WC Honor Flight Committee awards appreciation plaque to Wiersema Charter
Larry Wiersema, owner and operator of Wiersema Charter Service in Morrison, and employees were recipients of a plaque on Friday, July 1, thanking them for their many years of free service to Whiteside County veterans during Honor Flights dedicated to Whiteside County. The Whiteside County Honor Flight Committee, an affiliate of Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, was the donor of the plaque. Chairman Gary Farral made the presentation to Wiersema, with the aid of his wife Jan.
Wiersema passed away on Friday, July 1, at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 8, at Ebenezer Reformed Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 7. See full obituary on page 7.

Donna M. Brooks, age 93, of Morrison, died Sunday, June 26, 2022 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling. Donna was born on January 6, 1929 in Rock Falls, the daughter of Ralph and Beulah (Higley) Barkdoll. She married Marshall Brooks on July 17, 1948 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2008. Donna was the manager of the Wheel Inn Ranch for six years retiring in 1991.
She is survived by her daughter, Marsha (Steve) Geerts of Morrison; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one son, Duane Brooks; two sisters, Joyce Schrader and Janet Waters; and one brother, Keith Barkdoll.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established to Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling.

Arthur L. “Art” Goodwin, 88, of Scales Mound, IL, formerly of Port Byron, IL, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community in Galena.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2022, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Schapville, IL, with Rev. James Mehltretter officiating. Burial will be in the Scales Mound Twp. Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Friday at the Church.
Art was born on April 8, 1934, in Quincy, IL, the son of James H. and Mabel M. (Miller) Goodwin. He was a graduate of Port Byron High School, the class of 1952. Art was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Donna Griffin on March 14, 1953, at Peace Lutheran Church in Port Byron. To this union, four wonderful children were born.
Art formerly farmed, enjoyed collecting farm toys, fishing, cooking and designing quilts dealing with farming.
Surviving is his wife, Donna; three children, Rick (Pam) Goodwin of Port Byron, IL, Randy (Teri) Goodwin and Karen (John) Hesselbacher both of Scales Mound; nine grandchildren, Traci (Chad), Phillip, Cassie (Neil), Trish, Nathan (Laura), Mark (Kim), Sarah (Brent), Kyle (Brittany) and Jacob (Chelsea); 15 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mabel, a daughter and son-inlaw, Pam (Brad) Smith, and siblings, Junior Goodwin, James (Barbara) Goodwin and Doris (Bill) West.
Art’s family request that visitors dress casual, and a luncheon will be held at Goodwin’s Pond following the burial.
Donna and family wish to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque and the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community, especially Kayla for the wonderful care provided to their husband and father.

Alyce L. Cook, 92, of Morrison, IL, died Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Rock River Hospice. Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, July 3, at 3312 West Rock Falls Road, Rock Falls, IL 61071 (Triple P BBQ Banquet Room).
Alyce Ebbesen was born December 17, 1929, in DeKalb, IL to Maynard E. and Kathryn L. (Concidine) Ebbesen. She lived with her mother in many Illinois communities and her grandparents, James Wesley and Mary (Lyons) Concidine in DeKalb, IL, and was a graduate of DeKalb High School. Alyce earned her teaching certificate from Northern Illinois State Teachers College. She was the first lay teacher at DeKalb St. Mary’s school in 195051, and taught the first kindergarten class in Earlville in 1951-52.
On May 31, 1952, she married Charles E. Cook of Somonauk in DeKalb, IL. Together they raised their family of nine children and farmed in DeKalb, Rock Falls, and Morrison, IL. In 1980, she returned to her career in early childhood education, earning her Associate’s Degree in 1987 from Sauk Valley Community College. She served as a nursery school and Head Start teacher in Morrison, Sterling, Rock Falls, and Lyndon, IL, from 1980 to 1993.
Alyce overcame many hardships in her childhood, which fueled her devotion to her 68 years of marriage with her beloved Charles, to raising her nine children, and to educating and caring for young children. Alyce was known by all as a model of compassion and faith. There was always room in her heart and at her table for one more person. She cheered on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at more ball games, concerts, recitals, 4-H shows, graduations, and other life events than could be counted. Even at 92, she kept up with her family and friends on Facebook, sharing kindness, encouragement, and good humor. She had a gift for making people feel loved and cared for in small, everyday ways.
Survivors include nine children, David (Carol) Cook, Clifford Cook, Louise (Steve) Poulter, John (Joyce) Cook, all of Morrison; Tom (Mary Pat) Cook of Fort Atkinson, WI, Kent (Clair) Cook of East Peoria, IL, Laura (Scott) Miller of Sterling, IL, Joel (Shawn) Cook of Como, IL, and Margaret (Mary Shelden) Cook of Lake in the Hills, IL; twenty-one grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren, and her half-sister Faith Cook of DeKalb, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, James and Joe Ebbesen.

