Morrison couple Mitchell and Anna Story take over Rockwood Restaurant and Marina

MORRISON – More than 15 years ago, when he was still in high school, Mitchell Story of Morrison would spend his summer days working at the Rockwood Restaurant and Marina.
Nestled along the shore of Lake Carlton in Morrison-Rockwood State Park, the cabin-like restaurant for the past five decades has drawn in the fishermen who dot the lake throughout the day, people camping in the state park and motorists or bicyclists who head to the lake to take in the scenery.
Story, who worked as a breakfast cook at the restaurant and in the bait shop, got to know the business quite well during his high school summers when it was operated by Chuck and Mary Norton. Story hoped someday he would be able to operate the restaurant and marina.
“I’ve always loved this place and I always had the dream of coming back out here and taking it over. And finally had the chance to do it,” he said in an interview with Shaw Local News Network.
That is exactly what is happening this week as Story and his wife, Anna, open the doors to the restaurant they have renovated and will operate under a lease with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
They also will run the bait shop below the restaurant, which provides necessities for those who fish off the adjacent docks or drop their boat from the launch, accessible from the restaurant and marina parking lot. Paddleboats, kayaks and canoes can be rented through the bait shop. The shop will have live bait, basic fishing tackle and basic camping necessities for sale.
It’s a big step for the young couple, who have been joined by Mitchell’s father, Lauren Story, as a business partner, but it was a step they had envisioned for years.
Mitchell and Anna both attended Morrison High School. Mitchell graduated in 2009. Anna, who worked as a waitress in the restaurant for one summer season,

graduated in 2010. Anna went on to get a teaching degree. Mitchell became a mail carrier in Clinton, Iowa. Along the way, the couple married and now have a 2-yearold son, Vincent.
After eight years of carrying mail, Mitchell worked in maintenance for the U.S. Postal Service for another four years. Anna became a teacher in the Morrison School District in 2016 and teaches first grade at Northside Elementary School.
Both knew if the opportunity to take over the restaurant and marina ever surfaced, they would make the move. When the restaurant and campground lease opened up for bid earlier this year, the couple decided to pursue it and created a limited liability company. Mitchell attended the required pre-bid meeting, they submitted a bid and were awarded the contract.
Under the agreement, they can operate the facility for five years. They can renew the contract four times for a total of 25 years.
That’s exactly what the couple wants to do. Their commitment to the restaurant and marina runs so deep that Anna suggested Mitchell leave the postal service to devote all his time to it. He took her up on it.
“He’s been talking about this for 15 years, since I’ve known him, and it’s always kind of been in the back of our minds as a dream of ours to run the place,” Anna said.
“I saw the potential in this place and wanted to realize that,” Mitchell said.
Since their winning bid, they have made repairs, deep cleaned the restaurant, painted walls, bought furnishings, tables, chairs, new fixtures and appliances and finalized their full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.
The couple also have been working in the bait shop, setting it up as Mitchell remembers it from his days working there. They have been busy hiring workers.
“It’s been such a blur these last couple months of trying to get everything ready and ordering equipment and bringing stuff in and getting it set up,” Mitchell

“All the tables and all the chairs, the high chairs, all the dishes, everything had to be found and bought and picked up,” Anna said.
All that’s left is to pass the final restaurant inspection scheduled for this week. The couple’s goal is to have the restaurant open for business on Father’s Day weekend. Breakfast hours will be from 7 to 11 a.m. Lunch and dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be daily specials Tuesday through Saturday, Mitchell said, and there will be a handbreaded catfish filet dinner every Friday.
In the days leading up to opening, the couple will put the final touches in place for customers who will be coming in for full meals, baked goods that Mitchell creates – cookies, scones and muffins – and hand-dipped ice cream in a cone or a dish.

History of the park
Morrison-Rockwood State Park is at 18750 Lake Road, Morrison, and is a popular spot for a family outing at the Lakeview picnic area or watching birds among the hickory, ash, oak and walnut trees, according to the IDNR.
The park, composed of 1,164 acres, was established in 1971 and officially opened for day use that year.
The park is named for the city of Morrison and a combination of nearby Rock Creek and the heavily wooded park area Rockwood.
Lake Carlton, a focal point of the park, is a watershed impoundment constructed in 1969 by building a 38-foot high, 1,800-foot long earthen dam across a stream.
The park can be reached by taking Interstate 88 west to state Route 78. Go north on Illinois 78 through Morrison and follow the signs. On Illinois 78 follow the signs to Damen Road. Follow that road about two miles to Crosby Road. Turn left on Crosby Road, again following the signs, for about 11/2 miles to the park entrance.

