Graduates celebrate accomplishments By Sarah Ford For Shaw Media

Forty-nine Prophetstown High School seniors received diplomas at their graduation on Sunday, May 30. The weather was perfect for the outdoor ceremony on the football field, the first of its kind at the school due to ongoing Covid-19 regulations. Family and friends filled the bleachers to celebrate the ending of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. Principal Keith Stewart welcomed the students and their families and encouraged the graduates to “pursue your passions and make us all proud in the process.” It was the first time all the classmates had been together at the school this year, due to ongoing remote learning options that some students chose. Salutatorian Sydney Minssen, Valedictorian Emily Brooks, and Senior Class Representative Fiona Huffstutler each addressed their classmates, recalling the memo-

After much excitement and anticipation, Benson’s on Lake Carlton officially opened for business last week at Morrison-Rockwood State Park. It brings life back to the rustic building on the lakeshore that has been vacant since Rockwood Marina & Restaurant closed last year during the pandemic. Bud and Stephanie Benson, who also own and operate Benson’s on the Mississippi at 108 S. Main St. in Albany, reopened the popular State Park destination on Tuesday, May 25. Bud smokes all the meats, specializing in hickory-smoked meats, fish, BBQ, and other traditional Midwest and Southern-inspired dishes. The Lake Carlton menu includes beef barbacoa (a form of cooking meat that originated in the Arawak-speaking Caribbean with the Taíno people, from which the term “barbecue” derives” or pulled chicken tacos, loaded nachos, grilled brats, hot dogs, sausages, side salads, as well as a taco bar with various toppings, from fresh cilantro and onions to peppers and lime slices. Manager Laurie Hollister said the first week in business was great, with many campers and locals taking advantage of the nice weather to try their first meal on the screenedin deck. A craft soda machine and two more coolers are on order, with plans to offer a wider variety of food and drinks for campers, visitors, and locals, said Hollister. The building had some required upgrades to complete, which pushed back the opening date just a bit. But as the summer camping season officially kicks off, the shop is already stocked with hot food, ice cream, slushies, drinks, and other getaway essentials, from canned goods to lanterns to fishing gear to candy, plus bags of ice and firewood to make the camping experience complete. There’s also selection of bait for the lake’s many anglers. Octavio Flores and Eustacio Diaz of Sterling stopped into the shop to buy worms on Friday, May 28. “It’s our favorite fishing spot, unbelievably there’s a lot of good fish here,” said Flores, adding that they were hoping for bass, blue gill, or anything, really. “We came at a good time,” he said of the day’s catches on a gray and windy day. Lake Carlton, at 77 acres, is home to a bevy of wildlife and forested shores. In addition to the bait, meals, and porch seating with a lake view,

the business offers canoe, kayak, pedal boat, and motorboat rentals, either by the hour, four hours, or eight hours. A driver’s license or state ID is required for rentals. The building is owned by the state, so there is a lease and agreement on hours for the cabin-like space that hits the right spot for campers and diners. Hours are 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed on Mondays. Benson’s on Lake Carlton is located at 18750 Lake Road, Morrison. On Sunday, May 23, about 12:24 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Kenneth B. Herron, 48, of Clinton, Iowa, at Route 30 and Carroll Road (Route 78 North) for equipment and moving violations. As a result of the stop, Morrison police arrested and charged Herron with improper lane use, driving while license revoked and driving under the influence of alcohol. Fourth of July fireworks ‘a go’ in Prophetstown The Prophetstown Fire Department and Men’s Club recently met and decided the annual fireworks display at Prophetstown High School would be held July 4 this year. After talking with Illinois Department of Natural Resources representatives, it was determined COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed enough to have a large outdoor gathering. Using the new guideline of 30 people

per 1,000 square feet, the park would be large enough to host a crowd of 8,000 to 10,000 people, which is more than adequate for the fireworks display. The fireworks committee asks that attendees respect social distancing in the park, especially between groups of people. The 3-on-3 basketball tournament normally sponsored on July 4 by prom parents will not take place this year.

