MORRISON A 27-year-old accused of a 2019 attempted murder and a 2020 assault on a Whiteside County jail offi cer now has a third felony case filed against him, this one accusing him of punching a jail worker.
Jeramie M. House, whose attempted murder trial is set to begin Oct. 31, was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated battery. Investigators said he punched a jail worker in the head or face, knocking him to the ground.
The charge carries three to seven years in prison.
Bond was set at $100,000.
House was charged May 2, 2020, with one count of aggravated battery. In that case, which is ongoing, he is accused of throwing “a liquid sub stance” at another jail worker. Bond in that case is $25,000.
He has a pretrial hearing the same day his trial is set to begin.
In the overriding case, House is in Whiteside County jail on $500,000 bond, accused of shooting a then-18-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman on Oct. 22, 2019, in Morrison.
Additionally, charges were filed Oct. 7 in Whiteside County Court against Jodie M. Knight, 21, a Chadwick native now of Clinton, Iowa, and Courtney J. Queckborner, 22, of Milledgeville House and the two women, who

All require that 85% of the sen tences be served.
House also is charged with posses sion of a gun while his FOID card was revoked, which carries a punishment of two years to five years.
As of Wednesday, both Knight and Queckborner were free on a $100,000 recognizance bond. They had a preliminary hearing Monday.

Prescribed fire at Andresen Nature Center prairie
By SARAH FORD For Shaw Media
The fall prescribed burn season has arrived, and with it a window of oppor tunity to set ablaze a small patch of prairie in Fulton on Saturday. Several members of Natural Area Guardians of Whiteside County welcomed the opportunity to help with a prescribed burn at the Andresen Nature Center prairie.
The prairie measures around 9,000 square feet and is seven years in the making, with volunteers working to expand it every year. From goldenrod to Indian grass to milkweed to asters, the native species are a source of food for insects and birds and provide an overall haven for wildlife.
Kyle Kopf, director of Andresen Nature Center, said Saturday’s pre scribed fire was relatively small at about 2,500 square feet.
Kopf aims for a burn at the Fulton prairie each year, but only a third at a time so as not to kill all the insects.
Fire recycles nutrients back into the soil, controls invasive plants, helps germinate seeds and reinvigorates the prairie plants.
Volunteers cut down vegetation to create a burn line that was wetted
down to keep the flames within the desired area. A drip torch was used to
light the brush, and a fire blanket and watering equipment helped keep ever green shrubs safe from the flames. On occasion, flames shot up and smoke saturated the air.
Freshmen and Sauk Valley Impact volunteers Liam Robbins of Albany aided with the drip torch and Ryan Peppers of Morrison was on standby with a water pack and hose. Both young men have devoted many of their volunteer hours to the nature center and NAGS. “It’s the kids who are allowed to destroy a little of nature who will become the adults who will want to protect it,” Kopf said.
Though the wind was gusting on occasion, Kopf said 6 to 15 mph winds are ideal on burn days to help with control. He called it an excellent burn since there was no rain over the past week, low humidity and an up-to-date wind direction and speed forecast.
“It did what it’s supposed to do,” he said of the fire.
The prairie is located at 409 N. Fourth St., Fulton. NAGS will be doing other prescribed burns in Whiteside County this fall. To learn more about the organization or to get involved, visit whitesidecountyswcd.com.

Diverticular disease is commonly related to our diets
By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D.
Diverticula are pouch-like areas that balloon out from the colon or large intes tine, usually occurring on the left side in the descending portion of the bowel The diverticula appear in areas in which the wall of the colon is weakened by the entrance of blood vessels. This weakness is often present in many middle-aged Americans. In fact, by age 40, half of the people may have begun to form these diverticula. In people over age 80, as many as 90% may have these Diverticu losis is the presence of these pouches
There is strong evidence that diet plays a role in diverticula. Diverticular disease is largely unknown in countries where the standard diet provides a lot of natural fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain products and little fat. Once

Matching funds campaign held for SVCC’s Animal Science lab
The matching funds campaign hosted by the Lee and Whiteside County Farm Bureau Foundations concluded Aug. 31. Through the generosity of the foundations and the community, $20,000 was
the walls have weakened, there is no way of returning the intestine to its original condition. The keys to avoiding diverticular disease is to start early in life, eating plenty of fiber and watching the fats, sugar and salt. Your doctor may provide a list of high fiber foods. Plenty of liquids also are advisable water being the best. Having regular bowel movements is felt to be helpful. Heavy laxative use, how ever, is discouraged. Your doctor may be able to give you medications that will help your bowels work smoother.
Diverticulitis means an inflammation or infection of these pouches. This may occur when the necks of the diverticula become swollen from infection or injury from a passing bowel movement or from trapping material inside and not moving it through the colon fast enough.
Signs and symptoms of diverticulitis
include pain, often in the lower left por tion of the abdomen, nausea, fever and swelling of the abdomen, and diarrhea or constipation may be present. Occasion ally blood is seen in the bowel move ment.
Diagnosis often is made by the history of your illness as well as physical findings. Blood counts may be helpful. Occasionally an X-ray examination of the colon is performed, though, sometimes a delay is made until after the inflamma tion has calmed down.
During the acute phase of an illness, clear liquids are used. Your doctor may then advance your diet through stages, and you should follow those directions carefully and report any flareups in pain, increase in temperature, passage of blood in bowel movements, more swell ing of the abdomen, vomiting or other
changes in your condition It is import ant that a laxative not be taken. Often times, physicians advise that seedy prod ucts be avoided during an acute infection of diverticulitis, however, this is no lon ger felt essential. Hospitalization is sometimes necessary for diverticulitis and occasionally surgery may become necessary Your doctor also may want to do an exam with an instrument to look in the colon (sigmoidoscopy).
Recent updates suggest holding anti biotics for mild cases
In summary, diverticular disease is largely related to the types of diets we have. Diverticula can be prevented to some degree with high-fiber foods. Once diverticula are present, infection, bleed ing and other problems may occur. For such problems, you should notify your doctor immediately
raised for SVCC’s Ag Animal Science lab.
The goal of the campaign was to expand the SVCC Animal Science labs to greatly enhance the hands-on learning opportunities for students. Through the lab, students will be able to perform anatomy and physiology activities as
they relate to animal reproduction, nutrition and digestion and physical movements.
Beyond the benefits to the animal science classes, customized training will be available with portable lab kits. Collaboration for training sessions will be avail-
able to county farm bureaus, area vet clinics, county 4-H groups and others in need of training.

How has B.L.I.N.D. impacted your life?
B.L.I.N.D. has impacted me in so many ways that it’s hard to keep track. B.L.I.N.D. has helped me become more confident in myself and to become a better leader for our school, along with others It’s helped guide me to a better future!
What advice would you give to freshmen that would encourage them to pursue becoming a B.L.I.N.D. leader?
I would tell them that you may not think B.L.I.N.D. impacts you in your life, but it really does. You meet your closest friends through B.L.I.N.D., even if you don’t think so. It gets you out of your shell and helps you express yourself in ways that maybe you didn’t think was possible. Become a B.L.I.N.D. leader. It’s worth every moment.
If there was something you could do to change the world, what would it be?
I would love to be able to change all of the violence that occurs everywhere. Not only that, but I would love for us to
