Council appoints Neblung as Fulton Police Chief BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media

The Fulton City Council approved a contract with newly appointed Chief of Police Nicholas Neblung at a continuation meeting on May 27. Neblung has been serving as interim Police Chief since former chief David Bartels retired Dec. 28, 2020. The contract goes into effect immediately with a salary of $68,000, along with the same benefits as other city employees. He will also receive four weeks of vacation a year, and a cell phone with charges

paid. The contract also requires full-time residency by June 30, 2022, as Neblung currently lives in Clinton, Iowa. The appointment is for one year, with the contract valid through April 30, 2022, or to be renewed at that time. Nick Neblung The council also approved an ordinance amending the number of liquor licenses to be issued to 15, with six Class A, two Class A-1, four Class B, one Class B-1, two Class

C, and one Class D, effective immediately, with one more Class A license added. In final action, the Council appointed a special committee titled Emergency Operations Plan consisting of Third Ward Alderman Keith King, Mayor Wendy Ottens, and City Administrator/Public Works Director Dan Clark. The committee will be tasked with emergency planning and implementation, which was inspired after the Aug. 10, 2020 derecho that took out power to part of the city for over a week. The next City Council meeting will be Monday, June 21 at 5:30 p.m.

The Farm Way Sanctuary, an 80-acre farmstead just a few miles outside of Morrison, is home to a robust bevy of animal rescues. Horses, pot-bellied pigs, goats, cats, dogs, and chickens are free to roam the wooded terrain and grassy hills that they now call home. It’s a safe haven where all of life’s best possibilities are encouraged for everybody, whether four-legged or two. The Farm Way is the dream of Nicole Fairchild and Mike Himebaugh and their 6-year-old son, Tex. They established the non-profit in 2014 and strive every day to care for the animals from all walks of life - the wounded and unwanted, the young and the old. They grow food, work with the land, and tend to the animals 24/7, all while planning and executing fundraisers throughout the year to keep the operation running. Maybelle is the newest addition to The Farm Way, and her story is a bit different than the others as she’s the first wild mustang to join the herd. She was captured as a young filly during a roundup in the Green Mountains of Wyoming in 2018. She was separated from her mother, branded by the Bureau of Land Management, and adopted out through their Training Incentive Program (TIP) which provides a payment of $1000 to the adoptee, with a requirement to keep the horse for one year. A young, untrained wild horse has but one fate at auction, and she was scheduled to get on a truck bound for a meat processing plant in Canada or Mexico. But her story didn’t end there – the horse was one of the few that are rescued at the last moment from that fate, this time by an organization called The Hooved Companion Project (HCP) in Hebron, Illinois. The owners of HCP were visiting family in Colorado when they were alerted to the plight of the young filly in a ‘kill lot’ that happened to be just miles from

the home they were visiting. HCP was able to get her out of Colorado and to a holding farm in Wisconsin. Michelle from the Hooved Companion Project followed her intuition and reached out to The Farm Way. As a child, Nicole - a Wisconsin native - had ridden her horses many times through the creeks and fields of the very same farm where the young filly was staying. Fate and HCP delivered the horse to The Farm Way on May 1, and she became Maybelle, the May Mustang. Her name means ‘The Beautiful

One’ and that is the energy that she brings to the Sanctuary. “Every horse, every piggy, every animal and person has a mission, a gift,” said Nicole. “Maybelle’s gift is inspiration, and she inspires you to live a life in truth. When you can find beauty in yourself and the world around you, you will find your truth, your purpose. In that truth is the Beautiful One.” Maybelle was easily accepted into the herd, that is now 27 strong, and she is learning to run the land with them. The Green Mountain horses are known for being stocky and sturdy, and Maybelle embodies those physical qualities. She’s taking her time getting used to her new environment and is sometimes startled by big winds, stemming from the trauma of the helicopter roundup. She’s becoming a part of what Mike and Nicole call a conscious community – a place where there is no competition or chaos, and animals from all walks of life get along. Mike, Nicole, and Tex interact with all the horses daily while still encouraging the herd to emulate the wild as much as possible, to have a freedom that the horses of the Green Mountains experience for a lifetime. “We’re here to support what they need and envision the best possibilities for them,” added Nicole. “We’re honored to be their Sanctuary.” The inspiring tales and adventures of the animals, plus contact information, can be found at The Farm Way on Facebook, Instagram or at www.TheFarmWay.com.