Kim was born October 20, 1958, in Beloit, WI to Larry and Patricia (Culver) Neblock and was raised by her aunt and uncle Joseph and Alta Denman. She was educated in the Beloit grade schools and attended Beloit High School. She married Harold J. Schroth on August 6, 1977 in Morrison. Kim enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom which allowed her to help many people with various tasks like filling prescriptions, medical assistance, filing taxes, etc. She loved to donate her time to help others. Kim was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church in Morrison. She also helped with the Morrison Girl Scouts and assisted in setting up the Brownie group in Round Grove. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crafts. She also enjoyed baking and taught her daughters to bake so they could take over the baking duties. She always baked Christmas cookies to give to the mailman and anyone who came to visit. She loved to travel, especially to South Dakota, where she could sit and watch buffalo for hours. Above all, Kim enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Harold; three daughters, Michelle (Robert) Castaneda of Morrison, Heather (Jesse) Eich of Preston, IA and Alexis (Austin) Handel of Morrison; three grandchildren, Soren Castaneda, Leo and Theo Handel; father, Larry (Donna) Neblock, Sr. of South Beloit, IL; one sister, Robin (Monty Bebee) Keeler of Beloit, WI; one brother, Larry Neblock Jr. of Janesville, WI; one aunt, Barbara (Armando) Arenas-Gutierrez of Elgin and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Neblock; her beloved aunt & uncle, Joseph & Alta; father and mother-in-law, Harold L. and Vivian Schroth; half-sister, Lolly; one brother, Dennis (Lynette) Denman.

Matt Stanley Russell, 58, of Erie, Illinois passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at home. Visitation will be Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the Erie Christian Church, Erie, Illinois. Services will be Friday July 1, 2022 at 10 A.M. at the Church. Matt was born August 6, 1963 in Morrison, IL, the son of David and Sylvia (Sanders) Russell. He graduated from Erie High School in 1981. He was a life member of the Erie Christian Church. He worked 19 years for Chuck’s Outboard Motors and Marine as a Marine Mechanic and 22 years for Vermeer Midwest as an Industrial Machine Mechanic. Matt volunteered his time in many different ways but among his favorite was being an MC along his twin brother Marty for many charity benefits and the Illinois Great River Tug. Matt spent much of his younger years on the Mississippi River boating and camping at Princeton Beach. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan and could always be found on game day with his old school headset listening to the games so that he didn’t have to listen to Joe Buck on the TV. Matt was a “Parrothead” and loved attending Jimmy Buffett concerts with his friends and family. For several years Matt hosted a music festival in his pasture called Russellstock. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and loved to make people laugh. Most importantly, Matt was a kind and caring family member and friend. You could always count on him to reach out in a time of need or just to tell you he loved you. In recent years, Matt found his way back to the Lord and we find peace knowing he is in the arms of Jesus.

A memorial to Emmanuel Reformed Church has been established. Linda was born January 27, 1944 in Morrison, IL, to Raymond W. and Kathryn (Zeeryp) Bielema. She was educated in the Union Grove Grade School and was a graduate of Morrison High School. On April 29, 1966 she married Arnold J. Damhoff in Fulton, IL. Following high school, Linda was first employed by Dr. Gronner’s Dentist office in Morrison. She then worked alongside her husband at A & D Electric, as a bookkeeper. She had also worked as Northside Grade School as a lunchroom assistant. She was a previous member of Spring Valley Reformed Church in Fulton, and is a current member of Emmanuel Reformed Church, where she sang in the church choirs and was a member of Emmanuel’s Church Cantata. Linda enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and furniture refinishing. Survivors include her husband, Arnie; one son, Ryan (Theresa) Damhoff of Sycamore, IL; three sisters, Norma (Dean) Boehde of Clinton, IA, Debra (Larry) Tervelt of Loves Park, IL and Bonnie (John) Bauscher of Morrison, IL; three brothers, Ronald (Cheryl) Bielema of Canton, IL, Joe (Cindy) Bielema of Morrison, IL and John (Charlene) Bielema of Morrison, IL; one sister-in-law, Kathy Bielema of Fulton, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Terry Bielema.

He was educated in the Nelson, IL grade schools and was a 1968 graduate of Rock Falls High School. Larry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He married Janice Louise Forth on October 26, 1974, in Morrison. He drove a feed truck for Wayne Feeds in Rock Falls while in high school and worked at the L and M Service Station in Morrison. He then owned and operated Wiersema Charter Service in Morrison. He was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison and the Morrison American Legion Post #328. Larry’s greatest joy in life was driving bus and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Jan; two sons, Eric (Lisa) Wiersema of Morrison and Gregg (Jackie) Wiersema of Chadwick, IL; four grandchildren, Hailey and Matthew Wiersema, Alicen and Cooper Wiersema; three sisters.
