Holiday events a hit despite chilly weather

Mother Nature failed to dampen the holiday spirit at Prophetstown Proud’s 39th annual Lighted Christmas Parade on Saturday, Nov. 30. Santa Claus and the Grinch made appearances before the parade and a variety of holiday activities were held before the evening parade.

The Dixon: Historic Theatre undergoing renovations expected to finish in 2025

DIXON – The Dixon: Historic Theatre is gearing up for one of its biggest seasons yet with more than $1 million in restoration work and about 70 events planned for the 2025 season.

Darren Mangler is the theater’s executive director and artistic producer. He said work on the 102-yearold theater’s $1.5 million restoration project began Oct. 1 and is expected to finish in March 2025.

Theater Board President Mike Venier said the project was funded through multiple revenue sources, including a $1.2 million federal grant, which required a $300,000 match.

“The city and the county each contributed $100,000 to the theater,” Venier said. “The rest came from ticket sales, theater profits and private donations.”

Mangler said Berglund Construction is tuck-pointing around the roof, taking out mortar and replacing bad bricks to support the building’s new roof.

“The new roof is coming (Nov. 26) and will be dropped in using a crane,” Mangler said Nov. 25. “They said it should take less than a month to finish the roof, which is good because we want to get ahead of the bad weather.”

Once the roof is replaced, Mangler said, the focus can shift to work inside the theater.

“All of the replacement that we have to do toward the ceiling, all the painting, getting rid of anything with lead in it, that all has to pause until the roof is secure because if there were any leaks or drainage, it could ruin the work that we do in here,” Mangler said. “So we gotta do the outside first. Now there are things that we can do until then such as redoing both bathrooms to make them more accessible for everyone.”

Mangler said the theater also will take this time to address an issue discovered near The Wings of Freedom statue next to the building. Mangler said a sewage drain was discovered there.

“It had been covered up with dirt, the grass had grown over it and all of that runoff had been hitting our wall for a couple of decades,” Mangler said. “That’s why our wall is so bad because water has been smashing into it for so long. Now that we found that drain, water is no longer touch-

ing us and we can replace that wall. Now we don’t have to worry about that happening again.”

In addition to the structural work, the inside of the 900-seat theater will be repainted.

“We’re bringing in blues and reds that were in the original paint scheme back in 1922,” Mangler said. “It’s going to be gorgeous. It’s going to be much darker, which is beneficial for theater, especially since we’re going to be doing around 10 different plays and musicals next year.”

The theater is gearing up for a range of events in 2025, including two touring shows, three original musicals and four children’s performances.

Other highlights include the Dixon Municipal Band’s seasonal concerts, performances from the Eastman School of Dance, stand-up comedy shows, movie nights, a USO show for veterans and the return of video game tournaments on the big screen.

Mangler said there are 15 tribute bands set to take the stage and plans to draw in larger acts such as Lone Star are underway.

He also said he plans to put together a local theater company.

“We have a national tour coming in called ‘Spamilton,’ which is a spoof

on ‘Hamilton,’ ” Mangler said. “It’s a national Broadway touring company that will be here on Sunday, March 2, and that will be our grand opening.”

DELORES A. SANDROCK

Born: September 4, 1935

Died: November 26, 2024

Delores A. Sandrock, 89 of Prophetstown died Tuesday November 26, 2024 at her home.

She was born on September 4, 1935 in Prophetstown, the daughter of Kelmer B. and Grace H. (Housenga) Melton and was a graduate of Lyndon High School. She married Burdette Sandrock on September 2, 1956 in Erie. He died August 24, 2023. Delores was a florist and had owned and operated Hillcrest Greenhouse for over 30 years. She also worked as a kitchen aide at Prophetstown High School for 23 years and was affectionately referred to as “grandma” by many. Delores and her husband were both active in the Percheron horse community for many years. She was a long time member of First Lutheran Church,

Prophetstown.

