Building Lasting Impressions that Never Die

Well, it’s back.

Stretched from the bane of many children to the joy of many parents, the new school year is here, and with that comes the first-day jitters, tears and uncertainty – and not just from the teachers.

All these years later, I still feel a kind of anxiety as the middle of August approaches. Back then, Little League was long over for me and my next major life event consisted

of early rising, homework and not riding bikes.

However, people who know me now are probably champing at the bit for me to get my butt back into a more consistent work routine. The summer schedule is often weekend festivals, weather phenomena and how many football camps we can cram into a month. This leads to down time that can be angsty because there’s no rest for the weary, and pages need to be filled and stories told.

I recently covered the student leaders involved in this program as they volunteered in downtown Sterling. They were recommended to be part of B.L.I.N.D. by staff and administrators.

The program is meant to help students bridge gaps, foster trust and embrace their role as thoughtful, caring leaders in their schools.

I’ve covered more than a few of their events over the years and it’s definitely a program that every high school student should strive for.

Hike the Hennepin outing on Aug. 20

The Friends of the Canal are holding their monthly Hike the Canal outing on Sunday, Aug. 20. This month’s hike will be from Bridge 59 to Bridge 56. The hike is 3.8 miles in length and has been named the “Red Tailed Hawk.” Hikers will meet at Bridge 56 (Illinois Route 92) at 1:30 p.m. and will be shuttled to the trail.

The monthly hikes were developed by the Friends of the Hennepin Canal as an opportunity for everyone to get to know the Canal personally by hiking it from the Illinois River to the Mississippi (including the Feeder Canal) in small legs. You need not be a member of the Friends to join in any of the hikes, and there is no fee. Come join in the fun, bring a friend and dress weather appropriately.

Rock River Fabrication. The contribution is much appreciated as the cost to give assistance to area families has been increasing. If anyone has extra produce from their gardens, it can be dropped off at the food pantry between 8 and 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. Beginning Sept. 1, pantry hours will change to 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

A Water Fight Tournament will be held at the Hooppole Fire Department, 1101 Merchant St., on Saturday, Aug. 26. Sign-up will be at noon the day of the tournament with a 1 p.m. start time. There will be a ground water fight and a kids water fight.

There will be fun for the entire family. Please bring your own beverage.

One of the last of his kind in the Midwest

Morrison cattle catcher helps Maple Park family’s lost calves return home

MORRISON – It’s not often that you see a cowboy rounding up cattle on the farms of northern Illinois.

But in July, a cattle catcher did just that, rescuing six escaped calves from a western Kane County farm and ending a weeklong hunt.

Half a dozen 6-month-old calves escaped their home at the Burgin family farm on Route 38 in Maple Park during a storm the weekend before the Fourth of July. Just more than a week later, all six calves were home safe, thanks to Wesley Bush.

Bush is a professional cattle catcher from Morrison who rescues escaped cattle from Minnesota to Tennessee, mainly operating in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

The Burgins have been living at their farm home for 23 years and they keep about 25 cows, 300 chickens, 30 ducks and one pet pig. They sell their products at the little shop in front of their home and at the Batavia farmers market.

When Marcia Burgin and her husband, Bob, realized their calves were missing Sunday, July 2, she said their family and friends scrambled into action. On the first day, they had 10 people searching, including their son and daughter in-law, Tyler and Marissa Burgin, and several friends and neighbors.

The search party wandered and hiked the area in the rain for hours and managed to corral two of the six calves on the first day. The other four evaded them and took off in different directions, beginning a weeklong hunt.

On Monday morning, July 3, the Burgins found fresh tracks in the abandoned farm across Route 38 from their home, but didn’t find the calves.

“We were starting to get concerned because nobody had sighted them,” Marcia Burgin said. “It’s not quite as bad as losing your children, but it’s kind of like that.”

After failing to find the calves Wednesday, July 5, the Burgins decided to call Bush, who showed up at 4 a.m. Friday, July 7, with his team of dogs and two horses.

“He’s very intense, very focused. He’s like a hound dog on a scent. He really is,” Marcia Burgin said. “He isn’t messing around. He’s doing his job.”

After coming up empty-handed after a search in Elburn, Bush was

fairly certain the cattle had traveled south and advised the Burgins to again canvass in that direction.

Six days after the calves escaped, the Burgins got a call that someone driving on Interstate 88 had spotted them. Bush showed up at 11:30 p.m. and began corralling the four calves after finding them in a bean field near Watson Road north of I-88.

Bush was unable to lead the calves by hand, so he roped two and pulled them into his trailer while on horseback. Burgin said the cows fought him the whole way into the trailer.