TOMRV brings hundreds of bicyclists to area Hundreds of bicyclists rode on the roads and trails of upper Rock Island and lower Whiteside Counties on Saturday, June 12 as part of the 44th annual Tour of the Mississippi River Valley, a Midwest cycling tradition with scenic routes through farmlands. Organizers chose the stretch along the river as an alternative route this year due to Covid-19, with over 600 bicyclists from 17 states registered for this year’s event. There were refreshments and bike repair equipment at various stations along the trails, while the gazebo in downtown Port Byron had a smorgasbord of food and drinks plus cooling tents for the riders. Quilters Guild to sponsor bus trip to Missouri

The River Cities Quilters Guild will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the Fulton Presbyterian Church. The speaker is Bev Peterman of DeWitt, who will share how she takes photos or other pictures and creates art quilts with applique and thread painting. She had several elaborate quilts at the Quilt the Town show in Clinton in October 2020. She also will be sharing a trunk show of her quilts. The quilters guild will be sponsoring a three-day bus trip Aug. 26-28 to Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, Missouri, and six other quilt shops in Missouri. The first day will be spent at Missouri Star Quilt Co. where they have 12

Street resurfacing begins in Morrison

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that, weather permitting, resurfacing of U.S. 30 from Jackson Street to French Creek in Morrison began June 14. Daily lane closures with flaggers will take place throughout the project. Access to residences and businesses within the work zone will be maintained throughout the construction. Martin & Company Excavating of Oregon is the contractor of the $438,324 project, which is expected to be completed by July 30. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

At a recent meeting of the Fulton Kiwanis Club, Larry Russell was named the 2021 Outstanding Kiwanian of the Year. MORRISON - Anna Schroeder, who shot and killed her mother, Peggy, in their Morrison home on July 6, 2017, will be sentenced at a two-day hearing Nov. 3 and 5 in Whiteside County Court. Anna Schroeder, who was 15 when she shot her mother between the eyes after using a ruse to get her to place a towel over her face, was to be sentenced on Nov. 4 and 6, 2020, but COVID-19 pandemic restrictions put a pause on many court cases. Schroeder pleaded guilty Jan. 8, 2020, to second-degree murder. Two counts of first-degree murder and charges of arson and concealment of a homicidal death were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Schroeder, who is being held at the Mary Davis Detention Home in Galena, did not appear at the status hearing. Her presence will be required at sentencing. Both sides said they were

Anna Schroeder, who turned 15 just three days before the murder, will turn 19 on July 3. The protesters said it is a gross delay of justice and a

slap in the face to Peggy Schroeder’s survivors that Anna Schroeder still is at Mary Davis, which is primarily a juvenile home where she can attend classes, get counseling, watch movies and the like, as opposed to being housed in the Whiteside County Jail. “It’s about time. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder,” said Charlene Wilkinson, Peggy Schroeder’s sister. “They should have hauled her here [to Whiteside County Jail] right away. It’s a broken system.” On a motion filed by Whiteside County State’s Attorney Terry Costello on April 20, Schroeder’s accused accomplice, Rachel Helm of Rock Falls, was transferred from Mary Davis to the jail, where she awaits resolution of her case. Helm, who turned 19 on Jan. 20, is charged with arson and concealment of a homicidal death. She has a pretrial hearing July 28. Investigators said Helm encouraged Schroeder to kill

her mother, who she said did not approve of the teens’ romantic relationship, then Helm helped Schroeder cover up the shooting by trying to clean the scene before setting the Schroeders’ house on fire. Costello declined to say whether he would seek to have Schroeder transferred to the jail. Wilkinson said he told her he planned to file a motion to transfer soon. Wilkinson did not approve of the plea agreement. “They have all the evidence to lock her up for a very long time. I had no say in it at all. He [Costello] took the easy route and accepted the plea bargain,” she posted on Facebook after the hearing. “Then he told me her max [sentence] instead of 40 [years] is now 20. I questioned 20 was even enough,” she wrote. “At the time, I did not know it’s a year for a year, so that’s only 10 years. Four so far spent in juvie. So if, and only if, the judge rules the max of 20, she will only serve six years in prison for murdering my sister. Broken system.”

