Online safety tips offered as holiday shopping arrives SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding Illinois taxpayers to remain watchful against potential online threats when conducting holiday shopping this year. “IDOR, members of the Internal Revenue Service and other state tax administrators all work together to safeguard taxpayers year-round,” IDOR Director David Harris said. “Whether shopping online or browsing social media sites,
people can put their personal information at risk to criminals.” Below are some safety tips to help protect against these attacks: • Protect personal information. Refrain from revealing too much personal information online. Birth dates, addresses, age and financial information such as bank accounts and Social Security numbers are among things that should not be shared freely. • Use strong passwords . Consider using a password manager to store passwords.
• Enable multi-factor authentication. Use this for extra security for online accounts. • Update computer and phone software. Enable automatic updates to install critical security updates. • Use security software. Security software such as an anti-virus or firewall provides added protection. • Use a VPN. Criminals can intercept personal information on insecure public Wi-Fi networks. Individuals are encouraged to always use a virtual private network when connecting to public Wi-Fi.
• Be cautious with email deals. Email marketing still is one of the main avenues that businesses use to promote deals and products. It’s also one of the main avenues that threat actors use to hack into your system. • Use a credit instead of a debit card when possible. Credit cards offer an extra layer of protection when you’re shopping online. Unlike debit cards that are directly linked to your bank account, credit cards usually offer greater protection in case your account is compromised.

6 GLIMPSES OF THE PAST – FULTON
1963: Fulton joins nation in mourning President Kennedy 60 Years
Nov. 27, 1963
Fulton businessman Raymond Weisbach was in Dallas last Friday and saw President John F. Kennedy only a few minutes before he was shot and killed by a sniper’s bullets. Weisbach, director of Kemper Sales for the Fidelity Life Association, had been in Dallas attending to business. He and a friend were at Love Field, the airport where Kennedy’s plane landed and stood only a few feet from the president. Fulton joined the nation and the world in an official day of mourning for President Kennedy. Mayor Warren Wiersema proclaimed Monday as an official day of mourning And businesses were closed until 1 p.m.

C.R. Leininger, superintendent of River Bend schools, has been elected president of the Illinois Association of School Administrators. Leininger is the youngest man ever elected to the state office, which places him at the head of more than 800 school superintendents from Illinois. Discussions have been taking place for several weeks about a branch of Sauk Valley Junior College being estab-
lished in Fulton in the old Fidelity Life Building. While obstacles remain, one man close to negotiations said there was “a 50/50 chance that the project will reach a successful conclusion.” Those urging the use of the Fidelity property said as many as 200 or 300 students could be housed in the local facilities and given college training at a low cost to taxpayers.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Spring Valley Reformed Church. Contractor Joe Haan, Pastor Carl Folkert and building committee members Gene Meurs, Al Voss and Harold Kooi attended. Improvements to be made include a new entryway, new restrooms, additional classrooms, a new pastor’s study and a new ramp for the handicapped. Also planned is a furnace for the main building. Warren Wiersema and Howard Swanson have been appointed co-chairmen of a committee to plan a celebration marking the completion of Fulton’s $20,000,000 flood control system. The final phase of the project is the installations of pumps south of Fulton. The work is expected to be completed early next spring.

It will take several years to complete and cost at least $20 million, but the major rehabilitation of Lock and Dam 13 got underway even before the navigation season ended. Sightseers will be banned from the Lock and Dam visitors area for at least three years. Fulton High School has four seniors enrolled in the U.S. Army National Guard. They are Serena Shepard, Darin Sterenberg, Melissa Teras and Rob Copeland. Sherpard and Copeland went to basic training last summer at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. They will be attending advanced training this summer. Teras and Sterenberg will be attending basic training this summer at Fort Leonard Wood. The Guard teaches responsibility and gives people a sense of pride and self-confidence that will last a lifetime.

Lori Shear, owner of Country Orchids, won “Most Original” with a Christmas tree she decorated for the Fantasy of Lights in Clinton. The theme for the gala celebration was “Believe In Miracles.” The tree was the highest selling tree at the event.
The Fulton Chamber of Commerce sponsored a ribbon-cutting at Berry Vine Gifts, a new business. About 30 chamber members attended the event to welcome the business owned by Char and Dave McCloy.