Soldier killed in Korean War buried with full military honors

ROCK FALLS – The remains of a Rock Falls man who was declared missing in action while fighting in the Korean War nearly 74 years ago were buried with full military honors June 4 at a Rock Falls cemetery.
U.S. Army Cpl. Richard Seloover, who was 17 at the time, went missing in action Sept. 6, 1950.
He was accounted for Jan. 10 after scientists at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified his remains. After 74 years in a grave labeled unknown, his remains were returned to Rock Falls on May 30.
Through DNA testing, scientists at the DPAA were able to narrow it down to three possible matches. Out of those three, Seloover was the only one who was 17 at the time that he died, David Rupp, brother-in-law to Seloover, said in an interview with Shaw Local.
Janice Rupp-Fischer, wife of David Rupp, was 5 years old when her brother enlisted in the U.S. Army.
Back in the 1950s, it was common for people to enlist in the military when they were underage. Seloover hated school, she said.
“He was going to join the service and see the world,” Janice said in an inter-

Right after he enlisted, the war in Korea broke out. Seloover completed his basic training while on a ship heading to Korea, she said.

Whiteside County lands $1M public health services grant

ROCK FALLS – Whiteside County will receive more than $1 million to administer public health services to communities in western Illinois.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen of Illinois’ 17th Congressional District announced in a news release June 4 that the county will receive $1,045,348.
“Communities across western Illinois deserve access to affordable and reliable health care,” Sorensen said. “With these critical investments coming to Whiteside County, we are working together to make sure our neighbors, regardless of how much money they make, get the health care they need. In Congress, I will always fight to bring tax dollars back home to support working families.”
HHS awarded the grant as part of its Health Center Cluster program. The Whiteside County Health Department
operates as a Federally Qualified Health Center, which provides services to families of all backgrounds, regardless of their ability to pay.
“As an FQHC, we provide valuable resources with a focus on our most vulnerable populations,” said Cheryl Lee, the Whiteside County Health Department’s public health administrator and chief executive officer. “At Whiteside County Community Health Clinic, we provide medical, dental, behavioral health, medication-assisted treatment, psychiatric and oral surgery services. We will be adding optometry services later this year.”
“It is through the HRSA funding as an FQHC that we are able to provide these services to our community. We are thankful for the opportunity to receive these funds and serve our community,” she said.

He concluded the eulogy by reciting a quote by U.S. Army General George Patton: “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.”
Col. Adam Dietrich of Fort Snelling, Minnesota, led troops in a flag-folding ceremony. Military personnel conducted the playing of taps and gave a three-volley salute, which involved a rifle party of four men firing blank cartridges into the air three times.

“The fact that he is going to be with mom gives me a great sense of peace,” she said.

Jason A. Stutzke, 53, of Sterling, died Tuesday, May 28, 2024, suddenly at his home. He was born November 15, 1970 in Sterling to Kurt and Elisa (Donna) Stutzke. He worked construction for many years and helped on the farm at Blue Goose Run. He was a lifelong musician, loved playing the guitar, recording, writing music, making videos, artist and a painter. He had love in his heart.

grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He graduated from Delaware Township High School in 1961, then served in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic. While serving in Tucson, Arizona, he met Virginia Mahoney. Derek and Virginia were married on August 20, 1966 at the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Moose, Wyoming. They settled in Illinois where Derek attended Shimer College. Derek and Virginia spent the next 52 years making the communities of Mount Carroll, Chadwick and Morrison Illinois their homes. Throughout this time, they were faithful members of the Church of St. Anne in Morrison. They were blessed with two sons, Dale and Michael. In retirement, they loved spending time at their condo in Fountain Hills, Arizona. After Virginia’s death, Derek was blessed to spend 6 years at Park Terrace Assisted Living in

Derek loved working on his hobby farm in Chadwick, collecting antiques, coins and artwork, volunteering at his church, and showing off his classic cars at various car shows. Most of all, he loved to make people laugh.