Riverdale School Resource Officer Deputy Jim Miller recently was selected for the Regional Superintendent’s Award. Miller received the award for his dedication to students, educators, bus drivers and others in Rock Island County. Notably, he was recognized for his efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that schools throughout the county acquired the necessary personal protective equipment for school personnel and students, as well as lending assistance with a grant to provide funds for PPE supplies. He married Lynn Smalley on August 18, 1996 in Cordova, Illinois. After his schooling, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served in combat during the Vietnam War, and then continued his military career as a prison warden at Camp Lejeune Military Base in Jacksonville, North Carolina. After returning home from the military, Jim worked for Prudential in Moline as an insurance agent and financial advisor for about 10 years. He then went to work as a radiation tech for Exelon Nuclear Power Plant, where he retired in 2005. Jim was a member of the Doric Masonic Lodge 319 in Moline, the Cordova American Legion Post #1033, the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Disabled Veterans of America. He enjoyed fishing and travel to many parts of the country. He was proud to have organized the Cordova Sesquicentennial parade. Jim was a proud Papa who loved following his grandkids and cheering them on during their sporting events. Jim is survived by his wife Lynn of Cordova, IL; daughter, Erin (Jon) Ketelsen of Port Byron, IL(daughter of Janet Duncan Fidlar); son, Mahlon “Mac” (Sarah) Lewis of

Owens Hospice Home, Peoria, Illinois. She was born February 5, 1929 in Sterling, Illinois to Herman A. and Laura B. (Schumacher) Stralow. She married Larry L. Hazlett June 24, 1951 in Morrison, Illinois. He preceded her in death January 25, 2000. Surviving is a son, Eric L. (and Mary) Hazlett of Galesburg; a daughter, Juanita L. Knussman of Pekin, Illinois; brother-in-law, Jerry Vilardi of Port St. Lucie, Florida; five grandsons, David (and Cassidy), Matthew (and Kelsey), Jonathan (and Haley), and Lucas and Andrew; two stepgranddaughters, Nikki (and J.D.) and Lindsay and a great-granddaughter, Vivianne. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Michael; and a sister, Donna Vilardi. Arlene graduated from Morrison High School in 1946. She received her nursing degree from Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She was a registered nurse and private duty nurse for many years. She also took pride in being a homemaker.

She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg and former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ft. Pierce, Florida. She sang in the choir in both churches. She was a member of the Moline Public Nurses Alumni, Fifth District Nurses Association, Rock Island Junior Women’s Club, Rio Women’s Club and Knox County Home Extension Association. She was also a former member of the Galesburg Artist Guild and a member of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Ladies Aide/ LWML. She was a Reading Buddy with Nielson School in Galesburg. She was truly a special lady who will be missed by all that knew her. The funeral was Friday, June 11, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Burial was at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Born: November 28, 1929; Prophetstown Died: June 10, 2021; Prophetstown PROPHETSTOWN, Illinois - Craig V. Johnson, 91, of Prophetstown, IL, died Thursday, June 10, 2021 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2021 at the Prophetstown United Methodist Church, with Rev. Joey Garcea officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. The Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown is assisting the family with arrangements.

A memorial has been established. Craig was born November 28, 1929 in Prophetstown, IL to Valfred and Irma (Morrill) Johnson. He graduated from Prophetstown High School. On October 16, 1954 he married Geraldine “Gerry” M. McDonald in Oak Park, IL. She died on April 15, 2012. Craig owned and operated the Johnson Roller Mill in Lyndon for 16 years. He was also a rural mail carrier for 15 years. At various times during his working career, Craig provided carpentry and ag construction services, and he also operated a retail gun shop. He was a longtime member of the Congregational Church of Prophetstown. Craig was an avid antique firearm collector, was a founder of the Sauk Trail Gun Collectors and The Prairie State Longrifle Show and a member of the Kentucky Rifle Association. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Bears, and playing golf in his free time. Craig and his wife also enjoyed antiquing. He loved the game of bridge, playing with friends some of whom were from high school - well into his 80s. eingles@shawmedia.com Strong pitching was a major factor in regional championships last week for both Oregon and Riverdale. And when the two teams met June 10 at Oregon Park West for the sectional softball crown, that pitching was on display again. Though Oregon’s Mia Trampel was cruising much of the way in the circle, it was the Rams’ Ashlyn Hemm outdoing her, striking out 16 and throwing her fourth no-hitter of the season in a 3-0 Riverdale win. The sectional meeting was all about Hemm, retiring the side in order in five of the seven innings. “I think all my spins were working, but what was best was my defense behind me,” Hemm said. “They really helped on that bunt defense.” Oregon hitters attempted to bunt their way aboard three times in the game. All three went for routine outs. The Hawks also had a popup and a grounder. The other 16 outs in the game were recorded via Hemm strikeouts, with no ball off an Oregon bat leaving the infield all evening.