Fulton City Masonic Lodge 189 and The Order of the Eastern Star, Merton Chapter 356 held a bake sale in October. Thanks to the people of Fulton, Albany and surrounding communities, the two organizations were able to raise $800 in donations. Thelma Warner, the Masonic Lodge’s representative, presented the donations to Fulton Boy Scout Troop 117 and its leader Tracy McQuistion. The donations will help the Boy Scout troop buy a travel trailer it needs to carry equipment for camping and other activities. Great expectations are envisioned for the latest addition to the city of Fulton’s community attractions. Fulton recently was deeded the Arliss Andresen property, located south of Heritage Canyon on Fourth Street, under the provision that it be maintained as a nature center. The city appointed Kyle Kopf to be the caretaker of the property.

YOUR HEALTH
By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Lazy eye, also known as amblyopia, typically begins in early infancy and childhood and usually in one eye. Initially, there does not seem to be any damage to the eye. The process develops when nerve pathways between the brain and the eye are not properly stimulated causing the brain to favor one eye because of poor vision in the other. This leads the weaker eye to wander. Down the road, the brain may ignore the signals from the weaker or lazy eye. In its more notable fashion, a lazy eye may be an eye that wanders either inward or outward or does not appear to function in coordination with the other eye. There may be poor depth perception as well and occasionally both eyes are affected. An examination by an eye doctor can be helpful in detecting this condition in a timely manner in children between the ages of 3 and 5. Obviously, if you feel your child’s eyes are wandering at any time, you
would do well to consult your doctor. The most common cause is strabismus, an imbalance of muscle formation causing the eyes to cross in or turn out. Other structural abnormalities such as congenital cataracts may contribute. The condition frequently is inherited. If untreated, there may be permanent vision loss. In fact, it is the most common cause of single eye vision impairment in young and middle-aged adults. The ideal treatment begins in early childhood with corrective eyewear. Sometimes this is all that is needed, but other times an eye patch is helpful to stimulate the weaker eye by patching the good eye. Sometimes this is done for a few hours a day or longer. On occasion, eye drops are placed in the stronger eye to help blur the vision, which encourages the use of the weaker eye. Lastly, under some situations surgery may be performed.

Holiday Gift Guide 5 reasons to shop small versus big box this holiday The importance of small businesses to the economy cannot be overstated. Though national chains often garner publicity, local businesses are equally, if not exceedingly, worthy of attention. What defines a small business as “small” varies significantly, but these businesses are generally privately owned and generate far less revenue than big corporations. General consensus also defines small businesses as companies with fewer than 500 paid employees, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Here’s a deep look at why small businesses are so vital, and why consumers should direct more of their purchasing power to smaller companies rather than the big box retailers and other national chains. 1. Autonomy and diversity The layout and offerings at national chains will be identical whether you live in the mountains or at the beach. Big box stores follow a consistent marketing strategy and look the same regardless of where they are located. That familiarity can come at the cost of variety. On the other hand, an independent business offers the products and services that are reflective of the customers and the community they serve. 2. Local hiring strategy Certain big box retailers will hire local residents, but hiring policies may push for promoting from within the organization. This could mean relocating an employee rather than bringing in someone from the community who may be more in tune with local sensibilities. Small businesses may be more inclined to hire residents they know and keep hiring centralized to the local
area — something that keeps more resources and money in the community. 3. Adaptability and change Local businesses can move more quickly to respond to economic factors that require change. Since they are focused more on the needs of their customers rather than stockholders, changes can be implemented rapidly without having to go through red tape, meetings and updates to corporate policies. Changes also can be customized to the local community at large. 4. Investing in the town According to the financial resource Financial Slot, shopping at locally owned businesses rather than big box retailers keeps more money in the community. Local property taxes and other taxes paid by the businesses go right back into the community. This helps raise overall value for homeowners and can even reduce their taxes. The funding helps keep police, fire and school departments functioning properly. 5. Turnover is greater While no one wants to see a small business fail, that fate is sometimes unavoidable. However, that turnover helps teach communities what was done poorly and helps others learn from those mistakes. It also means fresh businesses will come in and replace the old, driving new growth, opportunity and competition that keeps prices competitive. The benefits of a thriving small business sector are numerous. Consumers can do their part by patronizing these firms more frequently.
