12th annual Lincoln Highway Car Show

Dozens of hot rods lined the streets of Franklin Grove on Saturday, May 11, for the 12th annual Lincoln Highway Car Show. Neil Johnson of Lyndon celebrated his birthday Saturday by bringing his 1967 Chevelle to the Lincoln Highway Car Show. Johnson has had the car for 50 years. Proceeds from the show are going to build handicapped accessible restrooms in the village’s Atlasta Park.

Prophetstown’s John Crady Memorial 5K run is June 1

The fourth annual John Crady Memorial 5K Run will be Saturday, June 1, in Prophetstown.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. at Eclipse Square Memorial Park on the corner of state Route 78 and Railroad Street. For runners, the entry fee is $25. Online registration will be available until 5 p.m. May 23. Registration also will be available on-site at 7 a.m. June 1.

The run serves as a tribute to John Crady, who was an avid runner and golfer during his lifetime.

Runners will start in front of the Eclipse Square Memorial Park on Rail-

road Street. The course will continue to a three-way intersection, where runners will turn right onto Lyndon Road. After a short distance, they will turn left on Mill Road, continue until they reach the marked cone, then turn around and reach the finish line at Eclipse Square Memorial Park on Railroad Street.

The course will not be closed to traffic.

After the race, trophies will be awarded to the first male and female finishers as well as the first masters male and female finishers. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group. All runners that sign up before May 16 will be awarded with commemorative shirts, which also will be

available at the race. Fresh fruits, cookies and beverages will be available for participants.

At the park, there will be a silent auction table and an informational booth for Gift of Hope, an organ donor nonprofit organization.

Crady was a donor and the family encourages others to sign up, according to a news release.

All proceeds will be donated to Erie-Prophetstown High School golf and cross country teams and the Junior High cross country teams.

Area farmers recognized with STAR rating for conservation

Farmers Arlan Cox and Travis Smeltzly were recognized as STAR farmers by the Rock Island Soil and Water Conservation District.

The two farms in the northern part of Rock Island County earned the high rating based on implementing several conservation practices including grassed filterstrips, wildlife areas, no-till or reduced tillage and cover crops. They also apply fertilizer based on GPS soil tests and crop needs.

Cox from Port Byron credits erosion control on his rolling cropland as the No. 1 reason to use cover crops. Even with no-till farming, he is concerned about heavy spring rains causing soil erosion after soybeans. There is less residue from soybeans compared with cornstalks in the fall. Planting cereal rye after soybean harvest provides more cover and reduces Cox’s fear of erosion. Cox plants cereal rye ahead of both corn and soybeans. He said management of planting corn into cereal rye is more difficult than soybeans.

Rich Stewart with the Rock Island SWCD office mentioned there are other options besides cereal rye prior to corn. Triticale or barley are not as aggressive as cereal rye and easier to control at termination time or a winter kill option such as oats and oil-seed radish is viable, Stewart said.

NAMI Sauk Area speakers to share personal stories of mental illness

It’s a statement of fact, as well as the name of NAMI Sauk Area’s May 21 event. The hourlong program will feature three speakers, including one from the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ In Our Own Voice program.

“In Our Own Voice is a program that NAMI offers in order for the public to hear real-life stories of people living with mental illness and how they manage life, their recovery, all that,” said Mary Thormahlen, a volunteer who handles NAMI Sauk Area’s social media and facilitates its Connections Recovery Support Group.

Thormahlen will be the event’s In Our Own Voice speaker, sharing her

experience of raising two young children while living with mental illness. She will be joined by certified perinatal counselor Jamie Leech, of Jamie Leech Counseling, and Tammy Steward, of Sinnissippi Centers.

Each speaker will have 20 minutes to talk, Thormahlen said. A question-and-answer period will follow that attendees are welcome to stay later to participate in, she said.

NAMI Sauk Area is an affiliate of the national NAMI organization and of NAMI Illinois. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it serves Ogle, Lee, Carroll and Whiteside counties.

First formed in 1979 around a kitchen table, NAMI now is “the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of

growing. Providing a cover in the spring keeps the sand from blowing as well. Besides no-till and cover crops, the farm in Cordova Township has filterstrips and a shallow water area for wildlife.

Thanks to these practices, soil erosion is reduced to at or below the tolerable soil loss limit as determined by the USDA-NRCS office. Water quality is improved because of the fertilizer application rates and less sediment leaving their fields. Wildlife habitat is benefited by having areas dedicated to wildlife management.