While Hemm was cruising, so was Trampel, though she had much more help from her defense, inducing seven pop-ups or liners in her five innings in the circle. Both teams had runners on in the first. Riverdale’s Lexi Duke reached on an error in the top of the inning, but a pair of pop-outs ended that threat and left her stranded at first. In the bottom of the inning, Bella Koertner drew a one-out walk, then stole second and went to third on a passed ball. But Hemm struck out the next two Hawks to end the inning and leave Koertner stranded at third. From there, both pitchers solidified their control. The Rams went down in order in the second and third, with only one ball leaving the infield, that a routine fly ball for Ava Hackman in center. Hemm was in even greater control, striking out the side in the second and third and retiring the Hawks in order in the fourth and fifth, striking out four of the six batters she saw in those two innings. Oregon (24-8) got its second baserunner of the game in the sixth,

Rams to a two-out infield single in the seventh, ending the inning on a fielders choice moments later. Riverdale was slated to play Joliet (Catholic Academy) at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 14, at Rosemont Stadium in Rosemont, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. eingles@shawmedia.com The Erie-Prophetstown and Morrison boys track teams will both be busy next week at the Class 1A state championships in Charleston. The host Panthers won four events at Friday’s sectional meet, with the Mustangs winning three and putting in three other state-qualifying performances. Sherrard wound up edging Riverdale for the team sectional title with 87 points; the Rams had 83. Erie-Prophetstown was third with 63. Morrison finished fourth with 58. Fulton took eighth as a team with 21 points, Newman was ninth with 19, Bureau Valley was 11th with 16, West Carroll tied for 12th with 14, Amboy-LaMoille was 14th with 11, and Milledgeville-Eastland took 15th with four points. Morrison had a 1-2 finish in the 400, with Alex Anderson taking first in 51.65 seconds and teammate Justice Brainerd right behind him. “I was hoping to be first in the [first] 200 and hopefully just don’t see anyone,” Anderson said. “Since I was on the outside lane of Justice, I was just hoping I didn’t see him the whole race. That usually means I get first.” Brainerd was never far behind him, finishing in 51.70. “All we do is just try to push ourselves each and every race we do,” Brainerd said. “Try to push each other in practices. We just try to force the best out of each other.” Anderson is also headed to state in the 100, where he took third in a state-qualifying time of 11.30 seconds. “It felt great,” Anderson said. “I was hoping to get first, but that didn’t happen, but I still qualified, so that’s awesome.” The Mustangs capped off the night with a dominant 4x400 relay. Brainerd, running the first leg, built a sizable early lead and his colleagues Brady Wolf, Skylar Drolema and Anderson never let up, finishing in 3:30.16 to beat second-place Sherrard by nearly four seconds. Morrison also has the sectional high jump champion in Drolema, who, rested and ready following a trip to Key West, cleared 6 feet, 1 inch. He tried 6-3, going up too close to the bar and knocking it off with his first and third attempts, and nicking it with his finger on the second. “High jump, I wasn’t expecting to do that because I was on vacation, but I got one practice in before this and it went good,” Drolema said. Wolf took second in the 300 hurdles in 43.40 seconds. Erie-Prophetstown has a pole vault champion in Parker Holdorf, who cleared 3.90 meters. Teammate Lucas Dreisbach cleared 3.1 meters to take third, but missed out on a spot at state. The Panthers also have a long jump champion in Braxton Froeliger, who went 6.18 meters. “I was making sure I was on my board,” Froeliger said. “Coach was helping me. My first jump was a little behind, so he had me move up. I just really built up my speed on that last jump, which was my best jump, and I was able to edge out second place.” Froeliger then teamed up with Michael Carlson, Cameron Stout and Alex Gustaf to win the 4x100 in dominating fashion, finishing in 44.72. Riverdale took second in 45.17.