Kids’ fishing derby is June 15 in Prophetstown PROPHETSTOWN – Kids can try their luck to catch a fish and a prize during the Prophetstown Police Department’s annual Dick Brown Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 15.
The popular event has been held along the shore of the Rock River at Prophetstown State Park for 18 years.
Age divisions and fishing times are:
• Ages 0-6, 8 to 9 a.m.
• Ages 7-10, 9 to 10 a.m.
• Ages 11-14, 10 to 11 a.m.
Prizes are donated by local businesses for each age group.
All anglers are required to have a parent sign a registration form that can be picked up before the event at the Prophetstown Police Department, 339 Washington St. Forms also will be available at the derby.

Sterling Federal Bank named one of Best Places to Work in Illinois
STERLING – Sterling Federal Bank recently was named one of the Best Places to Work in Illinois by the Best Companies Group.
The awards program and state survey identify, recognize and honor Illinois’ best places of employment.

Bring a pencil, notebook, apron and an old pair of long socks. Registration for the event takes place through ZSuite, the Illinois 4-H enrollment system.

A big step in Fulton’s industrial development program was taken when the County Board of Supervisors voted to include an airplane landing strip for Fulton in the operations of the Whiteside County Airport Authority. A strip 200 feet wide and 3,825 feet long is to be furnished by Drives, Inc. for development as a landing strip to be operated as part of the Whiteside County Authority, which also operates the county airport near Rock Falls.
At a special meeting, members of the City Council voted unanimously to buy the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad property located on Third Street between 11th and 12th avenues. The tract includes five lots and the old station and freight house, which were abandoned by the railroad company when it ceased operation in Fulton. Purchase price was $5,000, which will be paid out of the city’s sales tax revenue.

Both bowling teams sponsored by the Fulton Body Shop won first-place trophies at the end of the season. The
occasion was celebrated with a dinner for the team members and their spouses given by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cox, owners of the body shop. Both teams presented their first-place trophies to Mr. and Mrs. Cox. Representing the women’s team were Mr. and Mrs. Jay VanZuiden, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Norman, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Tiesman and Mrs. James Evans. Representing the men’s team were Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Wiebenga, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Pessman and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Huizenga.
Through the cooperation of city and school officials and citizens working with a special Tennis Committee, Fulton soon will have four new tennis courts and a newly surfaced court at School Park. The River Bend School Board has let a contract to the Determan Blacktop Company of Clinton for $10,500 to complete construction of four new courts on school property located just west of 12th Street across from the junior high school.

Dale Green, a member of the Fulton Fire Protection District, received a state-issued certified firefighters certifi-
cate from Fulton Fire Chief Delbert Housenga. Green successfully completed the test on ropes, ladders, laying hoses, first aid and fire fighting.
A grand reopening will take place for the area’s only clock specialty store, the Sundial Time Center, located at 1213 Fourth St. It has been a Fulton business for many years, selling watches and repairing watches and clocks. The business has expanded and is selling grandfather clocks, wall clocks and cuckoo and novelty clocks. Mrs. and Mrs. Peter Maliszewski are the owners.

Cookie’s Corner Restaurant at 927 14th Ave. has been closed while new owners take overhe business. Owners Saban Saliu, Megan and Melissa all will have active roles in the business. The restaurant’s name will remain the same but hours will be expanded.
There was a ribbon-cutting for the newly refurbished 12th Street tennis courts. The Fulton Community Fund contributed money for two years to help complete the project. The Fulton Kiwanis Club contributed the majority of its fundraising projects for the past two years to the courts. Cost of the two-
year project was nearly $30,000.

A memorial Mass will be offered by Rev. James Keenan for the late President Ronald Reagan on June 11 at Immaculate Conception Church, 703 12th Ave. The memorial Mass will coincide with the National Day of Mourning. Reagan’s parents, John and Nellie Wilson Reagan, were married at Immaculate Conception Parish on Nov. 8, 1903.
Fulton’s 4x400 relay placed second at state. Team members included Mark Clarkson, Drew VanZuiden and Matt Ottens. They were coached by Craig Faulkner.

Darryl Hogue has been hired as River Bend’s new superintendent. He served as a junior high principal in Morrison for the past nine years.