A sign signifying a 4 STAR rating will be placed at their farms. STAR is an acronym that stands for Saving Tomorrows Agriculture Resources. STAR is a free statewide tool to assist farmers and landowners in evaluating their nutrient and soil loss management practices on individual fields. The purpose is to help farmers understand and better meet the goals of the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy.

The STAR evaluation program assigns points for each cropping, tillage, nutrient application and soil conservation activity on individual fields. The star rating system for a field can be anywhere from one to five stars.

The Rock Island Soil and Water Conservation District is happy to present the STAR award to each of these farmers.

Clinton Symphony Pops Concert is June 2

The Clinton Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual Pops Concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 2, in Clinton’s Riverview Park.

Timber Lake Playhouse to open season with summer kickoff party

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse, the premier professional summer theater of northwest Illinois, will celebrate TLPalooza featuring food, drink, music, tours of the theater and games for the kids beginning at noon Saturday, May 25.

Timber Lake Playhouse, operating in its 63th year, kicks off the season by inviting the community to the playhouse for a Summer Kick-off Party. The party features the TLP Beer Garden, music, guided tours of the theater and the back lot, food and games for the kids.

Kids can enjoy games all afternoon at the giant dart board, popping balloons for prizes, playing in the duck pond, jumping in the bounce house and riding the barrel ride. All this and face painting are available for the price of a $10 wristband.

GENE A. OTTENS, 84, of Resthave Home in Morrison, IL, died Monday, May 6, 2024 at Resthave. His funeral service will be at 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. There will be a visitation prior to the funeral, from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial has been established to Resthave Home in Morrison.

Gene was born August 2, 1939, in Morrison, IL, to John K. and Henrietta (Haan) Ottens. He first attended school in Milledgeville and Thomson, IL, then later attended the Benton Street Grade School in Prophetstown. In 1958 he graduated from Prophetstown High School. On October 2, 1959 he married Phyllis Ann Jaquet in Prophetstown. She died June 19, 2014. Gene worked at Penberthy Manufacturing Company in Prophetstown for 46 years until retiring in 2006. He was a member of the former Morrison Christian Reformed Church in Morrison, where he served as an

Jerry was born January 22, 1954 in Moline, IL, to Guy W. and Charlesa O. (Heather) Woodhurst. He graduated from Annawan High School in 1972. He worked for Trackmasters Inc., installing and maintaining railroad lines. He was blessed to spend 41 years with his wife, Judith F. Murphy.

Jerry loved the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed painting art, fishing and woodworking.

Amish community benefit dinner and bake sale is May 24 FULTON – The Amish community will be holding a benefit dinner and bake

sale from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, at the Yoder residence, 9108 Lincoln Road, Fulton.

The good old-fashioned homecooked dinner includes chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, noodles, mixed vegetables, salad and pie and ice cream for dessert.

Monster trucks return to 2024 Whiteside County Fair

MORRISON – The Whiteside County Fair is excited to announce it will have Full Throttle Monster Trucks back again

on Thursday, Aug. 15.

People also will get to see the famous Big Foot truck at this year’s fair.

Monster trucks have been a favorite form of entertainment for decades. Since the 1970s, monster trucks have raced, done tricks and smashed numerous cars.

Make sure you don’t miss this exciting night of entertainment at the Whiteside County Fair.

People will get to see several trucks in front of the grandstand at 7 p.m.

The fair opens on Tuesday, Aug. 13, and concludes after five fun-filled days on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The financial campaign for the Harbor Crest Home passed the $75,000 mark this week as the Fulton phase of the campaign entered its final stages and plans were being perfected for carrying the appeal to Clinton businesses. The American Legion Fulton Post joined in the effort with a gift of $900. Indications are several gifts of $1,500 to $2,000 will be forthcoming as soon as final action of boards of directors is obtained.

Bob’s Jack and Jill Grocery store has changed its name to Bob’s Certified Food Center. Bob’s Certified Food Center is now part owner of the world’s largest cooperative food distributing facility. All profits realized from the warehouse facility are passed on to customers of Certified food stores. This means lower prices for quality merchandise.

50 Years

May 15, 1974

George Connor, a former resident of Fulton and a graduate of Fulton High School, has been chosen Conservation Teacher of the Year by the Whiteside County Soil and Water Conservation District. Connor teaches sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at Union

Grove Consolidated School in the Prairie Center building. Connor has been an associate director of the conservation district for the past two years and has emphasized the importance of conservation in his teaching.

