarterback job in a competition with AJ Golembiewski (who will transition to a starting spot at receiver as well as being the backup QB). “Right now, Gavin adds a little more to our offense as far as his dynamics,” Maloney said. Scott came up midway through the season last year as a running back and “he has legs that can go,” Maloney said. “He’s got the balance. He’s a true triple threat.” • When asked about replacing tailback Emitt Peisert (1,833 rushing yards and 15 TDs last year), Maloney said, “Don’t sleep on Brian Niemaszek. I think Brian, when it’s all said and done, is going to make a nice name for himself, a nice little page in the tradition of Marian Central Catholic. When it’s all said and done, people are going to be a little bit wowed by Brian’s performance. That’s on all

of us as an offense.” • The defense, boasting more experience this year, is a high-energy, physical and emotional group, playing with more “swagger,” Maloney said. The Hurricanes, led by linebacker Wyatt Awe, defensive back Jared Churak and lineman Jake Bahl, are aiming to be more aggressive and force more turnovers. They will, however, be without safety Elias Edmondson, who was considered a leader for the unit but ended up enrolling at Sterling midway through preseason camp. • Maloney said that with this group he’s focusing on competing hard and keying in on the game’s most crucial moments. “This year I’m really focused on making sure we compete well in those very important
circumstances,” Maloney said. “Not that every down isn’t important in football, but I’m really interested in the third-and-3 on offense; I’m really interested in the fourthand-1 on defense; I’m really interested in the short-yardage goal-line side of things; I’m really interested to see how we do on those long downs, third-and-15, can we get off the field, things like that.” • On what they learned about the ESCC last year, Maloney said, “I think they learned how tough our conference is on a week-toweek basis. Preparing for that takes a daily concerted effort to improve. Our schedule is very much like a poker table, if you can’t find the sucker on the schedule or the sucker at the table, you’re it. So I’m interested to see