“It was fascinating to see him work with his animals,” Burgin said. “They were a team. It was just amazing.”

After tracking the last two runaways for almost a mile through fields toward Dauberman Road, Bush and his dogs lost their trail and returned about 2:30 a.m. July 9. He told the Burgins to call him as soon as they were sighted again.

On the evening of July 10, the Burgins got a call from nearby farmer Dave Nelson, who reported the cows in a hay field off Dauberman Road. She said Bush showed up about 11 p.m. and had the calves roped and in the trailer in about an hour and a half, though it was quite a task.

Bush loaded his dogs in his truck and went back to get a calf and led it into the trailer. The last calf suffered a minor wound to one ear during the process and Bush treated it with anti-septic spray before bringing it in and checking over his horses.

“I was impressed that he took care of his animals before he even dumped out his own boots,” Burgin said. “That’s the kind of character this man is. He’s just a really amazing man and very caring of the animals. He is not some guy in a Stetson hat. He is the real cowboy.”

Burgin said she would have called Bush immediately if she had known that cattle catchers existed and she now has him on speed dial should they ever lose cattle again.

“We didn’t even know they existed, that there was such a person,” Burgin said. “Now, he’s my first phone call. From start to finish, he was absolutely amazing and you couldn’t find a nicer personality.”

While cowboys and cattle wranglers are prevalent in the South, Bush said he is one of the last of his kind in the Midwest.

Bush grew up with horses and cattle and was eager to get into rodeo. He has been roping since he was a freshman in high school where he competed in team roping. As a senior, he won the Illinois state championship and placed 11th in the nation, earning him a college roping scholarship.

He started roping professionally as a cattle catcher about 10 years ago with 2B Wild Cattle Catching Services, which he eventually bought and now owns. He said as far as he knows he is the only full-time cattle catcher in Illinois.

Bush said being one of the only cattle catchers in the area, he is kept fairly busy, working about three to eight jobs a week.

“I’ve seen cattle get so smart that they will open the gate themselves,” Bush said. “They’ll use their tongue to undo latches and chains and such.”

Diana was an active member of her home church in Morrison, in churches as they moved around the country while in the Navy and throughout her life. She also served faithfully with her husband at Youth Camp Highview Acres in Bellbrook, Ohio; Camp Manitoumi, Low Point Illinois and

2012 graduate of Prophetstown High School. On August 7, 2015 he married Desiree Blazek in Morrison, IL; together they had three beautiful children. Johnathon dedicated his life to the United States military, serving in the U. S. Army from November of 2016 to the present. He was a music lover and played the drums. He enjoyed football and coached a flag football team that had a nearly undefeated season. Johnathon was a HUGE Green Bay Packers fan, and also a Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed going to the drag strip in Cordova. Diana, as a young person collected post cards, was an avid reader, an excellent proofreader and a fast typist. She also did childcare in several places she lived. Janet Louise Verhaeghe was born June 7, 1953, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Bob and Joyce Moore Verhaeghe. She married John E. Versypt on April 11, 1975, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, East Moline. John passed away on October 8, 2009.

Jan was always caring for others, whether that was in her job as librarian at St. Mary’s School or as a dental assistant for an oral surgeon. After having children, she devoted herself to taking care of them along with lovingly caring for dozens of other children in

She died May 8, 2018. Robert joined the United States Air Force and made a 19½ year career out of serving his

Watertown and Maralynn Crouse and Joe of Leonardtown, Maryland. She is further survived by twelve grandchildren and many relatives and Friends.

Diana is preceded in death by her parents Clifford and Catherine Dean, Uncle LaVern Dean, a step-mother Christine Dean, a son Michael Carl and other relatives.

She enjoyed collecting Longaberger baskets, visiting casinos, and crafting, especially alongside her high school friends, the “BESTIES”. She loved traveling with her husband in their motor home and continued to travel with her family in recent years enjoying trips to Niagara Falls, Las Vegas, and the Oregon Coast, adding to the 46 states she had already visited with John.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cordova, serving many years in the Children’s Ministry. She lived in Cordova for 45 years before moving back to her hometown of East Moline in 2019.

Morrison Historical Society to host Gen. Ulysses Grant

The Morrison Historical Society will host Bob Buman as Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on Sunday, Aug. 27, at the Odell Public Library’s Community Room, 307 S. Madison St. in Morrison. Doors open at 1 p.m., and the general’s talk will begin promptly at 1:30. There is no fee to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Buman’s first-person interpretation will cover Grant’s life from birth to death. He will include:

• 19th-century American history in the Galena area

• Grant’s role in the Civil War

• Grant’s prestigious final military rank

• Life as the18th president

A question and answer session will conclude the program.

