Abduli saidhehadtotemporarilyclosetherestaurant on Jan.11forhisscheduledsurgery,aswellasbeingshortstaffedduringhisrecovery Therestaurantofficially reopenedforbusinessonMonday,March20.

TheMainStreetrestaurant hasbeenadiningstaplein the communityforthepast22 years.Acoupleofyearsago, AbdulialsopurchasedtheformerEchonewspaperbuilding nextdoorandhopestoeventuallyopenabanquetroom,or a bakeryspaceforhiswifewho makes“amazingcakes,”he said.Thecoupleandtheirthree daughterslive inProphet-

stown,andhehopestocontinueinvestinginthecommunity.“IfeellikeIbelonghere,” hesaid,addingthatthey’re a

community-orientedbusiness. New hoursfortherestaurant are 7a.m.to2p.m.everyday butTuesdays,whenthey’re

Crosscountrydirtbikeracersfromacrosstheregion descendedonBillGusse’sProphetstownfarmonSpringhill RoadovertheweekendtocompeteintheMidwestXCountry RacingSeries–aneventopentopros,youthandallridersin between.

Gusse,whoalsoownsandoperatestheBikeBarninFenton,acquiredthepropertyyearsagotohostracesthroughout theyear.

With100acres offarm,fieldandwoods,thelandscapeis perfectfordirtbike racing.Thesoilissandyanddoesn’tget muddy,andthemeanderingtrailsaremadeforthesport.

Gussesaidthere’sbeenahistoryofracingontheproperty sinceatleastthe1940s.Backinthemeadow,therewerecampersandcampfiresasspectatorswatchedthebikershitthe ramps.Familiescheeredontheracersastheymadetheirway aroundthelaps.

Sunday’sraceswereonesofendurance,withthefinalrace clockinginatonehourand45minutes.Theyoungestclassof racers,withtheirownlittletrack,was4to6yearolds.There alsowereyouth,adultandproclassescompeting.

GussefoundedMXCRacingSeriesin1976andhasorganizedhundredsofracesinhislifetimebesideshisown25-year careerindirtbikeracing.Anotherraceseriesisscheduledat thefarmonSunday,April9,andspectatorsarewelcome.

TheIllinoisStatePoliceDivisionof InternalInvestigationinvestigatedthe shooting.Costelloreviewedtheresults oftheinvestigationtodetermineif criminalchargeswerewarranted.

Accordingtotherelease,Aaron Linke,48,whohadahistoryoffelony weaponsanddrugchargesinWhiteside County,wasshotthemorningofOct.21 inatwo-storyhomeinthe600blockof NorthCherryStreetby TrooperStuart Baits.

Linkewastakenofflifesupportand diedOct.25.

TheISPBlackhawkAreaTaskForce wastheretoserveasearchwarrant andarrestLinkeinacaseaccusinghim of dealing methamphetamine.

Whenofficersfailedtogetaresponse afterknockingandannouncingtheir presenceandintentmultipletimes, theybreachedthefrontdoor,tossedin aflash-bangdeviceandheardthree shots.

Theyclearedthefirstfloor,which includedgettinganoldermanoutofthe house,andyelledforthose onthesecondfloortocomedownwiththeir

handsup,commandsthatwere ignored.

Anotherflashbangwastossed to thesecond-floor landing,andBaits andanotherofficer,whowerefirst upthestairs, encounteredLinke holdingapistol,whichhepointedat Baits.

Baitsyelled“hands, hands,hands,” butLinke“failedtorespondtothe commands”andBaitsshothimthreetimes in the head.

Linkealsofiredashotthathit a nearbywindow.

Fivegunswerefound inthe home, threeby Linke’s body, “Thetotalityofthesecircumstances wouldleadanyreasonableofficerto concludethattheuseofdeadlyforce wasnecessarytopreventdeath orgreat bodilyharmofhimselforfellowofficers.TrooperBaitswasjustified in usingdeadlyforce,”Costellosaidinthe release.

Awomanwasfoundinthebathroom with agunshotwoundinherabdomen fromagunthatLinkefired.A manwas foundinabedroom.Nofurtherinformationon themhasbeenreleased.

Accordingtotherelease,Costello’s office reviewed23hoursoffootagefrom theofficers’bodycameras,118hoursof

videofromhomesurveillancesystems, 13hoursofinterviews,5,000pagesof reportsand 1,000photographs.

Atthetimeofhisdeath,Linkewas freeonbondinthreependingWhitesideCountycases.

OnSept.29,2017,hewascharged withaggravatedunlawfuluseof a weapon,possessionofaweaponby a felonandpossession of meth.

