Prophetstown anti-abortionist sentenced for trying to burn down clinic URBANA – A 73-year-old Prophetstown man who tried to burn down a future reproductive health clinic in Danville where abortions will be performed was sentenced Monday in federal court to five years in prison for attempted arson and ordered to pay $327,547 in restitution. U.S. Central District Court Judge Colin Stirling Bruce could have sentenced Philip Buyno, who turns 74 on March 1, to up to 20 years and fined him up to $250,000. Buyno will be under three years’ supervised release once his sentence is served. There is no parole in the federal system. Assistant U.S Attorney Eugene Miller and Buyno’s defense attorney Sharbel Rantisi recommended that Buyno be sentenced to five years in prison, the minimum amount of years he faced. Miller acknowledged that Buyno is being sentenced because he did not follow the rule of law and he is not being sentenced to prison for his beliefs, noting that you cannot burn down someone’s property because you disagree with how they are using it. Rantisi said Buyno’s wife of 43 years, Sallie Buyno, died a few months
before he decided to attack the clinic. Rantisi described Buyno as an otherwise stand-up citizen with six children, two of them adopted, and a lifelong career as an Philip J. Buyno educator. In a rambling statement to the judge, Buyno said he would be pro-choice, too, if it wasn’t for God’s word and he waved his hands while characterizing himself as someone trying to issue a warning to others. Buyno said he and his wife became abortion opponents in 1973 and he knew he had to move to Danville after he learned of plans for the clinic that he described as an “abortion factory.” ”These little lives are real. We deny it, and we do,” Buyno said. “But I can’t.” ”I did cross a line at the end,” he later said. “I hope to see you all in heaven.” Bruce said he seriously considered giving Buyno a higher sentence than five years, but found the state and defense attorney’s agreement appropriate given Buyno’s age. The judge also said he found Buyno’s offense troubling because Buyno
decided his beliefs were superior to all others’ beliefs and it wouldn’t matter if others got hurt. Bruce sided with the prosecution’s decision to withhold administering a fine so that any of Buyno’s resources would go toward paying the $327,547 in restitution to LaDonna Prince, the property’s owner. Buyno was indicted June 6, 2023, for the May 20 incident. His request to plead no contest, in which he would have accepted a conviction without admitting his guilt, was denied Aug. 30. He pleaded guilty to attempted arson Sept. 19. About 4:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, Buyno backed his 2012 Passat into the entrance of the building at 600 N. Logan Ave. in Danville, which was being remodeled into a clinic. Buyno’s car was filled with containers of gasoline, wood and old tires he planned to use as fuel to set the building ablaze. His effort was caught on video surveillance. It failed when his car doors became jammed shut by the fallen debris and he couldn’t get out of the vehicle or reach a container of gas he had thrown out the window. He was extricated and arrested and has been in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service since the incident. A friend of Buyno’s, Michelle Wilkinson, submitted a character let-
ter to Bruce that read in part: “I write this letter to you in hope of sharing some of the hope and love that Phillip Buyno has shown to myself and my family over the last 30 years. Phil has been a father figure and grandfather figure in the most meaningful sense to my (now grown) children when, without his presence, would have had little to none. “He has opened his heart and home to us back when I was a young, single mother working two jobs. If not for he, I cannot express how much more difficult, if not impossible, it would have been for me to maintain a job. “I have watched him teach my children so many strong values and provide them with a sense of comfort, love and security that they would have otherwise never known from any other male figure in their life. ... I cannot even begin to convey the amount of love, compassion, support and sacrifice that Phil has made for our family.” Despite the fact the attack has pushed back the opening of the clinic, Prince said after the hearing that she has her fingers crossed to open in 2024. ”It has definitely been a delay, but not a deterrent.” Prince said. “We’re definitely going to open.”