This enlightening presentation by one of the Galena generals will appeal to the general public, adults, teachers and history students.

Morrison Tech Innovation Center to expand

Morrison Tech is proud to announce the expansion of the Morrison Tech Innovation Center on campus. This addition will serve both students and the community by creating more space for technology exploration and active learning, attributes the college is best known for. The new construction will consist of a large new lab space connected to the current Innovation Center via a new enclosed walkway and a separate building that will be known as a “hot shop.” Combined, these additions will add another 6,000 square feet onto the facility.

An enclosed courtyard will be developed behind the extension, which will create an inviting outdoor space to host demonstrations and special events.

The new expansion has been in the design and planning stages for the past several years. The annex will assist with housing additional equipment that is needed to complete the college’s newest program under the Engineering Technology curric-

ulum: Automation and Intelligent Controls Processes. The facility will house a 5,000-square-foot industrial/lab space, a 550-square-foot enclosed walkway that will hold study spaces and a separate 700-square-foot building that will accommodate welding, casting and forging equipment.

Currently, the college is using its Virtual Reality Lab to model the building and make adjustments accordingly. The VR space allows the design team to immersively experience the design complete with fixtures, furnishings and equipment. In the virtual environment, designers walk freely between and within the buildings to gauge distance, height and space. The college is partnering with Wick Buildings for this new development.

The project is primarily funded through a $1.5 million grant spearheaded by former Congresswoman Cherie Bustos and supported by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

In September 2022, Bustos visited the campus to present the check for the project.

Prosecutors fight P-town anti-abortionist’s no contest plea

URBANA – Federal prosecutors are fighting an elderly Prophetstown anti-abortion activist’s request to plead no contest to allegations he tried to burn down a Danville clinic where abortions will be performed.

Philip J. Buyno, 73, faces five to 20 years in prison if convicted of attempted arson for the May 20 incident. The federal system does not allow for parole.

Buyno was indicted June 6 and his appointed attorney, Sharbel A. Rantisi of Peoria, filed a petition July 25 asking U.S. Central District Court Judge Colin Stirling Bruce to allow him to plead nolo contendere, or no contest.

That means he would accept a conviction without admitting his guilt.

He is asking to do so because of his “religious beliefs,” court records show.

Nolo contendere is a tactic rarely employed or accepted, U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Harris and Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugene L. Miller said in their response to the petition, which they oppose.

dere allow only for the entry of a judgment of conviction in that case and cannot be used against the defendant in subsequent litigation,” they wrote in their response.

The Department of Justice itself is no fan of the plea, which can be made without requiring any proof of the underlying facts of the crime.

It requires its attorneys to oppose the plea unless they conclude that “the circumstances of the case are so unusual that acceptance of such a plea would be in the public interest.”

“The reason is that, except in the most unusual circumstances, the United States is unwilling to condone the entry of a special plea that may help the defendant avoid legitimate consequences of his guilt,” the prosecutors said.

In this case, there are three factors the court must consider when deciding whether to allow him a nolo contendere plea: If Buyno can show there were mitigating factors in his commission of the crime; if such a plea would avoid an expensive and time-consuming trial; and if the plea will act as a sufficient deterrent to future crimes.

“His motivation for wanting to enter a plea of nolo contendere has to do with his religious beliefs, as those beliefs are completely opposed to the expected purpose and use of the building into which he crashed and planned on burning down,” Rantisi said in Buyno’s petition.

That’s not a sufficient argument, prosecutors said.

“It is not apparent, nor does the defendant articulate, how pleading guilty versus nolo contendere to attempted arson will do violence to his religious beliefs,” Miller and Harris wrote.

Buyno also cites the cost savings, but the trial, set for Sept. 12, is expected to last only a day or two, and pleading guilty would result in the same savings, the prosecutors said.

Their main concern, however, is that a plea of no contest “will not have the same deterrent effect as a guilty plea or conviction at trial.

“Allowing the defendant here to avoid responsibility for his conduct ... as well as legitimate consequences of his guilt, will signal to the public that this crime is somehow less serious and less deserving of prosecution than the typical attempted arson,” prosecutors said.

plea, but also, “accepting a plea of nolo contendere in this case, which has received media attention, may erode the public’s confidence in the fairness of our system of justice,” prosecutors said.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Buyno told investigators he was a member of an anti-abortion “rescue group” that prevents abortion clinics from being established.