Mast cell activation syndrome can cause many symptoms

Chances are you have never heard of a common condition called mast cell activation syndrome. It may be because your medical team has not heard of it. Nonetheless, the condition is far more common than has been recognized and may account for not only many symptoms, but many symptoms that have not been explained to date.
Many with this condition have been labeled psychosomatic and overly sensitive. Indeed, such individuals may feel that way along with the frustration that traditional medicine has not had adequate answers. Many aspects of autism may be explained by this condition.
The mast cell is part of the immune system that has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. Like most measures of the immune system, mast cells are produced in order to protect us. It is when there is an over-expression or activation of the mast cells that people have problems. Those problems may include potentially all expressions of allergic reactions. This includes itching and swelling of the skin, all the way to wheezing and even anaphylaxis or shock. Diarrhea and head-
aches are common. Triggers may include traditional allergies, medications, infections or chemicals such as fragrances. Stress is a common cause, but even exercise and, unfortunately, many foods may cause mast cell activation syndrome.
Mast cell activation syndrome is not to be confused with the rare disease known as mastocytosis. Sometimes a leukemia-like condition may be expressed with this latter rare condition. Mast cell activation syndrome occurs when the mast cells release an overabundance of chemicals into the blood. These chemicals normally may be protective for humans, but when done in excess, they can cause an expression of the above symptoms and more. Histamine is one of the more common chemicals that is released. In reality, there may be hundreds, if not thousands, of related types of chemicals that lead to inflammation and the above symptoms. The condition also may include intestinal issues and low blood pressure, fainting, chronic pain, headaches and abdominal pain.
The diagnosis is rather complicated because there are not many reliable tests for the condition even if it is suspected, which often it is not. If you are suspected
of having this condition, your medical team might diagnose the condition in hindsight based on the unexplained symptoms. Sometimes levels of tryptase or histamine may be excessive in the blood. Most often a trial of treatment by antihistamines helps to suppress the condition. There are two types of antihistamines. The first is antihistamine one, which is the general environmental allergies category. Benadryl and hydroxyzine are older agents that help to block this.
Many specialists prefer to use newer-generation antihistamines such as Zyrtec or Claritin because these are far less sedating. They also impact the central nervous system less in terms of negative side effects. However, hydroxyzine is still favored by many clinicians because it is well tolerated and because it can cross the blood-brain barrier. It also may help with sleep. Another histamine mainly is confined to the gut and is known as H2 histamine. This is blocked by medicines such as Zantac or ranitidine or Pepcid or famotidine, etc.
Sometimes higher-than-normal doses of these medicines may be used by the experienced clinician. The patient needs to exercise precautions though
before they take on the higher-than-normal dosages. This needs to be done under the guidance of your clinician.
Nutrition plays an incredible role with this condition, as one might expect, given that foods can cause the release of histamine. Molds are particularly common triggers. The air we breathe also is a common trigger. Stress may be a common trigger. The complexity of this condition may take many years to recognize and many years to effectively treat. As with most conditions, avoidance of the potentially offending agents is the most helpful. In most cases of mast cell activation syndrome, no amount of medicine may overcome the condition unless the triggers have been minimized.
Many who treat this begin by putting patients on an H1blocker such as Zyrtec and an H2 blocker such as Pepcid. They often will add low-dose Naltrexone, which is best prepared by a compounding pharmacist. Compounded bismuth is used by some. Korean red ginseng has been found to be beneficial. DAO enzymes and bile ox acid supplements may help. Many feel Motegrity compares with Naltrexone. Iberogast is a product that helps move food and its breakdowns through the intestinal tract.

In 2023, as in years past, your tap water met all USEPA and state drinking water health standards. Our system vigilantly safeguards its groundwater supply, and we are able to report that the department had no violations of a contaminant level or of any other water quality standard during the past year. This report summarizes the quality of water that we provided last year, including details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. We are committed to providing you with this information because informed customers are our best allies. Source of Drinking Water
The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it can dissolve naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.
Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the USEPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. USEPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the USEPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800) 426-4791.
In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, USEPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.
Contaminants that may be present in source water include:
• Micro contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife;
• Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which may be naturally occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming;
• Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses;
• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and may also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.
• Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.
Availability of Morrison Source Water Assessment
Below is a summary of the IEPA source water assessment of Morrison’s water system. The full report is available for viewing at City Hall.
Source Water Assessment
Based on information obtained from sampling data, the location of the wells relative to potential sources of contamination, and well depth, the Illinois EPA has determined that the Morrison Community Water Supply’s source water is not susceptible to contamination. As referenced above, this determination is based on a number of criteria including; monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and available hydrogeologic data on the wells.
The Illinois EPA has determined that the Morrison Community Water Supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process; the community’s wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper sitting conditions; a hydraulic barrier exists which should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and the sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community’s wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should prevent the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered a significant factor in the susceptibility determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this system ground water supply.

