Prophetstown Township will have an open house at the new township building at 113 High St. on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The public is invited to come and view the new building located at Riverside Cemetery, and learn what services the township provides.
Fundraiser held for Tampico roof project

The Mendota football team opened its tenure in the Three Rivers Conference with a victory over Erie-Prophetstown. Uzi Angulo ran for 68 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Angulo scored on a 1-yard run with 8:30 left in the second quarter before the Panthers tied it before the half. Mendota retook the lead when Damien Magallanes intercepted a pass and returned it 85 yards for a score with 11:29 left in the third. Emilio Perez extended Mendota’s lead to 17-7 with a 24-yard field goal with 2:19 left in the third. E-P pulled within three points early in the fourth before Angulo scored on a 1-yard run to give Mendota the cushion it needed.

A Prophetstown husband and wife team have been making appearances at the city’s Fourth Friday festivities with a selection of beautifully crafted wood items for sale. Katie and Kyle Turner started K & K Custom Woodworking out of their home in Jan. 2020 and have been building an inventory of their handcrafted creations. They used their initials for the business namesake while adding “custom,” since they wanted to focus on their customers’ ideas of specially made wood items. Katie, the oldest of seven siblings, learned the craft from her grandfather as a child. She said the time was right to start it up again, with her and Kyle each combining their skills and creative ideas to make their line of products. “I was along for the ride after that,” said Kyle, noting that “it was something that we could do together.” When they purchased their home in Prophetstown in 2019, they were especially drawn to the 1,200 square foot detached garage, which used to be the old bait shop in town. The space was one where they could focus on their craft, while keeping the dust and noise from the house. Though day jobs keep them busy, they’ve made woodworking a hobby and a way to be involved in the community. Their first custom request was a dining room table, with the couple calling it a project where they jumped all in. It measured 4’ x 5’ x 42” tall and was made from solid red oak. Since
then, they’ve built a set of walnut end tables and a set of red oak utility carts to fit a customer’s kitchen layout. They’re currently in the process of finishing up a custom-built table with an attached back for extra shelving and storage. Besides the furniture, they’ve had requests for smaller items and have built up and inventory for events like Fourth Friday. They have cutting boards, essential oil holders, trivets for holding hot dishes, ruler holders for quilters, baptismal/keepsake boxes, and earring holders and displays, all branded with a “Made in Prophetstown” stamp. The couple mainly uses hard woods such as red and white oak, walnut, cherry, and hard maple. “These types of hardwoods allow us to build a quality product that we hope will last a lifetime, and maybe even passed down through generations in the family,” said Kyle. Besides local events, the couple’s work is on display at Hometown Hardware in Prophetstown. A bird arbor with shelving was commissioned for owner Keith Crady, and there’s a small display of a few of their handmade items. “We don’t really have any particular specialties, and that’s why we went with “custom” in our business name – so we could try and meet anyone’s needs that deals with wood and furniture,” said Katie, who is the organizer, planner, and all-around “behind the scenes” of K & K Custom Woodworking. putting things together, and he’s been learning as he goes while designing their products through a 3-D rendering program called SketchUp. This allows them to give the customer a 3-D rendering of what their finished item will look like, and to make any changes. The couple met while both living in northeast Montana. She grew up in southeast Minnesota with her grandparents and attended Luther College for Kinesiology, and Capella University for her MBA in Logistics & Supply Chain. Kyle grew up in Butler, KY and attended the University of Kentucky, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness management. He currently works for Shore Acter Farms and the Brooks Family. Erie schools determined to “change the narrative” BY SARAH FORD for Shaw Media
With Erie students now back in the classroom, Superintendent Chuck Milem said school staff are determined to “change the narrative” at school by getting them excited about their learning and growth by focusing on things they can control. During the Board of Education meeting on Monday, Aug. 23, Milem said he understands the anxiety due to COVID-19 constantly in the news and at home, and he wants the students and staff to focus on their education, friends, and school experiences. He also recognized a petition with hundreds of signatures from
people in the district, saying he “appreciates the support of the community and letting us know where they stand on the issues.” Before the Return to Learn plan was voted on, the board took public comments from three parents, each expressing concerns about continued masking, vaccinations and possible mandates, new bills for sex education standards in Illinois, and the loss of “parental authority.” Jason Smith stated that “if we don’t stand up now for our kids, we’ll lose what this country stands for.” Before taking a vote on the Return to Learn plan, Milem added that 51 out 859 school districts in Illinois have been put on probationary status for 60 days for defying mask man-
dates, and seven schools have lost accreditation, making them ineligible for IHSA athletics. “It’s scary stuff, especially for seniors - no sports, no graduation, and the school will lose funding,” he said. Milem added that the Return to Learn plan is a “working document that continues to evolve depending on legislation.” The modified plan included parental consent for testing, modified quarantine procedures, and health department reporting. “It’s happening everywhere, where every school district in Illinois is trying to deal with this,” he said of the efforts to navigate the mandates. Milem said he was one of 136 superintendents of a coalition signing on letters to state officials.
He added that the majority don’t agree with the mandates, but they don’t want to jeopardize athletics and student academic standings again. The board passed the updated plan. In other news, a lightning strike during a recent storm affected an air conditioning system at the middle sc hool, wi th numerous repairs throughout the week. High school and middle school fall athletics are back, with a great turnout for Meet the Panthers on Friday, Aug. 20. Homecoming Week is planned for Sept. 27 - Oct. 1, the district is in need of bus drivers, and a tentative budget was approved, which will be on view at the district office for 30 days before the board votes on Sept. 27.