After a highly successful year in 1973, Harbor Crest Home is making plans for an expansion program that may cost as much as $900,000 to $950,000. Preliminary plans call for additions that would enlarge the capacity of the home from 51 beds to about 140 beds. Alice Sikkema, who was chosen grand marshal of the 1994 Dutch Days Festival parade, rode through the parade route in an open automobile with her husband and children accompanying her. At the reviewing stand, Mayor Kenneth Ven Huizen stopped the parade and presented her with the key to the city.

15-year-old Miss Deby Wilber of Fulton was a winner in the Model Search Contest held in conjunction with Younkers’ third annual “Spring Break” promotional event. The contest was conducted throughout the chain of 53 department stores. Wilbur will be featured in a Younkers advertising promotional piece. She won a $200 wardrobe and up to $200 in travel expenses.

The building that stood on the corner of 11th Avenue was demolished. Fire consumed the middle portion of the building March 9. After a lengthy investigation into the cause of the fire, it was concluded the cause was undetermined. A 51-year-old woman is still considered missing. Police Chief Jim Rhoades said

there has been no new information on the case.

Unity Christian School’s science department received a Flikkema grant for $1,350 to upgrade its microscopes and dissecting kits. The equipment that will be replaced is more than 20 years old and functioning poorly.

Friends for Charity officers Judy Vogel and Audrey Balk received a check for $1,000 from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation. The grant money will be donated to Fulton Elementary School to be used for buying milk tickets as needed. The Friends for Charity organization is a group of local volunteers who work together to offer financial assistance to those in need, including schools, nursing homes, individual families and area fire and flood victims.

Rethinking the function of carbon dioxide is discussed

In junior high science, we often are taught a partial truth. Humans give off carbon dioxide that plants need because we don’t need it and in return the plants give us oxygen as a waste product that they do not need. Once we are ready to move beyond the fact that carbon dioxide is more than a waste product, we can begin to see its benefit and perform activities and exercises to enhance the impact.

As a side note, masks do not alter the carbonate oxide to oxygen ratios in our bodies, but rather how we feel about such measures.

Indeed, we typically think of a buildup of carbon dioxide as something that signals the lungs to take in more oxygen. However, the higher our threshold, which is indicated by the ability to tolerate extra carbon dioxide, the calmer

Carbon dioxide also plays a significant role in what we call a sigh. Indeed, a sigh is a deep breath, but not one that is voluntary. It tends to start out as normal breath, but we take a second breath on top of it. It is these extra big second breaths that offer a super squeeze to the more than 500,000 small units in the lungs, known as alveoli, that help exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. If

The exhale test developed by Brian, McKenzie and Rob Wilson is a test to check whether your parasympathetic nervous system is helping you recover from an athletic type of workout or otherwise provide useful information for you. This strategy measures the carbon dioxide discard time. The test begins with three nasal breaths in for three seconds and three seconds out. With the fourth nasal breaths, the goal is to inhale as much as you can, then slowly release all of the breath in the body. With this exercise, 20 to 40 seconds is considered average for athletes, although the general population may find this challenging. Forty to 60 seconds is intermediate and 60 to 80 seconds is considered advanced.

Three Rivers Athletic Conference Meet: At Rockridge, Bureau Valley scored 81 points to edge Kewanee by a point for the team title. What made the feat that much more impressive is the Storm didn’t win a single event.

Fulton runs away with title at Bureau Valley Sectional

Newman, Erie-Prophetstown, Bureau Valley, Amboy sending multiple athletes to state

MANLIUS – Fulton junior Emery Wherry said she can’t explain it, but she’s made a huge leap forward during this track and field season.

Boy, did it show May 8.

Wherry had personal records in three events to qualify for the IHSA Class 1A state meet in all three at the Bureau Valley Sectional.

Wherry won the triple jump with a leap of 10.47 meters and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.05 seconds) and 300 hurdles (48.51).

“I am so excited,” Wherry said. “This is brand-new. Usually I got (to be) an alternate, so being in my own events is extremely exciting and I am really proud of myself and how far I’ve come. I’ve had a big, old takeoff. Last year, I was not nearly as good.”

Wherry called her win in the triple “shocking and exciting” but credited a strong second phase for her PR jump.

“I would say my second phase for sure (was key) because before I would always be super choppy with it and everyone would always tell me and I just couldn’t fix it for some reason even though I knew in my head I had to,” Wherry said. “But today I just really focused on striding and it really helped me.”

Behind Wherry and eight other state qualifiers, the Steamers ran away with the team title with 126 points to outdistance second-place Bureau Valley (88.5).