Prophetstown man sentenced to 12 years for sexually assaulting child By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com
MORRISON – A 38-year-old Prophetstown man was sentenced in Whiteside County Court to 12 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. Zachery M. Rangel, who was to be tried Feb. 13, instead entered an Alford plea Jan. 31 to predatory
criminal sexual assault of a child. Rangel must serve 85%, or a little more than 10 years. He was given credit for two years, 118 days served. Upon h i s Zachery M. Rangel release, he will be
subject to mandatory supervised release for three years to life and must register as a sex offender. An Alford is a type of plea in which a defendant does not admit guilt, but instead decides it would be better to make a plea agreement or otherwise take a known sentence than to take his chance at trial. Predatory sexual assault carries a potential sentence of six to 60 years
in prison. As part of his plea agreement, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, each punishable by three to seven years, were dismissed. The assault happened sometime between May 1 and Aug. 15, 2019. Other than this incident, Rangel’s criminal history was minor, court records show.
Savanna fentanyl dealer charged with drug-induced homicide By KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com
SAVANNA – A 23-year-old Savanna fentanyl dealer already serving time in Iowa and convicted of dealing in Illinois is charged in Carroll County court with drug-induced homicide in the 2022 death of a 28-year-old Thomson woman, the Illinois State Police announced in a news release Friday. Saidrick Thomas was charged
Wednesday and faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted. He also is charged with dealing a controlled substance, which carries a Saidrick Thomas, 23, prison sentence of three to seven of Savanna years. Thomas is accused of providing Amy LaShelle
the drugs that caused her overdose death March 2, 2022. He was sentenced May 24 in Carroll County to eight years in prison for dealing fentanyl, a sentence that will run concurrently with a sentence handed down Oct. 27, 2022, in the Iowa Department of Corrections for conspiring with intent to deliver the drug. He is serving time in the Anamosa State Penitentiary in Iowa. One count of possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of
cannabis was dismissed per a plea agreement. Thomas was convicted in Iowa of four counts of possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl for selling the drug to confidential informants of the Blackhawk Area Task Force four times that spring. He also was charged with four counts of violating Iowa’s drug tax stamp law, a felony, but those charges were dismissed per a plea agreement.

State Rep. Tony McCombie releases ‘Capitol Crimes’ podcast SAVANNA – State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, is spearheading a new podcast series called “Capitol Crimes” to chronicle the stories behind legislation introduced in the Illinois House of Representatives. Listeners will hear from the sponsors of the legislation. “Capitol Crimes” host Dean Abbott will unpack the “why” of the legislation while telling the stories of the legislative measures and what happened to those measures after they were filed in the House of Representatives. The first episode of “Capitol Crimes” was released last week and
features McCombie discussing “The Pam Knight Story.” Knight, a child protection specialist for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, was mur- State Rep. violence on the job, yet those bills have failed to pass and become law. This year, McCombie has continued the fight to enact legislation that would give DCFS workers the kinds of on-the-job protections provided by law for police officers and other public servants in volatile situations. “I am pleased to get this podcast out into the world to make sure people hear the story of Pam Knight, which will help garner support for essential legislation we must pass to make sure tragedies like this never happen again,” McCombie said. McCombie’s legislation includes
HB1460 and HB1461, which will heighten the penalties against anyone who commits aggravated battery toward a person working as a DCFS employee or working under the Adult Protective Services Program with the Department on Aging. “Supporting our DCFS workers does not just mean attending their funerals,” McCombie said. “It means doing everything within our power to make sure those funerals never happen in the first place.” Tune in to listen to the Pam Knight Story at https://soundcloud.com/capitol-crimes.

ROCK FALLS – Less than three weeks after suffering a devastating loss, the Moore Tires family is in overdrive, hustling to open the new site in Rock Falls that eventually will have a 21-bay repair shop, a company headquarters and a warehouse. They don’t have an opening date yet, but they’re taking advantage of the unseasonable weather and “we’re moving as fast as we possibly can,” said Chief Administrative Officer Kayla Heiar, who along with her brother, Regional Manager Kyle Moore, is overseeing the rebuild at 2400 First Ave./state Route 40. Their parents, Jeff and Angie Moore, opened their first shop at 2411 E. Rock Falls Road/U.S. Route 30 in 1991. It was totaled Jan. 16 in a conflagration that began about 4:25 a.m. in the first-floor shop area. Firefighters from more than 20 agencies responded, but there was no saving the 70,000-square-foot facility. No one was injured and no foul play is suspected, fire officials said. The city approached the family while the coals still were hot and the Moores soon entered into an agreement with the Rock Falls Industrial Development Commission to buy the site, which is on the west side of Route 40 just north of the Hennepin Canal and a stone’s throw away from Interstate 88. Tuesday, just 21 days after the fire, was a banner day – banners with the Moore Tires name were hung on the new shop building. And the company’s signature big red letters are coming back someday, Heiar said. The transformation so far has been amazing. When they first saw the building less than a month ago, it was full of road salt being stored there by the city. “We had to haul out 21 truckloads,”

There are three buildings on-site – a former large truck repair shop run by the late George Hallman, the former