About 4:30 a.m. May 20, according to the record, he intentionally backed his car into the entrance of the Danville building, which was being remodeled into a reproductive health clinic. Interstate commerce would be conducted there because of its proximity to the Illinois-Indiana border, hence the federal charge.

The car was filled with containers of gasoline, wood and old tires Buyno planned to use to burn down the building, prosecutors alleged.

His effort, which was caught on video surveillance cameras, failed when his car doors became jammed shut by the debris, and he couldn’t get out or reach a container of gasoline he had thrown out the window, he told investigators.

Buyno also told them that “if I could sneak in with a gas can and a match, I’d go there again,” and that if he was released from jail, he’ll go back and finish the job, the affidavit said.

Buyno is in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service while his case proceeds. A hearing is set for Aug. 28.

RCFPD Fire

Volunteers with the Rapids City Fire Protection District responded to 29 calls for assistance in July. A breakdown of those calls is as follows:

Village of Port Byron – Ten EMS calls, one tree fire and one CO alarm.

Fire Protection District (Rural) – Nine EMS calls, one fire alarm and one downed power line. Automatic aid was given to Hillsdale Fire Protection District for one barbecue grill fire, one hay bale fire, two brush fires and one traffic accident. Mutual aid was given to East Moline for one vehicle fire.

Funslinger Fun Run planned for Sept. 9

Morrison Department of Fun is planning its next big event – a Funslinger Run for UTVs and ATVs on Saturday, Sept. 9. All ages are welcome for the adventurous ride across Whiteside County.

The unique and thrilling event combines adventure, agriculture and socializing into one unforgettable experience. Rev up those engines and get ready for an epic adventure and UTV/ATV crop tour and crawl. Riders will travel to Fulton, Erie, Prophetstown and Lyndon before making their way back to Morrison. There will be designated stops at bars and restaurants along the way. Registration will start at 8 a.m. at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds in Morrison, with breakfast options available for purchase. The fun run cost is $30 per vehicle and $5 per participant. The ride starts at 9 a.m. going toward Fulton, with late registration and lunch at Kingpins in Fulton at 11:30 a.m.

Morrison Community Hospital - Erie Clinic opens

The Erie community is celebrating after their only health care clinic officially has opened under new ownership after fears it would be closed.

Morrison Community Hospital acquired the facility in May and held a ribbon-cutting Friday, Aug. 11. Nurse Practitioner Ruth Fiedler-Eaton provides patient care at Erie’s only health care facility at 530 12th St.

In March, Genesis Health Group announced the Erie Family Clinic would close June 16 because of “escalating costs and staff shortages that have caused unprecedented financial pressures.” After that announcement, citizens and patients held rallies and contacted key stakeholders.

Morrison Community Hospital CEO Pam Pfister delivered remarks before the ribbon-cutting, saying she received multiple calls and heard many citizens’ concerns in the spring about the clinic’s closure. Though she had never met Fiedler-Eaton, she knew she was the right fit when the two met in May. “She just wants to take care of her patients and she exemplifies her care with pure intentions,” she told the crowd.

The next steps were to get paperwork together, perform a cost analysis and meet with the MCH Board of Directors, Pfister said. They had two questions – is this a good fit for our hospital

and does it meet our mission? They agreed the facility complements the services they provide and will extend their services to a valued community.

Pfister said access to health care is one of the biggest concerns for hospital administrators.

“We understand what this clinic means to your community and the economic impact as well,” Pfister said. “It really says a great deal to this community that Ruth has been providing care here for 25 years, working independently in a rural community, and has done a tremendous job. We look forward to the continued success

of this clinic.”

Pfister thanked the board of directors for their time at many special meetings, her medical staff leadership team, her support team and Ruth and her support staff for “embracing the changes” and becoming part of the hospital’s family.

Fiedler-Eaton sees patients from three counties and many were concerned about having to travel further for health care.

On Friday, she was all smiles as she welcomed back patients, friends and citizens to the Morrison Community Hospital – Erie Clinic.

Cordova and Albany to combine emergency services

A proposed arrangement between Cordova and Albany for ambulance services will bring changes to emergency medical services in upper Rock Island and lower Whiteside counties. In a letter sent to Cordova residents last week, the Cordova Fire Protection District announced it will be “embarking on a venture with Albany Fire Protection District to bring better ambulance service to our communities.”

“Albany and Cordova will work together to combine the two districts’ ambulance needs so that they may continue to each provide superior ambulance service to our residents,” the letter stated. “Rest assured, during the transition an ambulance service will be available to all, overall call times will not increase and paramedics and EMTs will be available 24/7. Our No. 1 responsibility is the health and

well-being of our community.”