Source Water Protection Efforts
The Illinois Environmental Protection Act provided minimum protection zones of 200 feet for your wells. These minimum protection zones are regulated by the Illinois EPA. To further reduce the risk to source water, the Facility has implemented a wellhead protection program which includes the proper abandonment of potential routes of groundwater contamination and correction of sanitary defects at the water treatment facility. This effort resulted in the community water supply receiving a special exception permit from the Illinois EPA which allows a reduction in monitoring. The outcome of this monitoring reduction has saved the community considerable laboratory analysis costs.
Vulnerability waiver
Due to favorable monitoring history, aquifer characteristics, and inventory of potential sources of contamination, our water supply was issued a vulnerability waiver renewal for SOCs at Tap2 – Well number 11910 (Well #4). No monitoring for SOCs were required, between January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2023.

Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants.

When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. This contaminant is not currently regulated by USEPA. However, the state has set and MCL for this contaminant for supplies serving a population of 1000 or more.
SODIUM
There is not a state or federal MCL for sodium. Monitoring is required to provide information to consumers and health officials that are concerned about sodium intake due to dietary precautions. If the level is greater than 20 mg/I, and you are on a sodium-restricted diet, you should consult a physician about this level of sodium in the water.
About the Data
An MCL is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. If a facility exceeds the MCL, the facility must immediately investigate treatment options to reduce the level of the contaminant in the water supply. MCL’s are first based on a Reference Dose (RfD) which carries a very low risk of causing adverse health effects. The RfD is obtained by taking the maximum daily dose of a toxic substance that does not produce any observable adverse health effects. This no-observable-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) dosage is divided by safety factors (SF), to obtain the reference dose. Regulatory agencies generally use safety factor values of between 10 to 1,000.

A maximum contaminant level (MCL) for this contaminant has not been established by either state or federal regulations, nor has mandatory health effects language been set. The purpose of unregulated contaminant monitoring is to assist USEPA in determining the occurrence of unregulated contaminants in drinking water and whether future regulation is warranted.

The Ancestor Project
As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.
This project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf and their families. (It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class).
Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you will enjoy their stories, too!
Stephen Francis Ryan