“It was great. We got all our handoffs pretty good,” Gustaf said. “We came out with a season PR, and now we’re going to state. “Just run your own race. We all ran our own race. We all stayed relaxed, stayed smooth, and we got the job done.” Fulton was disqualified from the 4x100 on a false start, but rebounded with a strong 4x200. Erie-Prophetstown had gotten off to a good start and seemed to be repeating its wide victory from the 4x100, but Fulton’s Josh Vanderploeg was able to close much of the gap with the anchor leg. He, Carson Wherry, Daken Pessman and Kyler Pessman took second in 1:34.22. “It felt good,” Vanderploeg said. “We kind of got off to a slow start. I wasn’t really worried because I knew we’d come back because our third and fourth legs are really good.” Erie-Prophetstown’s 4x200 relay of Froeliger, Stout, Gustaf and Ben Lantz won in 1:33.83. The Panthers nearly had a third relay through to state, but Carlson, Stout, Lantz and Gustaf took third in the 4x400, finishing 0.65 seconds behind Sherrard. Vanderploeg also is through to state with a second-place run in the 200.

Both the Newman Comets and Morrison Mustangs ended the final stretch of the regular season not playing how they would have liked, but both looked to come away victorious in the Class 1A regional semifinal June 4. Newman, which had lost five of six coming into the game, put an end to Morrison’s season with a 6-1 win behind strong pitching and a big second inning at the plate. Comets pitchers Elias Henkel and Kyle Wolfe combined to strike out nine and allow only three hits. Henkel, a lefty, went four innings and allowed one hit and one unearned run. Wolfe relieved him for the final three frames and struck out seven to deny the Mustangs any chance for a late rally. Wolfe struck out the side in the fifth and seventh innings. He drove home Danny Mouw, who had walked and advanced a base on an error. The Mustangs finished the regular season winless in 14 games, but opened the postseason June 2 with an 8-3 regional quarterfinal win over Hiawatha in Kirkland. “I’m very proud of our team,” Morrison coach Josh Robbins said. “Over the course of the regular season, we were 0-14. We came back and won the first game of the playoffs, and we battled here. We battled hard and these guys really showed what they’re made of. “Newman was the better team today, and I congratulate them on their game and wish them good luck. We’re going to try to rebuild and come back next year and be strong.”

Jordan Gallentine breaks school record in 400 at state finals CHARLESTON – Morrison’s Jordan Gallentine had a race to remember in the 400 meters at the Class 1A state track and field finals June 10. Gallentine turned in a time of 59.12 seconds. It was good for fourth place, and broke the school record of 59.38 set by Jenny Schaefer in 1995. “Running against these fast girls definitely helped me, especially at the end, to have girls in front of me to chase down,” Gallentine said. “That helped a lot.” Gallentine also competed in the 100 and 200 dashes. Her time of 12.75 seconds in the 100 put her in 10th place, one spot out of a medal. Gallentine was the first Filly to qualify in three sprints at state since Schaefer in 1995. Fulton placed eighth in the 4x200 relay after winning its heat. The foursome of Abbigail Thyne, Grace Dykstra, Mikayla Gazo and Lara Bielema was clocked in 1:50.44 in the finals. bweidman@shawmedia.com Newman baseball coach Kenny Koerner had the same message for his team before it took their hacks: “Don’t sit on one. Let’s go.” The Comets tacked on a pair of late insurance runs in the Class 1A regional championship game June 7 against Fulton, and they were needed. Newman held on for a 3-2 victory, its second consecutive regional title. It was the Comets’ second one-run victory against the Steamers this season, the first being an 11-10 decision on April 30. “Hats off to Fulton. I thought their defense was outstanding today,” Koerner said. “I thought we hit a bunch of balls that during the regular season were falling in for us. We preach all year throw strikes and make plays and you’ll be in every game.” The Comets scratched out a run in the bottom of the second inning. Brennan Cook and Grant Koerner had twoout singles, and Kory Mullen walked to load the bases. Kyle Wolfe then hit a slow roller to Fulton shortstop Jacob Jones and beat the throw as Cook scored. Newman added two runs in the fifth with some help from the Steamers.

Mason singled with one out, and Davis Ludin came to the plate. Ludin had struck out looking and swinging in his first two plate appearances, but that was about to change. The lefty turned on a Wolfe fastball and deposited it over the fence in right field for a two-run homer, his first homer of the season. Wolfe regrouped, however, and retired Price and Ryan Eads on fly balls to end the game. Barnett (3-3) also went the distance for Fulton. In six innings, he allowed three runs (one earned), seven hits, two walks and hit one batter. Barnett had three strikeouts. “I told them at the beginning of the game we were going to have to fight for a solid seven innings,” Fulton coach Brent Dykstra said. “There was no doubt going into that seventh inning we were not going to be done fighting.”