The fire department will open its food stand in the park about 5 p.m. July 4. There will be no band, but there will be recorded music. Donations will be accepted at several points of entry to the park. The gold and silver sponsors program from past years will be continued. Donations of $100 qualify as a gold sponsor. A $50 donation is a silver sponsor. Special donations can be dropped off at

Hometown Hardware in Prophetstown. The Men’s Club will be transitioning its role in the annual fireworks display to the fire department, though its volunteers still will be active in the program. The committee hopes everyone enjoys the 60-plus year tradition of Prophetstown’s Fourth of July fireworks.

With coffee, sweet treats, and a live broadcast with Aaron Dail of WQUD 107.7 Vintage Radio, Erie residents had a chance to meet with members of the Police Department to get any questions answered, provide feedback, and get to know the local men and women in blue. Police Chief Rollie Elder said it was a great turnout, and the department looks forward to hosting other community-oriented events, such as

more coffee conversations or biking with a cop. Their mission is to keep the lines of communication open and find ways to best serve the community and its’ needs. CLINTON, IA - Danny D. Bridgeman, age 51, of Garden Plain, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2021. He was born on June 3, 1969, in Onawa, IA, the son of Verlin “Butch” and Retha Lee (Hasbrouck) Bridgeman. Danny attended Charter Oak/Ute, Iowa and Albany, IL grade schools, graduating from Fulton High School in 1987. He was confirmed into the Albany United Methodist Church. Danny worked with his father in construction in Ida Grove, IA, until moving to Clinton, IA, where he worked at Collis Inc. and most recently, Rail One. He enjoyed the outdoors, riding ATVs and horses. Danny also enjoyed playing pool, watching his son play football, and was an avid LA Raiders fan. He dearly loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Danny had a contagious smile and loved to make everyone laugh. Survivors include his children, Nikol Hamstra of Sioux City, IA, and her children: Zaylaa and Floyd; Makenzee (Daniel Posey) Schipper of Morrison, IL, and her children, Nevaeh and Athena; and Dylan and Jenna Bridgeman of Fulton, IL; his mother, Retha Lee (Richard) Bielenberg, Morrison, IL; his stepmother, Jolene Bridgeman of Denison, IA; siblings, Kelley-Eva Bielenberg, Clinton, IA, and her children Jocelyn and Jace; Richard (Robin Andersen) Bielenberg Jr. of Harlan, IA, Kristy (Rodney) Feldman of Harlan, IA, and Diane (Ricky) Sanchez of North Andover, MA; aunt and uncles, Lavone (Hans) Witzel of Castana, IA, Rick Hasbrouck of Montana, and Jerry (Joanie) Hasbrouck of Council Bluffs, IA; and nieces, nephews, other members of the Bridgeman, Hasbrouck and Bielenberg families. FULTON - Donna M. Buikema, age 63, died Monday, May 24, 2021 at Centennial Rehab in Moline. Donna was born on June 30, 1957, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Ron and Janice (Daley) Johnson. She married Kenneth Buikema on December 21, 1985. He died March 30, 2016. Donna was employed with GE in Morrison. Following his graduation, he worked first as a prosecutor and then as an administrative law judge for the National Labor Relations Board, retiring on January 3, 2003. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed gardening, following the Pennsylvania sports teams, and was an avid model railroad builder. William is survived by his children, Bruce (Oksana) Pannier of Prague, Czech Republic, Richard Pannier, of Seoul, South Korea, and Robert (Lori) Pannier of Davenport, IA; sister, Martha DeFord, California; brother-in-law, James Stratton (Connie), Cordova, IL; granddaughters, Ashley (Nathan) Sullivan and Amber, Kristina, and Alicia Pannier; and great-grandchildren, Dominic, Kateryna, Arizona, and Anastasia Sullivan. Get ready for local treasure hunting. Erie, Port Byron and Cordova will be having villagewide sales the next two weekends. The Erie all-town sale will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, June 4, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5. Revitalize Erie will be sponsoring the maps, which are available online at The Erie CORNer Facebook page, and will be distributed to businesses Thursday, June 3. The Port Byron all-town sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 10, through Saturday, June 12. The 30th annual Lyndon Car Show and Lyndon Fire Department Pancake Breakfast will return this year on Sunday, June 6. The car show runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Firefighters will be serving breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon. The car show brings classic, vintage and custom rides to Richmond Park (by the water tower), rain or shine. An award ceremony will be at 3 p.m., with dash plaques, Best of Show (original and modified) and prizes for Best Ford, Best GM, Best