Have you ever wondered what it’s like having the coolest grandpa in the world? Well, I do. Most of his childhood was spent with his family. In his adult years, he started a family in his early 20s. He now enjoys his retirement spending time in his workshop. Stephen Francis Ryan is the best grandpa because he grew up having fun, had the best family, lives life freely and I now get to be a lucky granddaughter.
His full name is Stephen Francis Ryan. He was born on June 23, 1948, in Moline, Illinois. His parents are Raymond and Marie (Dillion) Ryan. He had six sisters and three brothers.
So all together his parents had 10 kids. All of them are alive and well. By all means, I think that is a lot of kids. I don’t think that I could ever handle that many, so props to his parents. His favorite memory as a child was selling Christmas cards. Another favorite memory as a child was getting a bicycle.
He also went to Erie Elementary and Erie Middle School like me. Stephen went on to graduate high school in 1966. He has lived in the Erie area all of his life. He did some sports such as baseball, ran track and was the first Erie wrestler. That is crazy to think of. One of his favorite things to do as a kid was going to the movies on Saturday night in Erie. He also loved going bowling for fun. As a young boy, he did Boy Scouts. One time he went canoeing from the Black Hawk statue to Erie. That is a lot of canoeing.
Stephen married my beautiful grandmother Ann (Dale) Ryan. I am glad that she came into his life. She was one of the best things that came into his life. They got married at the age of 23 years old. That was the only woman he ever married and will forever be the only woman he marries. They have two wonderful children. The oldest one is Shawn Carson Ryan and the youngest one is Shane Arlyn Ryan. Stephen was very hardworking. Stephen worked at John Deere, Erie Casing Plant, and he was a union carpenter. Stephen also was in the U.S. Army. He served in Germany. He went in September 1966 and got out in August 1969. One of his favorite vacations was going to see his uncle Joe. Another favorite vacation was going swimming at Crystal Lake. There was that big flood where they had to get on a boat at the Catholic church and go down River road to get to their house. They rode the boat all the way up to their porch. They had
pigs, so they had to put them in the barn off the ground. After awhile, they got horses and would go trail riding all of the time. Stephen didn’t have much more animals beside that. Additionally, the whole family would go camping with friends and other family. He also did a lot of hunting and fishing. I would say that he is a very outdoorsy kind of person. He went to Colorado to go elk hunting as well. Stephen got a grand slam for turkeys. In other words, that is when you shoot all kinds of turkeys. I think that is crazy! He is a big [Dallas] Cowboys fan. In 1960, he went to a game. He is so lucky! Throughout Stephen’s life, he lived in five homes. Stephen’s greatest achievement was making this beautiful family that he has. His lifelong friend was Gray Willison. They would go hunting and travel together. He was from Ohio, but sadly he passed away. Stephen spends his free time doing yard work and working for my dad, which is the same thing as saying he works for Cardinal Custom Builder. His advice for the younger generations is “Live life one day at a time and always have a smile on your face.” His retirement was from Local 166 Carpenters in 2008. Stephen loves working in his workshop. He makes a lot of stuff for his grandkids. He built a lot of stuff that is in my house. One thing he made was grandpa boxes for all of the grandkids. Stephen and Ann have seven grandkids – five girls and two boys. The grandkids’ names are Kali (Schroeder) Ubersox, Bekah Ryan, Hannah Ryan, Dane Ryan, Hailey Ryan, Reese Ryan and lastly Hudson Ryan. He is a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He takes his younger grandkids every year. He is nicknamed Watermelon. One time a kid couldn’t remember his name, so he would say watermelon, water-
melon, watermelon rhyme and that would make him think of Ryan, so a lot of people call him that. In my opinion, I think that Stephen makes the best vegetable soup in the whole wide world. He also loves to watch a lot of sports. Some of his favorite things to watch are NASCAR, which is more like nap car for him, football, basketball, baseball and lastly softball. I learned a lot more about Stephen. I see things a lot differently now. I feel like I could tell the whole story about his life without reading the paper. It made me feel like I was a part of him. The lesson that I learned from this was that it is important to hang out with your grandparents. I feel like I know him very differently now. I have learned some good lessons for what not to do. He did some things as a child that I would definitely not do now.
He also gave some good advice. I really enjoyed this project. I learned a lot of what life was like when he was younger and got to see what kind of things he did. His younger life seemed fun because he got to live life without electronics, which I miss being younger and not being on a phone. I am the most lucky granddaughter to live on this planet. To have a grandpa like this is like a wish come true.
To sum up all of this information, do you believe that my grandpa is the best grandpa? He just lived life to the fullest and didn’t have a care in the world. Even though he went through a lot of obstacles, he still just had fun. Although he is becoming older, he takes one day at a time. I just learned so much more about my grandpa. It made me feel closer to him. After all, in my opinion, I think that they should keep the project going. It makes you learn so much more about your family history. I would write another paper in my future if it was like this.

Florissa Family 5K set for June 15 at SVCC

DIXON – The eighth annual Florissa Family 5K will be Saturday, June 15, at Sauk Valley Community College.
The Kids Fun Run will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the start of the 5K Run and Walk at 9 a.m. The course will be accessible for strollers, wheelchairs and people with disabilities.
Registration for the Florissa 5K is $30 before the event and $35 on race day.
There is no cost to kids participating in the Fun Run, but they are asked to
register. Each child will receive a T-shirt (while supplies last) and a medal.
Teams are encouraged to participate. Gather a group of friends, family or coworkers. Details and registration forms are available online at www. raceroster.com or www.florissacenter. org or paper copies are available at Florissa and Kreider Services.
All proceeds from the Florissa 5K are used to help sustain programs and services at Florissa.
Florissa Pediatric Development Center, 144 North Court in Dixon, serves the needs of children from birth
to 18 years old with developmental, behavioral, social and emotional needs.
The goal is not only to raise dollars to support the services at Florissa but to continue educating the community about Florissa and children’s well-being. Money raised from the Florissa 5K stays local.
Last year, more than $112,000 worth of services were provided to children in need of financial assistance.
Boss Carpet One and Borg Warner have stepped forward as the presenting sponsors of the Florissa 5K. There are several sponsorships still available and volunteer opportunities as well.

DIXON – The Reagen Run 5K is held in conjunction with the Petunia Festival in Dixon during the first week of July. The Reagan Run began in 2000 with 315 runners and walkers.
The 24th annual Reagan Run 5K will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 6. The premier 5K racing event starts at the Ron-
ald Reagan Boyhood Home, 816 S. Hennepin Ave., and ends at Haymarket Square, 317 W. Third St. Registration is available online at getmeregistered.com until 1 p.m. July 4. Registration fees are $20 through June 21, $25 from June 22 through July 5 and $35 on race day before 7:30 a.m. at Haymarket Square. Klassens to perform at Spring Valley Church