Two killed in SUV, motorcycle collision

MORRISON – Two people were killed Aug. 25 when a westbound SUV and an eastbound motorcycle collided head-on on Route 30 near the intersection of Route 30 and Round Grove Road in rural western Whiteside County. Denny Fulfs, 74, of Sterling, who was driving the motorcycle, and Bria Williams, 27, of Robbins, who was a passenger in the 2000 GMC Yukon, died at the scene, Sheriff John Booker said. According to witnesses, Fulfs drifted into the westbound lane and collided head-on with the Yukon,
Arrests On Sunday, Aug. 22, about 4:15 p.m., Morrison police responded to a domestic dispute at 517 E. Wall St., Morrison. As a result of the investigation, Morrison police arrested and charged Jacob S. Callihan, 21, of Morrison, with domestic battery. Callihan was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

A private family graveside service and interment will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, IL, with Mr. Ken Renkes officiating. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials have been established to Windsor Manor and Unity Hospice. Ruth was born March 15, 1926 to Ross and Alice (McClure) Bealer in Sterling, IL. She was raised in Morrison, along with two sisters and two brothers. Ruth graduated from Morrison

Paul Eugene Petersen was born December 11, 1963, to the late Warren Petersen and former wife, Ida Marie Burkamper. Paul was raised and educated in Prophetstown, IL; always enjoying sports to play and watch. He played basketball and football while in high school.

Williams was thrown and pinned under the vehicle, Booker said. Thompson and several other passengers were taken to a local hospital, treated and released, Booker said. Fulfs was a longtime farmer who lived in rural Sterling, just north of Emerson on Science Ridge Road. Robbins is a village southwest of Chicago in Cook County. The crash remains under investigation, Booker said.