Mopar, Best Paint and Best Interior. The Boy Scouts will have a food stand. Music will be provided by 3-D Sound. The playground and shaded park will provide a place for families to eat, relax and play. The firefighters’ pancake breakfast fundraiser will support the department’s needs. All proceeds go toward

SVCC to begin pilot program for earned tuition Sauk Valley Community College is piloting its earned tuition program in two towns thanks to a Whiteside County donor. Soon-to-be high school freshmen in Fulton and Prophetstown will be the first to participate in the Sauk Impact Program, allowing high schoolers to earn three years of tuition and fees at the college by building up community volunteer hours. The pilot program will provide an opportunity for students to earn tuition ahead of the expected rollout of the program throughout the district in 2022, and it will help the college gauge success and improvements needed early on, said Lori Cortez, Sauk’s dean of institutional advancement. “It’s a good way to encourage engagement in community service and civic pride with these young people,” she said. “And they can start to give back to the community today.” Ther e’s about 120 stu d ents in classes in Fulton and Prophetstown, and Cortez said they expect about 60 to join the program, though they would be happy to welcome more. There will be quarterly surveys and focus groups with parents and students in the pilot program to iden-

The college is working on an app in which students will be able to track their service hours, and organizations throughout the region would be able to post volunteer opportunities.

“We want students to know the organizations in the community and the good work that these organizations do,” Cortez said. The donor wanted to invest in area students and make sure there wasn’t a

financial burden for those wanting to advance their education, she said. “The kids are going to give back to the community and be tied to the community through service,” she said. “They will be more involved and attached to the Sauk Valley.” The college is looking to raise $10 million for the program, which could launch as early as spring 2022. River Bend School District Superintendent Darryl Hogue has been involved in planning the Sauk Impact Program since 2018, and the college values his leadership with helping define requirements for the program, Cortez said. Students would need to meet five criteria to qualify. Criteria is registering for the program by Sept. 1 of their freshman year; graduate on time or early with their class; participate in 25 hours of community service a year totaling 100 hours; graduate from high school or an accredited home school program within the district; and apply for at least one other local/state/ national scholarship, as well as complete FAFSA. Those who meet the requirements and who enroll in a career or transfer program would be given up to three years of tuition and fees.

Erie High School hosts Career Day featuring area employers Erie High School hosted a Career Day on May 7, with students having the opportunity to attend three career sessions to learn about industries and educational experiences. Sessions included health care with a nurse and paramedic, graphic arts with Jamison Media Services and Stahr Media, auto/welding/diesel and transportation with Walmart Distribution and UTI, agriculture with Gold Star FS, hospitality with Harvest Bakery, fire/police/EMT, finance, CNA, cosmetology, education with EHS staff, and vet tech/business sales with Erin McCalla. There were presentations through BHC Career Path about the college balancing act, how to interview and résumé tips. The school brought back alumni to talk about their experiences, including Natalie Wildt (paramedic), Skylar Steimle (National Guard), Kyle Barber (firefighter) and Isabelle McWilliams (baker at Harvest Bakery). The event was coordinated by school counselor Brittney Ramos.