The letter assures residents that Cordova and Albany trustees, EMTs, paramedics and firefighters are exploring a “number of exciting” endeavors but that the process will take time. The two districts are looking at a long-term plan and a feasibility study with an outside source.

They’ve discussed building a satellite facility on land along Illinois 84 about two miles north of the city limits and have been consulting with legal services for the changes.

Albany Fire Protection District hosted an informational meeting on the planned partnership on Monday, July 31, where residents were updated on the process, timeline and plans. EMS coordinator and assistant chief Brooke Posateri assured residents that “we’re all better and stronger together,” while noting the arrangement will benefit both communities in a time when rural emergency medical services are struggling with manpower and resources.

Albany has its own ambulance service, which includes seven EMTS, one advanced life support ambulance (ALS), one basic life support (BLS) ambulance and one BLS non-transport pickup truck. Cordova has a BLS non-transport ambulance as well as new rescue equipment. Albany has 22 volunteer firefighters on their roster and 59 square miles to cover. Both districts will maintain their mutual aid agreements with surrounding communities.

The changes in Cordova come after the Genesis Health Group contract for ambulance services expired at the end of June and was put out for bid, with Cordova choosing not to sign the proposed new three-year contract. During the transition, Genesis extended its original contract with Hillsdale and Rapids City/Port Byron until November.

Representatives from Hillsdale and Port Byron/Rapids City Fire Protection District are worried

about the changes and how they will impact taxpayers moving forward. The Genesis ambulance contract is based on the Equalized Assessed Valuation (EAV), and Cordova’s withdrawal leaves the two districts responsible for the contract’s costs.

Cordova asserts that despite having only 15% of calls through Genesis, they paid the highest rate of $2,200 per call. They’ve had 39 medical calls this year, with an average of five per month or 70 annually. With Constellation and 3M as part of their tax base, they paid the largest share of the contract. Hillsdale’s average cost for the annual contract is 12%, Rapids City is 31% and Cordova was 58%.

Rapids City and Hillsdale Fire Protection Districts are waiting on a new contract proposal from Genesis that will be based on two districts instead of three, while Cordova and Albany are moving forward with their partnership on a three-month trial period.

Trigger finger is discussed

Trigger finger is the common name for the condition medically known as stenosing tenosynovitis. In this situation, the finger refers to the catching process like a trigger on a gun. Any finger may be involved but most commonly it is the ring finger and thumb. The condition will sometimes come and go without any particular intervention. Most people who have the condition do not necessarily seek treatment because they learn to deal with this. Sometimes there is an association with diabetes. The condition may be painful. Other times it is merely a nuisance or it is a mere passing curiosity.

When treatment is determined to be potentially helpful, measures include a steroid or cortisone type of injection or surgery. The cortisone type of injection is generally limited to about three times after interval periods. This is due to the possibility of the steroid rupturing in the tendon. At times surgery may be necessary. The surgery is quite simple and is usually done under local anesthesia.

Giesler accepted the position of head coach at Clinton High. Proud is far from new to the Fulton football scene. He has been an assistant coach for several years.

The critical financial situation of the River Bend School District continued to command the attention of members of the Board of Education at a meeting pushing the employment of a new principal for the high school and other important matters into secondary positions. The board adopted a formal resolution calling for a referendum vote on a tax increase of 60 cents at the Nov. 8 election.

Interstate 88 bridge repairs underway in Rock Island County

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced, weather permitting, construction has begun on Interstate 88 in Rock Island County.

The work zone is between Old Illinois 2 and the Rock Island-Whiteside County line.

Work will repair and install overlays at bridges located at Zuma Creek east of the Old Illinois 2 interchange, Canoe Creek southwest of the Hillsdale-Port Byron interchange and Meredosia Ditch at the Rock Island-Whiteside County line.

Traffic in these areas will be open in one lane in each direction in each work zone.

The $3.9 million project is expected to be completed by the end of November.

C.U.S.D #2 is taking bids for snow removal for the 2023-2024 school year. The bid should include price to plow River Bend Middle School parking lot (415 12th Street), Fulton Elementary School parking lot (1301 7th Avenue), the north and south parking lots at Fulton High School (1207 12th Street), and the Bus Garage parking lots (1307 14th Street & 1301 13th Street) is required by 6:00 A.M. Include 12th Avenue from 12th Street to 13th Street, 13th Avenue from 12th Street to 13th Street, and 13th Street between the parking lots south of Fulton High School and the Bus Garage. Proof of insurance is required. No sidewalks should be included in the bid Plow if there is an inch or more of snow. Questions should be directed to Taylor Whitney at 815-589-2902.