Survivors include her daughter, Gwen (Chawn) Hurd of Prophetstown; sister Donna Kniskern of Prophetstown; brother K.B. (Carol) Melton Jr of Erie; seven grandchildren: Nickie Morgan, Scott Silva, Danny Silva, Korin Davis, Karlie Sandrock-Walsh, Devin McDivitt and Quincy McDivitt; 17 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; her son in law Tommy McDivitt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter LuAnn McDivitt; son Glen Sandrock; grandson Anthony Silva; great granddaughters: Emma and Prudence McDivitt; and brother Jack Melton.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday December 3, 2024 from 4-8 PM at the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown. The funeral will follow on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the church. Burial will conclude at Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory, Prophetstown Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church or the Prophetstown Fire Department.

I. A public hearing to approve a proposed property tax levy increase for Prophetstown Township for 2025 will be held on December 11, 2024 at 6:00 P.M. at 113 High Street, Prophetstown, IL.

OREGON – A rural Dixon man charged with attempting to murder three police officers in June was presented Nov. 21 with 770 pages of police reports, medical records and other evidence that will be presented as his case proceeds through the courts.

Jonathon Gounaris, 32, received the paperwork during a status hearing in Ogle County.

After a June 12 standoff with police in the rural Dixon subdivision of Lost Lake, Gounaris was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of possession of a firearm without a

On Nov. 21, Gounaris appeared before Judge John “Ben” Roe for the status hearing. He was escorted into court by three Winnebago County corrections officers and two Ogle County court deputies. He wore a yellow jumpsuit issued to inmates, handcuffs and leg irons.

Ogle County Assistant Public Defender Michael O’Brien told Roe that he’s been having trouble scheduling meetings with Gounaris and consequently has not been able to deliver the discovery, which is necessary for Gounaris to review.

Discovery refers to the formal process in which parties involved in a court case exchange information about the case.

Discovery is intended to prevent “trial by ambush” in which one side is surprised by evidence at trial they had no prior knowledge of.

In Gounaris’ case, discovery is about 770 pages long and cannot be sent to him through the mail because there’s a limit to the number of pages allowed to be sent, O’Brien said.

1974: Grand opening for B & M Tropical Wonderland

Dec. 2, 1964

At the monthly meeting of the City Council, Floyd Van Dellen was employed as a policeman for the city of Fulton. He will work with Chief of Police John Voss on a full-time basis starting Dec. 1. Van Dellen had been working as a policeman on a parttime basis for the past year.

Robert Yarbrough, of Yarbrough Electric Service of Morrison, received an award from Hotpoint representatives. A plaque was presented to Yarbrough for having exceeded his quota of sales for washers and dryers in the area.

50 years

Nov. 4, 1974

Marie Van Kampen, owner of B & M Tropical Wonderland, will hold a grand opening at the store’s new location. The newly remodeled building is located at 1215 Fourth St. The business features nearly 70 aquariums filled with 150 varieties of tropical fish. Other sections of the store have supplies and aquariums from 5½ gallons to 130 gallons.

The Fulton City Council voted 4-2 to route traffic from the new Mark Morris Memorial Bridge onto 10th Avenue by way of 13th Avenue and Third Street to Routes 84 and 136 and to Route 30 by way of Fourth Street.

40 years

Dec. 5, 1984

Robert Buikema received a gold watch and a certificate of appreciation at the annual dinner of the Fulton Fire Protection District. Buikema is retiring from the department after serving for 16 years. Fire Chief Delbert Housenga presented the awards to Buikema and other firemen eligible to receive service pins.

The River Bend School District won a temporary victory in its effort to have some real estate rezoned so that it may be sold for a residential development. A motion to accept a recommendation of the Zoning Board of Appeals that the request for a variance be denied failed for lack of a second. The City Council then voted to table the question.

30 years

Nov. 30, 1994

Fulton natives Pat Hanniford and Bill Huisenga have concluded a successful season as members of the

Loras College football team. Hanniford, a senior defensive lineman, concluded his Duhawks career as a three-year starter and the 21st alltime leading tackler in Loras history. Huisenga, a junior offensive lineman, is a two-year starter for the Duhawks.