An explanation on why the sun is not the enemy BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The sun has become like sodium – something the medical profession likes to pick on. Like sodium, the vilification is probably overdone. The profession has promoted a few facts into a theory that may be doing more harm than good. It is a fact that some skin cancers are increased with sun. However, these are not the deadly ones and are readily treatable. As much as the profession preaches, there is not great proof that there is a connection between the sun and deadly melanoma. Under the guise of promoting skin protection, well-intentioned people have lessened helpful exposure to the sun with all its many benefits. Fur-

thermore, they have in some instances increased their risk of cancer because their sunscreen has many toxic chemicals. The Food and Drug Administration ignored the problem for years before coming out and noting that PABA, aminobenzoic acid and trolamine salicylate have toxicities that linger on skin and blood for weeks after application. Because there is an obvious desire to avoid sunburn for the sake of pain, there may be a time and place for sunscreen. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide appear safe and effective in blocking harmful rays. Also, severe sunburns may increase the risk of skin cancer. Meanwhile, the excess fear of sun exposure has contributed to decreased physical activity and overall

health and well-being. Being outside and getting direct sunlight has many benefits. First and foremost, the absorption of vitamin D. This vitamin is actually a hormone that has one of the most important aspects of immune system function and protection. The best outcomes with COVID-19 are associated with the highest blood levels of vitamin D. It turns out heart disease may improve with sunlight exposure. A significant factor is the production of a protein in the skin known as PERIOD2 or PER2. It supports the blood vessels. The compound nitric oxide also is increased with sun exposure, and protects circulation by helping vessels to expand. This activation is best with morning sunlight taken in by the eyes.

Blood pressure may be improved with sunlight because it contributes to the production of nitric oxide. This compound also helps relax the smooth muscles that help relax blood vessels. It is an important antioxidant. The sun lessens cholesterol damage by lessening the charge on that molecular complex and therefore leading to less plaque buildup. Another important compound improved by sun exposure is melatonin. Besides the benefits for better sleep, melatonin may help reduce anxiety. Serotonin is another important mood chemical influenced by the sun. These measure help to explain some seasonal affective disorders and how they may be benefited by light exposure.

this new location.

May 29, 1991

The silver anniversary of Harbor Crest Nursing Home will be celebrated with an open house. The first two residents were admitted on June 3, 1966, when 51 beds were available. Mayor Kenneth VenHuizen will hand out Patriot Awards to Fulton area servicemen and women who have returned home from the Persian Gulf. The ceremony will be in front of the Fulton Post Office.

Albany Grade School principal Ken Fate spent time on the roof of the school reading books to the students. The students exceeded the amount of 450 books read and passed the accelerated reader test that accompanied each book. Fate had to spend a certain amount of minutes on the roof for each book that was read.

MCH teams up with surgical society to offer free education Morrison Community Hospital recently teamed up with the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons to offer registrants 16 free continuing education hours. The event, which attracted almost 600 attendees, was offered over a twoday period that was filled with topics

ranging from total ankle implants to advanced modalities in wound care. This was the ninth year of the event, which was completely virtual this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. The Morrison Community Hospital board and the board of the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons realized they still

could offer the event without face to face contact. Many participants expressed gratitude for providing free education. “We were so happy to provide such excellent education free to our attendees,” said Dr. David Yeager, a podiatric surgeon, chairperson of the event and

educational chair for ASPS. “The turnout was phenomenal, and the lectures were extremely well-received. I want to thank both boards for their leadership and insight in bringing both entities together for a common cause.” Next year’s conference will be April 1-2.

Pastor Dave Efflandt, a native of Moline, will lead worship at 9 a.m. Efflandt is a 1992 graduate of Moline High School. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in music education. After graduation, he taught middle school band for 12 years. When he returned to the Midwest in 2011, he attended Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated in 2015 with a master’s of divinity degree. His experience includes four years at rural churches and two years as lead/administrative pastor at St.

John’s Lutheran Church in Kasson, Minnesota. He also has served as music minister and youth minister at various locations. Efflandt is married to his high school sweetheart, Dave Efflandt Sarah. They are the parents of two children, Austin and Bella. Austin attends Luther College. Bella will start her college career at Wartburg in the fall.