High School in 1944 and went on to college at the University of Colorado from 1944 - 1948. She majored in education. While attending the University, she met her future husband, Stanley R. Mitick, also a graduate of the University of Colorado. Ruth had a long career in the teaching profession spanning some 38 years, the last 23 years as a teacher at Challand Junior High in Sterling, IL. Starting as a girl’s physical education teacher in the Denver School System, she later taught remedial reading and finally taught as a prescriptive teacher, helping those students who had trouble with specific subjects and other problems that hindered their education. Her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling was beneficial in her successes as a prescriptive teacher. At some time during her career, she volunteered her services to tutor jail inmates with low level reading capabilities. Retiring in 1988 she had time to pursue the development of what some people called a “park” in her backyard, and also doing volunteer work for many
community projects. Ruth was a lifelong avid golfer, starting at the age of 13. She won many local tournaments, as well as being the Women’s Champion at the Morrison Country Club numerous times. She also was a winning member, numerous times, of the Women’s Lincoln Highway Regional Golf Team. In 2010 Ruth finally put away her clubs and hung up her spikes. Ruth was very civic minded and was always interested in preserving the heritage of her community. She enthusiastically helped to save some of Morrison’s last historic buildings. In 1980 Stan and Ruth moved into their new home that came with a 2 & 1/2 acre wooded ravine. For the next 40 years it was their passion to maintain this ravine with wild flowers, flower gardens and trails. Stan, being the engineer and relying on his upbringing in Colorado, designed, built and maintained “switchback” trails throughout the ravine. This design not only prevented erosion, but brought back memories of mountain trails in
Colorado. Stan also designed and built two wooden bridges to connect each side of the ravine. Ruth planted and maintained various flower plots. Her greatest pleasure was working in the woods. This included not only weeding and cutting back trees, but also ensuring the pristine atmosphere in the ravine that she and Stan had achieved. The woods were open for the public to enjoy. Each trail was named and the ravine became known as “Ruth’s Woods.” Ruth’s favorite quote was, “I have been blessed beyond measure.” Those surviving Ruth are one sister, Ila DeLuca of Upland, CA; and nieces and nephews Sharon (Tim) Allen of Scottsdale, AZ, Thomas (Mary) Pons of Erie, IL, Michael (Jenny) Heun of Erie, IL, Robert Bealer of Chadler, AZ, and Dorian (Donna) McClenahan of Upland, CA. After high school, he played basketball and then played fast pitch softball in Nationals for three years, including Sacrament, CA, Minot, ND and Garland, TX. He married Sally Fischbach. Paul was a member of the Prophetstown Motorcycle Club and a lifetime member of the Prophetstown United Methodist Church. A highlight of his sports career was playing slow pitch softball in the middle of winter, snow, sleet ice, and freezing rain with all proceeds going to March of Dimes. Golf was another sport he enjoyed. Paul’s trucking career started in 1983 for Walnut Grove, then went on to include Pepsi Stewart Beverage, TPC, Federal Express Freight, Wiersema and Schneider/Walmart Trucking. Quick wit and teasing sarcasm were also
traits he was noted for, as well as a very caring personality. Seldom did he forget a birthday or any other important date. Above all, was the love of family, especially daughter, Hannah Mariah and son, Skyler Paul and grandkids, Mariah and Kaiden. He really loved keeping track of his nieces and nephews. Remembering him with deep love and affection are his mother, Ida Marie Burkamper; son, Skyler Paul Petersen and his two children, Mariah and Kaiden; Paul’s daughter, Hannah Mariah Petersen; Paul’s sister, Beth Petersen (Tim Noel); brother, Corey (Lorrie) Petersen, their two sons, Dillon and Brayden; his brother Rick (Laura) Burkamper and son, Alex (Amanda) and daughter, Kaitlyn Burkamper; numerous cousins and good friends;
and also, three stepsisters, Juli, Susan, and Pat; and stepbrother Gary. It was a hot and humid weekend for the 67th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts World Series of Drag Racing, but the racers brought the thrills for an iconic event back on track at the Cordova International Raceway after last year’s event was postponed due to COVID-19. The Aug. 27- 29 racing extravaganza featured time trials and sportsman elimination races in the morning and afternoon, and as night settled in, the crowds packed the stands for the Pro Shows. The sounds of racecar engines filled the valley, and young and old alike watched in amazement as the most exotic racing machines on the planet took their turns on the track. With race cars, campers, buses, trailers, bikes, golf carts, vendors, and spectators at every corner of the grounds, the raceway located two miles north of Cordova was filled with
thousands of people for the “granddaddy of them all” in racing. Friday and Saturday night Pro Shows consisted of Nostalgia Funny Cars, Pro Stocks, and Gassers, Jet Dragsters, Fuel Altereds, Pro Mods, Nitro Funny Cars, and Top Fuel Dragsters, with some reaching speeds in excess of 250 mph. Inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday were Bill Lindle, Rick Jones, Larry Griffith, and Pat Richardson, each getting a plaque to commemorate their achievements, plus a lifetime pass to the raceway. The Grand Marsal was Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick, and Sammy Eubanks performed the Star- Spangled Banner. Sunday’s events included bracket classes, featuring many locals battling it out. Cash prizes for the weekend races ranged from $50 to $3,200, with higher payouts for the Quick Series Shootout, High Roller Races, and Sunday Bracket Classes. The Whiteside County Health Department mobile unit will be in Prophetstown and Erie on Thursday, Sept. 2 for pop-up vaccine clinics. Rotary Fishing Derby on Sept. 11
River Cities Rotary will host their annual free Kids’ Fishing Derby in memory of George Nitz and Al Vroman on Saturday, Sept. 11. Registration opens at 8 a.m., with fishing from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. The derby will be at the George Nitz family farm and the privately and abundantly stocked farm pond at 5509 286th St. N. Hillsdale. 1961: New sewage disposal plant approved in Fulton 60 Years