Fulton will honor residents Harold and Thelma Wierenga at the sixth annual Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration. The Wierengas will preside over the lighting of the community tree at the dike on 10th Avenue, which officially will begin the celebration.

20 years

Dec. 1, 2004

Gary Dykstra and Don Dykema, members of the Whiteside County Cattlemen’s Association, donated 1-pound packages of hamburger to the food pantry. For more than 15 years, the Whiteside County Cattlemen’s Association has been providing meat for the needy. The pantry serves an average of 60 families each month.

Whiteside County Sheriff Roger Schipper and Chief Deputy Larry VanDyke displayed a plaque that the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office received from the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge program at a ceremony in Rosemont, Illinois. The sheriff’s office won first place in its category for the department’s efforts in promoting traffic safety in Whiteside County.

Fulton’s annual Christmas Walk is sponsored by the Fulton Chamber of Commerce. Even though the Chamber no longer is under the city’s “umbrella,” the partnership and cooperation continue. April Edwards-Eshelman, executive director of the Fulton Chamber of Commerce, and Melissa Wiebenga, city of Fulton director of tourism and executive director of the Robert Fulton Community Center, filled downtown planters with spruce branches and red bows in preparation for the Christmas Walk.

Thirty lanterns decorated by local businesses and organizations will be on display the night of the Christmas Walk at the Fulton Masonic Lodge. The lanterns will be part of a silent auction with proceeds benefiting the Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Whiteside County Board approves permit for solar farm

MORRISON – The Whiteside County Board approved a special-use permit for a proposed solar farm at 3493 W. LeFevre Road, where Nexamp Solar LLC wants to build the LeFevre Road Solar Project.

The Sterling City Council in September approved a preannexation agreement for the land on which the solar farm will be built. The land is owned by Bill Hermes of TN Hermes. As part of the preannexation agreement, Sterling city officials sent a letter to the Whiteside County Board to show their support for the solar farm’s development.

The Whiteside County Board at its Nov. 19 meeting approved the special-use permit on a 13-9 vote, with two abstentions.

Nexamp initially proposed constructing a 5-megawatt solar farm using 28 acres of a 42-acre parcel of prime farmland at that location.

However, Nexamp Business Development Manager Jack Curry told the Sterling City Council in September that Hermes wished to keep as much of the land for farming as possible.

As a result, the project was scaled down to a 4-megawatt solar farm on

25 acres, leaving 12 to 14 acres for farming.

Sterling City Manager Scott Schumard said in September that the city initially hoped to use the land for

future industrial development westward. However, Hermes does not want industrial development on the site in the future and his wishes forced the city to shift its focus elsewhere,

Schumard said.

Curry said the project is estimated to garner $14,000 in tax revenue for Sterling in its first year and more than $278,000 during its 40-year lifetime.

Pulmonary hypertension and your heart discussed

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition in which the pressure in the vessels of the lungs is elevated. This puts strain on the right side of the heart and it can be a very serious problem.

The symptoms mimic other conditions and include shortness of breath, feeling tired, fainting and chest pain. These symptoms naturally limit activity and exercise.

Pulmonary hypertension can have many causes. Some common conditions include emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Others include congestive heart failure and birth defects. The popular diet drug Fen-Phen also contributed to this condition.

There also is a condition known as primary pulmonary hypertension where there is no known cause.

All forms are generally permanent although treatment may improve symptoms.

YOUR HEALTH

If your doctor suspects this condition, they may order an echocardiogram. This test can detect useful information about the heart and also the pulmonary or lung arteries.

Depending on the cause, sometimes medicines are employed. Calcium channel blockers and at times blood thinning medicine may help.

Oxygen also is given frequently. With primary pulmonary hypertension, the medicine is given through a vein. Prostacyclin may lower the blood pressure in your pulmonary arteries.

Viagra under its generic name sildenafil citrate also has been used to help relieve symptoms because of its ability to improve blood flow.