S.J. Smith welding shop and a building that the city of Rock Falls is using as a recycling center. As of Feb. 6, plumbers, electricians and others were busy working on the interior of the new shop, which one day also will have an addition that will stretch it to 21 bays, including space for commercial and agricultural repair jobs, Moore said. That’s the building they are concentrating on for now. The city will continue to use the recycling center for another year or so before it becomes warehouse space and the former welding shop eventually will be remodeled into the headquarters for Moore Tires’ six locations – in Rock Falls, at 1315 N. Galena Ave. in Dixon, and in Mendota, Kewanee, Monmouth and Macomb. For now, they are using temporary office space in Rock Falls for their headquarters’ 10 to 12 administrative workers while the rest of the company’s 50 workers based in Rock Falls are keeping busy at the Dixon, Kewanee and Mendota locations and some even are helping out at the construction site, Heiar said. They would be nowhere near this far along without the support of their employees, Heiar said. “They’ve been absolutely amazing.” There is no word yet on the cause of the fire and it will be two to three months before cleanup can begin, the siblings said. They’re not yet sure what they’re going to do with it, Moore said. “It’s going to be a long process.” And a lot of hard work. They’re not grousing, though. “We wouldn’t wish this upon anyone,” but the response not only from their employees, but also the community, has been terrific, Heiar said. “We feel very blessed.”

8 GLIMPSES OF THE PAST – FULTON
1994: Elementary teacher featured on WQAD’s ‘My Favorite Teacher’ 60 Years
Feb. 12, 1964
Four additional teachers will be employed by the Fulton Junior High and Grade School District for the next school year. Superintendent Virgil Staples was authorized to accept applications for the four positions, which will include two first grade teachers, one fourth grade teacher and one sixth grade teacher. The additional teachers will be employed as a result of the favorable vote on the district’s request for an increase in its legal tax rate limit. It was decided at a meeting of the finance committee that a financial campaign for the Harbor Crest Home will be staged in Fulton and vicinity beginning April 15. Maurice Wiersema, chairman of the finance committee, explained the campaign will be aimed at $250,000 with a minimum objective of $125,000 to be raised in cash or pledges to be paid off within a period of three years.

The “flu bug” seems to have hit Fulton schools in full force during the past two weeks. The high school reported about 100 students out. Ben
Ray, principal of the grade school, said more than 85 of the school’s 415 students were absent. The junior high recorded 103 students absent. So far, the teachers have not been affected. Little Charity Lynn Houzenga, the 3-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Houzenga, gathered with her parents and other members of the family that stretches five generations. The oldest is great-great grandmother Mrs. Anna Houzenga, who turned 89 years old on Feb. 9. Bert Houzenga is the great-grandfather and Clifford Houzenga is the grandfather. Mrs. Houzenga has 67 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Harold Vance and Floyd Holesinger began three-year terms as Harbor Crest Board members at the beginning of the year. They were elected to replace retiring members Bert Van Houten and Harold Huizenga. Officers elected to serve for 1984 are Lyle Barnhart, president; Don VanderVinne, vice president; and Gerald Boelkens, secretary-treasurer. Fundraising for the Iowa City Ron-
ald McDonald House received a boost from Larry and Sally Parker of Fulton. The Parkers gave $485 toward the House as a memorial to their daughter who was born with a serious birth defect in January 1983. Their daughter required several months of specialized care at the Iowa Children’s Health Center of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. The Parkers said they would have stayed at the house many times if it had been available during the past year.

Mrs. Gaile Brinkman, a kindergarten teacher at Fulton Elementary School, was pleasantly surprised when the TV camera crew from WQAD-TV, Davenport, arrived in her classroom to shoot a segment for the “My Favorite Teacher” feature shown on Channel 8. Unknown to Mrs. Brinkman, Karolyn Johnson, a former student who now is in seventh grade, had written a letter to the station listing the reasons why Mrs. Brinkman was her favorite teacher. The crew presented Brinkman with a plaque and gave Karolyn a savings bond.
Study highlights show recreational activity on the Upper Mississippi River during the year supported $1.2 billion in industrial output and 18,500 jobs nationwide. The study estimated more than 12 million daily visits by recreationists took place during the study year. In the 76 counties bordering the Upper Mississippi River system from Cairo, Illinois, up to Minnesota, the recreational activity supported $400 million in output and 7,200 jobs. Service industries, retailers, manufacturers and finance and insurance providers were most affected.

The city of Fulton recently received permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to clean and clear the shoreline just north of the North Bridge. Fulton’s volunteer millers are helping the city crew to clear and cut trees and debris from the shoreline in order to remove some of the windbreak that was created by the trees to the windmill and also to clear the trees for better viewing of the windmill.