OnMarch 13,2019,hewascharged withpossessionofafirearmbyafelon andviolatinghisbond.

OnApril29,2019,hewascharged withsixcountsofpossessionofafirearmbyafelon, possessionofacontrolledsubstanceandpossessionof meth.

Hewassetforastatushearinginall threeNov.30.

LinkewasarrestedMarch12,2019, andwasinWhitesideCountyjailuntil Feb.25,2021,whenhisbail was reduced from$250,000to$150,000.Heposted $15,000andwasreleasedwithaGPS monitor,jail recordsshow.

Coffey guides Steamers to first Sweet 16 since 1973

Theformerplayerandcurrentcoach hasbeenpartofnineoftheSteamers’30 seasonsinprogramhistorywith20wins or more–basicallyone-thirdof them –andfour ofthosehavebeen inthepast sixyearsunderCoffey’sguidance.

Healsowaspartoffour20-winseasonsinhisfour-yearplayingcareerfrom 1999-2003asFultonwent96-19inthat span.ThelasttimetheSteamers advancedtothesectionalfinalwashis sophomoreseasonin2001.

That is, untilthisseason.Ledby juniorBaylenDamhoffandseniorEthan Price,Fultonwon26gamesandclaimed itssecondregionaltitleunderCoffey Thatmakes twotitlesinthe pastfour seasonsafternotwinningoneintheprevious18.Theythenwonthesectional semifinaltoadvance totheSweet16for thefirsttimesince1972-73.

ForleadingtheSteamerstotheir fourthSweet16appearanceinschoolhistory,Coffeyisthe2022-23SaukValley MediaBoysBasketball CoachoftheYear.

Earlyon,itdidn’tlooklikeFulton wouldreturntothesameheightsaslast seasonafterlosingseveralstrongsenior leaderstograduationoffaschool-record 29-winteam.ButtheSteamerskeptpluggingawayandeventuallygotthingsrollingduringa15-gamewinningstreakin thelatterpartoftheseason.

“WhatIreallythinksticksouttome aboutthisseasoniswekindofstartedoff reallyslow.Wecameoutoffootballand wewerekindofbangedupandwewere kindofmixingandmatchinglineups ThenfinallyatChristmastime,things startedtoturn.Ourguysreallystarted toplaygoodbasketball,”Coffeysaid. “Wewentonthat15-gamewinstreak, andjusttoseethedifferenceofhow thingswerechangingwiththisgroup fromthebeginningtothe end,Ireally enjoyed seeingthegrowthandhowwe kindofturnedthingsaround.”

Ironically,ashotastheSteamersgot betweenErie’sWarkinsMemorialTournamentattheendofDecemberuntilthe firstweekinFebruary,itwasa38-36loss inPoloonFeb.8 thatmighthavesetup thepostseasonrun.

Thatlosssnappedthelongwinning streak andprovidedtheSteamerswith theironlyNUICSouthlossinthepast twoseasons.Butitalsoprovidedthe motivationforthenextfewweeks.

“Sometimesyouneed alittlewake-up calljusttokeepyougoingandtounderstandthatit’snotalwaysgoingtobe easy,”Coffeysaid.“Inourarea,there’sso

manygoodprogramsandteamsthatno matterwhoyou’replayingorwhattheir recordis,it’snever easy.Sotohavealittleremindertokindofcheckyourself andsay,‘Hey,we’vestillgottocontinue togetbetterandwecan’tjustreston beingonastreak,we’vegottocontinueto elevateourgame,’ especiallyas youhead intothepostseason was goodforus.”

DamhoffhasbeenpartoftheresurgenceoftheFultonprogramasanAllStateplayereachofthepasttwoseasons.

“Heholdsustoahigh standardand heexpects ustoworkhard,sowetryto liveuptohim.Healwayspushesusto neverbesatisfied,soIfeellikethathas influencedustoworkashard as possible,”Damhoffsaid “Healwaystalks aboutjustdoingthelittlethings,really. “Itstartswiththefactthatwe’vehad lotsofreallygoodathletescomethrough. Alotofguysthatarewillingtowork hardandputinalotoftime.Becauseif youwanttoconsistentlybegood,ittakes alotoftimeandalotofeffort,andI’ve beenprettyluckywhereI’vehadalotof guysthatarewillingtogiveuptheirtime andkindofbuyintowhatwe’vebeen tryingtopreachhere–andthat’sequaled success,”Coffeysaid.“SoI’mpretty luckytohaveplayersandsomeassistant coachesthatreallyareonthesamepage andreallyhavethesamegoalinmind, andthat’sjusttomakeourprogramsuccessfulyearin,yearout.”