McCombie hosting diaper drive to support families in need

SAVANNA – Northwest Illinois residents are invited to help support local families in need this holiday season.

State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, is holding a holiday diaper drive spearheaded by state Rep. Ryan Spain to collect diapers, baby wipes and diaper cream for families struggling with financial hardships.

“With the rising cost of living, it’s more important than ever to help families meet their basic needs this holiday season,” McCombie said. “The season is a joyful time for many, but it can also be a difficult period for families struggling to make ends meet. No one should have to choose between essentials like diapers and other necessities.”

OSF worker to become Dixon KSB Hospital president

OSF to take over KSB on Jan. 1, becoming OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center

DIXON – In anticipation of OSF HealthCare taking over operations at KSB Hospital in Dixon on Jan. 1, 2025, a longtime OSF employee was selected as president and a longtime KSB Hospital employee was selected as vice president, according to a news release from OSF on Nov. 26.

Jackie Kernan, who has been part of OSF since 2009, will become president of OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center, which will be KSB Hospital’s new name.

It will be the third time that Kernan has led a community hospital undergoing a merger with OSF.

As president, Kernan, who is

replacing KSB President and CEO David Schreiner, will take the lead aligning the hospital with OSF HealthCare’s overall strategy. She also will be responsible for directing all internal operations “while continuing to ensure that high-quality and cost-effective health care is delivered to all patients,” the release said.

“Jackie [Kernan] has been a trusted and respected leader for the communi-

ties of Princeton and Kewanee and I know she will do the same for the Sauk Valley communities,” said AJ Querciagrossa, CEO of OSF HealthCare’s western region.

Kernan earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of St. Francis and her Master of Science in nursing management leadership from the Saint Francis College of Nursing.

Kernan currently serves as president of OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee, formerly known as Kewanee Hospital. The hospital affiliated with OSF in 2014, according to osfhealthcare.org, and Kernan became president in 2018. She also is president of OSF HealthCare Saint Clare Medical Center in Princeton, which was formerly known as Perry Memorial Hospital. That hospital officially became part of OSF in 2021, which is the same year that Kernan became president.

According to the release, she will continue to act as interim president at these locations until a new president is named.

As for vice president, Drew Fenner, former vice president and chief quality officer of KSB Hospital, was selected for the position. Fenner has been part of KSB for more than 10 years. At OSF Saint Katharine he will oversee operations and special projects, according to the release.

The partnership between KSB and OSF HealthCare was made official May 10 when the two organizations announced in a news release that they’d signed a term sheet and expected a full merger. KSB will be renamed OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center in honor of Catholic Saint Katharine Drexel. It becomes the 17th hospital in the OSF ministry, the release said.

grated medical group with about 70 practitioners providing medical services in primary and select specialty areas at six locations in Lee and southern Ogle counties.

The agreement includes $40 million in funding for facility renovations to improve access to care locally and to create seamless referrals to subspecialties. With the affiliation, KSB expects the continued employment of its staff, significant investments in building and technology and enhanced access to specialty resources in the local community.

KSB began formally exploring potential partnerships in February because of escalating operating and staffing costs, as well as changes to health care financing and how patients use health care.

According to a resolution presented to the Dixon City Council on Aug. 5, KSB’s board analyzed the feasibility of continuing to operate the hospital independently and found it likely would lead to its closure.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital experienced an increase in expenses including wages, pharmaceuticals, utilities, facility costs and medical supplies. Those increased expenses were not covered by increased reimbursement rates because KSB, like other rural hospitals, serves a large portion of patients on Medicare and Medicaid, which reimburse at a lower rate than commercial insurance, according to the resolution.

As a result, KSB operated with negative margins in 2022 and 2023. Those

operating margin challenges led to the erosion of the balance sheet and in January 2024 the hospital’s cash on hand dropped to five days, which made it impossible to borrow funds and reinvest in the organization, according to the resolution.