The healthier plant-based nutritional practice is discussed By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The chances that you know someone who uses plant-based nutrition likely are pretty high. The odds are they are healthier than you if you’re not engaged in such a nutritional practice. This is no longer a concept that is on the fringe. It is a growing movement based on science and outcomes, as well as the increasing availability of nutritious and tasty food in the plant-based domain.
When compared with the low carbohydrate diet, a person with plantbased nutrition had four times less problems from COVID-19 complications than those on a low carbohydrate diet. No one questions the initial weight loss that comes from the low carbohydrate diet. However, it is not sustainable for most people over time. On the other hand, plant-based nutrition people tend to end up in a healthier fashion at their set point for weight and stay there.

Next is to tackle the protein myth. We are bombarded with information about how much protein we need when in reality many of us already are in excess of protein intake whether sourced from meat or otherwise. This excess protein is as damaging to our system as excess calories and in particular excess carbohydrates. This is because our body must ultimately metabolize what we take in and eliminate as waste product what is not necessary. However, not always does this
waste product go directly through our urine or feces. Rather, it is often deposited long-term in our tissues, such as our joints, and otherwise. Keep in mind that a plant-based nutrition does not merely mean the avoidance of meat, dairy or other animal products. It means deriving a healthy source of nutrition, including proteins and healthy carbohydrates with some fat from nature.

Continued from page 8 Some people who practice plantbased nutrition will avoid grains because of the problems that grains can cause. Healthy sources of plant-based nutrition include many forms of beans, such as black beans and pinto beans. It is important that these be prepared in the proper fashion; the internet has many resources. Another source of plant-based nutrition includes nuts of many types.

amount of protein in plants. Indeed, almost all of the blue culture’s zones are longevity zones where people live long and healthy lives with less of our usual aging problems. To be clear, these longevity zones do not necessarily have a prohibition against meat, but they don’t base their nutrition around meat. These are not the cultures that say I have to have meat and potatoes. They readily eat potatoes and occasionally eat meat. There is a term for people in any culture that base the majority of their nutri-
tion on plant-based but also eat meat. They are called flexitarian. When they do eat meat, many people will prefer grass-fed meat. They can minimize contamination of pesticides and herbicides and increase their omega 3s in a more natural fashion. A longevity expert was asked to summarize the best nutrition plan in order to achieve an optimal long and healthy life. They used the words: plant-based whole foods. Avoiding processed foods and simple sugars remains a cornerstone for all healthy nutrition plans.

By DAN WUSSOW
dwussow@shawmedia.com Junior post Camryn Veltrop has been a force inside the paint and a defensive anchor for the 18-13 Morrison girls basketball team this season. In a Jan. 17 win over Oregon, Veltrop totaled 28 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The next day, in a close loss to Riverdale, she scored 22 points. Veltrop was voted the Sauk Valley Media Athlete of the Week by readers for Jan. 15-21. She answered a few questions to help us get to know her a little bit better.
What have been the keys to your team’s success this season? Veltrop: The key to our team’s success
this season is our experience and hard work in practice and in games.
What goals have you set for the rest of this season for yourself? For the team? Veltrop: My goal for the rest of this
season is to continue to do the best I can to help my team in any way possible. The goal for our team is to try to play well these last couple of games and go into the postseason with some momentum.
What do you feel is your biggest strength on and off the court? Veltrop: One of my biggest strengths is
my composure. I try my best to be calm
games is anything by Drake or Kanye.
What songs are your go-to to relax? Veltrop: I don’t really listen to music
when I am relaxing.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? Veltrop: If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would go to Australia to see the various types of animals there.

What’s your favorite memory of Morrison basketball? Veltrop: My favorite memory was
when we won the Pearl City tournament last season and the Warren tournament the year before.
What’s your favorite thing about basketball? Veltrop: My favorite thing about bas-
ketball is being on a team with such amazing girls. I’ve made so many friends and good relationships through
this sport.
What’s your favorite movie? TV show? Veltrop: My favorite movie is “The
Blindside” and my favorite show is “The Walking Dead.”

lete would be Aliyah Boston, who plays on the Indiana Fever.
You get to have dinner and talk basketball with three athletes, past or present. They can be professionals, college stars or former area standouts. Who are you picking and why? Veltrop: The three players I would
have dinner with would be Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Aliyah Boston. I would talk to MJ because it would be great to talk to the greatest basketball player of all time. I would talk to Kobe because a lot of people compare him to MJ, and he is also considered one of the best players of all time. If I could talk to Aliyah Boston, I would ask her what it was like to play at South Carolina and be coached by Dawn Staley.