Mayor Warren Wiersema received a telegram from Congressman John Anderson stating that he had been informed by the U.S. Public Health Service that the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has formally approved Fulton’s application for a federal grant of $93,300 for a new sewage disposal plant. Estimated cost of the project is $332,000. Winners at the grand opening of Fulton Recreation Lanes include Walter Lewis, Laureen Brown, Allen Dornbush, Mrs. Alvin Temple, Anno Huizenga and Cindy Snyder.

A decision at the Fulton City Council meeting was not to change the traffic patterns on Fourth and Fifth streets. The vote was 4 for and 2 against a motion to have an ordinance prepared that would change Fourth and Fifth streets from one-way to two-way and permit parallel parking on both sides of the street.

In order for the River Bend School District to finance its purchase of two 1-year old school buses, the budget for fiscal 1991-92 will show a deficit of about
$29,000. The purchase of the buses will require about $75,000 of school funds. The purchase price of the buses will be paid by the end of the fiscal year. The city of Fulton was the winner of the Governor’s Home Town Award. A sign has been placed near the intersection of Routes 136 and 84 by the Shell gas station at the east end of Fulton. Fulton won the award in economic development mainly because of the Friends of the Windmill organization and all the volunteers. After a lot of planning, the latest improvements have been completed at the Steamers’ football field. The River Bend Athletic Boosters decided to make the commitment to improve and upgrade the press box because of the
continued need for more room.

The newly reorganized Harbor Crest Auxiliary met to elect officers and discuss fundraisers. The new officers are Joyce Daehler, President; Sandy Wiersema, Treasurer; Dawn Turner, Assistant Treasurer; Deborah Jensen, Recording Secretary; and Marie Johnson, Corresponding Secretary. Mayor Larry Russell expressed his concern that Fulton citizens need to be aware that the planned $2.5 million to $3 million water improvement project potentially will increase water and sewer rates by 8% to 10%. The water improvement plan includes razing the water treatment building that is at the well No. 4 location and construction of a new water treatment building that will house a state-of-the-art filter that will remove iron, manganese and any radium that might be present. The plan also includes drilling a new well, well No. 5, to replace well No. 2.