“It’s so exciting,” Wherry said. “I’m just super proud of my team and how far we’ve come and how we’ve all improved. We’ve all improved so much. I’m just proud of everybody.”

Paige Cramer won the long jump (5.33) while teammate Miraya Pessman was runner-up (5.26), Kylie Smither qualified in both throws as she finished second in discus (31.39) and third in the shot put (10.97). Brooklyn Thoms placed third in the 100 (12.72). Cramer, Pessman, Smither in the discus and Thoms all recorded PRs.

The Steamers also are sending all four relays to state as they won the 4x200 (1:47.53) and placed second in the 4x100 (51.05), 4x400 (4:14.99) and 4x800 (10:31.67). Thoms and Pessman ran on the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

The host Storm qualified three relays for state. The foursome of Connie Gibson, Taylor Neuhalfen, Kate Salisbury and McKinley Canady won against a strong field in the 4x100 (50.58) that saw

six teams advance. They also placed second in the 4x200 (1:49.23).

“It’s amazing,” said Canady, a firstyear track runner as a junior. “I love my relays. They’re really great.”

Canady anchored both sprint relays.

“I could see in the corner of my eye that Fulton was struggling with the handoff, so I just knew I had to push for the last straightaway,” Canady said. “I could tell that we had it at that point.”

In the 4x400, Salisbury, Cady, Gibson and Emma Mussche sneaked in. They placed third in 4:19.66, beating the state qualifying standard of 4:19.68.

Bureau Valley sophomore Maddie Wetzell pulled off the distance double dip with titles in the 3,200 (12:43.11) and 1,600 (5:47.26).

While Wetzell cruised to a 17-second victory in the 3,200, the 1,600 was more of a battle. She was just behind Riverdale’s Clarisa Ostrowski when the bell rang signifying the final lap and she still trailed on the back straightaway before overtaking Ostrowski on the final curve and winning by 3 1/2 seconds.

“I was thinking I don’t want to lose,” Wetzell said. “I’m a very competitive person. I heard my coaches and people cheering for me saying I had to go. I really wanted it, so I had to fight for what I wanted.

“(When I passed her), I was just thinking, ‘You have to go.’ I didn’t know how close she was behind me. I couldn’t really hear anything. I just wanted to cross that finish line.”

Teammate Addie Wessel joins Wetzell as a double state qualifier. She beat the mark in the 100 hurdles (16.65) and 300 hurdles (49.07). Lynzie Cady leapt 5.01 to be one of five qualifiers in the long jump.

Newman had three qualifiers in Elaina Allen, Kennedy Rowzee and Ella Ford.

“It feels really good,” Reymer said. “I missed (state) the past two years just by a little bit, so I just felt real good making it. We threw here two years ago and I didn’t have good memories here. I decided I had to make some better memories. I just wanted to have good memories leaving BV for the last time.

“I knew I was ranked first and had a high chance of going, so I just told myself to go out there and just grip it and rip it. That’s been my motto this whole season.”

E-P had two qualifiers in the pole vault. Olivia Purvis took third (2.92) and Gracelyn Abell was fourth (2.77).

Rowzee placed second in the shot with a toss of 11.01. Ford took third in the high jump by clearing 1.53.

Erie-Prophetstown had a strong night in the field events.

Sarah Link placed second in the 800 (2:31.25) and anchored the Panthers’ 4x800 relay to a third-place finish in a state-qualifying 10:34.97.

The Amboy co-op also had multiple qualifiers in Elly Jones in the 100 hurdles (third, 16.56) and triple jump (third, 10.33), Bella Yanos in the long jump (fifth, 5) and Jillian Anderson in the high jump (second, 1.53) along with the Clippers’ 4x100 relay (sixth, 52.05), which included Jones and Yanos.

A wreath is placed in honor of those that did not come home. Roll call is read and as each name is called, a flag is placed as the bell tolls. A salute is fired by the Legion post and taps is played and the piper responds.

The other purpose of this notice is to inform the public of the proposed construction will convert approximately 13.24 acres of farmland for the solar array of an 28.23 acre tract. This land is considered Prime and important farmland and the proposal has been reviewed by the Natural Resource Conservation Service and IL Department of Agriculture. In review of the proposed project, alternative sites or actions that would avoid these impacts and methods that could be used to minimize these impacts were investigate d and the proposed alternative appears to be the most feasible.

Rabe Consulting prepared an environmental assessment for RD that describes the project, assesses the proposed project 's environmenta l impacts, and summarizes as applicable any mitigation measures used to minimize environmental effects.