OSF HealthCare, headquartered in Peoria, has 16 hospitals with an estimated 2,131 licensed beds throughout Illinois and Michigan. OSF has about 24,000 employees, known as “mission partners,” across more than 150 locations. It operates OSF OnCall, a digital health operating unit; OSF Home Care Services, an extensive network of home health and hospice services; OSF HealthCare Foundation; and OSF Ventures, which provides investment capital for promising health care innovation startups.

Six donors reached gallon pin milestones. Luke VanderBleek obtained a 3-gallon pin; Kari Forster reached a 4-gallon pin; Mel Johnson attained a 5-gallon pin; Marsha Geerts gained a 7-gallon pin; Pam Shank secured a

17-gallon pin; and Lyle Bush accomplished a 31-gallon pin status!

These six terrific contributors have given 67 gallons total and helped 576 lives! The ARC staff counted eight deferrals, but I only counted six. Most were deferred for not enough hemoglobin to donate. This does not mean that the person is anemic, because the ARC has a high-end number for criteria to give blood.

I recommend anyone who has been deferred before to take overthe-counter iron tablets (or ARC-recommended Flintstones gummy vitamins) for a few days before donating, eating a high protein and iron supper the night before (my hubby and I eat steak the night before blood drives), and washing their hands with very warm water when they arrive at the drive.

Regardless, we had six walk-ins that balanced out the six cancella-

tions and the three “no-shows”.

I am indebted to those who cancel ahead of time, so that we can have time to fill the vacated appointment slot. With no shows, we do not have an opportunity to put another donor into their spot.

I do message the no shows to give them the opportunity to come in later and still donate. And, I’d have to say that most of the no-shows are donors who made their appointment on their own, and not through us at the blood drives or by me. I have started to message those who made their own appointments text reminders the day before or the morning of the

drives; maybe that is why we had fewer this time.

Also, please know that if you come earlier than your assigned appointment time, those with earlier set appointments will be taken first, and you will have to wait until the ARC staff can work you in. Most of our donors are very gracious and patient, of which I am very grateful. We have a pretty good bunch of kind and caring regular blood donors that attend our drives.

Even the ARC staff have commented to me how tremendous our donors are, and how great the music and food is in Morrison. I

have several who have gone to other drives in other towns, and they prefer us here in the Morrison area.

At an Oct. 17 status hearing, an order was made for the release of that information, which includes police reports and hospital records of the officers who were shot. Excluded, however, is video, cellphone and iPad data.

O’Brien was granted permission to give those documents to Gounaris at the hearing Thursday and made a motion to continue his review with Gounaris with no objection from Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock.

Rock then asked for Gounaris’ continued detention.

O’Brien disagreed and asked for his release. He pointed to Gounaris being moved to “the general population” at the Winnebago County Jail and regularly attending Bible study as positive behaviors.

A condition of his release would be to seek counseling and other treatments for mental health because “addressing that issue would mitigate the threat to society,” O’Brien said.

Gounaris’ defense has continued to argue for his release so he can receive mental health treatment. Despite those arguments, Gounaris has remained in jail.

On Nov. 21, Roe again denied the request for his release and ruled for “continued detention until the next court date based on the previous rulings and findings,” he said.

Gounaris is charged with shooting three members of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team after a three-hour standoff when police tried to enter his home at 402 Wild Rice Lane in Lost Lake.

The ERT is made up of individuals from agencies including the sheriff’s office, Oregon and Byron police departments, and SWAT medics from the Rochelle Fire Department.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Lt. Jason Ketter was shot in the face and taken by air ambulance to OSF Medical Center in Rockford, where he underwent surgery. He was released from the hospital June 14.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputy Tad Dominski was shot in the arm, and Tyler Carls of the Rochelle Fire Department was shot in the torso. They were treated at KSB Hospital in Dixon and released later that evening.

Gounaris also was shot during the gunfire exchange and was taken to KSB Hospital in Dixon, where he was treated before being booked into the Winnebago County Jail on June 18.

Gounaris’ next court appearance is at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 19.