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency are discussed By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Magnesium deficiency is a condition of significance that is underestimated because of the difficulty in measuring it in direct fashion, unlike most medical conditions. Magnesium deficiency can contribute to heart rhythm disturbances, along with dizziness, falling, panic attacks, fainting and blood pressure control. Even major conditions in pregnancy, such as eclampsia, are impacted by magnesium. Magnesium is a mineral that is found in the soil. Unfortunately, because of changes in soil, environment and processing of food, there has been a growing trend of magnesium deficiency. This is magnified by the processing of foods. In addition, the high consumption of sugar-related junk foods aggravates magnesium deficiencies. The blood test that your doctor normally employs to test magnesium is not accurate for the actual magnesium stored in the body. The majority of magnesium is found either in bones or soft tissue. Only about 1% is
found in the blood, which is tightly regulated. Therefore, it is often symptoms that may drive either testing or treatment. Early signs of magnesium deficiency include leg cramps and muscle twitching, along with constipation, weakness, insomnia and tingling. Additional manifestations include behavior changes, heart rhythm disturbances, hypertension and heart disease. Long-term symptoms of magnesium deficiency include muscle skeletal pain such as chronic back pain, neck pain and tension headaches. Also, TMJ and migraine headaches are common. Even adult onset diabetes may have a strong connection with magnesium deficiency, along with chronic fatigue and thyroid disorders. Even menstrual cramp breast tenderness may be impacted from magnesium deficiency. Poor digestion and food cravings often are reflections of magnesium imbalance. In particular, carbohydrate cravings and chocolate cravings may be part of the picture. Ringing in the ears and swelling of the feet also can be seen with magnesium
deficiency. Stroke, heart attack and sudden death are some of the more extreme manifestations of magnesium deficiency. Alcohol intake may increase the need for extra magnesium. Many mental health conditions can be induced by magnesium deficiency. This may include anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks and personality changes. Even aggressive and belligerent behavior may be contributed to this deficiency. Depression and disorientation may be part of the picture, and in some situations even hallucinations. The aging process may be accelerated by deficient magnesium due to poor absorption. Officials have recommended 300 milligrams to 400 milligrams of magnesium supplementation daily in order to prevent disease. Some feel that this number may be low and will only make the blood test appear normal. Some feel it will take a better part of a year to replenish the deficiencies found in bones and soft tissue. Some calcium supplements may aggravate the problem. Vitamin K2
can help prevent that problem; 800 milligrams is recommended by some. Those with kidney function problems may have issues with magnesium and may need approval from a specialist. Some natural foods rich in magnesium include almonds, bananas, oatmeal, peanut butter, pumpkins, raisins, spinach and whole grain bread. Organic foods may have a higher magnesium content. Vitamin D3 is important to have on board with magnesium replacement as the two work together. Some people with kidney conditions will need to be cautious about magnesium replacement. Excess magnesium may cause diarrhea and other intestinal symptoms, and in a strange way, some of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency. There are several types of magnesium for replacement including glycinate, citrate, maleate, threonate, taurate, oxide and orotate. Work with your medical provider to optimize your level and type. Citrate causes the most diarrhea. Diarrhea may indicate the opportunity to change the type or spread out the dosage.

Erie High School National Honor Society working to help others By BARB PROEGER EHS NHS adviser
The Erie High School National Honor Society held a blood driv e in June with Impact Life, formerly the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in Moline and Davenport. There were 34 pints of blood collected. It is important to note that each pint of blood helps three individuals and quite often helps save lives. By planning, soliciting donors and hosting the blood drive, NHS was able to participate in the LifeSavings program in which it earned money to “pay it forward” to a nonprofit organization of its choice. On Aug. 20, the four officers, Cadance Hawk, Kelsey Stichter, Emily Decker and Paige Dykstra met Becke Medema, an Erie Food Pantry board member, to present her with $284 in earned funds. Funds received by the food pantry help pay for expenses of having its own facility. More

Impact Life provides blood to more than 80 hospitals in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. All of the local hospitals in the Quad Cities, Clinton, Morrison, Sterling, OSF, Iowa City and other facilities receive the much-needed blood. There has been a shortage of blood, so the center is asking everyone to donate whenever you can. The NHS is hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the high school gym. There are a few openings left for whole blood donors, along with double red cell donors. If you can donate, please make an appointment with Barbara Proeger, the coordinator, at 815-213-1059. There will be no walk-ins at the blood drive. The Erie High School student council will host a blood drive on Wednesday, Nov. 3, and the NHS will host a blood drive on Wednesday, Dec. 29. A Minnesota father and daughter have achieved the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to row the length of the Mississippi River by a team. The team made a stop in Port Byron on April 29 during their journey. KJ and Casey Millhone of Wayzata, Minnesota, officially have been named world record holders alongside teammates Bobby Johnson and Rod Price, who are both from Florida. The team completed the estimated 2,350-mile journey down the river in 17 days, 19 hours and 46 minutes, paddling constantly from April 22 to May
10 to reach Mile Mark Zero in the Gulf of Mexico. The attempt means KJ, 62, is the oldest person to hold the record, while his daughter Casey, 20, is the youngest female to do so. To obtain the record, the team paddled day and night in shifts, battling exhaustion, extreme weather conditions and dangerous sections of the Mississippi. Erie Village Board considers change to traffic flow BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media
The Erie board discussed but took no action on changing traffic flow in the triangle at their meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 10. During public comments, Erie resident Gary Farral asked the board to consider a one-way by the railroad tracks on Albany St. and 9th Ave. due
to a blind spot when turning onto the road, plus reducing the speed limit in the triangle. The board discussed options such as installing signage or making 9th Ave. a one-way from Albany to Main Streets but tabled any action until the next meeting on Sept. 14. Residents and business owners are encouraged to contact the board with their thoughts about the possible changes
before the next meeting. Chief of Police Rollie Elder reported a successful National Night Out turnout, both with activity sponsors and community participation. He will be budgeting for the event next year. He also announced a shred e ve n t , s p o n s o r e d b y W h i t e s i de County Triad, at the municipal lot on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
In other action, the board accepted a $3,000 bid from S.A.W. Tree Removal of Erie to remove two large trees at the Albany St. and 16th Ave. intersection. An electronic waste pick-up was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25 at the sewer plant for Erie residents only, with IDs to be checked. Sales tax for April was reported at $10,434.17, and recycling for June was 25,560 pounds.

Homecoming is near, and Ann’s Helping Hands and River Valley District Library have teamed up to make it a special experience for students in the Riverdale School District. Ann McCarrell of the local nonprofit and library staff have brought dozens of beautiful dresses, shoes, and accessories to the library for a dress swap and giveaway. Teens can come and pick out a free dress, or trade in last year’s for a brand-new vibe. Organizers hope students will find a dress they love while saving some money in the process. They can make it an experience by browsing the library’s upstairs dress floor, with selections from A-line to bodycon, tulle to sequins, and all the colors of the rainbow. Over the weekend, library staff made the “shopping experience” one to remember. On both Friday and Saturday, they offered fancy finger food and glitzy drinks, try-on rooms, fulllength mirrors, and a photo booth. The dresses will be available during the library’s open hours, but more dress-up fun is planned for Thursday, Sept. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3
from 4 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Erie-Prophetstown took fifth place with 115 points at the Rocket Run at Centennial Park in Rock Falls to open the cross country season. Erie-Prophetstown’s Jacob Gibson took seventh in 17:54, having to make an unexpected adjustment right from the start. “I lost a shoe. One of my buddies actually stepped on it, but that’s OK,” he said. “I took the other shoe off and gave it to my coach around the halfmile mark and just kept going through. By the time we got to the woods, I was just passing left and right and felt good. Overall, I just kept pushing through the race.” He ended up running most of the race in just socks. “It definitely was a traction thing
going up the hills and the finish, but overall it didn’t feel that bad,” he said. “It was a little rocky in some areas, but you have adrenaline going.” The Panthers’ Charlie Link was 24th and Aiden Jepson finished 25th. Morrison did not field a full team. The Mustangs had a 15th-place finish from Brady Wolf in 18:32. In the girls race, Erie-Prophetstown took third with 82 points. Dylan Chandler, part of a lead pack early in the race, was the top Panthers finisher in ninth place in 22:20. Jillian Norman was 13th, Brooke Lalley was 20th, and Jade Nickerson was 21st for Erie-Prophetstown. Morrison did not field a full team. Marissa Folkers finished 32nd in 26:47 for Morrison.
